WELCOME HOME, RO? Michelle Forbes returns to Star Trek: The Next Generation just before the series finale and 30 years later Bryan finally understands just exactly how tragic this episode's ending is, resonating all the way until Star Trek: Picard's "Imposters." Joining him to sift through 30 years' worth of opinion about Captain Picard is actor-producer Samantha Gregory, who has co-founded a women-led production company Sam Hill Productions (samhillproductions.com and sam__hill__productions on social) and who has played Ro Laren before in a Star Trek fan film. The grades begin at (20:55).
There's to say about this phase of life. I mean, you get to watch people exercise, you get to push a nasty Romulan out of a ship, and ruin your own Dixieland funeral party. What's not to love? Ro Laren and Geordi Laforge get lost in the transporter beam while helping a Romulan science ship that's had a horrible accident in space. The Enterprise thinks the pair are dead, but they wake up, talk to each other and eventually figure it's all about mixing clocking devices with a phase invertor. The Klingon special does a number on the digestion (if they can eat while phased.) But forget all that. This episode is about death. Or Life. One of those, definitely. It's funny and good. Ensign Ro! Well, Wesley's gone, and we need a new spunky low-ranking character that's constantly accused of committing war crimes. Why not Ro Laren? This episode contains: Welcome to the Ben Lawless podcast. Lawless: The Ben Story. Y'all seen the movie Lawless? Ben hasn't yet. Was it good? Devon's not here tonight, because of... dinner? With his wife? We still would love a tour of the Mighty Coconut offices. They're doing great work. Steven pitches a series of Walkabout Minigolf courses to Mighty Coconut. Wouldn't you love to play minigolf through the backlots for scifi movies? We pitch minigolf courses based on alien invasions and Buck Rogers. Did you know that Mighty Coconut made Pigeon: Impossible? Which Spies in Disguise is based on? What if there was a minigolf course based on Pigeon: Impossible? Steven is pivoting from podcasts to putting, and pigeons. Ben needs a vacation from his vacation, amirite? Ben's son wanted to watch Speed Racer 2. Ben's heart broke to tell him the truth. Emile Hirsch wants to do another Speed Racer movie! Get the Wachowski's onboard. http://screenrant.com/emile-hirsch-speed-racer-return-hopes-response/ Ben is SO STOKED about the Apple TV+ Speed Racer show helmed by J.J. Abrams. Let's make the Speed Racer Extended Universe a thing. Today in the Weird Wide Web: Chrome will support WebGPU! What the hell does that mean? WebGL is cool and all, but WebGPU is going to revolutionize graphics on the web. Remember how Apple told Adobe "No Thank You" about putting Flash on iPhone? Ben does. Steven wonders why the name Mozilla sounds so familiar... Hint: he uses Firefox. Sometime in May, WebGPU is coming to Chrome! Ben is so excited. Ben is telling you: Arc is the best web browser ever. Steven and Ben argue whether Bing is a browser. Ben has worked in web development for the last 14 years. Feels like 40. Ben called it years ago: Microsoft finally stopped making their own browser engine. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/04/chrome-113-will-enable-webgpu-a-modern-low-overhead-graphics-api-for-the-web/ Symphony of Scent: Making sense of scents: Deciphering our sense of smell. Remember the five senses? They're cool, right? What is smell? When do things start and stop smelling? Steven wonders. Scientists have created the first 3D picture of how an odor molecule activates an odorant receptor. "We need to see it so we can science it!" - Steven. Smells are somehow like hitting keys on a piano to produce a chord. Devon could explain it. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2023/03/230315132416.htm Science Fiction: The Big Door Prize on Apple TV+ is really good. Is it scifi? Ben thinks so. If you were in The Big Door Prize, would you want to hear your "life potential?" Getting big Tales from the Loop vibes from The Big Door Prize. Are there similarities between The Big Door Prize and Machine of Death? Steven really enjoyed the ending of Shrinking on Apple TV+. The Bad Batch's third season will be its final. We finally talk about Star Wars Celebration this episode. THREE NEW STAR WARS MOVIES?!?!?! WHAT?!?!?! The Filoni film is going to wrap up the Mandoverse? Hate that term btw. So... Grogu trained with Luke for 2 years?! We are digging the trailer for Star Wars Visions Season 2. The claymation looks incredible. Ben finally watched the first Hotel Transylvania. Cool flick! We spoil Star Trek: Picard's 3x09 Vōx because you have to spoil it to talk about it. Now we know why Ro Laren didn't use the transporters! Pre-pod Patreon-only: Ben monologued about sleep for 49 minutes.

