Aleksandra shares her compelling journey from growing up in Poland amidst a community deeply affected by PTSD, to discovering her passion for healing through various somatic practices. She emphasizes the effectiveness of therapies that focus on bodily sensations and movements, drawing from her extensive background in physical therapy, yoga, qigong, and numerous other modalities. Her approach is grounded in the belief that therapy can be both impactful and enjoyable, moving away from the pain-centric narrative often associated with trauma recovery.Throughout the conversation, Aleksandra and Alex delve into the nuances of developmental trauma, differentiating it from shock traumas and highlighting its profound long-term effects on individuals' lives. They explore innovative therapeutic methods that cater to the body's memory and the nervous system's capacity for healing. The discussion illuminates the transformative power of somatic therapies like SensoriMotor Psychotherapy and the DARe (Dynamic Attachment Repatterning Experience) method, underscoring the importance of safety, connection, and the re-education of the nervous system towards positive experiences. For those intrigued by the therapeutic journey and the somatic approaches to healing trauma, this episode is a treasure trove of insights and methodologies that promise a path to recovery filled with compassion, understanding, and newfound strength. Content Warning: references to sexual abuseDr. T and The Truth Fairy explore the revelatory benefits that can emerge from the use of therapeutic touch in psychedelic healing practices, while always keeping caution and care in the forefront. The Truth Fairy's career and life journey have been grounded in touch therapy, starting with Shiatsu Therapy and incorporating such practices as craniosacral, visceral manipulation and somatic relational trauma-informed practices. Touch is healing in her path but she and Dr. T acknowledge that touch is very divorced from psychotherapy. Together, they explore why. They analyze how touch is currently controversial in psychedelic therapy in light of abuses in psychedelic culture. They discuss the importance of using touch with neutrality and uncoupling it from fear. The Truth Fairy explains the concept of self touch in a larger way than the taboo sense we grow up with, and details how being in tune with your physical self can contribute to healing. They break down the concepts of safety, containment, processing, and the use of touch for focusing, and discuss ways in which careful, judicious touch therapy can help externalize psychological pain.“We really have coupled touch and sexuality and we really need to uncouple that…. We have to find a respectful way to uncouple sexuality and touch and create possibilities for neutral touch.” - The Truth FairyResources mentioned in this episode:Kathy L. Kathy L. Kain, PhD returns to share her unparalleled expertise on effective use of somatic interventions in in-person and online psychotherapy. She gets very specific about what interventions work and don’t work, and the kind of patients that may benefit or be underserved when the medium of contact is screen-only. And Kathy gives in-depth analysis of the interplay of awareness and points of contact in somatic interventions; regardless of whether the clinician has physical contact with a patient or not. We also take a deep dive into the role of intersubjectivity in somatic work—the importance of viewing the patient as the expert, and how to skillfully navigate somatic counter-transference while keeping in mind the patient’s benefit and maintenance of therapeutic and relational connection. This episode is appropriate for both somatic practitioners as well as novices who may be interested in the mechanics of this work, particularly in the psychotherapeutic process.
