"Gilligan's Island" is a sitcom that aired on CBS from 1964-1967. The show follows the comedic adventures of seven castaways who become stranded on a deserted island after a tropical storm wrecks their boat, the S.S. Minnow. Much of the show's humor is driven from the contrast between the characters' personalities and their adaptation (or lack thereof) to island life. Although it was originally met with mixed reviews from critics, Gilligan's Island gained a massive fan following through syndication, becoming a pop culture icon. Its characters and theme song became instantly recognizable. Does this classic hold up or is this one better lost at sea? Listen as the S1E1 boys deep dive the show's pilot episode, "Two on a Raft". Starring: Bob Denver, Alan Hale Jr., Jim Backus, Natalie Schafer, Tina Louise, Russell Johnson, & Dawn Wells www.S1E1POD.com Instagram & X (Twitter): @S1E1POD

This episode was originally released on 6/1/2018. While new episodes of Breaking Walls are on hiatus I'll be going back and posting the older episodes beginning with this episode on the birth of radio. ___________ Question? What do starlets Marlene Dietrich, Kay Thompson, Margaret Sullivan, and Loretta Young have in common? How about writers and directors Norman Corwin, Helen Deutsch, and Bill Spier. How about Danny Kaye, Mel Allen, Gerald Mohr, Elliot Lewis, Byron Kane, Lurene Tuttle, Paula Winslowe, Joseph Kearns, and Arthur Q. Bryan? Answer: They guest-starred, grew, or launched their careers on CBS's Forecast! Forecast was a summer replacement series for the Lux Radio Theatre which ran for two seasons in 1940 and 1941. It ushered in an era of show pilots for public viewing and helped give rise to countless actors, writers, and directors, as well as two huge shows: Suspense & Duffy's Tavern. On Breaking Walls Episode 80, we present an in-depth look at Forecast featuring interviews, insights, and episode moments. Highlights: • Why would Forecast have come to the airwaves in the first place? • Hear CBS head William S. Paley's insights on programming • How Alfred Hitchcock helped launch the famed mystery show, Suspense • Bill Spier: Music critic, turned producer and director of mystery • How Elliott Lewis got his start on Forecast • Mel Allen & Duffy's Tavern: Where the Elite Meet To Eat • Norman Corwin's Two pieces for Forecast that helped catapult his career • How radio actor Byron Kane got his first role on Forecast • Jim Backus & the Class of 1941 * Hopalong Cassidy • The Country Lawyer: One of the most experimental radio broadcasts of its time • An all african-american jubilee to close Forecast The WallBreakers: http://thewallbreakers.com Subscribe to Breaking Walls everywhere you get your podcasts. DELICIOUS by Jim Backus and Friend (Jubilee, 1958)This lascivious one-off came to me via Dr. Demento, the famed broadcaster and collector of novelty records. The evocative cocktail music by Mort Garson and Buddy Kaye sets the salacious scene. I immediately recognized the familiar voice of the tipsy seducer as Jim Backus  (known for Mr. Magoo and Thurston Howell III). But, who was that sexy siren playing footsie with him? It was Kay Connell, who couldn't reveal her name on the record, as she was under contract at ABC-Paramount - so she remains deeply obscure, known to recorded history only as Jim's “friend”. Everyone loves to laugh; it's contagious. JIm and Kay's chortling is so infectious that it sparks spasms of glee in anyone who hears it. I dare you to try to listen to this record while resisting the effervescent bubbles of mirth that these two wobbly wantons are serving up.Jim Backus did some estimable dramatic acting, including as James Dean's dad in Rebel Without a Cause, but he hit comedy pay dirt with Magoo, and later on Gilligan's Island as the clueless millionaire. On this unique document, the actor demonstrates his powerfully persuasive comic gifts.