Tony and Laurie talk about an official-but-unofficial update on the status of Strange New Worlds season 3 and speculate about what else Paramount+ may be about to announce. They discuss Seth MacFarlane’s comment about being “cautiously optimistic” for an Orville renewal and have some good news for fans of Eaglemoss Hero Collector ships going back on sale. Pivoting to Picard, they take a look at recent posts and comments from Michelle Forbes and Terry Matalas about bringing Ro Laren back in last week’s show, then dive into their review of episode 6, “The Bounty,” where they relished all the reunions, especially from LeVar Burton and Brent Spiner, who make their first appearances of the season, and try to put together where all the story points are headed next. They wrap up with a fun moment courtesy of the German Defense Minister's TNG ringtone, and Laurie plays us off with a tune from Brent Spiner's album Ol' Yellow Eyes is Back featuring backup vocals from his TNG costars.

Happy Friday and welcome to another episode of SFP- NOW's ongoing reviews show. In this episode, Ian & Marx give their initial thoughts on the new CW series Gotham, which is a show set in a universe where Batman has been killed. Our initial thoughts are that the show is kind of meh and has room for improvement. So tune in to hear exactly what we have to say. Moving on. We also give our first thoughts on School Spirits and focus on the show's pilot episode 'My So-Called Death', which introduces us to the tone and characters of the series. In this discussion, Marx compares this show to 'Dead Like Me' only with less sarcasm. Staying on the theme of supernatural series. We also discuss Wolf Pack and zoom in on the penultimate episode titled 'Lion's Breath' which has a few big plot reveals when it comes to Ramsay and her true nature. We also discuss how gorgeous the show's cinematography is when it comes to one shot in particular. Moving into the realm of science fiction and fantasy. We discuss the new season of The Mandalorian and recap events from 'The Mines of Mandalore' and 'The Convert'. We also briefly discuss a few shows from Star Wars past as well as touch on the infamous Holiday Special via a discussion about a new documentary film about that. So set your lightsabers to maim as many Ewoks were sacrificed to make this episode. We close out this month's show with a recap of Star Trek: Picard's fifth episode 'Imposters', which not only saw the return of Ro Laren from TNG. But also used her character as a means to link the A and B plots together as more is revealed about The Changeling Plot to undermine Starfleet and The Federation. We also speculate somewhat as to where this could go and discuss how Paramount Plus could use this season of Picard as a Springboard for other series that could reintroduce characters from TNG, DS9 & Voyager as well as continue the adventures of some of the new characters such as Captain Shaw and Ensign Sydney LaForge. So please tune in for another packed reviews episode and feel free to comment about any of the shows we cover or even suggest shows and movies you'd like us to discuss. If you enjoyed our reviews show. Then please consider subscribing to our Feeds on Spotify and iTunes.

The quality of Star Trek: Picard is holding on this season. There are more conspiracy theories that go right to the top. Jack Crusher turns into John Wick. And A.Ron would like the record to reflect that he called the appearance of Ro Laren. Utopia doesn't exist in this iteration of Star Trek, but at least this season is decent despite some odd dialogue. Beam your feedback to picard@baldmove.com. Hey there!

