Back in October 2018, my friend Liam and I sat down with Julian Burnside AO QC. Julian is a barrister, human rights and asylum seeker advocate, and has recently turned to politics as a way of making change. What's most curious about our interview with Julian is that he told us again and again that he wasn't interested in politics, and that he wasn't willing to comment on political topics (outside human rights and asylum seeker related themes).

Julian Burnside AO QC is an Australian barrister, human rights and refugee advocate, and author. He is known for his staunch opposition to the mandatory detention of asylum seekers and has provided legal counsel in a wide variety of high-profile offshore-detention legal cases. In this podcast, we delved into Julian's experience representing refugees and asylum seekers against the Australian government and its departments - principally the ‘Department of Immigration and Border Protection' (now subsumed into the new 'Department of Home Affairs'). Throughout, we discussed the importance of human rights advocacy, explore his impact in the Tampa case and beyond and prompted his reflections on the past and present detention policies as well as some of the rationales put forward to justify them. Finally, Julian sheds light on what we can look forward to in the future and where he sees the need for change. Despite international criticism, asylum seekers and refugees have been labelled as ‘illegals’, and painted as threats to Australia’s security. On this very special Policy Forum Pod, we talk to Julian Burnside AO QC about why politicians seem to be so unwilling to engage in honest discussions about refugees, and what lessons we can draw from history to change public attitudes and refocus on the value of human rights.Pod presenters Sharon Bessell and Julia Ahrens also discuss Donald Trump’s support for Turkey, Germany’s plans to introduce higher taxes on flight tickets, and look at some of your comments and suggestions for future episodes of Policy Forum Pod.Julian Burnside is an Australian barrister. Podcast recording of the event: La Trobe University - Ideas & Society ProgramAustralia and the refugees who come by boat Convened by La Trobe University’s Emeritus Professor Robert ManneTwo of Australia’s most respected social justice fighters, Julian Burnside AO QC and Father Frank Brennan SJ AO have been following Australia’s asylum seeker policy for decades. On many questions connected to asylum seekers who come by boat their viewpoints differ. They speak to the following questions: What should Australia’s asylum seeker/refugee policy be? What ought to be done to help those refugees living in Australia on temporary protection visas? How can the lives of those still on Nauru and Manus Island be saved? And most deeply, how can the cruelty of Australia’s asylum seeker policy be explained?Kurdish writer Behrouz Boochani, author of No Friend But the Mountains, addresses the six year ordeal faced by those still marooned on Nauru or Manus Island. Behrouz believes very strongly that the voice of the refugees has not been heard in this debate. He participates in the discussion of the policy options and the moral imperatives in Australia’s discussions of refugee policy in general and in particular on the fate of those who have been detained on Manus Island and Nauru over the past six years. DISCLAIMER: The content of this podcast are presented for archival and informational purposes.
