Hey everybody, welcome to the RV Podcast News Edition for Monday, January 19, 2026. I'm Mike Wendland.This is where we cut through the noise and bring you what's really happening right now in the RV lifestyle and the RV industry. Five stories this week, and taken together they paint a clear picture.The RV world is not just changing. It is restructuring.Let's get started.STORY 1. TAMPA SUPERSHOW AND THE MEGA-DEALERS GET EVEN BIGGERThe Florida RV SuperShow wrapped up this weekend in Tampa, and once again it was the Super Bowl of RVing. Huge crowds, massive inventory, and a lot of signals about where the industry thinks things are headed.One number really stood out.Lazydays RV, now operating as Lazydays RV powered by Campers Inn, announced it brought more than 450 RVs to the show. Four hundred and fifty units on the grounds. There were over 1,300 new models here. That means Lazydays, if it really bought that many uits - I didnt count them - accounted for a third of the total new units on display.That is more than confidence. That is making a statement and claiming market power.It highlights how the biggest RV chains keep getting bigger. Camping World, General RV, Blue Compass, and Campers Inn have all been aggressively buying up smaller dealerships across the country.In many markets, those big names now sit next to each other, or even across the street from one another.That kind of saturation creates brutal competition and raises a serious question. How many stores can a market really support?What we kept hearing in Tampa is that 2026 may be the year underperforming locations start quietly closing.We already saw a preview late in 2025 when Camping World abruptly shut down its store in Escanaba, Michigan.For shoppers, this environment cuts both ways. There is more inventory and more choice, but dealers are under pressure to move aging stock. That pressure can work in your favor, if you negotiate wisely.STORY 2. INFLUENCER FATIGUE. THE MARKETING MODEL IS BREAKING DOWNAnother major theme at the Tampa show had nothing to do with floorplans.Influencer fatigue.By our count, there are now at least 500 so-called RV influencers. Probably more. Anyone with a cellphone camera can claim the title, and many have.For years, manufacturers poured money, free gear, and perks into this system.But saturation has changed everything.Behind the scenes, RV manufacturers and marketing teams are saying the influencer model no longer delivers like it once did. They report being flooded with demands for free RVs, guaranteed commissions, and paid travel just to show up.There are clear signs of a pullback.Winnebago has ended relationships with some influencers. Keystone RV has done the same.The issue is trust. When every product is “the best ever,” audiences stop believing any of it.I overheard it firsthand in Tampa. Outside the influencer building, one man said, “I'd be an influencer too if they gave me free stuff. But since that hasn't happened, I don't trust what any of them say. Free stuff and money can buy anything.”That comment captures the problem perfectly.STORY 3. TARIFFS ARE HAMMERING MANUFACTURERS, AND ROADTREK MAY BE THE HARDEST HITAnother major topic of quiet but intense conversation at the SuperShow was tariffs and the damage they are doing to certain RV manufacturers.Start with Europe.The Italian manufacturer Wingamm has been trying to bring compact Class B style motorhomes into the U.S. market for at least the last four years. At one point, the tariff hit on a Wingamm imported from Italy was estimated at roughly $70,000.That nearly killed the effort.The tariff has since been restructured into a fixed import fee announced in mid-2025, about $9,500 on the Oasi 540.1 and roughly $11,100 on other models. Even so, Wingamm has now turned to crowdfunding to help finance its U.S. market entry.Canada is being hit even harder.Many popular Class B vans sold in the U.S. are built in Canada. Tariffs stack up at every step.A prime example is Leisure Travel Vans.Their Unity models use Mercedes Sprinter chassis and major components built in Germany, shipped to Canada, assembled there, and then exported to the United States. Tariffs apply to the chassis, the imported parts, and the finished vehicle.Industry sources say tariffs alone are adding at least $20,000 to the price of a Leisure Travel Vans motorhome. The new Mercedes Benz model that introduced at the show last week was sticker shock on steroids. It's show price was $272,000. For a B + van. Over a quarter of a million dollars! Yikes. And then there's Class B campervan maker Roadtrek, made in Ontario.Roadtrek's situation may be the most severe.The company has struggled since 2019, following a massive financial scandal involving its previous owners that ended in bankruptcy. Roadtrek is currently owned by a French RV company that took control as part of that restructuring.Since then, Roadtrek has faced repeated Mercedes Sprinter chassis shortages, production disruptions, a weak market, and the loss of key personnel.Most recently, Roadtrek lost its longtime National Sales Manager, Mike Williams, widely known across the industry and to customers as “Canada Mike.” He has now joined Sunshine State RVs in Gainesville, Florida, where some are already calling him “Florida Mike.”That is a significant loss of leadership and visibility for the brand.At Tampa, the buzz was everywhere. Roadtrek is struggling badly, and many insiders believe the company may be for sale again. Nothing official, but the talk was constant and came from dealers, current employees,  and industry veterans.Tariffs are a huge reason for all of this pressure.STORY 4. MORE CONSOLIDATION, MIDWEST AUTOMOTIVE DESIGN LIKELY TO BE SOLDAnd speaking of major brands being in play, we're hearing strong indications of another significant acquisition.Multiple sources tell us that Midwest