Matt and Briar discuss "A Man Alone." Keiko O'Brien's qualifications are questioned. A throwaway joke by Briar becomes a prophecy for the ending of the Star Trek episode. And is Dr. Bashir's thirst out of hand? Rest in Peace, Rene Auberjonois.
Keiko O'Brien. Keiko O'Brien first appears in "Data's Day," a season four episode of The Next Generation in which she marries Miles O'Brien. Over the course of the 8 episodes of The Next Generation and 19 episodes of Deep Space Nine in which she appears, we see Keiko as a wife, a mother, a botanist, and a primary school teacher and we even learn a little bit about her family history. Keiko is far from a fan favorite, but what do we think about her when discussing the episodes she appears in and the arc of her character? In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Amy Nelson and Justin Oser are joined by Jenn Tifft of the Snap Trek podcast to talk about Keiko O'Brien. The discussion includes Keiko's relationship with her husband, Miles O'Brien, on both The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, her work as a botanist and school teacher, Keiko as a mother to her two children, what we think of her character overall in episodes spanning 10 seasons of Star Trek, and much more! TNG Characters Who Play Music. Music is an important element to the experience of watching episodes of The Next Generation, but there are also a number of characters on the show that play musical instruments themselves. What motivates them to play music and how might they use their talents as part of a music group? In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Justin Oser and Amy Nelson are joined by special guest Tony Robinson of Continuing Mission and Melodic Treks (Tony also creates the wonderful show art for Earl Grey) to talk about characters on The Next Generation that play music and the bands they might join or form. Characters discussed include Jean-Luc Picard, Will Riker, Data, Geordi La Forge, Miles O'Brien, Q, Keiko O'Brien, Nella Daren, and Jenna D'Sora. Schooling in Star Trek. On a Federation starship or space station, every day is an opportunity for learning. But for Starfleet officers whose families have joined them in space, providing a well-rounded education can be a challenge. Aboard the USS Enterprise-D, a host of professional educators were on hand, teaching everything from ancient history to calculus. Meanwhile, on Deep Space 9, an untrained amateur, Keiko O’Brien, stepped up to provide a curriculum tailored to the needs of the station’s dozen or so children. In this episode of Primitive Culture, host Duncan Barrett is joined by Amy Nelson of Earl Grey and The Edge to take a look at education in Star Trek. We also discuss the ways in which Star Trek has inspired Amy’s own teaching and how she has incorporated her fandom into her classroom. Mothers on TNG. The characters on The Next Generation, whether regular characters or guest stars are shaped by the important people in their lives, including their parents. On the show, we see a number of different mothers and mother figures. Their interactions with their children and the crew help to reveal important aspects of their lives that we might not otherwise see and of parenting in the 24th century. In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Richard Marquez, Amy Nelson, and Justin Oser take the opportunity as Mother's Day approaches in the United States to discuss the important mothers on The Next Generation and the impact that they have on their children and the show. The characters discussed are Lwaxana Troi, Deanna Troi, Beverly Crusher, Helena Rozhenko, Julianna Tainer, K’Ehleyr, Keiko O'Brien, Silva La Forge, and Guinan. Whoa, we did it! Season 1 is in the wraps! This week, Keiko O'Brien comes face to face with religious leader in JNCO's, Poey's juggalo past comes back to haunt him, and we all have to deal with the corruption of Big Jumja.
It’s total coincidence that the 200th episode of Trekabout coincides with Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s 30th Anniversary episode, but what a wonderful coincidence it is! First up: “The Assignment”, which introduces another element of Bajoran religious mythology while also being a first-rate “Let’s Torture O’Brien” episode. Then, it’s “Trials and Tribble-ations”, which, do we ...
Movie Meltdown - Episode 337 This week we talk with an actual Harlem Globetrotter! As we ask "Bull" Bullard what it's like to become part of the tradition and legacy of an organization that has been such a huge part of our pop culture. Plus we discuss our own memories of growing up with the Globetrotters, all before we settle in for our Sofa Theater discussion on the 1981 movie The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island. And as we put the finishing touches on the periodic table of movie elements, we also mention... Scatman Crothers, being in a basketball town, The Munsters, Triangle, Dawn Wells, The Equalizer, the colliding of franchises, Wet Hot American Summer, boiling beakers, Barbara Bain, winks to adults, dryer tube arms, Natalie Schafer as a cheerleader, American Ninja Warrior, Supermarket Sweep, Keiko O'Brien, getting a reunion movie for a TV show, Al Lewis, Jim Backus, calling for fouls, chewing up the scenery, Avatar, an knock-off R2-D2, Tina Louise, angling in their playing style, Marques Haynes, growing up tall, Alan Hale, Jr., Crimes and Misdemeanors, Arrested Development, Cassandra Peterson, that's an incredibly elaborate prop just to trick a dumb man into signing a piece of paper, keep the butter off the popcorn, Russell Johnson, the expanded universe, The Brady Bunch, Martin Landau, Space Jam, Whitney and the Robot, Meadowlark Lemon, The Mertzes thrown on an island, Ripley's Odditoriums, Bob Denver, The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders and... you probably shouldn't think too deeply about Gilligan's Island. "I'm pretty sure it is... some special level of hell, where they will just never get off that island." It’s been a while since we’ve been given a “Let’s Torture O’Brien” episode, and boy howdy does “Tribunal” deliver. Then, in “The Jem’Hadar”, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine blows up its own premise. Plus! Miles and Keiko sure do love each other, don’t they? iTunes Google Play RSS
A short update about Trekabout Presents.
Rascals Commentary. On its face, the plot of the seventh episode of The Next Generation's sixth season sounds ridiculous: Captain Picard, Ensign Ro, Guinan, and Keiko O'Brien are turned into children and must re-take control of the Enterprise-D from the Ferengi. However, this fun-filled episode remains a fan favorite (though it also has its detractors). Daniel, Darren, and Phillip provide commentary for this episode, complimenting the outstanding work of the children actors portraying our TNG characters. From the Ro Laren sub-plot of her tragic childhood to Jean-Luc's struggle with losing command to Alexander Rozhenko & friends helping to defeat the surprisingly evil Ferengi, this episode features many takeaways. Daniel also reveals why this episode is the pinpoint for Chief O'Brien leaving the Federation's flagship for Deep Space Nine. So re-learn to brush your hair, get your boys/girls-sized Starfleet uniform and become a "Number One" fan with this commentary of "Rascals." The guys at LISTEN TO THE PROPHETS: A STAR TREK DEEP SPACE NINE PODCAST wrap up their coverage of Season One with the episode "In the Hands of the Prophets". Political and religious tensions heat up on the station as Vedek Winn, played perfectly by the amazing Louise Fletcher, visits DS9 to make sure that Bajoran philosophy is being taught in Keiko O'Brien's school. Of course, it's not being taught to the extent the wannabe Kai desires, so a religious split between the Bajorans and the Federation is poised to break out, threatening all that Sisko and company have worked for over the past year. It's our first real look at the devious machinations that will be a centerpiece of the series' run and a great ending to the one of the best first seasons of Star Trek since the Original Series. Plus, Paul, Andy, and Shawn discuss the season as a whole and give their high and low points (ALAMARAINE!!!).