Welcome to episode 92 of Holly Jolly X'masu! In this special Christmas Podcasters Day episode, I talk about “Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol,” from 1962. I can't tell you how much I love this special. It's one of those things from when I was kid that has really stood the test of time. Jule Styne and Bob Merrill's music is a big reason for that, as are the performances of Jim Backus, Jack Cassidy and the rest of the cast. I was really only able to scratch the surface about the special and the people involved. If you'd like to learn more, do yourself a favor and get yourself a copy of Darrell Van Citters exceptional book, “Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol, The Making Of The First Animated Christmas Special.” Since this is Christmas Podcast Day, make sure to check out a few of the other podcasts out there. You can find us all at christmaspodcasts.com, but we'll also be posting links to each other's shoes throughout the day. Be sure to join me back here next month as I talk about the music of Japanese clarinetist Shoji Suzuki. Up first is the 1959 compilation, “X'mas All Star Jazz Parade.” After that, I'll be covering his 1963 album, “Merry Christmas.” Then join me on the 25th for “Swingin' Christmas” from 1961. It's one of the first Japanese Christmas albums I found online, and one that really got me hooked on finding more. All three are exceptional albums and you won't want to miss them. As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you'd like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know. Remember, I've added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you'd like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I've also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I'll be trying to add more. Half of any proceeds or donations received will be donated to support the people of Ukraine, while the rest will be used to purchase new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!

On Wednesday October 9th, 1957 at 8PM eastern time, The Bill Kemp Show took to the air over ABC. Bill Kemp was born on July 10th, 1921 in Toronto, Canada. An up and coming performer in the 1950s, his daily radio show ran weeknights at 8PM. His show was the final in a twelve-hour daily live broadcast project by ABC called “The Live and Lively Radio Network.” ABC's intention was to raise ratings by going back to live broadcasts in an era of taped shows. Interestingly, it was ABC that helped launch the non-Mutual Broadcasting transcribed primetime era with Bing Crosby's Philco Radio Time in 1946. Kemp's show featured an orchestra, vocalist and guest stars such as Jonathon Winters. Kemp's announcer George Ansbro remembered that Kemp once went laugh for laugh with Winters after a particularly successful broadcast, and continued the antics all the way to a nearby steakhouse. Unfortunately, Kemp also developed a debilitating drinking problem. Merv Griffin and Jim Backus were called on several occasions to cover for Kemp during absences for "personal reasons." One week after this broadcast on Wednesday October 16th, Queen Elizabeth II departed from Ottawa and arrived in Williamsburg, Virginia. The next day she was in Washington, D.C. While at the White House, Prince Philip received the gold medal of the National Geographic Society. On October 18th, two U.S. Navy balloonists flew to an altitude of sixteen miles, landing near Hermansville, Michigan. On October 19th, the Queen and Prince Philip attended an American football game in College Park, Maryland, and then visited a supermarket in West Hyattsville. That same day a beauty pageant winner was killed en route to her coronation in a helicopter crash in Farmingdale, New York, while Montreal Canadiens' star Maurice “The Rocket” Richard became the first player in National Hockey League history to score five-hundred career goals.

To wrap up Hallowe'en Month at When It Was Cool, let's look at some spooky 1970s Saturday morning TV shows. First, the original Ghostbusters from 1975. Spencer (Larry Storch), Tracy the Gorilla (Bob Burns) and Kong (Forrest Tucket) are bumbling detectives fighting vampires, monsters, ghosts and the like. There's a little bit of Borscht Belt comedy, some vaudeville humor and a lot of silly gags. Some famous character actors show up as bad guys like Ted Knight as a ghost, Bernie Kopell as Dr. Frankenstein and Jim Backus as Eric the Red. If you loved F-Troop, you'd probably enjoy Storch and Tucker here. Then, after the success of Scooby Doo for Hanna Barbera in the early 1970s, there were quite a number of mystery-solving teens with animal sidekicks and we spotlight a couple of them: The Funky Phantom and Goober and the Ghost Chasers. Kids, when we say popular culture was better in the old days, just point to some of these and say “Not so fast.”

Your Humble Host has something a little unusual today and an interesting bit of Magoo history. In this Library of Sound Volume 128 we present the best of the 1950's album "Mr. Magoo In Hi-Fi". An unusual album find that is mainly made up of music used in the Mr. Magoo theatrical cartoons of the late '40's and thru the '50's. While I didn't find the music at all interesting they DID have a selection on that album featuring the voices of Mr. Magoo (Jim Backus who later was Mr. Howell on Gilligan's Island) and Daws Butler (Huckleberry Hound and countless other cartoon characters) doing a comedy bit with their Hi-Fi system. It's a nice little bit here that from an album that ranks as one of my most obscure finds. Anyone who listens to my Sounds Like Radio shows knows I like background music from classic shows as I use it for my podcasts too but I'm afraid the music heard in the theatrical Magoo's was less than interesting and downright weird. So never fear, Your Humble Host is here to play you JUST the Mr. Magoo comedy bit from this odd album. If you're a Mr. Magoo fan you'll like it, if you're too young to know about Mr. Magoo enjoy it here and then seek out some Mr. Magoo cartoons. Mr. Magoo was an old guy who couldn't see well and would mistake objects in front of him for other things. I grew up watching the cartoon TV Mr. Magoo series which contained all new '60's Magoo toons. I liked those better than the '50's movie Magoos and would like to have an album of '60's Magoo cartoon music. But let's take a listen here to Jim Backus the real Mr. Magoo from an album rather in a toon.

