The kids are on the prowl and this ain't no Space Camp situation! An accident puts a unique combination of characters into crisis mode as Ensign Ro, Keiko O'Brien, Captain Picard and Guinan all turn twelve to seven years old. Guinan and Ro learn to love jumping on beds while Keiko can't console Miles or her daughter. Picard's young self doesn't get the respect he deserves either, and the Ferengi take advantage of the Enterprise. Ever since our beloved Wesley Crusher left the show, we've had a slew of random "Ensigns Of The Week" driving the ship, each only ever having one line. Well, those days are (kinda) over! We now have a new character who will be semi-permanently taking over the spot every now and then, for like a season-and-a-half. Geez, when I put it like that, I guess it really isn't all that exciting. Well, let's see if there's anything to celebrate in this character introduction episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Episode discussion starts at 18:34. This is episode 9/15 in our look at The TNG Glory Years. Hosted by Jaron Hatch, Aaron Cole, & Salem Rogers. Main Actors in Other Trek RolesWe all know and love the Trek phenom that is Jeffrey Combs. His many notable Trek roles have led fans to think he may be playing them in everyday life! What is even more noticable about actors who play multiple roles is when it is someone who plays a "main character." A recent "Lower Decks" reminded fans about the Nick Locarno/Tom Paris double-billing. The trio looks at the "main" actors in Trek who have played multiple roles. Remember seeing Ensign Ro before we saw her? Did you know Tim Russ can be seen a few times in the franchise before joining the Voyager bridge? And what about those actors who played "guest roles" after their main series ended?Join us as we see double (or triple) in actor appearances, including a continuing argument about how to count appearances in TNG's "Shades of Gray".This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/3169638/advertisement
Disaster Strikes! We remember Picard hates kids, but then loves them. We remember Dr. Crusher knows how to hold on to stuff when being sucked into vortexes. We remember Worf is excellent at midwifery. We remember Data is an android who knows how to keep his head screwed on straight. We also remember Chief O'Brien kicks ass and Ensign Ro is a badass/killer. But who knew Counselor Troi was a Commander? We sure didn't! We meet a new friend and crewmember! Ensign Ro originates the Bajoran people who will come to be a huge ass part of the Star Trek canon. Michelle Forbes returns, having been the daughter in "Half a Life" and knocks Ro's dangerousness and fierceness right out of the park. We learn the Bajorans are a proud people who are down on their luck and that Ro has got some crosses to bear. Luckily, Guinan comes in to guide Picard to trust Ro against the Cardassians, and then she gets a job on the Enterprise. Done and done! Jimmie; His pants wet. A classic sci-fi premise with a fantastic performance from one of Star Trek's most storied captains (if by storied, you mean twice died to save the white Captain.) Picard is beamed to surface of a planet with the Tamarian captain who only speaks in idiomatic references to myth. The universal translator doesn't jibe with space metaphors. But by uniting their confusion as one, Picard and the Tamarian overcome a phase beast and their frustration to learn one another's tongue. It's a wonderful episode for which our panel and the Trek community at large has an everlasting fondness. Temba, his arms wide! Ensign Ro! Well, Wesley's gone, and we need a new spunky low-ranking character that's constantly accused of committing war crimes. Why not Ro Laren? We're talking TNG's The Next Phase while waiting for the oscars to start! We chose The Next Phase because Geodi La Forge plays a central role in it and also Ensign Ro... cause you know, gay. #198 In this episode of Trek TV we discuss Star Trek: The Next Generation S05E03 - "Ensign Ro". Hosted by Tracy and Vaughn. Guest starring Derek & Jared.. Listeners! Are you tired of your boring, by-the-book, too-perfect starship crew? Then why not try the all-new, extra-abrasive, highly anti-social Ro Laren?! Straight from the stockade, this feisty disgraced officer comes complete* with sorrowful and checkered past, clip-on earring, and a chip on her shoulder to rival Worf's bandolier (it's actually a "baldric" apparently, but bandolier is more fun to say)! Act now, and we'll throw in thrilling (and possibly poorly-informed) discussions about the definition of terrorism, the tragic plight of the displaced and/or occupied Bajoran people, the latest in brothel-furniture-based fashion trends, unbelievably gullible Admirals, undeniably insane childhood worshipping of pig-shaped lawn ornaments, and so much more! This deal is so good, it nearly rendered Tracy temporarily blind! She's fine now. It's Pride Month! To celebrate, we're going to be chatting each week about how Star Trek affected us as members of the LGBTQIA+ community. This week, we do a bit of an intro, and talk about how Star Trek made us feel about being gay; we then move onto this week's underappreciated TNG episode, Ensign Ro. We meet the Bajora (we'll add an "n" on the end later for DS9) for the first time and we take a detour to briefly talk about Badmirals. Johnson, meanwhile, is apparently on uppers and interrupts Mike incessantly. Shocked? We're not! We would love to hear from you! 7.