Automotive Design, a high-end builder of luxury Class B motorhomes on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter platform, is about to be sold.The buyer, according to what we're hearing, is Alliance RV.Alliance RV was founded in 2019 by industry veterans Ryan and Coley Brady and is best known for its Paradigm line of luxury fifth wheels. The company has built a reputation for high-quality construction and strong customer loyalty.Midwest Automotive Design is a powerhouse in the luxury van segment. It is known for models like the Passage and Luxe Cruiser and has also built private-label vans for Ultimate Toys, Chinook, Holiday Rambler, Fleetwood, and American Coach under the REV Group umbrella.This is not a small boutique operation.If confirmed, this move would signal Alliance's expansion beyond towables into the premium motorized market.It reinforces the larger pattern. The RV industry is entering a major consolidation phase, with strong operators positioning themselves to acquire respected niche brands as costs rise and margins tighten.STORY 5. ZION NATIONAL PARK WILL RESTRICT LARGE RVS ON A KEY ROUTENow an important heads-up for anyone planning a Southwest RV trip.Zion National Park has announced a major change taking effect June 7, 2026.Large vehicles will no longer be allowed to travel through the Zion–Mount Carmel Highway, including the famous tunnel.Vehicles longer than about thirty-five feet, wider than seven feet ten inches, taller than eleven feet four inches, or weighing more than fifty thousand pounds will be prohibited. The long-standing escort system for oversized vehicles is being eliminated.The Park Service says the road was never designed for modern RVs and that safety concerns drove the decision.You can still visit Zion, but many large motorhomes and fifth wheels will need alternate routes or off-site parking.This is a major planning issue for RVers heading west.BONUS STORY. HONDA OFFICIALLY ENTERS THE RV SPACE WITH A LIGHTWEIGHT TRAILERAnd here's one of those moments when we get to say, we told you so. This is a BONUS STORY THIS WEEK.Two episodes ago, we reported that Honda was quietly working on something big in the RV space. Now it's official.Honda has unveiled the Base Station Prototype, an all-new lightweight travel trailer designed by Honda engineers at the company's U.S. research and development centers in Los Angeles and Ohio.This is not a rebadged camper. Honda says the Base Station Prototype brings segment-first innovations that only Honda can deliver.The stated goal is to “democratize outdoor adventures.” In plain English, make RVing accessible to more people.Honda designed the Base Station to be towed by many of the most popular vehicles in America, including crossovers like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, as well as electric vehicles such as the Honda Prologue and Honda's upcoming 0-Series SUV.That is a major shift.Most lightweight trailers still require full-size trucks or large SUVs. Honda is aiming directly at the millions of households that already own smaller vehicles and have been priced out of RV ownership.Honda also says the Base Station will remain competitively priced in the lightweight travel trailer segment, signaling this is not just a concept vehicle but a serious market entry.If Honda follows through, this could reshape the entry-level RV market in a very big way.And as soon as we can see one in person, you know we'll bring you a full report.CLOSINGAlright. But not enough to prevent a first shakedown (and burnout, of course) from happening with the existing stock 12-valve VR6 before it gets replaced by a built motor from Techtonics Tuning. === Visit http://JasonSentMe.com to get a Hagerty Guaranteed Value (TM) collector-car insurance quote! === Derek and Jason begin today's episode with a recap of the swap progress so far - in a matter of weeks, Jason's 1996 Volkswagen Cabrio went from being gutless, to gutted, to glorious - receiving not just an engine swap, but also a full subframe and suspension swap from a VR6 Jetta as well. To top it off, Jason mounted period correct BBS RX multi-piece wheels that really tie everything in together. If Volkswagen had made a true Mk3 GTI Cabriolet, this is about as close as you could get! After discussing hours and dollars spent on the project, Derek circles back on other cars that sound better or worse than a VR6. The Ferrari 512BB comes to mind, even being a Bosch CIS-equipped car. Amongst other CIS cars, Jason also discusses the rich induction sounds of his other cars - including his Mercedes-Benz 2.3-16 Cosworth and Mk1 Volkswagen Cabriolet. And of course, it's not a Carmudgeon Show without critically blasting other lesser-sounding cars - in this case, the S14 in the E30 BMW M3 and all Nissan VQ engines. Was all the fuss worth it? Next week there'll be the giant National Retail Federation show. I suspect that, you know, 80 or 90% of the announcements there will be about new technology and AI and cloud being used to revolutionize and further stimulate innovation and growth in the retail sector.03:31 — So I think what we'll see here throughout 2026 — it's been a busy first week or so in here — we're going to see the entire global economy rocked by these changes, as AI is infused into every facet of what businesses are doing, and the AI providers and cloud providers begin to move laterally and, in some cases, aggressively into different markets here.04:30 — We've seen the pace of these massive, disruptive revolutions — upheavals in business cycles — go from, you know, centuries to decades to years. Siempre que hablamos de coches clásicos y deportivos míticos, nos centramos en su diseño escultural o su ficha técnica. Pero a veces olvidamos un pequeño detalle: había que conducirlos. Y muchos de estos iconos no eran precisamente dóciles. En el vídeo de