The Girls do a deep dive off Gilligan's Island, with special guest and Gilligan Expert, Robbie-Ann's childhood bestie Karen. Karen talks about her all-things Tiki obsession, which evolved into a Gilligan's Island obsession. Robbie-Ann asks, and Karen answers, the tough questions: how did they get years out of that radio battery? Why didn't they build a boat? Where did they get all those wardrobe changes from just a three-hour tour (a threeee hour tour...)? Amy talks about her after-school joy watching Gilligan's Island, and her love for the vibrant colors on the show. Karen and Robbie-Ann reminisce about getting off the kindergarten bus at Karen's house and spending the afternoon on the Island. Amy reveals the shocking world tragedy event that occurred on the day the cast were filming the pilot episode, and how you can see a reference to it in the original opening sequence. Amy goes on to describe Sherwood Schwartz' origins of the show, as something of a political statement. Shocker: when Schwartz first conceived the series, the seven characters originally represented the Seven Deadly Sins. Can you identify who was which? The Girls discuss. Karen reveals her favorite episode, featuring the fictional Beatle-esque band the Mosquitos. The Girls dissect the Honey Bees' (Ginger, Mary Ann and Mrs. Howell) song "You Need Us." Naturally this leads to discussing the iconic tv Gilligan's Island theme song, and Karen reveals a crazy fact about the Wellingtons, who sang it. Amy reveals that the original pilot's Calypso theme song was co-written by none other than Star Wars, Jaws, Indiana Jones and E.T. composer John Williams. BUT - then Amy also reveals what Christmas classic was written by George Wyle, who co-wrote the historic "Just sit right back..." theme song that ended up in the show. Amy reports the five basic plot lines that covered almost all of the episodes. Gilligan's opera-radio reception in his teeth. The Dream Sequence episodes. Trivia: The Skipper's real name. The Professor's real name. Mrs. Howell's maiden name. Which cast member was the only one allowed by Sherwood Schwartz to improvise? The 1978  "Rescue from Gilligan's Island" tv movie. Casting Could-have-beens: could Jane Mansfield have been Ginger? Tina Louise, "method actor." The old Ginger vs. Mary Ann debate. Gilligan's first name: a controversy. Which Gilligan's Island stars ended up on Sherwood Schwartz' next sitcom, The Brady Bunch? Jim Backus' stellar acting pedigree. The show's enduring effect on its cast: typecasting. Which cast members embraced their roles after the show, and who didn't. Which cast member ended up being the only one still earning residuals decades later? The Gilligan's Island tie-in to the "Very Brady Sequel" movie. Sidebar: the 1990's Brady movies. "Gilligan's Planet?!!" "Aloha Paradise" - who remembers this show? The Gilligan's Island "warm fuzzy." Mary Ann's navel: snuck by the network standards and practices. The various island inventions: the car, the washing machine. Sidebar: Robbie-Ann and Karen talk about their kindergarten friendship, and the outfits they wore. Gilligan's Island shooting locations - where Seinfeld and Roseanne were also filmed. Who was the only Gilligan's Island star who did not guest star on The Love Boat? Sidebar: a discussion of their Gen X Childhood friendship. Robbie-Ann describes going to see Shaun Cassidy with Karen in 1978, and Amy wants to know what Karen and Robbie-Ann wore to the show. Who had better toys, Karen or Robbie-Ann? Robbie-Ann coveted Karen's Bionic Woman Dome House, her I Dream of Jeannie doll and bottle-house playset, and her Pet Ghost. Robbie-Ann describes the first day of kindergarten 40+ years ago, when she and Karen met. Karen and Robbie-Ann talk about kindergarten life in the 70s, and Robbie-Ann's bravery in the face of being told she couldn't play with the boy's better toys at recess. Final thoughts on the "warm fuzzy" of Gilligan's Island: there was no villain, no romance on the island, and Karen celebrates the real life friendship between Mary Ann, and Natalie Schafer.
