On this episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, we see the first introduction of the Cardassians to Star Trek canon, as Captain Picard tries to maintain the delicate ceasefire between the Cardassians and the Fedaration after a rogue Starfleet Captain who happened to be Chief O'Brien's commanding officer during the war, begins attacking Cardassian ships. For the first time, an alien comes from the other side of the wormhole. He has ship trouble and seems very reluctant to accept any help. Chief O'Brien quickly finds out he has a secret.
We conclude our "Section 31" coverage with a look at Star Trek: Deep Space Nine "Extreme Measures". As Odo suffers from a seemingly incurable disease, Doctor Bashir seems to think Odo's ailment was the doing of Section 31. Join in as we get inside the head of Sloan, as Julian and O'Brien team up for one last romp.
Batten the hatches and hold fast this week as we try to survive "Starship Down"!New York Times bestselling author David Mack returns to the show to discuss one of two DS9 episodes he co-wrote with writing partner John J. Ordover. The Defiant is attacked by Jem'Hadar warships while on a trade mission and is critically disabled. Now, Chief O'Brien and a crew of enlisted men must keep the ship afloat in the atmosphere of a deadly gas giant . . . all while Sisko lies close to death, Bashir and Dax are trapped below decks, Quark and Farmer Hoggett have to disarm a torpedo, and the Jem'Hadar are still out there! In the TNG/DS9/VOY days of Trek, many freelancers and young writers tried selling scripts to Paramount and they made them attractive by presenting brisk, money-saving "bottle show" concepts. This is NOT one of those scripts. Starship Down starts with a bang and continues with a series of bangs, exposing the crew to mortal peril and forcing our heroes to confront their inadequacies in order to save the day. During our discussion, we talk about the process of writing for Trek and for the small screen, how Dave met John and how they honed their process, the episode's roots in "Das Boot", creating enlisted character and following them into the Pocket novels, giving Sisko a "Kirk" moment, teaching Worf how to lead, doing it all over again only bloodier in "Wildfire", and how Dave got the nickname "The Angel of Death!"Dave also shares some anecdotes about his time working on Trek TV, the benefit of lunch networking, burning your old drafts, wanting liquid metal but getting gas, writing Tyler in and out, working in Jesus's carpentry shop, Disco season 2 running Mack's Greatest Hits, whether Star Trek: Picard will torpedo the Trek lit universe, what it takes to defeat Section 31, and the lost "Cheers" Quark episode!Murder, blackmail, war crimes . . . fun!Pre-order David's new TNG novel, Collateral Damage, available October 8th!https://amzn.to/2LEGGaSTalk about shift changes with us on Facebook and Twitter and our Facebook group!http://www.facebook.com/eistpodhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/eistpod/http://www.twitter.com/eistpodBuy us dud torpedoes on Patreon!http://www.patreon.com/eistpodSubscribe to the show on iTunes!https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/enterprising-individuals/id1113165661?mt=2

In this weeks episode, we talk about the first episode of Star Trek Deep Space Nine, "Emissary". We debate the vast change in tone of this iteration of the series, as well as giving our thoughts on this new adventure aboard a previously-Cardassian occupied space station.
"The Wounded" In the season four The Next Generation episode "The Wounded," we're introduced to the Cardassians, a species that has until recently been at war with the Federation and which will become very important in Deep Space Nine. Captain Benjamin Maxwell of the Phoenix has ordered his ship to carry out attacks inside Cardassian space and the Enterprise-D, along with Cardassian military observers on board the ship, pursue the Phoenix. We also learn more about Chief O'Brien's background and his involvement in the Cardassian War as he tries to deal with what he went through during a traumatic time. In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Richard Marquez, Amy Nelson, and Justin Oser discuss the powerful and important episode "The Wounded." We talk about our thoughts on the look of the Cardassian ships, uniforms, and the Cardassians themselves, O'Brien's struggle with his feelings toward a former enemy, and whether Maxwell is more motivated by exposing what the Cardassians are doing or by what happened to his family. We also discuss the theme of racism in the episode and what we learn about Picard's history and his diplomatic skills. Catch a whiff of bureaucracy this week as Star Trek: The Next Generation takes its first real stab at serious drama for the classic episode, "The Wounded"! Author Jeffrey Lang joins the show this week for a look at Trek's spin on Heart of Darkness, as Chief O'Brien must face the ghosts of his past and stop Captain Maxwell, his former captain, before Maxwell can add to the list of casualties. It's an deep examination of complex social issues, telling yourself you're the good guy, finding humanity in the enemy, and living through what you've already survived. But, we still make room to talk kelp buds vs. lamb stew, Cardassian hipsters, Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose, Chief O'Brien At Work, and scary Trek monsters!Plus, Jeff talks about his collaboration with Martok actor J.G. Lieutenant Carey Character Analysis. Recurring character Lieutenant Joe Carey may have met an untimely demise in the seventh-season Voyager episode "Friendship One," just missing the ride back home to the Alpha Quadrant in "Endgame." But the mild-mannered Starfleet engineer, with hair ever-so-slightly reminiscent of Chief O'Brien's, made a big impression on Voyagerfans, despite appearing in relatively few episodes of Voyager. Viel Spass!