hoy viajamos al lado más salvaje de nuestro garaje. Vamos a analizar 15 coches que son auténticas obras de arte, pero que escondían un carácter complicado, exigente y, en ocasiones, peligroso. Coches que no perdonaban errores, con repartos de peso críticos, turbos traicioneros o una ausencia total de ayudas electrónicas. Si conseguías domarlos, la recompensa era inolvidable; si no... el desastre estaba garantizado. Esta es la lista de las "bellas bestias" que analizamos hoy: -Porsche 550 Spyder (1953): El "Mata-gigantes". Increíblemente ligero (550 kg) y rápido, pero su agilidad extrema lo hacía impredecible en el límite. -Mercedes-Benz 300 SL "Gullwing" (1954): El original "hacedor de viudas". Su eje trasero de suspensión oscilante provocaba cambios de caída en las ruedas al levantar el gas, causando sobrevirajes fatales. -Alpine A110 (1962): La reina de los rallyes. Su configuración "todo atrás" lo hacía pivotar maravillosamente en horquillas, pero era traicionero en curvas rápidas y suelo mojado. -AC Cobra 427 (1965): Un chasis de roadster británico pensado para 100 CV lidiando con un V8 de más de 400 CV. El chasis se retorcía y la trasera siempre quería adelantarte. -De Tomaso Pantera (1971): Diseño italiano y corazón V8 Ford. Su reparto de pesos lo hacía muy propenso al sobreviraje brusco al desacelerar en curva. -Lancia Stratos (1973): Diseñado para ganar. Su batalla cortísima lo convertía en un coche ágil pero terroríficamente nervioso, capaz de girar 180 grados sin aviso. -Lamborghini Countach (1974): Su "mal carácter" no era tanto dinámico, sino físico. Visibilidad nula, embrague durísimo, calor infernal y ergonomía imposible. Solo para héroes. -Porsche 911 Turbo (930) (1975): La leyenda negra. Motor atrás, batalla corta y un "turbo lag" masivo. La potencia llegaba de golpe en mitad de la curva, creando la receta perfecta para el accidente. -BMW M1 (1978): El superdeportivo de BMW. Un desarrollo caótico dio lugar a un coche pesado y de manejo delicado que requería manos expertas. -Renault 5 Turbo (1980): El "Culo Gordo". Batalla corta y motor central turboalimentado. Dinamita pura en un paquete muy pequeño y nervioso. -Ferrari 288 GTO (1984): Una bestia de Grupo B para la calle. Su mayor enemigo era el retraso de sus turbos: pisabas y no pasaba nada, hasta que 400 CV golpeaban de golpe el eje trasero. -Lancia Delta S4 Stradale (1985): Un coche de carreras "domesticado" a regañadientes. Brusco, ruidoso y vibrante. -Dodge Viper RT/10 (1991): El renacimiento del espíritu Cobra. V10 de 8.0 litros sin ABS, sin control de tracción, sin airbags y ni siquiera ventanillas. El coche analógico más salvaje de los 90. -Jaguar XJ220 (1992): Enorme, sin dirección asistida, frenos insuficientes para su peso y un motor V6 biturbo con mucho lag. Difícil de exprimir. -TVR Griffith 500 (1993): La filosofía de Peter Wheeler: mucha potencia, poco peso y cero ayudas electrónicas. El límite entre el agarre y el desastre era finísimo. ¿Es el "mal carácter" un defecto o una muestra de personalidad? L'usine Mercedes-Benz, pilier de l'économie locale, exporte moins. Pour amortir le choc, le port de la ville accélère sa diversification. De notre envoyé spécial de retour d'East London, « Nous sommes au contrôle portuaire, c'est là qu'on dirige les bateaux dans le port », explique Sphiwe Mthembu, directeur du port, fier de son infrastructure, la seule du pays située à l'embouchure d'une rivière. Agrandi pour Mercedes-Benz au début des années 2000, le terminal s'est transformé au fil des investissements en plateforme polyvalente. « Cela signifie que nous pouvons traiter des conteneurs. Nous manipulons aussi du vrac sec : ce que vous voyez là, c'est une cargaison de manganèse qui vient d'une mine dans les terres. De l'autre côté, vous apercevez des voitures qui seront chargées sur ces porte-voitures qui font régulièrement escale ici. Un autre navire est en train d'importer du blé. Et un tanker doit arriver pour du vrac liquide. C'est tout l'avantage d'un terminal polyvalent : pouvoir gérer différents types de marchandises sans contrainte », ajoute-t-il. Le tourisme pour sortir de la dépendance automobile Des travaux sont en cours. Des ouvriers sont en train de travailler pour faire une sorte de marina avec des restaurants pour accueillir encore plus de touristes. Cela fait partie de la diversification du port d'East London qui, face aux difficultés que rencontre l'industrie automobile ici, cherche à consolider de nouveaux secteurs. « Toutes les embarcations de plaisance arrivent ici, décrit Spiwe Mtembu. Muchos modelos se han ganado el apodo de Widowmakers o "hacedores de viudas" con el paso del tiempo, pero hoy nos centramos en los "auténticos". Máquinas que no perdonaban errores y que exigían un respeto absoluto para no acabar en tragedia. Para entender este fenómeno, en el vídeo viajamos primero a la aeronáutica. El término nació con aviones como el bombardero B-26 Marauder o el F-104 Starfighter, y saltó al asfalto con la Kawasaki H1 Mach III, una moto con un motor explosivo y un chasis que se retorcía como un chicle. Pero los verdaderos protagonistas de esta historia son los coches. Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I’m Stephen’s sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Stephen Semple: They started small. Dave Young: They started small and then they got big. They got so big to the point that you could call them an empire. Stephen Semple: That’s it. That’s the idea. Dave Young: It’s a pretty simple premise. Stephen Semple: That’s it. Dave Young: So as we counted down, Steve told me the topic today and it’s Porsche. Stephen Semple: Yes, sir. Dave Young: Porsche. I’m assuming this is the car. Stephen Semple: The car, yes, the car. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: The car. Dave Young: And I’m trying to… I know some Porsche jokes, but I probably shouldn’t tell those on this show. I’m trying to think if I’ve ever actually been in a Porsche. Stephen Semple: Oh, well then you’ve got to come up and see me, Dave. Dave Young: You own one. I know you own one. Stephen Semple: Well, I have one. Bernier’s got two. I don’t know how many Steve has. Dave Young: I see how it is. I see how it is. Maybe I will tell my Porsche joke. So you guys that own them, do you call it Porscha? Because some of us just say Porsche. Stephen Semple: Well, if you actually take a look back, that’s the proper German pronunciation as Porsche. Dave Young: Porsche, okay. Stephen Semple: And it’s supposed to not be… It’s not Italian Porsche, right? So it’s Porsche. Dave Young: Porsche, Porsche. Okay, I’ll accept that. I’ll accept that. I’m guessing we’re- Stephen Semple: Well, look, you got to always call a dealership to double check. They’ll tell you. Dave Young: Now, if I had to guess where we’re headed to start this off sometime around the 40s, maybe earlier. Stephen Semple: A little earlier than that, actually. It was founded by Ferdinand Porsche in 1931 in Stuttgart, Germany. You’re not far off. But the interesting thing is where the growth really happened, even though that’s when it was founded, when things really started to happen, was actually post-World War II. Dave Young: That makes sense. Stephen Semple: You’re correct on that. Dave Young: So, it started in 31 and by the time you hit the late 30s and 40s, you’re part of the war machine. Stephen Semple: Yes. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: So it was founded in 1931, Stuttgart, Germany by Ferdinand. And when we take a look at the history of the business for a very long time, they were a part of the VW group, although they were recently spun off into their own separate business. And there’s a lot of shared history between VW and Porsche. A lot of people make fun of the fact that it’s basically a VW. There’s so much connection. Now here’s the other thing is, there’s a lot of connection in Nazi Germany here as well. And I mean- Dave Young: That’s what I was intimating but trying not to say, but yes, there was definitely. Stephen Semple: And not one of these ones of, “Oh, I’m a business and I got sucked up into the machine.” I mean, very early on. Very early on. Ferdinand was a member of the SS following the war, both he and his son were charged. Dave Young: No kidding. Stephen Semple: He served two years in jail. His son six months. So we’re not talking loose connections here. He was a buddy of Adolf. Let’s just put it out there. And if you remember, going back to episode 21, VW was founded by Nazi Germany. So episode 21 about The Beetle, and Ferdinand was the guy who designed the Beetle. Dave Young: Right, right. I remember you saying that, Ferdinand Porsche. Stephen Semple: And look, Porsche has not always had the success it has today. It’s become pretty big. They do 40 billion EU in sales. They have 40,000 employees. They make 300,000 cars. There was a time that they’re making cars in the hundreds and thousands. It wasn’t that long ago. But let’s go back to Germany to the early 1900s. And if we think about Germany at that time, pre-World War II, pre-World War I, there was lots of history of engineering and science in Germany. More Nobel Prizes in Science was awarded to Germany than anywhere else in the world at that time. Dave Young: Right. Stephen Semple: Germany was a real leader in science and engineering. And the first commercial automobile was made in Germany by Mercedes-Benz. So it’s 1906 and Daimler recruits Ferdinand because Ferdinand had been the winner of the Pottingham [inaudible 00:06:05] Prize, which is the automotive engineer of the year, which is given to new chief engineers and basically allows the person to have this designated doctor engineer honoris causa, Ferdinand Porsche. And he would go around calling himself all of that. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: And this is an honorary doctorate because he never actually finished college, but he had real engineering chops, Ferdinand. So he moves to Stuttgart, which at the time is a center of car making in Germany, including all the suppliers. And he works for Benz for 20 years. Okay. Now, it’s Germany in the 1930s and 2% of the population own a car in Germany as compared to the United States, which is 30%. Dave Young: In that time? Stephen Semple: In that time. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: Ferdinand comes up with this idea of we should make an inexpensive car. We shouldn’t be making car for the wealthy. We should make an inexpensive car. The board rejects the idea. Ferdinand leaves in 1929. And in 1931… Kicks around for a few years, and then 1931 starts a consulting firm. Now, this dude knew how to name things. You’re ready for the name of the company? Dave Young: Of the consulting firm? Stephen Semple: Of the consulting firm. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: I have to read this to get it right. The Doctor Engineer Honoris Causa Ferdinand Porsche Construction and Consulting and Design Services for Motor Vehicles. Dave Young: Now, if I know anything about German, that was all one word that you just said, right? Stephen Semple: Well- Dave Young: No spaces in between any of those words. Stephen Semple: Translated, you’ll see it as Dr. in H period, C period, F period, Porsche, capital G, small M, small B, capital H. Dave Young: It just rolls off the tongue, doesn’t it? Stephen Semple: Now, here’s the crazy thing. Up until 2009, that remained the official name of the company. You actually can find, if you see Porsche’s older than that, that if you look for that, it’ll be stamped somewhere in the car that that’s the manufacturer. Dave Young: They changed it finally because it was just too expensive to- Stephen Semple: It cost