Somehow, Commander Sisko winds up in an accidental episode of Roots as we watch "Paradise"! In between all the torture and forced field labor, can Ben and Miles find a way to deprogram a cult? Meanwhile, we find out Dax is very casual about runabout safety standards.
Last week one of the great figures in the history of American sports passed away, leaving behind an incredible legacy that continues to affect us today. Willie Mays, the great baseball legend, oddly enough features in a small way in Star Trek: Deep Space 9. Commander Sisko is a massive fan of America's favorite pastime, and as a result, there is an entire episode of DS9 about Jake and Nog attempting to get a rare Willie Mays baseball card for Sisko. This is not the only reference to the aforementioned player on the show: Sisko's vision in the classic episode "Far Beyond the Stars" features Michael Dorn as a black baseball player from the 1950's named Willie Hawkins, a reference to the great Willie Mays. At last, your favorite Star Trek podcast arrives at the shady port of call you have all been waiting for as V'Ger Please enters the Deep Space Nine era! Come along with us as we review "Emissary" where Commander Sisko has the worst employee orientation ever, magic orbs are immediately handed out, and the most consequential space hole of all time comes into being.
JUST BROING OUT. A key episode in the development of Chief O'Brien and Dr. Bashir's friendship sees them trapped on an alien world trying to survive until Commander Sisko can rescue them. Joining Bryan to discuss this pivotal story is Clint Worthington, Editor-in-Chief of The Spool (https://thespool.net), a pop culture website focused on Film & TV. Back in 2021, Clint wrote "Queering the Bromance Between O'Brien and Bashir" for StarTrek.com which examines how their close bond, created in part by missions like this one, eventually creates a safe space for both men to express their feelings. This episode also features some Emmy-nominated hairstyles, a shell game, and a very questionable plot by the episode's antagonist. Is it a Trek, Marry, or Kill? The grades begin at (21:14). If you're enjoying the show, considering rating and reviewing us wherever you listen to the show.

DS9/TNG Crossover - Creating an EpisodeIn the late 90s, we had our first instance of two Star Trek television series airing at the same time. As "Star Trek: The Next Generation" began to end, "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" took its first few steps into the franchise. There were some small crossovers of major characters - with Dr. Bashir and Quark making small appearances with the Enterprise-D, and Picard and "a" Riker showing up on Deep Space Nine (not counting O'Brien and Worf's ultimate transfers to the station). What about a cross-over episode that made more use of our major characters? The trio transport themselves back in time in shaping what an epiosde of DS9 would look like with the appearance of some "major" TNG characters. Spoiler alert - the planned story goes slightly off the rails when it becomes clear that DS9 will be home to a cooking competition between Quark's new replicator and Commander Sisko's "home cooking", along with some familiar faces in the Trek franchise.Join us in this brand new cross-over adventure that never was! This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/3169638/advertisement

