With the changing nature of work, new regional ecosystems flourishing, and massive domestic migration the demands to our infrastructure are changing and evolving. One of the most fundamental parts of this equation is the question of how we move people and goods from point A to point B. We have seen a surge in new technologies such as mass electrification and driverless vehicles and new modalities like delivery drones and even tunnels. Austin is becoming an epicenter for transportation tech both in terms of innovation and deployment. Today we talk with Meg Merritt and Joseph Kopser about where this industry has been, where its going, and how it fits into the broader growth of the region. “This isn’t about being against Trump or for Trump; this is about saying ‘folks, this political theatre we’re in is dysfunctional. It helps no one.’” Joseph Kopser is all about being part of the solution. A U.S. Army veteran, successful entrepreneur and one-time candidate for Congress, Kopser is now heading up an Austin, Texas-based non-profit dedicated to creating a safe space where Americans don’t have to worry about being demonized because of their party affiliation. USTomorrow is working to increase civic engagement, build coalitions and reduce hyper-partisanship at a time when political divisions are driving dangerous wedges throughout all aspects of our society., not to mention the pending impeachment of President Trump. The challenge is to find the sweet spot where issues rather than partisanship take center stage. As you’ll see in my conversation with Kopser, he and his team are up to the challenge.www.ourvoicesmatter.comwww.lorellemedia.comSupport the show (http://patreon.com/OurVoicesMatterPodcast)

In Friday's episode of Just This, Rick and I discuss several high-profile runoff election races this week that most impact San Antonio, including those for U.S. Congressional Districts 21 and 23; the contest to replace longtime Texas House Speaker Joe Straus of San Antonio (in Texas House District 121); and the very low voter turnout in them all. In the congressional races, we examine whether gender representation gains being touted nationally will manifest locally next fall in the District 23 race. Iraq veteran and former defense intelligence officer Gina Ortiz Jones trounced her Democratic rival, former teacher Rick Treviño, to earn the right to challenge incumbent U.S. Rep. Will Hurd (R-Helotes). We also look at an interesting race shaping up in Congressional District 21 to replace U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith (R-San Antonio), who has long represented the San Antonio-to-Austin district but saw his support eroding before announcing his retirement. In that race, tech entrepreneur and military veteran Joseph Kopser, a Democrat, will face off with conservative Republican Chip Roy, a protégé and former senior staffer of several top Texas Republicans including U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz and John Cornyn, and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
The biggest surprise of the Texas primary was Mary Wilson's win in the 21st. Now heading for a runoff on May 22nd against Joseph Kopser, Wilson, a baptist pastor, tells her story and shares her vision for a more caring and just America.