too much- Dave Young: Put that many letters in a dye cast. Stephen Semple: Exactly, exactly. Dave Young: Holy cow. Stephen Semple: So it’s 1934 and they land a contract with Germany to design a small affordable car for the people called the Volkswagen. Dave Young: Volkswagen. Stephen Semple: Beetle. Right, there you go. Now, here’s the thing that’s weird. Post World War II, the allies are in trying to rebuild Germany and no one owns VW. VW was owned by the state. So now it’s in the hands of the British and the British and the allies want to create a strong economy in West Germany because it’s now the Cold War. So the big defense to defending against East Germany and the expansion of communism is to really get the economy going in Germany. And so the British government, as we know from episode 21 about the Beetle, approached Porsche who designed it and said, “Help us get this car built.” And this is where it gets just a little bit weird because the son goes in one direction. Ferdinand’s doing his own thing. They both got arrested for war crimes. Son gets out first because he did six months. And his son’s name’s Ferry and his dad is in jail for two years. So between this time where dad’s still in jail and son’s out, here’s one of the things they did towards the end of the war. We don’t know exactly how many, but it was probably about 20 of their best engineers and they moved them out into the farmland of Austria and basically had them working in a barn because they didn’t want to get them arrested or killed, quite frankly. So Ferry gets out and he goes to this barn in Austria and he’s looking around and he goes, “What the heck are we going to do to make some money? Let’s start fixing up cars.” Now, not a huge business fixing up cars. It’s post-war and there weren’t a lot of cars in Germany anyway, but they had to do something. Then the dad gets out of jail and he ends up doing this work with Volkswagen. Now, here’s what’s interesting. And this is where the really tight ties between Porsche and Volkswagen start. The deal that the German government gives Ferdinand, the deal that the allies give Ferdinand is this. Dave Young: Stay tuned. We’re going to wrap up this story and tell you how to apply this lesson to your business right after this. [Using Stories to Sell Ad] Dave Young: Let’s pick up our story where we left off and trust me you haven’t missed a thing. Stephen Semple: The deal that the allies give Ferdinand is this. We want your help designing and distributing this car. We will give you a royalty for every VW Beetle sold worldwide. Dave Young: Wow, that’s pretty generous. Stephen Semple: Well, no one knew it was going to be such a huge success and basically go for 50 years that car was being built. Dave Young: Right, right. Stephen Semple: So for a long time, the biggest source of revenue for Porsche was royalties on VW Beetle sales. Dave Young: Wow, okay. So it really- Stephen Semple: Isn’t that crazy? Dave Young: It really wouldn’t exist if that deal hadn’t been made. Stephen Semple: May not have, may not have. Now, meanwhile, Ferry, who has design chops of his own and loves cars, started tinkering around with vehicles. And what he started to do was put big engines in small cars. There was all these Beetle parts lying around. He would build a car, this little car, and he’d put a big engine in it. And if you go back in the time, if you go back and take a look in the late 30s, early 40s, and you take a look at Ferraris and things like that, you take a look at the race cars at the time, they were two-thirds engines. They’re these massive engines. So he went the opposite direction. He said, “Well, let’s take a little car and put a big engine in it.” And he’s driving around and he goes, “This is fun.” Because he’s basing it on parts lying around, which is the VW stuff. It’s an engine in the back. This becomes the Porsche 356, which is basically Porsche’s first car. So they start making this car and they wanted to make it somewhat affordable. So the price was $3,750, which would be $42,000 today. And they also wanted to have it as being a daily driver because again, everybody else making performance cars were not daily drivers, had a trunk, bunch of things, daily driver. And this is an important part of Porsche’s DNA. We’re going to come back to this a little bit later, this idea of it being a daily driver. So coming out of World War II, sports cars, industry’s happening and everybody’s got one. MG and Jag in the UK, there’s Ferrari in Italy, you get the idea. Now, one thing I forgot to mention that’s interesting and still today, the government state of Lower Saxony, which is basically would be the state, they still own 20% of Volkswagen. Dave Young: Really? Okay. Stephen Semple: I forgot to mention that. Dave Young: Who are they now? Stephen Semple: Well, Volkswagen’s still around. Volkswagen’s still- Dave Young: No, who is the Saxony? Stephen Semple: Well, it’d be like saying the state of Texas. It’s a state. Dave Young: Okay, it’s just a part of Germany. Stephen Semple: Part of Germany and that government still owns 20% of the company. Dave Young: What a world. Stephen Semple: Now there’s all this stimulus going on in Germany to try to get the economy going. One of the things that they did, there was a really interesting tax rate. There was an interesting tax structure. There was a very high marginal tax rate. Now, ordinary people were taxed at 15%, but the marginal tax rate could go as high as 95%. And the reason why they wanted to do this was create this incentive for reinvestment. So there’s all this… As they’re making money, there’s this heavy reinvestment. And in the early 50s, racing is really exploding. Automobile racing is really exploding, but the lines between professional and amateur is blurry. If you remember, James Dean and Steve McQueen and other