"Now hear this. Now hear this. On this week's episode of Kirking Off we get a look at the Battle of Wolf 359 and all of of the Starfleet ships that should have been decommissioned long before the battle. We also get to meet Commander Sisko who is tasked with administering Deep Space Nine while simultaneously preparing the Bajoran's for admittance into the Federation. Nathan and Dean dive deep into the Bajoran religion and Sisko's place within as the titular Emissary. Pondering questions this week: Is Quark the epitome of Star Trek? Is Odo one of the biggest fascists in the quadrant? Have the engineers of the 24th century listened to Dr. McCoy's warnings of exploding consoles and collapsing ceilings? And finally, is baseball the most apt metaphor for life? We present to you, Emissary, from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." “Blood Oath” and Trill obligations. A struggle with past lives is something all Trill must face. How much a joined Trill owes to past hosts is an ongoing question that is addressed from time to time in Deep Space Nine. In the second-season episode “Blood Oath,” Dax comes face to face with three old friends—the Klingon warriors Kor, Koloth, and Kang—and feels an obligation to uphold a promise made 80 years earlier. Only the person who must carry out the actions is not Curzon but rather Jadzia, and this puts her at odds with Commander Sisko and her duty as a Starfleet officer. In this episode of The Orb, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing explore “Blood Oath” and what it says about how joined Trill cope with memories that span multiple lifetimes. Does a Trill have an obligation to uphold promises made by past hosts? How much of the choice falls on the current host and how much on the symbiont? We also discuss the choice to bring back three of Kirk's most famous Klingon antagonists, as well as the original actors, and how DS9 pays homage to The Original Series. It's not just a contagious, telepathic energy field; it's a contagious, telepathic energy field that's good at improv. It puts the fiction in science fiction. No one is good at improv (except for Star Trek: The Improvised Generation). Odo lords his lack of frail, human feet over us, Kira makes a seduction attempt with martial law, and Commander Sisko buys a 3D printer. It's a good one, actually. Also, Dax would have been great in Odo's place here, but what about Kira? O'Brien? Bashir?! Odo was probably the best choice, but it's such a one versus many episode that it's fun to think about. In this one we're talking about the big, red analog button in every runabout, Klingon sartorial choices, and how effectively Commander Sisko can recap Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes. We also meet a new guy named...Farak or something. I don't think a tailor will be too important to our series going forward. I guess the lesson here is that there's no unity without change? That it's not worth owning your nation wholly if you've burnt it to the ground to get that? Maybe it's a dick move to hold the people you're trying to benefit hostage as part of your vigilante actions? It's episode 10! And half of it is all about dads, dads, dads~! In "The Nagus," Quark becomes Grand Nagus and navigates political intrigue and attempted assassination. Commander Sisko shares fatherly talks with other dads on the station, and Jake gets up to secrecy! Also: Is there more than just a surface-level connection between Maihar'du and Homn? Just how good is Sisko's aubergine stew? We can't answer these questions canonically, but we're starting to gather up questions for our Season 1 retrospective and Q-and-A episode! Commander Sisko “negotiates” a disupte between rival Bajoran nations and Chief O’Brien is reluctantly adopted as spiritual leader by a Bajoran village that annually follows the “Storyteller” to fight a demon of the town’s collective fears. In DS9 episode "Q-less"; Matt learns what Marvel movies feel like to non-comic book fans. Q, the inter-dimensional super-being, returns to the series along with Vash, and a host of other call backs to The Next Generation. Briar is unimpressed, and argues that Q a B-tier trickster god. Neither Q nor Sisko are taught humility, though Q might have learned to respect Commander Sisko. Also, The Ferengi are given room to breathe, and be fleshed out characters rather then one note villains. Finally the effects of Gravitons is questioned.
In DS9 episode "Babel;" O'Brien is run ragged. And thanks to a Cardassian device, a deadly virus sweeps the station that causes people to babble. An investigation into the pathogen reveals a twist: the sabotage was Bajoran in origin! Major Kira saves the day with petty-ness. Also, Commander Sisko standees.

This week, the RTW crew decided to postpone their episode about the series finale of DS9, and instead are taking a deep dive into the DS9 documentary. You’ll remember back in May of this year, Sam & Kevin had the privilege to see the film in theaters, but Jack was sadly unable to see it himself. Go back and listen to that episode for our larger discussion, featuring Jack listening on forlornly as Sam, Kevin, and Commander Sisko excitedly gush about the incredible film. But now that the crew owns the BluRay, they can finally get Jack’s hot take on Ira Steven Behr’s beard, and on all the things they neglected to mention to Jack. They’ll also be discussing the bonus features, and talking in some detail about all the deleted scenes, and, of course, taking detours to make obscure Simpsons references. It’s a good way for the RTW crew to get hyped up about our upcoming last regular RTW episode!!!! Coming soon! And don’t forget to rate and review us, tell your friends, and email us at reopeningthewormhole@gmail.com to hear your thoughts read on air!

In case you hadn’t heard… a new retrospective documentary was created by show runner Ira Steven Behr and was released for one night only in theaters. You’d better believe your boys at RTW caught it (or at least, two of them did…), as did returning champion guest, the mysteriously named Commander Sisko! Commander Sisko (no relation to Benjamin) sat down to talk with the guys at length about this loving and beautiful documentary about the show we’ve dedicated so many hours of our lives to discussing. If you haven’t seen the documentary yet yourself, go ahead and listen anyway! You’ll be in the same boat as one of the hosts, listening as the others recount the many insightful interviews, newly revealed secrets about characters, tantalizing behind-the-scenes gossip, and best of all, the top creative writing folks behind DS9 breaking and pitching a potential story for the first episode of season 8! Commander Sisko leads an educational camping trip in the Gamma Quadrant for Jake and Nog. Quark comes along just to make it super uncomfortable, but maybe he'll find some time to bond with Ben too - especially if it means cutting a deal for himself back on DS9. When a secret investment scheme by Quark's mother is laid bare, it makes everybody else in her family uncomfortable. But when a freighter captain visits DS9, it's apparent to everyone that Commander Sisko is looking to give her docking ring preferential treatment. What is dumb for a Ferengi? Do tomatoes have cores? Where's Leeta in all of this? It's the episode that's going to confuse a lot of people “who don't listen to both.”
When Cardassian scientists arrive on DS9 with a plan to communicate through the wormhole, it'll take more than a Bajoran with a picket sign to stop Commander Sisko's mission. But when prophecy turns into reality, O'Brien and the Cardassians must work past their differences in order to save the day. How many Peck's Bad Boy films are in the Marvel cinematic universe? In which quadrant is the bedroom? What is the half-life of embarrassment? It's the episode that doesn't blink. Ever.
When a freak transporter accident disappears Commander Sisko, Dr. Bashir and Dax, Chief O'brien is a little concerned. But when the away team appears at a critical time in the past, the death of a crucial historical figure has them scrambling to save the timeline. Is Brenner Information Systems a part of the Terminator movie universe? What's the street value of a clown costume? How do Ferengi eulogize each other? It's the episode that has a really cool tribal armband tattoo that we'd love to show you.

