En este podcast vamos a hablar de técnica… y de dinero. Vamos a hablar de imaginación… y de dinero. Vamos a reflexionar sobre modularidad… y sobre el dinero. Porque las marcas, para desarrollar diferentes motores, hacen “trampas” para ahorrar… ¡Dinero! Entre lo que las marcas hacen “de verdad” y lo que cuentan… hay un largo trecho. Cuantas veces he ido a una presentación y me han vendido la burra de lo mucho que se habían empleado en desarrollar un nuevo motor… que de nuevo no tiene nada. ¿Sabes que es un motor modular? ¡Vamos a explicarlo! Aunque te pueda parecer otra cosa, lo realmente complicado de un motor es desarrollar cada cilindro, especialmente la culata. Una vez que has definido el pistón, la forma de la culata, toda la distribución, la posición de la bujía, etc., pues ya tienes el motor hecho. De hecho, las fabricantes de motores comienzan generalmente con un motor monocilíndricos y luego combinando cilindros, los hacen de 2, 4, 5 o los cilindros que sean. Cierto es que la disposición influye y que unos cilindros, cobre todo las vibraciones y las inercias de los pistones, interaccionan unos con otros. Pero no es menos cierto que una vez que has diseñado, por ejemplo, un motor de 4 cilindros, hacer uno de 3 es sencillo: Quitas uno y añades unos árboles de equilibrado. Y hacer un de 5, más sencillo, añades un cilindro. O hacer un V8, que combinas dos bancadas de 4 en V a 90 grados y ya lo tienes hecho. Como os decía al comenzar, ¿cuál es la mayor ventaja de este sistema? Pues que ahorras mucho, mucho dinero. Por eso es un procedimiento que se usaba antes… y se sigue usando ahora. Vamos a ver 10 ejemplo… y un Bonus Track.. 1. Aston Martin Project 003. La marca inglesa ha anunciado un futuro motor V6 con turbo y alrededor de 3 litros que obviamente sería menos potente que su V12 de 5,2 litros biturbo que alcanza y supera los 700 CV, pero que podría alcanzar incluso 450 con menos peso y tamaño. 2. Audi Quattro: Con 5 cilindros. Sencillamente Audi necesitaba más potencia y necesitaba motores para colocarlos en sus coches de tracción delantera, sin que hubiese que hacer cambios. Así que partiendo de la base del motor 4 cilindros de 1,6/1,8 litros añadió otro más. 3. Audi: V6 y V6+2. Audi le fue bien y siguió por ese camino, pero pasándose a los motores en V que tienen ventajas de compacidad… y que pueden llegar a los 8 cilindros. 4. BMW de 3, 4 y 6 cilindros. En 2014, BMW presento su familia modular que comprendía desde motores de 3 cilindros y 1.5 litros a motores de 6 cilindros y 3 litros. Como veis y como veremos, la cilindrada unitaria de unos 500 cm3 en una buena idea y muchos motores parte de esa premisa. 5. Bugatti W16: La suma de dos V8. Son dos motores V6 de “V estrecha” con dos cilindros más para hacerlos V8 y colocados juntos. Un lío, pero si quieres 1.001 CV hay que complicarse un poco la vida… aunque no harían falta tantos cilindros. 5. Ferrari y Alfa Romeo: ¿V8 o V6? Quizás uno de los mejores ejemplos de motor modular es la familia de motores Ferrari de clave F154 que usan Alfa Romeo, Maserati y la propia Ferrari. 7. Mercedes FAME: 4, 6 u 8, a elegir. Mercedes-Benz ha creado su propia familia de motores que denomina FAME que viene de “Family of Modular Engines”. Es de las más amplias. 8. VW de “V estrecha”, VR5 y VR6. En VW se inspiraron en un motor extraño, el V4 de Lancia con una V de un poquito menos de 13 grados, lo que permitía hacer un motor muy compacto. De hecho, hicieron un V6 a 15 grados muy compacto. 9. Renault tipo N: ¿4 o 5? En realidad, es un motor de origen Volvo denominado N7Q cuando es de 4 cilindros y N7U cuando es de 5 cilindros. Se ofrece con cilindradas de 1948 cm3 a 2.435 cm3 y potencias de 136 a 165 CV. 10. Volvo E Drive: ¡Desde 2 cilindros! Volvo diseño a finales de los años 2010 una familia de motores modulares que, según ellos, podían usarse de 2 a 6 cilindros. De momento sirvió para que Volvo utilizase por primea vez un tricilíndrico de 1,5 litros en su XC40 anunciando unos consumos ajustadísimos. Bonus Track. Porsche 968: Medio V8. Lo de los motores modulares, aunque al principio la idea no fuese esa, no es cosa nueva. No os fieis de la IA´s… al menos de momento. Según ellas el Porsche 944 legó a llevar un motor 4 cilindros de 3 litros. Falso. Lo cierto es que el Porsche 924, un diseño de Porsche para VW, lo recompró la propia marca y lo vendió con motor VW. El coche sabía a poco. Luego lanzaron el 944 con motor de 2.5 litros y que recurrió al turbo. Y por fin, encontraron una solución. Tenían el excelente motor V8 del 928, diseñado por Porsche desde cero y que era una verdadera joya que llegó a alcanzar los 5,4 litros. Y alguien pensó: ¿Y si utilizamos medio motor V8? Dicho y hecho, subieron la cilindrada unitaria hasta los 750 cm3 y montaron arboles de equilibrado. Otra joya, que conozco bien, y que alcanzaba los 250 CV. Conclusión. La cierto es que cuando se hacen las cosas bien, los motores modulares son buenos para el fabricante y buenos para los consumidores… lo que sucede es que a veces los ahorros excesivos repercuten en la calidad… que es lo que ha pasado, por ejemplo, a alguna que otra empresa, como la que comienza por Ja y acaba por ar, o la que comienza por Ste y acaba en tis… y no quiero decir nombres.