actors, Paul Newman, were all racing. Dave Young: Right. Stephen Semple: They’re all racing vehicles. And Jaguar and Porsche were trying to do the same thing in terms of creating this daily driver that you could race. Now in the end, Porsche won, and I think part of it is because quite frankly, they just built a better vehicle. There was a time where the joke with Jaguars was you had to own two because one would always be in the shop and one… And going back to the early DNA, Ferry Porsche was quoted as saying, “We have the only car that can go from an East African safari to race in the Le Mans to take out to theater and then drive on the streets in New York.” Dave Young: Wow, okay. Stephen Semple: And look, today, Porsche still heavily advertises that. They will advertise a Porsche driving through the snow with ski racks on it. And not their SUVs, the 911. This is very much part of it. And if you think about it, this parallels what Rolex did in the early days. You remember from episode 184 with Rolex. Rolex, the Submariner, the Explorer. Dave Young: Target by niche. Stephen Semple: Target by niche and make it tough and something that you could use and wear day to day. So it’s 1954 and Porsche’s selling 588 cars and about 40% of them is in the US. So really what’s making things hum with them is all those Beetle sales. And it’s the ’60s, the Ford Mustang comes out, the Jag E type comes out, the Austin-Healey comes out, and Porsche decides they need a new vehicle. And they were going to do a sedan, a four door sedan. But what they realized was they didn’t really want to compete with Mercedes and BMW. So they looked around at the other German car manufacturers and they said, “You know what? That’s probably not the place to go.” They had designed it up and that project failed. They had also been working on a six cylinder Boxter engine. So Boxter engine, the cylinders are opposed, so they’re like boxing. And the whole idea is that lowers the center of gravity of the weight of the engine. And they had a project that they were working on that that didn’t go ahead. So they stepped back and they went, “Maybe what we should do is just reduce the size of the sedan and put that engine in it.” That’s what they did. And that became the Porsche 901. Except there’s a problem. Peugeot had the copyright for zero in the middle of a bunch of numbers in France. They couldn’t call it the 901 because of that copyright. Dave Young: So they called it- Stephen Semple: So they called it the 911. And that’s now the iconic Porsche car. 1966, they sell 13,000 of these cars. Now, here’s the thing that I think is very interesting. And Porsche, as far as I could figure out, is the only car manufacturer that does this. First of all, they’ve maintained the 911 forever, but even on top of that, Porsche really understands design language. We can all recognize a Porsche. Dave Young: Right. Stephen Semple: We can recognize one from 2020. We can recognize one from 1999. We can recognize one from 1970. Even though they’ve upgraded the technology, they’ve changed the design of the car. They’ve now come out with the Cayman and the Macan and the Cayenne. They’re all recognizable as that vehicle. They’ve done a great job of doing that. I think that was a lost opportunity, frankly, when Tesla came out because they had a clean design slate. Tesla could have done that. But I think that’s really interesting how they’ve managed to maintain, even though they’ll modernize it. In our minds, we still will see one and go, “That’s a Porsche.” Dave Young: Sure. And the great car brands are able to do that. Stephen Semple: Yes. Dave Young: Audi is always going to be an Audi. Volvo is always going to look like a Volvo. And in the Portals class at Wizard Academy, one of the videos that I use to demonstrate that, there’s a language. If you combine specific shapes and specific lines, that all adds up to that brand of car. And so I’ve got an old video that I got when I was in the Motor Press Guild from Audi. It was just a video that was made for journalists with an Audi designer explaining all the lines on the car when they came out with the Q7 and how it still maintained the Audi design language. It was fascinating. Stephen Semple: It is. Dave Young: So Porsche could tell you that and the cool thing is those designers can tell you that. It’s hard for you and I to go, “Well, I can look at it and say, “That’s a Porsche.” But to be able to put it into words that describe it to someone else, is a gift. Stephen Semple: What’s really interesting, my nephew, Jeffrey, he loves Audi’s. That’s what he has. And he’ll even make the comment, he doesn’t like the Porsche’s because you feel like you’re in a bubble. Audis are very square. If you look at the back of an Audi and you look at the rear end of a Porsche, it has hips. But again, he’s even, “They’re great cars, but I like the squareness of the Audi.” So that’s interesting. Dave Young: Audi Audi has a fairly, not perpendicular, but an upright grill more so than a … And that’s part of their design language. Stephen Semple: So the whole DNA of Porsche came from this whole idea of a small car. Dave Young: Big engine. Stephen Semple: Big engine, daily driver, that was the whole idea is, it’s supposed to be a car that you can drive every day. That’s the core, core, core, core principle. That’s why they always have decent sized trunks. I remember when Gary bought his Boxter, one of the things he loved about it is you can actually put two sets of golf clubs in that car. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: Right? Now, here’s what’s fun. There was a time where when they were really wanting to get things going, they did some great print advertisements. So they had ads like bug killer. Another one was calling it transportation is like calling sex reproduction. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: Now, two of my favorites, one was not perfect. It would list 20 or 30 races that Porsche won. And if you actually read it, there was two that it didn’t. Dave Young: That they didn’t, “We didn’t win all the races.” Stephen Semple: So not perfect. Dave Young: That could have been driver error. Stephen Semple: That could have been. But Dave, you were going to make some jokes. Porsche’s able to laugh at itself. It actually had an ad that said, “Small penis? Have I got a car for you? If you’re going to overcompensate, then by all means, overcompensate.” Dave Young: I love it, I love it. Well, and that’s always the thing, the jokes are not about the car. Stephen Semple: But they actually ran that ad and I believe it ran in Car and Driver Magazine. I cannot imagine getting that ad approved. Dave Young: That’s amazing. Stephen Semple: And look, their own drivers are like, “Yeah, whatever.” Dave Young: Sure, compensating all I want. Absolutely. La de hoy es de esas historias que me encanta contar. Es sorpréndete, diría que incluso divertida y casi desconocida. La realidad, supera a la ficción. Todo comenzó cuando, tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial, la fábrica de BMW en Eisenach quedó del lado ruso. Estamos en 1945. Alemania está dividida. El azar ha querido que la fábrica original de automóviles de BMW, en Eisenach, caiga en la zona de ocupación soviética. Múnich, la sede central, está en el lado americano, pero devastada por los bombardeos y con la producción prohibida. La planta de Eisenach está dañada en un 60%, pero conserva lo crucial: maquinaria, planos y personal cualificado para fabricar los modelos de preguerra. El plan soviético inicial era desmantelar todo como reparación de guerra. Pero entonces, el Mariscal Gueorgui Zhúkov, héroe de la URSS, visita la planta. Le mostraron un BMW 321 de preguerra y quedó tan impresionado por su calidad que ordenó reanudar la producción de inmediato. Así nacieron los "BMW Rojos". En noviembre de 1945, sale el primer BMW 321 de posguerra. Le seguirán los míticos BMW 326 y motocicletas como la R35. Se estaban produciendo BMW "oficiales" en una fábrica controlada por los soviéticos (bajo el conglomerado Awtowelo), mientras la "auténtica" BMW en Múnich no tenía permiso para fabricar coches. Mientras tanto, en Múnich, BMW por fin obtiene permiso para reanudar la producción de motocicletas en 1948. Como era de esperar, no les hizo ninguna gracia que una entidad soviética vendiese coches con su marca. Comenzó una batalla legal que terminó en 1952. Los tribunales dieron la razón a la empresa bávara. La fábrica de Eisenach, ya transferida a la RDA (Alemania Oriental), se vio obligada a cambiar de nombre. Así nació EMW: Eisenacher Motorenwerk (Fábrica de Motores de Eisenach). El cambio fue sutil: se mantuvo la forma del logotipo, pero el azul de Baviera fue reemplazado por el rojo del socialismo. La pasión por la competición no se había extinguido. Antes de la guerra, el BMW 328 era una máquina ganadora. Los ingenieros de la RDA, primero como BMW y luego como EMW, revivieron su leyenda, creando los EMW 328 "Rennsport" y compitiendo en Fórmula 2. Pero la ambición llegó más lejos: la Fórmula 1. En 1953, el equipo EMW se presentó en el Gran Premio de Alemania, en Nürburgring. Edgar Barth logró clasificar el coche, pero tuvo que retirarse por problemas mecánicos. Fue la primera y última vez. En la producción de calle, EMW se centró en el EMW 340 (derivado del BMW 326) y el descapotable EMW 327. Sin embargo, estos coches eran complejos y caros. La RDA necesitaba un vehículo popular. En 1955, la producción de EMW cesó y la fábrica de Eisenach se reconvirtió para fabricar los Wartburg, con motores de dos tiempos. Esta historia de la Guerra Fría es un eco de lo que ocurre hoy. En 2022, tras la invasión de Ucrania, empresas occidentales (Mercedes-Benz, Renault) abandonaron Rusia, dejando sus fábricas. Al igual que en 1945, estas plantas quedaron bajo control ruso. La antigua planta de Renault en Moscú, por ejemplo, fue transferida al gobierno. ¿Qué hicieron? Revivir la marca soviética Moskvich. Pero el nuevo "Moskvich 3" no tiene nada de Renault; es un coche chino, un JAC JS4, al que se le cambian los logotipos. La mítica marca Volga también ha resucitado usando como base modelos del fabricante chino Changan. Ambas historias nacen de un conflicto geopolítico. Pero hay una diferencia clave. Los "BMW Rojos" de EMW fueron una continuación: usaron los planos y la ingeniería original de BMW. Los nuevos Moskvich son un reemplazo: coches chinos con emblema ruso. Depuis plusieurs mois, Donald Trump cible directement l'Afrique du Sud. Dans ses discours, le président américain accuse Pretoria de ne pas protéger les fermiers afrikaners blancs, qu'il prétend victimes d'un « génocide ». De notre envoyé spécial de retour de Johannesburg Les démentis sud-africains n'y changent rien. Washington sanctionne : boycott du G20 organisé à Johannesburg, exclusion de l'Afrique du Sud du prochain sommet États-Unis/Afrique et, surtout, décisions économiques lourdes, notamment des droits de douane de 30% sur les exportations sud-africaines. Pour East London, ville du Cap-Oriental dont l'économie dépend largement de l'usine Mercedes-Benz, la punition américaine est un séisme. Sur le port d'East London, la scène est pourtant immuable : rangées de berlines alignées sous les projecteurs, grues immobiles dans l'air salin, ouvriers qui s'affairent en attendant les navires. Dirk Botes, responsable clientèle, détaille l'organisation du terminal automobile : « Cette zone peut préstocker environ 1 400 voitures. Dans le hangar là-bas, un peu moins de 4 000, et sur l'esplanade ouverte environ 1 500. » Ce soir, un navire doit pourtant accoster avec plusieurs heures de retard, perturbé par le mauvais temps. « Il va charger