Li Nalas - famed Bajoran resitance leader - is alive! Sisko gives Major Kira the green light to head to Cardassia IV to retrieve him. The people are happy to have Li back. Maybe he can bring peace to Bajor. Not everyone is pleased with Kira's initiative, though. In no time, Li Nalas is named her replacement on DS9, and she is out of a job. Meanwhile, Bajoran isolationists are starting to make trouble for Commander Sisko and co. “Bajor for Bajorans! Also, DS9 for Bajorans! When Chief O'brien has his vacation plans derailed by the Cardassians, he goes from runabout seat to dentist's chair in short order. But after his lackluster accommodations on Cardassia Prime are relayed back to Commander Sisko, it's up to the crew of DS9 to get him rebooked elsewhere. Is there an “Alexander Bubble”? What are the three rules of Greatest Gen? Is Odo stuck in the uncanny valley? It's the episode that ignores the very spacious “back of a runabout”!
When Calvin Hudson walks Commander Sisko through his plan to leave the Federation, his fugitive turn has implications that will last well past laundry day. But when Gul Dukat rides shotgun for the mission to bring him to justice, Sisko's allegiances become complicated. What is the unified theory of non-Starfleet uniforms? Why are there so many farmers in Star Trek? Is there a question you should never ask a Lyft driver? It's the episode where all of the host's movements are motivated!
Things are tense on Deep Space Nine. Everyone is talking about choosing sides between Commander Sisko and Major Kira. Meanwhile, they are actually leading opposing sides! The only ones acting normal are Odo and Quark. Could all of this weirdness have to do with that Klingon who beamed aboard right after blowing up his ship and right before dying? Did THAT have to do with the psychic orbs his crew was researching? How will this play out? Hang on to the heaviest piece of cargo you can find! We are putting Dramatis Personae in the Mission Log. In this weeks episode, we talk about the first episode of Star Trek Deep Space Nine, "Emissary". We debate the vast change in tone of this iteration of the series, as well as giving our thoughts on this new adventure aboard a previously-Cardassian occupied space station.
When an alien race that REALLY doesn't like Shake Weights decides to liquidate their gym, Dr. Bashir and Chief O'Brien are there to help. But when those in charge want to change the scope of the project, it's up to Commander Sisko to take a break from his buffet long enough to investigate the matter. Who are the “Geordi & Data of DS9”? What is Colm Meaney's “Con Face”? Why is there so much implied gluttony? It's the episode that shares the hosts' favorite Judith B. Raskin park bench quotes.
Good news listeners! We had such a great time talking with Dan and Commander Sisko about The Darkness and the Light that the conversation went on for an ungodly length of time. As a result, a lot of fun conversation had to be cut for pacing and other reasons. But we decided that there is a lot of fun tangents and peaks behind the curtain that our listeners might enjoy here, so we are releasing these outtakes as a raw, unedited, mini-sized (for us) bonus episode! There's minimal Trek talk (although there may be some), but there is a lot of nerds having fun and goofing off, so if that's your bag.... give it a whirl!
In this heavy episode - both thematically, and regarding the weight of a very pregnant Kira - members of the Shakaar resistance cell are systematically killed by a madman. Joining us to talk about this tense hour of television is the RTW superfan & critical emailer known only as Commander Sisko, as well as returning champion Dan Carrigan! The guys will get into myriad discussions about moral shades of grey, WWII, Junior (starring Arnold Schwarzenegger), and everything in between. On a scale of one to five, you'll be saying, "THAT'S FIVE".