This time on Star Trek: The Next Generation we get the return of the Cardassians, the introduction of the Bajorans along with a new recurring character for the Enterprise crew--it's Ensign Ro!!! First aired October 7, 1991.
Bolians. The blue glue that holds Starfleet together. Some are service providers, some are officers, and a few even get lines. And yet there's a ton of lore about these Federation members. Siskoid plays one in a role-playing game, and he's invited his GameMaster Ryan Blake back on the show to help dissect the people of Bolarus IX, their biology, culture, and impact on the TNG era. A little late is better than never. Here's our watch of Ensign Ro. Brent debated for a long time whether or not to include this, but in the end, it felt like a disservice to not introduce Matt to this character. Matt and Andy return to good old fashioned TNG. Chief O'Brien and Ensign Ro also came along for the ride. We also wrap up Picard discussions in the hails. So if you don't want that spoiled, skip from 10:00 to 39:30. Otherwise enjoy the ride. Episode discussion begins at 39:30
Star Trek TNG S5E03 Ensign Ro
I'm amazed that Picard's stupid jacket didn't immediately torpedo this sensitive diplomatic mission. But I'm glad we got Ro out of all of this. And Deep Space Nine. I didn't realize how the Iran/Iraq War and the Soviet/Afghan war ran almost contemporaneously for almost the entirety of the 80's. Lockerbie was in '88 and I was way off with the Beirut barracks bombing happening in '83, almost eight years before this episode. Still though, what could this series could have done with its main characters to make them more interesting, even if they were a bit more flawed? And I don't mean flawed as in 'poorly written.' I mean flawed in a way that made them more nuanced characters. Give Doctor Crusher a hat?

Captain Picard, Ensign Ro, Guinan, and Keiko O’Brien are regressed physiologically to age 12 by a transporter accident, but retain their adult memories, resulting in different reactions from each. Andy is back! Matt's there too. And it really seems like everyone on the Enterprise has an attitude problem. Also Andy is very excited to have Ro Laren at the helm. Episode discussion probably begins around 33:00 (I'm just guessing cause I'm a new dad and my brain is mush)
It's all about helping foes on TNG this week. First up, what do you do when you get your hands on a lone drone in "I, Borg"? After that: a Romulan experiment goes awry leading to La Forge and Ensign Ro being out of synch with the universe in "The Next Phase". Also this week: we sure are doing a show; how many things can we compare the Borg to; phased state doesn't make a ton of sense. Timestamps: synopses: 2:19; I, Borg: 11:45; The Next Phase: 44:32
It's all kinds of new friends this week on SSHB! First up, the "Enterprise" crew tries to make proper first contact with the heretofore-incomprehensible Tamarians in "Darmok", and things get a bit dangerous when Picard's counterpart decides to force the issue. After that, we meet a new crewmember in the form of the disgraced and titual "Ensign Ro", a Bajoran with a (frankly understandable) chip on her shoulder. Also this week: "Darmok" v. "Midnight", Yar v. Ro, Disney v. your wallet. Also also: some DS9 chatter this week, but spoiler-free. Timestamps: synopses: 1:13; Darmok: 13:53; Ensign Ro: 38:35
Oops, got my episode numbers wrong in the titles. This is the actual Episode 273, which kicks off the fifth season of Star Trek: The Next Generation, with "Redemption II," "Darmok," and "Ensign Ro." Uh oh, these are all all-time classics! Temba, his arms wide!

