Doing things that don't scale. OMX Analytics Being comfortable with being uncomfortable. Ricardo's Bio Ricardo grew up in a small town called Freer in South Texas, practically raised himself, barely graduated high school in 2004, and ultimately joined the Army in 2006. He served as an infantryman in a brand- new unit on Fort Lewis here in Washington, the Brigade 2nd Infantry Division, and was one of the first privates in the brigade. The unit deployed in 2009 as the first Stryker brigade to Afghanistan, and upon return, the unit deactivated. Ricardo voluntarily withdrew from a medical discharge and ETS'd in October 2010. Using his GI Bill benefits, Ricardo graduated from Texas A&M University Kingsville in 2016 with his degrees in chemical engineering and chemistry and moved back here to Washington State not long after graduating. From there, things in his life took a twist, and now, he's a recent graduate of The University of Washington's Master of Science in Entrepreneurship program offered by Foster Business School. Ricardo's Social Media Ricardo's Twitter: @therealchemja Ricardo's FB: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002919020741 Ricardo's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rperez36/ Ricardo's Advice One more thing with the entrepreneurship part that you were asking about, I say it's really important to be fearless. Number one, you have to get uncomfortable. That was one thing that army taught me. The army makes you uncomfortable in many different ways and you grow as a result of it. You grow as a person, you grow as a soldier. You grow as a leader, get uncomfortable. It's going to help you grow and get to school. Whether you can afford to pay for classes and actually get a degree. If you can't, there are a billion YouTube videos from Ivy League schools about business and everything you could ever want to learn. I highly recommend when Coronavirus is all over, go to your actual local universities and go to their business departments and just start talking to people.

Ep #167 - Jason Morgan is my guest for this episode of Empowering Chats.  This will be my only show for the month of December. As I close out the year of 2021, I strongly encourage you to listen to the words of this very special man and his story or courage, hope and inspiration. Jason is a Military Veteran and Author of the book, A Dog Called Hope. In June of 1999, Jason Morgan was deployed to South America on a counter narcotics mission. His life was changed forever in the remote area of Ecuador when during an altercation with drug traffickers, his driver lost control of their SUV causing it to launch off the road into a steep ravine. Jason was ejected from the car and suffered a crushed spine. He was left for dead, drowning with his face submerged in swampy water, but then a miracle occurred. An American missionary working on radio towers in the area came upon the scene and saved Jason's life. Two months later Jason awoke from a coma with no immediate recollection of what had happened. He was told by doctors it was a miracle he had survived. However, as a result of his extensive injuries he was also told he would never walk again. Jason is a paraplegic, and the non-profit organization Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) was a life-saver for him. With their help he was paired with a service dog to assist him in living an independent life. His first canine companion service dog, Napal, is the one featured in his book, A Dog Called Hope. Napal changed his life and gave him hope. And because of this life-changing experienc and the special bond he had with Napal, Jason's life was forever changed. Jason has since developed a special creed to offer hope to others who have been tragically injured: “I've tried to live my life by offering hope and renewed strength to those who have suffered a tragic injury or disability. Life may not be better or worse, but it will be different and I want to show them by example that you can live a productive life. And a life of purpose no matter what condition you're in. You need to focus on your ability, not your disability.” Jason lost his father, Mike Morgan on Thanksgiving Day and is asking my listeners to consider a donation to Canine Companions in his name. “It's great to get together with like-minded individuals to discuss the things that bring us together and certainly, the vetrepreneur community that we're part of is something that's growing and thriving...we wanted to create a fund that addressed the veteran network because we know how veterans have this incredible ability to execute and get things done. They've served their country, they continue to serve when they take off that uniform, and want to continue to make that same difference. That's really the catalyst behind Veteran Ventures Capital. We've developed it, we've grown it, we've had some challenges, but just like a typical veteran, we've adapted and overcome.” - Derren Burrell   “We all know and believe that veterans make great entrepreneurs for a variety of reasons: leadership, teamwork skills, mission-focused, effectiveness, perseverance and grit...all those things contribute to making the founding principles of good business leaders. And yet, even though we have those data points and even though we see that veterans are overrepresented in the CEO S&P 500...you still have this funding gap. It's 30% more difficult to get venture capital backing as a veteran. That's crazy...how do you fix that and how do you make sure the money is betting on the best horse? That's really our founding rationale and when I heard about what Derren is doing, I said I've got to get involved with this.” - Joshua Weed (USAFA ‘01)   Derren Burrell is Founder, President & Managing Partner of Veteran Ventures Capital and a Retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel. After a 21-year military career that included five deployments, Derren started Veteran Ventures Capital, a company that funds military veteran entrepreneurs. Joshua Weed (USAFA ‘01) is a Senior Director at Veterans Venture Capital and also a former Air Force financial management officer. Derren and Josh met while serving in the U.S. Air Force and “financing the fight” in 2005. They've been working together at Veteran Ventures Capital since Josh joined the team in 2020. In this episode, we discuss: Why Derren started Veteran Ventures Capital How Josh transitioned into venture capital What military veteran company profiles attract venture capital funding How Veteran Ventures Capital facilitates access to both network and capital Why military veteran business partnerships are often very successful We also discuss why military veterans excel as entrepreneurs and what types of military veteran-owned businesses attract investors. Derren and Josh also share how Veteran