"MARY BETH HUGHES - CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH" - 3/03/2025 For those of you who don't know the charms of MARY BETH HUGHES, when she was under contract at MGM, she was dubbed "the poor man's LANA TURNER." It was a rather unfair assessment since MGM gave Lana all the plum roles, and Mary Beth got her hand-me-downs. But still, Mary Beth had great comic chops, and no one played bitchy, hard-boiled blondes as well as she. Despite her beauty and talent, she never managed to get out of B-pictures. She did have small parts in great films like The Women (1939) and The Ox-Bow Incident (1942). She played the good girl as often as she played the bad girl, but when she played bad....you were in for a treat. Her pouty lips, snappy dialogue, and petulant attitude lit up many a lackluster production. This week, we celebrate her as our Star of the Month. "Lucky for you I come with my own airbags." We watched "Elvira's Haunted Hills" and she really is going to put someone eye out with those things. We already been knew that in this house we will throw down for "Elvira Mistress of the Dark" - the movie and the person. But does the long awaited sequel hold up? It took 13 years to write, finance and produce this homage to the Roger Corman produced, Vincent Price starring, Edgar Allan Poe movies of the 1960's and you can feel the inspiration all over the place. The spooky sets, the baroque (by way of the swinging '60s) costumes and of course Elvira herself, all give this movie the authenticity of those camp classics. Written by Cassandra Peterson and her longtime writing partner John Paragon (Jambi the Genie himself) the script is full of campy one liners, bawdy jokes and cheap visual gags - you know... classic Elvira. We may go Hard for the original movie, but this one really grows on you... kinda like a fungus - and that's why we love it! We've logged it 4 times on Letterboxd this year and it keeps getting funnier, EVERY SINGLE TIME WE SEE IT! How young is too young to launch your showgirl career? Why do the Red Hot Chili Peppers ruin everything? Is a decades-long goth girl beef even more odious than the Red Hot Chili Peppers? All these questions and more will be explored in this episode of the podcast! BBfBP theme song by True Creature. Today's Show we have the start to Spooky Season happening. For the month of October, at least one of my two interviews each week will be from the realm of Horror or True Crime. I am excited today to bring back to the show, the amazing Producer, Director and Author, Sam Irvin is joining me again. We talked in Sam's last interview about his friendship and working with the lovely Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, Cassandra Peterson. He directed her campy movie, “Elvira's Haunted Hills” and he has directed so many fun and spooky horror projects on both Television and the Silver Screen. Last time he was on we also talked about his book, a memoir, “I Was A Teenage Monster Hunter.” The book talked all about his growing up and interviewing a virtual who's who in the horror industry. Now, he has a new book, a behind the scenes of “Frankenstein A True Story,” that was a two part miniseries on television with some of the most queer infused content produced at the time. So much so, the behind the scenes team called themselves the Lavender Mob. Sam also gives us the name of an up and coming filmmaker to be on the watch for. In this week's episode, we're enjoying the company of one of our patron saints, Natasha Lyonne, with the 2010 comedy/slasher "All About Evil." Special topics for your consideration include: breaking news to us that you have all been aware of for like... 2 weeks, perfect homages, more questionable parenting and--good lord--the posters in this child's room, bejeweled flip phones, the true power move of smoking wherever the fuck you want, and a special message from our AI overlords. Our girl Natasha Lyonne also appeared in Episode 134- "#Horror" which is a movie that I remember almost nothing about. You can catch Cassandra Peterson in Episode 238- "Elvira: Mistress of the Dark," and while Jack Donner has appeared in a few of the "Puppet Master" films, he hasn't been in any of the ones we've covered (Episodes 164 and 165, which are 1 and 2, respectively. In 1954, Maila Nurmi shocked the world as sexy horror host Vampira on KABC. She rocketed to national, then worldwide stardom, then quickly faded ... although her character was a clear blueprint, much later, for Cassandra Peterson's "Elvira" character on TV and in the movies. Nurmi died in 2008. In 2010 Off-Ramp contributor R.H. Greene, who became friends with Nurmi in her later years, told her story for Off-Ramp in a documentary called "Vampira and Me." (The radio doc became a film in 2012.) Support for this podcast comes from Gordon and Dona Crawford, who believe that quality journalism makes Los Angeles a better place to live; and by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a private corporation funded by the American people.
Conrad and Dan are exposed to Elvira for the very first time in this Patreon's Choice episode, and watch with delight as the busty horror movie host scandalises the small, conservative town she visits in search of her past... and the money she needs to fund her Vegas debut. Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (1988) stars Cassandra Peterson as the irrepressible Elvira, E. Morgan Sheppard as her scheming great uncle Vinnie, Daniel Green as the naive town hunk, Bob, and Edie McClurg as the hilariously shrewish Chastity Pariah. It's the kind of comedy they don't make any more, but it that a sad or a good thing? Does Elvira work for a dumbfounded international audience? Find out! On this spooky season edition of Parallax Views, a previously unpublished and at one point thought-to-be-lost edition of Parallax Views! Sandra Niemi joins the show to discuss her book Glamour Ghoul: The Passions and Pain of the Real Vampire, Maila Nurmi. Sandra Niemi is the niece of Maila Nurmi, better known as the buxom TV horror Vampira! Maila Nurmi is perhaps most known for her iconic character Vampira, the sexy, sultry, and seductive 1950s horror movie host with an impossibly tiny waist. In addition to being a trailblazer amongst TV horror hosts, predating Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, and the hero of the Last Drive-In's Joe Bob Briggs by decades, Nurmi is also known her appearance in the Ed Wood cult classic Plan 9 from Outer Space. The woman behind the character, however, proves just as fascinating as Vampira herself. A lover of the bohemian lifestyle who rebelled against bourgeois values, Nurmi was also involved in the beatnik counterculture. And she rubbed elbows with such well-known Hollywood names as Orson Welles and Marlon Brando. Sandra will give an insight into who her aunt was and the legacy of Vampira. Among the topics covered: - How the character of Vampira came to be and the influences Nurmi drew from in creating the character - How Nurmi achieved the impossibly tiny waist that Vampira is forever known for - How Vampira became a huge hit in Los Angeles; the overt sexuality of the character; Vampira as a strong, empowered, liberated female character; how Vampira differed from the later Cassandra Peterson character Elvira, Mistress of the Dark - The sad story of Nurmi's relationship with Orson Welles - Knock-off Vampira characters that came about due to the success of The Vampira Show. - How she introduced the Vampira character to the LA-based ABC affiliate KABC-TV - The humble beginnings of Maila Nurmi and her childhood And much, much more!