La Citroën C15 es un mito… pero es de los pocos vehículos que ha conseguido ser un mito “en vida”, cuando aún podías ir a un concesionario y comprarla… algo raro, poco habitual y reservado a las verdaderas leyendas. El Berlingo nació para sustituir a la C15, pero convivió con ella ¡nada menos que 9 años! ¿Es que acaso no tenía argumentos para “reemplazar” a la C15? ¿O es que la leyenda de la C15 superaba la realidad? Vamos a verlo. Que me gustan las furgonetas es algo que nunca he ocultado. Como decía mi gran amigo, tristemente desaparecido, Ramón Roca, este tipo de vehículos ha hecho más por el hombre, por facilitar nuestra vida, que los grandes, lujoso y exóticos deportivos. Y hoy os traemos un verdadero mito: La C15, o mejor dos, porque para mí la Berlingo, también lo es… Citroën ya sabía de esto, de diseñar las entonces llamadas “derivadas”; furgonetas que tomaban la parte delantera de un turismo, modestos por lo general, con una trasera putamente de furgoneta. La primera furgoneta de este tipo sobre base del 2CV se comenzó a vender en 1951… Es decir, que cuando apareció la C15 en 1984 Citroën llevaba fabricando este tipo de furgonetas 33 años… algo sabría del tema. Y ese quedó demostrado, pues la verdad es que la C15, basada en el Visa, les salió “redonda”. No nos engañemos, la C15 nunca fue bonita… Entonces ¿cuál era su encantó? Pues que la C15 era sólida, no tenía ruidos ni crujidos ni a plena carga, su chasis y su chapa eran durísimos, verás pocas o ninguna oxidada. Esto en cuanto a la carrocería. En cuanto al motor… más de lo mismo. Para comenzar, ya era una novedad que montase un motor Diesel. La versión inicial de 1.769 cm3 y 60 CV era duro como una roca y gastaba poquísimo. Y como colofón, su mantenimiento era muy reducido. Además de todas estas cualidades era amplia, capaz incluso para 6 pasajeros, 4 detrás, aunque la mixta siempre se homologo para 5 y cómoda. Respondía a esa idea de vehículo ideal para el trabajo entre semana que, con una buena limpieza, era perfecto como coche familiar… A mediados de los 90, Citroën comienza a pensar en sustituir a la ya veterana, aunque aún exitosa, Citroën C15. En este segmento llegan o anuncian su inminente llegada muchas marcas antes ausentes, como Fiat, Opel, Mercedes-Benz o VW. Por otra parte, Citroën ya trabaja casi siempre de forma conjunta con Peugeot… a veces dirigida por Peugeot, para bien y para mal. Peugeot había trabajado conjuntamente con Fiat para hacer furgonetas medianas y grandes. Y al Visa, de alguna manera, le sustituye el AX, un coche excelente, pero no se me ocurre una base peor para una furgoneta derivada que este modelo, más pequeño y ligero que el Visa, pero quizás no tan robusto pensando en semejante uso. Así que deciden abordar desde cero el diseño de una furgoneta ligera, pequeña y nacida ya como furgoneta, no como derivado de nada. Citroën y Peugeot se ponen manos a la obra y en 1996 en España se comienza a vender el Berlingo, como modelo para relevar a la C15. Muchas veces se dice que el público español no estaba preparado para un sustituto de la C15. Puede que sea cierto. La primera prueba que publiqué como periodista fue la de la Citroën C15. Y la primera prueba que se publicó en España del Berlingo la escribí yo tras hacer muchos kilómetros por todo tipo de vías con y sin carga. He titulado este video “derribando mitos” y ha llegado el momento de hacerlo: El Berlingo era mejor en todo que la C15. En todo. En vez de por fuera o en vez de contar como va, voy a comenzar por el interior. Porque según me dieron el Berlingo y me subí, me pareció casi lujoso, desde luego diría que lujoso comparado con la C15. La calidad percibida de los plásticos, su aspecto, el confort de los asientos, incluso su tamaño, estaban a otro nivel. Desde luego Citroën se había empeñado en “dignificar” las furgonetas y con el Berlingo, dio en diana. Del Berlingo me impresionó su comportamiento que, os vais a reír, me pareció, en vacío o a media