I'm here with Joie from The Jump and Shoot podcast. We're watching the last episode of Ro Laren with you all. Ro has grown a lot and now she's learning about her own culture during a mission to infiltrate the Maquis. Journey's End has been a long time in coming. It feels like the beginning of the end of the series and it's also an episode I recorded with this guest host almost two years ago. That said, there are a few things I'd like to get off of my chest: Picard does not have Native American heritage. Ro Laren was 8 episodes of TNG and a prominent character in 6 of those episodes. Cardassians had neck frills in their original appearance. The Native Americans from The Original Series episode, "The Paradise Syndrome," were from Earth, not a parallel culture. Romulans have never been remotely "up front." I hope you like two white guys talking about Native American culture for 45 minutes. It was neck and neck whether we could be marginally more enlightened than Star Trek and I think we pulled ahead just a little bit. #198 In this episode of Trek TV we discuss Star Trek: The Next Generation S05E03 - "Ensign Ro". Hosted by Tracy and Vaughn. Guest starring Derek & Jared.. Listeners! Are you tired of your boring, by-the-book, too-perfect starship crew? Then why not try the all-new, extra-abrasive, highly anti-social Ro Laren?! Straight from the stockade, this feisty disgraced officer comes complete* with sorrowful and checkered past, clip-on earring, and a chip on her shoulder to rival Worf's bandolier (it's actually a "baldric" apparently, but bandolier is more fun to say)! Act now, and we'll throw in thrilling (and possibly poorly-informed) discussions about the definition of terrorism, the tragic plight of the displaced and/or occupied Bajoran people, the latest in brothel-furniture-based fashion trends, unbelievably gullible Admirals, undeniably insane childhood worshipping of pig-shaped lawn ornaments, and so much more! This deal is so good, it nearly rendered Tracy temporarily blind! She's fine now. So call your favorite podcast provider and tell them you want your very own "Ensign Ro" for just five easy payments of completely free... in the form of this latest episode of Trek TV! *Bra not included Visit our website for fan art, news and more!
Ro in Voyager - Ro Laren captured the hearts of many fans in her few appearances in The Next Generation. There was the attempt to get her into Deep Space Nine, but the actress moved on in her television career. However - what is we managed to get Ro back for "Star Trek: Voyager"? As viewers know, we last saw her with the Maquis. The trio imagines what if she joined Chakotay's crew and got stranded in the Delta Quadrant ... what role would she play on the Intrepid-class vessel? We talk about Ro's role with the crew, her position on the ship, and which rank pips she would wear. Would Voyager have been even better with a battle-hardened Bajoran? Join us as we explore Ro Laren in "Voyager."

Ro on DS9. Many Star Trek fans have heard the story that Michelle Forbes was originally approached to star in "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,' reprising her character of Ro Laren. Whether it's true, we are glad that Nana Visitor/Kira Nerys got to play the station's first officer for seven seasons. But what would that alternative show look like, with Ro as a main character from the very first episode? What role would she have with Sisko, Starfleet, and her fellow Bajorans? And what would Kira's role be, if Ro is already there? Would they get along? What romance (if any) would Ro have during the seven seasons of DS9? The trio dreams up this alternative version of "Deep Space Nine," with a dynamic Ro character. Are you glad she didn't show up? Or would she have made the show even better? Let us know!

Rascals Commentary. On its face, the plot of the seventh episode of The Next Generation's sixth season sounds ridiculous: Captain Picard, Ensign Ro, Guinan, and Keiko O'Brien are turned into children and must re-take control of the Enterprise-D from the Ferengi. However, this fun-filled episode remains a fan favorite (though it also has its detractors). Daniel, Darren, and Phillip provide commentary for this episode, complimenting the outstanding work of the children actors portraying our TNG characters. From the Ro Laren sub-plot of her tragic childhood to Jean-Luc's struggle with losing command to Alexander Rozhenko & friends helping to defeat the surprisingly evil Ferengi, this episode features many takeaways. Daniel also reveals why this episode is the pinpoint for Chief O'Brien leaving the Federation's flagship for Deep Space Nine. So re-learn to brush your hair, get your boys/girls-sized Starfleet uniform and become a "Number One" fan with this commentary of "Rascals."
