Full Text of ReadingsTwenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 129The Saint of the day is Blessed Frdric OzanamBlessed Frédéric Ozanam’s Story A man convinced of the inestimable worth of each human being, Frédéric served the poor of Paris well, and drew others into serving the poor of the world. Through the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, which he founded, his work continues to the present day. Frédéric Ozanam was the fifth of Jean and Marie Ozanam's 14 children, one of only three to reach adulthood. As a teenager he began having doubts about his religion. Reading and prayer did not seem to help, but long walking discussions with Father Noirot of the Lyons College clarified matters a great deal. Frédéric wanted to study literature, although his father, a doctor, wanted him to become a lawyer. Frédéric yielded to his father's wishes and in 1831, arrived in Paris to study law at the University of the Sorbonne. When certain professors there mocked Catholic teachings in their lectures, Frédéric defended the Church. A discussion club which Frédéric organized sparked the turning point in his life. In this club, Catholics, atheists, and agnostics debated the issues of the day. Once, after Frédéric spoke about Christianity's role in civilization, a club member said: “Let us be frank, Mr. Ozanam; let us also be very particular. What do you do besides talk to prove the faith you claim is in you?” Frédéric Ozanam was stung by the question. He soon decided that his words needed a grounding in action. He and a friend began visiting Paris tenements and offering assistance as best they could. Soon a group dedicated to helping individuals in need under the patronage of Saint Vincent de Paul formed around Frédéric. Feeling that the Catholic faith needed an excellent speaker to explain its teachings, Frédéric convinced the Archbishop of Paris to appoint Dominican Father Jean-Baptiste Lacordaire, the greatest preacher then in France, to preach a Lenten series in Notre Dame Cathedral. It was well-attended and became an annual tradition in Paris. After Frédéric Ozanam earned his law degree at the Sorbonne, he taught law at the University of Lyons. He also earned a doctorate in literature. Soon after marrying Amelie Soulacroix on June 23, 1841, he returned to the Sorbonne to teach literature. A well-respected lecturer, Frédéric worked to bring out the best in each student. Meanwhile, the Saint Vincent de Paul Society was growing throughout Europe. Paris alone counted 25 conferences. In 1846, Frédéric, Amelie, and their daughter Marie went to Italy; there he hoped to restore his poor health. They returned the next year. The revolution of 1848 left many Parisians in need of the services of the Saint Vincent de Paul conferences. The unemployed numbered 275,000. The government asked Frédéric and his coworkers to supervise the government aid to the poor. Vincentians throughout Europe came to the aid of Paris. Frédéric then started a newspaper, The New Era, dedicated to securing justice for the poor and the working classes. Fellow Catholics were often unhappy with what Frédéric wrote. Referring to the poor man as “the nation's priest,” Frédéric said that the hunger and sweat of the poor formed a sacrifice that could redeem the people's humanity. In 1852, poor health again forced Frédéric to return to Italy with his wife and daughter. He died on September 8, 1853. In his sermon at Frédéric's funeral, Fr. Lacordaire described his friend as “one of those privileged creatures who came direct from the hand of God in whom God joins tenderness to genius in order to enkindle the world.” Frédéric was beatified in 1997. Since Frédéric wrote an excellent book entitled Franciscan Poets of the Thirteenth Century, and since his sense of the dignity of each poor person was so close to the thinking of Saint Francis, it seemed appropriate to include him among Franciscan “greats.” His liturgical feast is celebrated on September 9. Reflection Frédéric Ozanam always respected the poor while offering whatever service he could. Each man, woman, and child was too precious to live in poverty. Serving the poor taught Frédéric something about God that he could not have learned elsewhere. Learn more about the legacy of Frédéric Ozanam! Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

With Israel's plan to go deeper into Gaza, the scenario looks intractable. Israel itself is increasingly isolated on the world stage. So what tools might be available to the United Nations to “force” a ceasefire and end the siege of Gaza? And if the United Nations Security Council should decide to deploy peacekeepers in the occupied territories, even Gaza itself, what could that look like? GUEST: EUGENE CHEN is a Senior Fellow at New York University's Center on International Cooperation and wrote a piece about the hypothetical UN involvement in the Gaza conflict. In our near neighbour, Malaysia, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is facing increasing pressure from the Islamist opposition to take an even stronger stand against Israel and the United States over the ongoing Gaza war. Anwar himself comes from an Islamist background, but he presides over a coalition that many in this Muslim nation fear is too liberal. And Donald Trump's nomination of an Australian-born activist as the next US ambassador has also ignited fireworks. GUEST: Professor SYAZA SHUKRI of International Islamic University of Malaysia joined a recent forum at the Lowy Institute, and spoke with us afterwards.Treasurer Jim Chalmers convenes his productivity summit next week, trying to balance competing proposals to lower or raise taxes. 6/25/25 - Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati was an Italian layman who combined a deep spiritual life with a passion for social justice and adventure. Born in 1901 to a wealthy family in Turin, Frassati chose a life of simplicity and service over privilege. He was an avid mountain climber, a student of engineering, and a committed member of Catholic Action and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Despite his short life (he died at just 24 from polio contracted while serving the poor), Frassati left behind a legacy of holiness that continues to inspire young people around the world. He attended daily Mass, spent hours in Eucharistic Adoration, and fearlessly defended the dignity of the marginalized during a time of political unrest in Italy. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II, who called him “a man of the Beatitudes.”