Time's End" episode from Star Trek(edited from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, season 1, episodes 1 & 2)https://mwge.org/For this third session of the “Awakening from the Dream” with Spanish translation, David Hoffmeister and Jason Warwick show a “mini-movie” version of a profound Star Trek episode that illustrates the undoing of the belief in linear time! Read the movie summary below to learn more about the episode and the ideas discussed in this commentary, which relate it to the teachings of A Course in Miracles! If you want to watch this episode, subscribe to mwge.org at the Master Pop level and then search in Movies for “Star Trek Deep Space Nine Emissary”.Recorded January 20, 2018 at the Living Miracles Metaphysical Center in Kamas, Utah.Movie Summary (from MWGE.org):Commander Sisko, the main character in this masterful Star Trek episode, starts off with a grievance against Captain Picard. In the previous episode, Captain Picard's mind and body had been taken over and absorbed by another race. He had then ordered an attack on Sisko's ship in which Sisko's wife, Jennifer, was killed. In this episode Picard has returned to his mind and to his job as overall commander of the Starfleet. Sisko comes to Picard to receive an important new assignment, but he is clearly angry at Picard. He is holding a grievance. Grievances go beyond the person, beyond the specific personal memory. We have a memory problem. The mind recalls the past; it wants something of the past, of time and space, to be real. As long as it wants something in time and space to be real, it calls forth scenarios. The mind continues bringing up the past relentlessly. The ego tries to deny and repress the negative ones, and to hold on to and keep the positive ones. Only when you finally integrate them and see that they are all the same, do you have a real breakthrough, a real healing. The race of people that Sisko is sent to help have a glowing green orb that symbolizes the Light. The Light uses various characters to show Sisko that it's impossible to put any value on something that is absolutely valueless. It lets him experience scenes from the past until he realizes that none of them had any reality. Thus he is able to forgive and release them. All of linear time, this entire cosmos, is just a dream of hypotheticals that have no meaning. We could say you exist in all of them. To heal, repressed memories have to be brought up to the light and seen for the nothingness that they are. You can then transfer this realization of nothingness to any grievance and see it totally transformed. The only real opportunity in linear time is to wake up to your eternal nature which is perfect abstract Love and Eternal light.https://mwge.org/
When Kai Opaka makes an unscheduled visit to DS9, Commander Sisko, Major Kira and Dr. Bashir take her off the station as soon as possible. But when their Winnebago crashes onto “Planet War,” one of them will be unable to leave. Do humans in the 24th century have super eyesight? Does the promenade have a Claire's? What's the greatest amount of emotion depicted in Star Trek? It's the episode that's grandfathered into immortality.
To wrap up season one, DS9 looks all the way back to Emissary! After the Bajoran religious leader Vedek Winn discovers that Keiko O'Brien is teaching secular values to her students, the entire Federation-Bajoran relationship looks like it may crumble. Commander Sisko is hesitant to push his values on anyone, but he may need to take a stand before people end up dead. In the Hands of the Prophets finishes the first season of DS9 and moves us into the second season with an examination of the dark side of the Bajoran religious movement. Clay joins me to discuss meeting new characters, O'Brien's temper, and the confused ethics of Roddenberry's universe. Are you looking for older episodes? Star Trek: Deep Space Nine got a strong request to shake things up in the fourth season, so hey, what better way to do that than to make the Klingons go nuts, in “The Way of the Warrior”? Side benefit: we get Michael Dorn as Worf! Plus! Is that a side benefit? iTunes Google Play RSS

“The Maquis, Part II” isn’t a completely successful episode of Star Trek, but it is an important step towards Star Trek: Deep Space Nine coming into it’s own. With political tensions heating up on Bajor, a beliguered Commander Sisko does his best to deal with the removal of Major Kira from her post at DS9, while Kira herself has to deal with feelings of uselessness in her new liason position on the planet. Luckily Vedak Berial is there to "comfort her" in ways only a hunky man of faith can. Plus we get the return of Louise Fletcher as the sardonic Vedak Winn who secretly has backed Minister Jaro in his attempts to take control of the government. But are Jaro's intentions just, or is he a puppet of the Cardassians? You'll only be able to find out after you download the show and take some time...to LISTEN TO THE PROPHETS.Feedback for this show can be sent to: listentotheprophets@gmail.comListen to the Prophets is a proud member of the Two True Freaks! In a wonderful bit of synergy (read that "he demanded he be included on the show"), Gene "Gene the Podcasting Machine" Hendricks joins Producer Paul Spataro, Awesome Andy Leyland, and Satisfactory Shawn Engel for the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode...The Forsaken. When some rather obnoxious Starfleet dignitaries visit the station, Commander Sisko rightly assigns them to be tended to by Dr. Bashir, but even the good doctor can't control the lustful passions of Lwaxanna Troi, who gets all tingly in her lady bits for the resident shapeshifter, Constable Odo. But does the inclusion of the mother of Next Generation's most derided counselor into a Deep Space Nine episode drag the show down? You might be surprised to hear what we have to say. So grab your listening device of choice, download the show, and take some time...to LISTEN TO THE PROPHETS.Feedback for this show can be sent to: listentotheprophets@gmail.comListen to the Prophets is a proud member of the Two True Freaks! Do you think that STAR TREK DEEP SPACE NINE is the red-headed step-child in the Star Trek franchise? Do you think that Commander Sisko 'ain't all that as a Captain? And what's the point of a Star Trek show, if they don't go anywhere, right? I mean it's right there in the title! Well, Shawn Engel, Paul Spataro and Andrew Leyland have banded together across time frames to calmly and rationally explain why they don't agree with any of these points and that the show most maligned in fandom may actually be it's fair haired child. In this inaugural runabout, our three Klingon Warriors watch the double length series premier, EMISSARY.