Ventures Capital multiplies investment power while reducing risk at the same time. The guys also share why they invest in post-revenue stage businesses and how they advise pre-revenue companies. Have you ever wondered how lucid dreaming can help you in your waking life? Today's episode on Gateways is about lucid dreaming and how we can learn from it with Charlie Morley, a bestselling author and teacher of lucid dreaming, shadow integration and Mindfulness of Dream & Sleep. He has been lucid dreaming for over 20 years and was “authorized to teach” within the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism by Lama Yeshe Rinpoche in 2008. In 2018 he was awarded a Winston Churchill Fellowship grant to research PTSD treatment in Military Veterans and continues to teach people with trauma affected sleep a set of practices called Mindfulness of Dream & Sleep. I first learned about lucid dreaming from the Mindvalley community, as Charlie is a teacher on the Mindvalley platform. We talk about the following and so much more! ✅ What it means to lucid dream ✅ How sleeping works and the stages of sleep ✅ What it means to dream and what happens when we go to bed at night ✅ How we learn and understand what our dreams really mean ✅ Why we have nightmares and what they mean? ✅ Why our dreams are so intense and feel real when we experience them, and yet are so easily forgotten? ✅ What it means to create a dream plan Please tag us and tell us what you loved! Telehealth is quickly becoming the next frontier for patients and their doctors to collaborate. By using smartphones or tablets, more patients can now have access to quality care without leaving their home or backyard - who needs an office visit when you can just chat or call?Having served as Command Master Chief of Naval Hospital and Navy Medical Forces Atlantic in the past, Michael Hinklehas been around hospitals and clinics and has seen how telehealth is being used more and more. As physicians and other clinicians turn to emerging technology solutions to provide more services and keep patients safe, telehealth is helping to expand access to healthcare while reducing costs at the same time.Today on the Expert(ish) Podcast, Jay shares a fun conversation with Mike for the second time. They will talk about a variety of things, from hiring talents, Mike's Bronco addiction, SkillMil's telehealth services, to whiskey. As Mike enters the telehealth industry, he will also showcase all of the great things telehealth can do for transitioning military members, their families, as well as businesses.Michael Hinkle is the President of SkillMil. You know, less than 20 bucks your whole family can have telehealth, not each person but the whole family. And a lot of times, people just need somebody to talk to. They don't need to go sit in front of a psychiatrist and psychologist and give them $300 an hour, right? They need someone to say, it's going to be okay today. And telehealth can do that." - Michael Hinkle  "Your network is the most important thing you can have. There are people out there to help you do anything you want to accomplish in life. You can just reach out and someone will help you." - Michael Hinkle  "My biggest mistake when starting a business, a lot of people do and they know better but they do it anyway, is you spend all your money on a great product and then you don't have any money left for marketing." - Michael Hinkle  "Titles don't mean anything. It's all about skill sets. Anytime you sit down and you hire someone, you shouldn't be hiring them into a position. You should figure out what they're good at. If you're going to hire them, put them where they can succeed. You can't  judge a fish by its ability to climb a ladder." - Michael Hinkle  "When we started thinking about this and we went and did our research, the one fact that sticks out in my mind is that 70% of doctor visits can be handled by telehealth." - Michael Hinkle  Engage with Michael Hinkle LinkedInSkillMil WebsiteDiapers and Deployments | SkillMil Podcast   Connect with Expert(ish) Podcast Host JAY JOHNSON Call (858) 925- 4536 WebsiteLinkedInFacebookInstagram

Our guest on the podcast this week is Treacy Dobbins, Founder & CEO of Inspire Real Change. Treacy is a published Author and Military Veteran with over 21 years of leadership and team-building experience. He attended Liberty University where he gained a Dual Masters as a Graduate in Human Services Counseling including more than 7 years of real-world application in Sociology and Community Services Programs. Treacy launched Inspire Real Change in 2020 with a Vision/Mission of Transforming Homeless Social Services to Better Serve People and Communities. In today's episode, Treacy shares his own life's journey that led him towards the valuable work he is doing today. He speaks with passion about the systemic problems that surround homelessness, the prejudices and stereotypical thinking that creates issues for those unfortunate enough to find themselves homeless, and he talks about the opportunities we have to inspire real change in this area. Listen in as we discuss why the systemic approach matters to transforming the homeless social services to better serve people and communities. Treacy shares his wealth of experience from working in Los Angeles and more recently in his local community in South Carolina highlighting the hardline data and the human ‘voice' of the issues as he asks us all to reframe how we relate to homeless from “This person doesn't want any help” to “Maybe my community doesn't have the necessary resources to help this person”. This was a fascinating conversation for me to explore this issue at a deeper level, break through some of my own biases, and truly appreciate the work that Treacy is leading in our world. If you are interested in inspiring real change in your local community or society at large, I think you'll enjoy Treacy's insights. Key Takeaways The real issues facing homeless people How homelessness needs to be viewed as a systemic issue The potential for change that exists despite the challenges Treacy's final words of wisdom and advice for what we can do to help bring change where it is needed. Memorable Quote “ I believe in people. Everybody deserves a second chance, everybody in their heart and soul, we all go through challenges, it's the breakthrough that makes us stronger.” - Treacy Dobbins Episode Resources: http://inspirerealchange.org/ (InspireRealChange.org) SPONSOR: http://coachesbusinessschool.com/ (CoachesBusinessSchool.com) http://sacredchangemakers.com/ (SacredChangemakers.com) https://sacredchangemakers.com/community (Our Community) Thank you to our sponsor: A HUGE thank you to our sponsor Coaches Business School who are helping coaches to succeed in business, so they can make a meaningful difference in our world.