Full Text of ReadingsHoly Saturday At the Easter Vigil in the Holy Night of Easter Lectionary: 41The Saint of the day is Saint Gianna Beretta MollaSaint Gianna Beretta Molla's Story In less than 40 years, Gianna Beretta Molla became a pediatric physician, a wife, a mother and a saint! She was born in Magenta near Milano, the tenth of Alberto and Maria Beretta's 13 children. An active member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and a leader in the Catholic Action movement, Gianna also enjoyed skiing and mountain climbing. She earned degrees in medicine and surgery from the University of Pavia, eventually specializing in pediatrics. In 1952, Gianna opened a clinic in the small town of Mesero, where she met engineer Pietro Molla. Shortly before their 1955 marriage, Gianna wrote to Pietro: “Love is the most beautiful sentiment that the Lord has put into the soul of men and women.” In the next four years the Mollas had three children: Pierluigi, Mariolina, and Laura. Two pregnancies following ended in miscarriage. Early in her final pregnancy, doctors discovered that Gianna had both a child and a tumor in her uterus. She allowed the surgeons to remove the tumor but not to perform the complete hysterectomy that they recommended, which would have killed the child. Seven months later in April 1962, Gianna Emanuela Molla was born at the hospital in Monza, but post-operative complications resulted in an infection for her mother. The following week Gianna Molla died at home, and was buried in the cemetery of Mesero. Gianna Emanuela went on to become a physician herself. Gianna Beretta Molla was beatified in 1994 and canonized 10 years later. Her liturgical feast is celebrated on April 28. Reflection With great faith and courage, Gianna Molla made the choice that enabled her daughter to be born. We can often wish that we were in different circumstances, but holiness frequently comes from making difficult choices in bad situations. Why do you help the poor? In a culture where lending a hand to those in need is often seen as a noble thing to do, it's crucial for us as Christians to understand the deeper motivation behind our actions. As believers, we serve the poor out of love—a love that sees Jesus in the faces of those in need. To delve into this profound aspect of service, I invite you to listen to my recent conversation with Jill Lynch, Executive Director of the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Omaha. In this enlightening discussion, Jill shares her insights on recognizing the humanity and inherent worth of homeless individuals, challenging stereotypes and emphasizing the importance of empathy and dignity. Jill sheds light on the obstacles faced by the homeless, from securing identification to accessing transportation, and discusses proactive measures to prevent homelessness among the working poor. Through personal anecdotes, she illustrates the holistic approach of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, offering targeted assistance to those on the brink of homelessness. Above all, Jill emphasizes the profound truth that serving the poor is not just an act of charity, but a way to encounter Christ Himself. By treating each individual with respect and compassion, we fulfill the mission of seeing the face of Jesus in the marginalized. Full Text of ReadingsFriday of the Third Week of Easter Lectionary: 277The Saint of the day is Saint Gianna Beretta MollaSaint Gianna Beretta Molla's Story In less than 40 years, Gianna Beretta Molla became a pediatric physician, a wife, a mother and a saint! Diagnosed with aggressive cancer, chemotherapy failed, leading to the amputation of her arm. Struggling to regain independence, she was fitted with a Hero Arm by UK-based Open Bionics. Zella's mother, Rachel, initially took her to the doctor for sleeping and vision issues, but Zella was quickly diagnosed, and chemotherapy caused her to lose her hair. In support, Milo and his grandmother, Sue Goodjohn, shaved their heads to raise funds for charity Neuroblastoma UK. Both Milo and Sue's head-shaving event took place on Sue's 56th birthday, December 1st, raising a considerable amount for the charity. STORY 5: Inactive kids more likely to have stroke or heart attack later in life A new study warns that children who lead sedentary lifestyles may face a higher risk of stroke or heart attack in adulthood. Researchers found that physically inactive children might develop high cholesterol in early adulthood, leading to heart health issues in their mid-forties. Sedentary time in childhood was linked to a significant increase in cholesterol levels before the mid-twenties, suggesting it could be a major risk factor for premature heart attacks or strokes. The study also revealed that light-intensity physical activity in childhood may be more effective than moderate-to-vigorous activity in reversing the adverse effects of sedentary time on cholesterol. We'll be back in a moment Break 3:  ESOG – GLOW LIGHT SHOW STORY 6: Georgia Home Prices Increased 141% Over the Last Decade, 4th Largest Increase in U.S.Over the past decade, U.S. home values have surged by over 100%, outpacing the growth in average hourly earnings (41%) and the Consumer Price Index (32%). While the COVID-19 recession led to an unprecedented 49% national increase in home prices from 2020 to 2022, prices have stabilized, aligning the recovery more closely with historical norms. Western states and select Southeastern states, particularly Idaho and Florida, experienced the most substantial home price growth. Florida cities, such as Miami Gardens, saw remarkable surges, with median home prices increasing by over 200%, twice the national average, over the past decade. STORY 7: Buford Dam Road to have temporary closures Dec. 18-21 Buford Dam Road will be closed between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. from Monday, Dec. 18, through Thursday, Dec. 21, for guard rail maintenance, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Full Text of ReadingsThursday of the Twenty-second Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 434The Saint of the day is Blessed Frdric OzanamBlessed Frédéric Ozanam’s Story A man convinced of the inestimable worth of each human being, Frédéric served the poor of Paris well, and drew others into serving the poor of the world. Through the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, which he founded, his work continues to the present day. Frédéric was the fifth of Jean and Marie Ozanam's 14 children, one of only three to reach adulthood. What do you do besides talk to prove the faith you claim is in you?” Frédéric was stung by the question. After Frédéric earned his law degree at the Sorbonne, he taught law at the University of Lyons.

What do you do besides talk to prove the faith you claim is in you?” Frédéric was stung by the question. After Frédéric earned his law degree at the Sorbonne, he taught law at the University of Lyons.