This week we celebrate Star Trek: The Next Generation’s 25th anniversary by discussing Ensign Ro. She is the final woman we will cover from TNG. FictionalFemales.com
Michael Piller, Part 1. One of the most important contributors to the Star Trek franchise, Michael Piller was the showrunner for The Next Generation from seasons three to five and many credit him with helping to improve the overall quality of the show after a rocky first two seasons. During that period, Piller is probably most famous for writing "The Best of Both Worlds" two-parter, a hugely influential set of episodes that took the show's popularity to new heights. Michael Piller was also a co-creator of Deep Space Nine and Voyager and the showrunner for each of those shows during their first two seasons. Piller capped off his career with Star Trek by co-writing "Insurrection" and sadly passed away from cancer in November 2005. In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Amy Nelson, Richard Marquez, and Justin Oser start a two-part series on Next Generation episodes and movies written by Michael Piller. The episodes discussed are "Evolution," "Booby Trap," "The Enemy," "The Best of Both Worlds," "First Contact," and "Ensign Ro." Ensign Ro. Ensign Ro Laren was introduced in season 5 of The Next Generation and was a recurring role until the end of the series. She came on in part to replace Wesley Crusher at the conn station, but also to be at odds with the main characters. Her character definitely pushed the envelope with each of the main characters and she proves to be an irreplaceable character. In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Richard Marquez and Amy Nelson with special guest Justin Oser discuss Ensign Ro's character and personality within the Enterprise-D. We highlight each episode she appears in and how she interacts with the crew. By looking at the span of episodes over a three year period, we recognize her character's growth and development and how she adds a richness to the series. In this week's ball-conscripting episode, Magnus finds himself in a bit of a Star Trek mood. And Ro Laren is kind of hot in that bad girl type of way. So why not shoot the bull about the Next Gen episode Ensign Ro? What worked about this show? What was kind of a fail? Wouldn't answering those questions here defeat the purpose of listening to this episode? Still, this Next Gen episode is significant for adding some much-need dissent in the ranks. Seriously, how many Next Gen episodes feature a guest star that literally everybody on the Enterprise openly hates? Very few. But Ensign Ro is one of them. Due to the blitzkrieg of badassitude this week, unfortunately there's just no time for listener feedback this week. But don't cry about it, some is coming in the future! So dry your eyes! Use the time wisely! This would be an opportune time to send in any feedback you may have as the vault could get totally cleared out of feedback in the relatively near future. So get to writing! In the meantime, though, don't let the lack of feedback this time get you down! You can still offer your feeble effort at tribute! You humble serfs are always welcome to kiss your benevolent leader's ring. Corrupt DiManzocorp interns are ready, willing, able and eager to accept your bribe to present your meager missives to your wise emperor. The email address to use is trentusmagnus@gmail.com as the other seems to be having technical problems. In an another sublime act of truly unprecedented charity, your emperor permits you lowly rabble to suggest topics for a future episode. Thus, petitions may be sent to trentusmagnus@gmail.com for DiManzocorp interns to review, whereupon your leader might consider thinking about the possibility of potentially discussing whatever you have in mind some day. And that's a promise!

When a Previa containing Captain Picard, Ensign Ro, Guinan (and some other minor character) are transformed from the proud adults we've come to know into children, it becomes a great time for an enemy to hijack the Entrepreneur. Unfortunately, these hijackers are NOT smarter than a 5th grader. What is the worst ring tone? Why doesn't young Picard have an inner monologue? What's the market like for a used Galaxy Class starship? It's the episode that's working in shifts.
Picard is shorter and has more hair than usual. In fact, he's a 12 year old kid, and so are Keiko, Guinan and Ensign Ro. Are they still themselves even after a physical transformation? The Road to Deep Space Nine. By the time The Next Generation entered its fifth season, the series was enjoying such amazing success and popularity that the studio decided it was time for a third dip into the Star Trek well, and Deep Space Nine went into production in 1992. But what would this new show be about? Which characters would carry over? What species would be highlighted and developed further? The answers would come from specific episodes of The Next Generation. In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Lee Hutchison, Richard Marquez, and Amy Nelson look at the beginnings of Deep Space Nine through the lens of The Next Generation. We discuss how TNG set up Sisko’s introduction with “The Best of Both Worlds,” as well as how the Romulans and Bajorans were portrayed in “The Wounded,” “Ensign Ro,” and “Chain of Command.” This initial setup allowed for an incredible arc to be fleshed out more fully on DS9. Religion in TNG. The classic topics that are considered impolite to discuss with company are money, religion, and politics. Since Earl Grey already did an episode about money ("EG 58: Scarcity, Scarcity, Scarcity"), it is now time for them to discuss religion. Most fans know that Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry was an atheist who believed that humans would "outgrow" religion by the 23rd and 24th centuries. The Next Generation features a diverse crew who do not seem to display any beliefs that one would characterize as "religious." Phillip, Daniel, and Darren nevertheless examine Lieutenant Worf's Klingon culturalism and his battles with faith ("Rightful Heir"), Lt. Cmdr Data's search for self-actualization with his "creator" ("Brothers"), and Capt. Picard's role as a leader of a crew with various religious/non-religion beliefs. The trio also examines the "guest star" aliens' religious beliefs, from Ensign Ro's "cultural Bajora-ism," the conflict in "Who Watches the Watchers?", to the enduring Native American spiritualism in "Journey's End,"; from Ardra's role as the Devil ("Devil's Due"), to the role of "doctrine" in "The Outcast." Join Earl Grey for a discussion about the nature of religion and personal beliefs in The Next Generation. Romulans, being out of phase, not thinking too hard about science, close talkers, and Ensign Ro are just a few of the topics covered in this episode. Next on Random Trek… another surprise! Host Scott McNulty with Justin Michael.