carga, casi deportivo. Los tarados más bien duros pensados para la carga, sumados a la mayor anchura de vías, hacían que el Berlingo, comparado a la C15, pareciese un vehículos mucho más ágil y estable… y es que lo era. El equipo de Citroën tenía un reto: Diseñar algo parecido a la C15, pero más moderno y aerodinámico, que no supusiera una ruptura con el C15. Y en mi opinión, lo consiguieron. A pesar de ofrecerse el Berlingo muchos compradores preferían la “honesta” y fiable C15 en vez del nuevo Berlingo. Esto supuso una sorpresa para Citroën, que en ningún momento pensó que ambas furgonetas iban a convivir, en concreto en el mercado español, entre 1996, que se lanzó el Berlingo, y el 2005, que dejó de fabricarse la C15.

El gobierno de Keir Starmer eliminó en abril de este año el régimen de no domiciliados o “non doms”, un estatus fiscal que permitía a extranjeros residentes en el Reino Unido tributar sólo por los ingresos generados en el país, eximiendo así todo lo que ganasen en el extranjero. El sistema tenía más de dos siglos de antigüedad, pero Starmer se las está viendo negras para cuadrar el presupuesto. La deuda pública es muy elevada, las infraestructuras se encuentran deterioradas y los problemas del sistema sanitario se acumulan. Con esto pretendía recaudar 35.000 millones de libras de aquí a 2030. Pero no está sucediendo eso. El fin del régimen non dom ha desencadenado un éxodo de millonarios, lo que hace sospechar a muchos que esta medida quizá termine costando dinero al Estado. El régimen en cuestión fue creado en 1799 por William Pitt el Joven durante las guerras napoleónicas. Buscaba atraer millonarios para financiar el esfuerzo bélico. Con el tiempo se convirtió en una herramienta para posicionar a Londres como un gran centro financiero que atraía a comerciantes, banqueros y empresarios de las colonias del imperio británico. Ya en el siglo XX se empleó para que navieros griegos, banqueros franceses, industriales alemanes, jeques árabes y oligarcas rusos se estableciesen en Londres. En tanto que siempre se trataba de gente muy rica, realizaban elevados gastos en la ciudad, por lo que la Hacienda británica se beneficiaba de forma indirecta. La eliminación de este régimen viene a recordarnos la dificultad de subir los impuestos a los muy ricos, quienes, gracias a su movilidad y recursos, pueden mudarse a jurisdicciones con impuestos más benignos como Dubái, Suiza, Mónaco o Singapur. Estos lugares ofrecen grandes incentivos fiscales como el pago anual de una cantidad fija sin que tengan que declarar los ingresos que realizan en el extranjero. A cambio, estos millonarios se mudan y efectúan buena parte de sus gastos en su lugar de residencia. Londres, con su atractivo estilo de vida (mansiones, apartamentos caros, clubes, restaurantes), creía que retendría a estos millonarios, pero a la vista está que muchos valoran más su dinero que el lugar donde viven. Cuando el Gobierno de Rishi Sunak anunció el año pasado que pondría fin a ese régimen se realizaron algunos cálculos. Estimaban que entre un 10 y un 12% de los 74.000 non-doms que actualmente viven en el país se iban a marchar, pero están siendo muchos más y algunos temen que se terminen largando no menos de la mitad. Esto preocupa en el Gobierno, ya que, aunque no pagaban impuestos por sus ingresos en el extranjero, contribuían con IVA, tasas locales, impuestos especiales y transmisiones inmobiliarias. El impacto económico ya se está dejando sentir: las ventas de propiedades de más de 7 millones de libras han caído un 40%, su precio, de hecho, está ya más bajo que hace diez años, y las ventas de marcas de automóviles de gama alta como Mercedes Benz han disminuido un 9%. Negocios de lujo, colegios de élite y boutiques también han visto bajar su facturación. Entretanto, otros países europeos como Italia y Portugal se han decidido a atraer a estos millonarios ofreciéndoles acuerdos fiscales muy favorables. En un par de años sabremos cuántos se han ido y cuánto le ha costado al Estado dar este paso, pero por de pronto todo indica que el Reino Unido perderá más de lo que ganará. Formerly flying under the GLK banner, Mercedes-Benz shook up its crossover and SUV lineup to better coordinate with its current line of coupes and sedans. In the aftermath of the U.S. bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities, we welcome back Theodore Postol, Professor of Science, Technology and National Security Policy Emeritus at MIT to give his expert technical assessment on where that assault leaves the Iranian nuclear program. After a brutal initial barrage by the United