ces véhicules, décharger ceux qui arrivent d'Europe, puis on recommencera avec le bateau suivant », explique-t-il. Ce ballet, autrefois parfaitement réglé, s'est ralenti au fil des mois. Le port exporte de moins en moins de voitures, essentiellement des Mercedes Classe C dont les ventes déclinent depuis plusieurs années. Sphiwe Mthembu, le directeur du port, ne masque pas son inquiétude : « La situation nous touche directement. Quand un constructeur présent depuis soixante-cinq ans commence soudain à souffrir d'une baisse de volumes, cela nous affecte immédiatement. Nous recevons des conteneurs destinés à l'usine : si l'usine tourne moins bien, le port en subit l'impact. Nous devons absolument garder Mercedes-Benz ici et attirer un deuxième grand constructeur. C'est vital pour l'économie locale. » En ville, la chambre de commerce suit de près la situation. Sa directrice, Lizelle Maurice, femme d'affaires respectée et ardente défenseure de l'économie locale, résume l'impact en quelques mots : « Le marché américain était notre plus gros marché, environ 30% de toutes les commandes. Quand les volumes ont commencé à baisser, les fournisseurs de Mercedes-Benz ont immédiatement réduit leurs effectifs. Et cela, c'était avant même les tarifs de Trump. La pandémie avait déjà mis notre économie à genoux. L'an dernier, l'usine est passée de trois à deux équipes, puis 700 départs volontaires ont été annoncés. Les décisions de Washington n'ont fait qu'aggraver une situation déjà très tendue. » Pour comprendre la centralité de Mercedes-Benz dans la région, Ted Keenan, journaliste du Daily Dispatch, déroule une liste : Auria Africa, Valeo International, AIH, et bien d'autres. Tous ont licencié ces derniers mois. «Certaines estimations parlent de 160 000 personnes potentiellement touchées dans la région si Mercedes s'en allait », glisse-t-il, avant de nuancer : « Je ne crois pas que ce soit réaliste. Ce serait la pire chose qui puisse arriver. Mais, il y a des rumeurs persistantes venues de Chine : Mercedes-Benz serait prêt à partager son usine. Aujourd'hui, beaucoup de constructeurs partagent leurs installations. Ce n'est pas impensable. » Pour les employés, c'est jour de fête. Plusieurs centaines d'entre eux sont rassemblés sur un terrain de rugby pour la traditionnelle célébration de fin d'année. Brochettes, musique, danses. Thabile Bevu, délégué du syndicat Numsa, explique pourtant que cette année a été rude : « La production s'est arrêtée plus tôt que d'habitude, quatre semaines en avance. C'est une combinaison de facteurs. Les taxes américaines ont forcé l'usine à réduire. En juillet, on a aussi été en chômage technique pendant six semaines. Beaucoup d'employés embauchés l'an dernier ont déjà perdu leur travail. Alors, tout le monde se demande : est-ce que je serai le prochain ? Mais Mercedes a toujours réussi à faire face, en travaillant avec nous. » Le lendemain, l'un des ouvriers, Phiwe Qaba, arborant un maillot bleu clair des Orlando Pirates, confirme que la crainte est constante : « On parle toujours du même sujet. Parce que dès que les États-Unis arrêtent de commander, notre vie quotidienne change. » Si lui bénéficie d'accords garantissant un revenu minimum même en cas de chômage technique, il pense aux autres, à ceux qui gravitent autour de l'usine : « La dame qui vend des fruits à l'entrée, le gars qui fait le ménage, celle qui prépare la nourriture… eux rentrent chez eux sans un sou. C'est une catastrophe. » À quelques kilomètres du centre-ville, dans le township historique de Duncan Village, on ressent déjà les secousses de la crise. Khulile Jacobs, éducateur et figure locale, fait visiter le lycée du quartier et raconte l'effet sur les familles : « Beaucoup avaient pris des prêts logement ou auto. Avec les licenciements, tout risque de s'effondrer. Des familles qui avaient quitté le township pour des quartiers plus aisés reviennent déjà. Le mouvement a commencé juste après l'élection américaine de novembre. Les entreprises savaient ce qui allait arriver. » Pour Khulile Jacobs, les raisons des décisions de Donald Trump dépassent largement les questions agricoles ou sécuritaires : « C'est une nouvelle forme de guerre froide. L'Afrique du Sud est un hub d'investissements sur le continent. On a l'impression que Trump essaie de détourner ces investissements vers les États-Unis. » Il ajoute un facteur géopolitique majeur : « Le fait que notre pays ait amené Israël devant la Cour internationale de justice a pesé lourd. Pour Trump, c'est comme si l'Afrique du Sud s'était opposée à un allié stratégique. » Et lorsqu'on lui demande s'il soutient son gouvernement dans cette démarche, la réponse est sans ambiguïté : « À 100 %, même plus. Nous nous tiendrons toujours aux côtés du peuple palestinien. Moralement, nous ne pouvons pas faire autrement. » Malgré tout, certains veulent croire à un possible apaisement. Lizelle Maurice, la directrice de la chambre de commerce, appelle à ne pas couper le dialogue : « ​​​​​​​Trump doit comprendre que ses décisions touchent des millions de personnes. Il doit revoir sa stratégie vis-à-vis de l'Afrique du Sud. Comme je le dis toujours : garde tes amis près de toi, mais tes ennemis encore plus près. »

Texas thought they could walk into Athens and steal one in Sanford Stadium. They thought wrong. The Bulldog faithful showed up and showed out - and so did our guys on the field. Then we cruised through lowly Charlotte to put us in great shape heading into rivalry weekend, with a great matchup against a talented Georgia Tech team. Of course, Tech is reeling from Pittsburgh taking them out to the wood shed last weekend. Thankfully, the Dawgs seem to be heading in the better direction. It will be a fun one in Mercedes Benz, where there are sure to be significantly more folks dressed in red and black than gold and white. Happy Thanksgiving, folks!