Rascals Commentary. On its face, the plot of the seventh episode of The Next Generation's sixth season sounds ridiculous: Captain Picard, Ensign Ro, Guinan, and Keiko O'Brien are turned into children and must re-take control of the Enterprise-D from the Ferengi. However, this fun-filled episode remains a fan favorite (though it also has its detractors). Daniel, Darren, and Phillip provide commentary for this episode, complimenting the outstanding work of the children actors portraying our TNG characters. From the Ro Laren sub-plot of her tragic childhood to Jean-Luc's struggle with losing command to Alexander Rozhenko & friends helping to defeat the surprisingly evil Ferengi, this episode features many takeaways. Daniel also reveals why this episode is the pinpoint for Chief O'Brien leaving the Federation's flagship for Deep Space Nine. So re-learn to brush your hair, get your boys/girls-sized Starfleet uniform and become a "Number One" fan with this commentary of "Rascals." Ageing in TNG.The writers of The Next Generation, despite being mostly young men, crafted several stories that tackle the nature of growing older. Phillip, Darren, and Daniel analyze how the movies and television episodes treat the issue of ageing in the 24th century. The inaugural TNG film, Star Trek: Generations, features Captain James T. Kirk dealing with life transitions (and death), Captain Jean-Luc Picard struggling with issues of family and mortality, and the antagonist Dr. Tolian Soran sacrificing entire planets to kill the "predator" of time. The third film, Star Trek: Insurrection, is centrally focused on the idea of a "fountain of youth," and theEnterprise-E crew, as well as the Son'a and Baku, react to "growing younger" in different ways. The Earl Grey trio also examine such episodes as "Half a Life" and "Relics" which pose questions about the treatment of older people in society. There are also the story-lines in "Rascals" that deal with "lost youth," with both Ensign Ro and Picard struggling with the consequences of a second childhood. Along with "Too Short a Season," this episode talks about bad "old age" make-up, being considered middle age on alien planets, and how certain scripts could have been improved. Season Five Overview. The Next Generation peaked during its fifth season, featuring its highest viewer ratings and the long-anticipated return of a main cast member from the originalStar Trek. The season begins by completing the Klingon and Romulan-focused two-parter "Redemption," and then covers new ground with a metaphor-speaking alien species ("Darmok"), the introduction of a new featured character ("Ensign Ro"), and a multi-story episode in "Disaster." Fans of both Star Trek generations finally received their wish with the return of Spock to the television screen in the two-parter "Unification." This was unfortunately the same year that Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry died. However his legacy lived on in season five as it sought new perspectives on established TNG characters with the returns of Lwaxana Troi ("Cost of Living"), Wesley Crusher ("The Game" and "First Duty"), and the Borg ("I, Borg"). Captain Jean-Luc Picard was faced with one of his greatest challenges in the critically acclaimed "The Inner Light," while the season ended with fan-debated episode "Time's Arrow, Part 1." Join Daniel Proulx, Darren Moser, and Phillip Gilfus as they put on their brand new captain's jackets and examine the fifth season of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Some of the smooth polished edges have been worn down in the four years the Enterprise-D has been traveling the stars, but “Ensign Ro” gives us a titular character with a checkered past and a dislike of all our regular characters. Another guest star has a checkered past in “Silicon Avatar” and it’s a giant space-faring crystal. ...

Ensign Ro Commentary. During TNG's fifth season the decision was made to shake up the show with the introduction of a new character. Ensign Ro Laren was a feisty Bajoran who would become an important part of the crew and someone we'd get to know for the next couple of years. In fact, she almost ended up on Deep Space Nine. In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Phillip Gilfus, Darren Moser, and Daniel Proulx provide their first commentary track as they take you through her namesake episode, "Ensign Ro." Along the way we discuss the introduction of the Bajorans, their conflict with the Cardassians, badmirals, the lack of blue shirts on TNG, Guinan, and how we feel about Ro as a character.