Starfleet Career Path, Part 2.The Next Generation, and the other 24th Century Star Trek series, can sometimes be inconsistent with how they show a career path in Starfleet. Phillip, Daniel, and Darren finish their focus on the "colors" of careers by looking at the gold shirts of the Enterprise-D and Enterprise-E: the engineering/operations and security officers. They go from the rank of ensign to the upper ranks, examining life as a yellow shirt on the flagship - as well as the need to create more colors to better describe one's job.Earl Grey also focuses on the crewmen who do the real work on the ship, to include the very important transport chiefs (other than Chief O'Brien). Chief O'Brien.Husband. Father. Soldier. Bored transporter chief. He goes by many titles, but Chief Miles Edward O'Brien made an impression on Next Generation viewers from the first moment he piloted the stardrive section of the new flagship in "Encounter at Fairpoint." Even though Miles changed from red to gold (and changed ranks even more often!), this secondary character was a vital part of the Enterprise-D crew. Daniel, Darren, and Phillip lay out a character profile that follows Miles from his wedding to Keiko, to the birth of his first child Molly, and all the way until his last moment in Transporter Room 3, before he disembarked on a seven-year adventure on Deep Space Nine.Join Earl Grey as they go through Chief O'Brien's many episodes, analyzing his "every man" role, his unique role as a Starfleet non-commissioned officer, and how his reactions to "boldly going where no one has gone before" made the series even stronger. Rascals Commentary. On its face, the plot of the seventh episode of The Next Generation's sixth season sounds ridiculous: Captain Picard, Ensign Ro, Guinan, and Keiko O'Brien are turned into children and must re-take control of the Enterprise-D from the Ferengi. However, this fun-filled episode remains a fan favorite (though it also has its detractors). Daniel, Darren, and Phillip provide commentary for this episode, complimenting the outstanding work of the children actors portraying our TNG characters. From the Ro Laren sub-plot of her tragic childhood to Jean-Luc's struggle with losing command to Alexander Rozhenko & friends helping to defeat the surprisingly evil Ferengi, this episode features many takeaways. Daniel also reveals why this episode is the pinpoint for Chief O'Brien leaving the Federation's flagship for Deep Space Nine. Well, if you take out the argument over Klingon boob windows, it's non-controversial. Luckily most of the episode is dedicated to coverage of the first season episode "Captive Pursuit" which has Chief O'Brien meeting up with a fugitive alien from the Gamma Quadrant (who, coincidentally does NOT try and kill anyone with a forklift) who is being hunted by some proto-Jem'Hadar. Welcome to episode #4 of Pants at Somewhere Gravity: A Flat Nostril Lunch...I mean, Listen to the Prophets: A Deep Space Nine Podcast. Sorry, I must have been suffering from aphasia, much like the crew of DS9 were on this episode entitled "Babel". After trying to fix all the problems on the station, Chief O'Brien decides to focus on fixing the food replicators so Sisko will get off his @$$ about how his coffee tastes. Unfortunately, the Chief's repairs activate a hidden device that puts a virus in the food which causes those who eat from it to start talking in gibberish (much like Shawn when he hasn't had enough sleep), and it's up to Major Kira and a Bajoran doctor named after a cartoon chihuahua to find the cure. Plus Paul, Andy, and Shawn discuss how the concerns over a viral outbreak mirror what is happening in the U.S.A. right now. How prescient is that? Well you'll just have to find out when you download the show and take some time...to Listen to the Prophets.Feedback for this show can be sent to: listentotheprophets@gmail.comListen to the Prophets is a proud member of the Two True Freaks! Punished for a crime he did not commit, Chief O'Brien has the memory of multiple decades of incarceration in just a few moments in the real word. Now, he must learn to readapt to his normal life, even though to him, he's been gone for decades. Poor O'Brien. This is what you get for being the affable everyman on the cast.