States, followed by tit-for-tat exchanges between Israel and Iran, the U.S. is seeking to broker a ceasefire between the two states. On Truth Social, Trump posted “ISRAEL is not going to attack Iran. All planes will turn around and head home, while doing a friendly ‘Plane Wave' to Iran. Nobody will be hurt, the Ceasefire is in effect!” Just hours after this however, Israel did in fact bomb targets in Tehran, per Reuters. Israel also claims to have intercepted missiles fired from Iran following the ceasefire agreement. In the wake of the initial attacks, journalist Séamus Malekafzali reported that the “Iranian communist party Tudeh and the Communist Party of Israel [Hadash] release[d] a joint statement condemning the Israeli war on Iran, saying Israel's intent is to make the region ‘bow down to [US] imperialism' and that the only solution is full nuclear disarmament in the Middle East.” Israel's nuclear capabilities are an open secret in Washington, with estimates that the country possess between 90 and 400 nuclear warheads.2. In Congress, Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia has put forth a War Powers resolution in an attempt to check Trump's unilateral escalation in Iran. According to Newsweek, he expects to get Republican votes in the Senate. In the House, the effort is led by Reps. Ro Khanna and maverick Republican Thomas Massie, whom Trump has become so enraged with that he recently launched a PAC to oust him from his seat, per Axios. Meanwhile, AOC issued a statement reading, “The President's disastrous decision to bomb Iran without authorization is a grave violation of the Constitution and Congressional War Powers. He has impulsively risked launching a war that may ensnare us for generations. It is absolutely and clearly grounds for impeachment.” Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, asked about AOC's impeachment comments, replied “No, no, that's a big threshold to cross,” per David Weigel.3. The escalation in Iran has exposed fissures in Trump's orbit. PBS reports major MAGA figures like Steve Bannon, Tucker Carlson and Marjorie Taylor-Greene are openly opposed, while Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has reportedly drawn Trump's ire for a string of comments out of step with the administration's messaging, starting with a video earlier this month in which she accused “political elites and warmongers [of] carelessly fomenting fear and tension between nuclear powers,” per the Independent. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has been iced out completely, according to the Washington Post.4. In more news concerning the administration, the Project on Government Oversight (POGO) has published a new report, finding that “Stephen Miller…Trump's powerful deputy chief of staff and homeland security advisor…has a personal financial stake…[of] up to a quarter million dollars of stock in Palantir.” POGO describes Palantir, the shadowy tech company founded by rightwing tech oligarch Peter Thiel, as “woven into the operations of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and used by other federal agencies such as the Pentagon.” POGO and other experts see this as a glaring potential conflict of interest. In an almost darkly comedic twist, “Democratic lawmakers have recently sought information from Palantir, [but] they are in the minority and cannot compel the company to produce records. A person who could is Representative James Comer (R-KY), the chairman of the [House] oversight committee...However, Comer bought…Palantir stock the day after Trump's inauguration…his only stock trade that day.” Palantir is the second-best-performing S&P 500 stock in 2025, with shares up 74% year-to-date, per Business Insider.5. In a rare case of corruption actually being prosecuted, the New York Times reports former New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez reported for his eleven-year prison sentence on June 17th. “After a nine-week trial in Manhattan, Mr. Menendez…became the only U.S. senator ever to be convicted of acting as an agent of a foreign government,” after taking part in a “yearslong bribery conspiracy” that included payoffs in the form of “kilo bars of gold, a Mercedes-Benz convertible and more than $480,000 in cash.” Menendez is now incarcerated at the Federal Correctional Institution, Schuylkill, a medium-security federal prison in Minersville, Pennsylvania. He has been assigned the prisoner number 67277-050.6. In other news, POLITICO reports, “FICO plans to launch a suite of credit scores later this year that incorporate [Buy Now Pay Later or