Today we are celebrating the release of our 200th episode of the podcast! To mark this special occasion, we have invited some of our past guests back to record an episode focused on the important topic of ‘school attendance'. Suzy Rowland, Sarah-Jane Critchley and Fintan O'Regan join me, not only will you hear our familiar voices, but you'll also see us live as we have video recorded the episode for the first time! The controversial DfE campaign “Attendance Matters” received criticism and trivialised some of the complex reasons why children may not attend school. It failed to adequately address the challenges faced by students with SEND or those with mental health issues. Did you know that 92% of those non-attending are neurodivergent and 83.4% are autistic? The assumption that the best place for ALL children to be is in school – but is it when their needs aren't being met? In this episode we explore various aspects of non-attendance including; zero tolerance, bullying, systems and policies, self-determination theory and much more. “These are really serious, complicated, complex issues that, in a way, lumping it all together as ‘school non-attendance' doesn't even begin to explain some of the nuances of what's happening in individual families.” Suzy Rowland Thank you for your continued support of the podcast! I'd be really interested in hearing what you thought of the video – so if you end up watching it please let me know what you think!   About Sarah-Jane Critchley Sarah-Jane Critchley is passionate about helping autistic people, their families, friends and supporters live happier lives of their own choosing. She is the internationally recognised author of ‘A Different Joy: The Parents' Guide to Living Better with Autism, Dyslexia, ADHD and More...'. and contributor to two titles on autism and girls. She wrote an ‘Introduction to Autism' for AC Education to support adoptive and foster parents. She is an international keynote speaker. For over 10 years (2008-1018), Sarah-Jane managed the Autism Education Trust working to improve educational provision for young people with autism. She was instrumental in the development, monitoring and management of the award-winning training programme that reached over 207,000 education-based staff in the UK and adapting the AET's highly successful training programme to meet the local context in Italy and Greece. She worked with stakeholders to produce guidance on exam accommodations and exclusions. Sarah-Jane holds a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) specialising in the management of change from London's City University. She is a mother to two autistic teenagers (a late-diagnosed girl and a boy) and an autistic husband and lives with two cats.   About Fintan O'Regan MA, PGCE BSc He was the Headteacher of the Centre Academy from 1996 -2002, which was the first specialist school in the UK for students between the ages of 7-19 specialising in issues related to ADHD, ASD and ODD. There are five kinds of time in a reading class.Allocated time. There is the amount of time allocated for instruction. Off-task time (OTT). There is OTT when students are doing things unrelated to the lesson or learning objective. TOT. There is also time on task (TOT), where students are actively engaged in learning activities. AET. There is Academic Engagement Time (AET). This is the time when students are cognitively and behaviorally on-task or engaged in learning activities that are within their zone of proximal development. Flow state time. Here the student is completely absorbed, focused on a single task or activity. They are directing all their attention toward something that they are motivated to do or be engaged with. Academic engagement time is good, but flow state time is the best for learning. Magic teachers, if they are empowered to make the choices that are best for their students know how to align reading instruction with students' interests to create flow state time. But this does not occur in a structured literacy class.A teacher's #1 job is to help children fall in love with books. After that, much of reading instruction takes care of itself.

Directed by: Hiromi Kamata Written by: Mariko Tamaki Aired: December 22, 2023 Summary In 2015, May is kidnapped at the airport in Tindouf, Algeria by her former employer, Applied Experimental Technologies, who gives her the choice of spying on Monarch or being prosecuted. Cate accosts Tim when he arrives at the airport and asks him to help locate May. Tim, Cate, and Kentaro find May's family in Tacoma, Washington, and learn about her past from her sister, Lyra. They trigger a false Titan alert to rescue May from AET, but she chooses not to spy on Monarch and stay behind. Verdugo is convinced by Cate to secure May's release in exchange for help understanding Shaw's plans, and by Tim to take Monarch public as an explanation for the alert. After reaching an agreement with Monarch, AET rebrands to Apex Cybernetics. Shaw and Duvall take over the Alaskan Monarch outpost and detonate a rift to the Hollow Earth to seal it. In 2012, May – then known as Corah Mateo – was recruited by AET. The team tracks the senator to Boston, where Dixon helps Oscar Finlay arrest the senator's aide to coerce information out of him. The aide reveals to Reacher and O'Donnell that Little Wing is a missile program designed to enable terrorist attacks, and is being held at their facilities in Denver and New York. Later that night, the team is ambushed by a biker gang, but manages to kill them. Training and Resting and the Mountain Athlete Scene: Sam Naney of Cascade Endurance

About 50 years past the start of the Anthropocene (~1950), mountain towns were abuzz with people running on trails, rock climbing, backcountry skiing, and mountain biking. Rumor has it that even back then, there were complaints of crowded trailheads and spraying. And the athletes huffing and puffing up and down and across those hills likely hadn't conjured where they landed in the multi-faceted definition of the mountain athlete. Was the term "mountain athlete" even a thing? Nowadays, post publication of "Training for the New Alpinism," (2014) and "Training for the Uphill Athlete," (2019), we often find either ourselves or folks we know accessing professional coaching or simply reading up on how to become stronger, faster, and tougher in our mountain pursuits. Sam Naney and his wife Alison began Methow Valley based Cascade Endurance several years ago. Their business caters to mountain athletes seeking training plans, wellness tips, and general methods to keep the body and mind primed for a 12-month-long cycle of up and down and up again. The two were part of the first iteration of the mountain athlete coaching enterprise Uphill Athlete, and were offered a front-row seat to how mountain sport training culture has evolved. From weekend warriors to elite level mountain climbers, it's now possible to find myriad personalized plans. Hard to believe, a bit more than a decade ago, mountain athletes had to pilfer from well-founded running and cycling training principles. Terms like fast-twitch, slow-twitch, AeT and LT, and taper are part of the mountain craft vernacular.  With the proliferation of plans and videos, and yes, podcasts, we jump into the fray to offer a few things in this episode. We learn more about Sam's backstory. And we take a 10,000-foot view with him to discern some basics regarding training best practices as we approach the touring season. Think of it as a toe-dip rather than full-body cold water immersion. And we'll learn how he once was a lab rat of sorts experimenting with roller skiing and hyperoxic training...something not to try at home. You can find us at the-high-route.com. Yeah, there are two hyphens for redundancy, which is a good policy in the mountains. For weight weenies, hyphens weigh next to nothing. The theme music for The High Route Podcast comes from Storms in the Hill Country and the album The Self Transforming (Thank you, Jens Langsjoen). You can find a link to the album here—there are so many good songs on this album. And if you think you've spotted a UFO in the past or visited the 7th dimension, "Beautiful Alien" is a good tune to start with.