BNPL] data, providing lenders a window into…consumers' repayment behavior on these increasingly popular installment loans.” As BNPL data has not been included in credit reporting before, this has become known as “phantom debt…a gigantic black box…[and] largely unregulated.” This story notes that the Trump administration CFPB has “dropped planned enforcement of a Biden administration rule that would have treated BNPL providers like credit card companies,” subjecting this industry to daylight and financial regulation. The administration's abandonment of this rule mirrors their declassification of cryptocurrency as securities in order to skirt SEC oversight. Many questions remain over how exactly BNPL data will factor into consumers' credit scores, but many are bracing for this data to reveal a growing chasm of consumer debt underpinning the already shaky economic picture.7. Meanwhile Mahmoud Khalil, the Columbia University student and activist abducted by ICE on the eve of his son's birth – despite being a legal permanent resident – has finally been freed. Khalil was held in federal immigration detention in Louisiana for 104 days, per AP. Following his release, Khalil said “Justice prevailed, but it's very long overdue.” Khalil's legal battle will continue. Khalil stated in an interview with NPR, “My release is just the first step. The legal fight is still very, very long. The administration appealed the decision about my release, but we will prove our case – that what happened…was textbook retaliation against the First Amendment, that I was targeted because of speech the government did not like, and that there was nothing wrong with the speech I was engaged in. I want to make sure that everyone who contributed to my arrest will be held accountable.”8. Backlash to Trump's immigration policies is not confined to the political and legal realms either. Newsweek reports that the new Pope, Leo XIV, has “called for priests, deacons and parish leaders to accompany migrants to court and stand in solidarity with them.” This is an encouraging sign for those who hoped Leo would follow in the footsteps of Pope Francis. It also puts the new Pope at odds with more conservative American Catholics, such as Vice-President JD Vance who converted in adulthood. In May, Leo's brother John Prevost told New York Times that the new Pope, “has great, great desire to help the downtrodden and the disenfranchised, the people who are ignored.”9. In another immigration flashpoint, “A gang of masked federal agents swarmed, manhandled, and detained New York City Comptroller Brad Lander…as he sought to assist a defendant out of immigration court,” according to the American Prospect. The Prospect notes this arrest is “the latest instance of political violence against opposition party members, which has included the arrests of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and New Jersey Rep. LaMonica McIver…the arrest of Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan…and the brief detention of Sen. Alex Padilla.” Lander was released several hours after he was detained, when New York Governor Kathy Hochul showed up in person to demand his release. She called his arrest “b******t.” Later, in an interview with Joe Gallina, Lander said, “Courts tell undocumented immigrants their cases are ‘dismissed.' But what they really dismiss… is their asylum status. Then ICE grabs them. No lawyer. No warning.”10. Finally, 33-year-old democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani trounced disgraced former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary on Tuesday, winning by a completely unforeseen seven-point landslide. Polls up to election day showed Cuomo winning, some by as much as 24 points. Mamdani, a state legislator since 2021, ran on a platform of affordability, including making city buses free, establishing city-owned grocery stores and freezing the rent for all stabilized tenants. This platform – paired with cogent messaging, an extraordinary grassroots organizing campaign and shrewd alliances with other progressive candidates like Brad Lander – won the day for Zohran. However, an air of uncertainty about November remains. Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams still plans to run for reelection as an independent and Cuomo hasn't ruled out doing the same, per the Hill. While many who endorsed or donated to Cuomo in the primary – some now openly admitting they merely did so out of fear of reprisal – have switched their allegiance to Mamdani, some are maintaining a hostile posture towards the presumptive Democratic nominee.
