Welcome to our new series, “The Beat Goes On,” where we will celebrate the work and enduring influence of Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, and the other writers whom we identify as “The Beats.” - that crop of artists who worked to expand our consciousness, exploring the hidden possibilities of post WW2 America in the 1950s - Other significant names to be explored: Diane Di Prima, Tuli Kupferberg, Ed Sanders, Delmore Schwarz, Anne Waldman, Carolyn Cassidy, and many others. We will also include jazz musicians like Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Dizzy Gillespie, whose sinuous Bebop lines influenced the expansive prose of Kerouac and poetry of Ginsberg, and comedians like Lenny Bruce, Lord Buckley, Brother Theodore and Dick Gregory with their scathing critique and unmasking of our nation's hypocrisy beneath the self-deceptive rhetoric of American exceptionalism. And, then there are their artistic children like Hunter S. Thompson, Charles Bukowski, Tom Waits and Lou Reed…. The list goes on.First off: we need to define that confusing term “beat”… Once the satirists were able to pin them down, the Beats and their devotees were labelled “Beatniks” (a cold war epithet) and put into a farcical box. This is where I, as a child, first became aware of them through the character of Maynard G. Krebs on the Dobie Gillis show. The child-like, pre-hippie with the dirty sweatshirt and goatee, indelibly played by Bob Denver, later of Gilligan fame. He was a gentle figure of fun, not to be taken seriously. But, the truth goes so much deeper. Kerouac defined Beat as short for “beatitude” - a state of grace, a codex for the maturing “peace and love” Baby Boom generation coming up - those in search of existence's deeper meaning beyond the consumerist and war-like American culture being offered as our only option.Well, boy, do we need them now! HENRY MILLER INTERVIEWOur inaugural offering is a 1964 interview with the writer Henry Miller, of TROPIC OF CANCER, TROPIC OF CAPRICORN, and THE ROSY CRUCIFIXION TRILOGY fame, among many others. This is an insightful, in depth look at a artist of gargantuan influence. Miller was interviewed by Audrey June Wood in Minneapolis during a speaking tour; he considered this interview to be one of his best. Miller discourses on some of his favorite books and authors and the struggle of writing well. It was released on Smithsonian/ Folkways Records.Strictly speaking, Miller was not a Beat - he preceded them, and out lived many of them, making it to 88 in 1980, but he was their spiritual and artistic pathfinder.Living hand to mouth, on the edge, abroad in Paris, writing free form in a raw, explicit, semi-autobiographical manner, telling the truth about sex, love, art, and struggle - he set the artistic compass for the Beats - as Dostoevsky and Walt Whitman had done before him. They are all part of a chain - a chain of searchers, and we are fortunate to have these lights to guide us on our own personal journeys to self realization. Please enjoy…THE BEAT GOES ON.

Maybe you won't recognize the name Mary Travers, but if after you hear the songs she recorded with her trio I'm sure it will your ears will get perky. Peter, Paul, and Mary had six top 10 hits on the Billboard charts from 1962 to 1970. The three hitmakers shared a manager with Bob Dylan and recorded his song “Don't Think Twice, It's All Right.” They broke up shortly after their biggest hit “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” written by Bob Denver. Peter, Paul, and Mary reunited for some tours in 1978 and were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999.

Welcome back to 50Talk. This week Cathy opens the show. How special is that? We are happy to be back this week. We have a lot to talk about because we have been doing a lot. I love Cathy's (scripted) opening, she said " Hopefully we can give you some valuable information and spark some conversation" . We would love to continue any conversation we have with you guys. We know that sometime ya'll be yelling at us on the other end and just want to keep the debate going. We understand that. Just send us an email and we can continue the conversation. Hell, we could even get you on the show to finish things or just agree to disagree. We're cool either way. That's what we're for. We went to Louisville, Kentucky last week and had a blast. We loved the city and we look forward to going back again real soon. We even got our son Max to join us and even try some of the great bourbon Kentucky has to offer. We had some good food and even had a chance to go to a Cigar Bar across the river into Indiana. We had a really good time on the trip. I do have a pet-peeve though! I hate when I search for a good restaurant and they display their food in styrofoam containers or on paper plates. I know most of the picture are probably during Covid. I get that, but Covid is "over" now so get rid of them. It annoys the hell out of me. The restaurants we went to luckily did use paper products, thank goodness. We had some really good southern food while we were there. That's why I love going South, I like to eat. In Ohio we had a "Special Election" a couple Tuesdays ago. They meaning our Republican House tried to trick the Voters, thinking we weren't paying attention and we proved them wrong. We had more people vote that the last Presidential Election it said. Issue 1 went down in flames. Thank you Ohio for putting a smile on my face again when it comes to voting. Lets go quickly to Mississippi and talk about this "Special Police Unit" that calls themselves the Goon Squad. Well they got to stand in front of a judge and plead guilty to torturing two black men for two hours and shooting one of them in the mouth. These police and there Police Chief need to be in jail. This is 2023 and things like this shouldn't be going on, but sadly they are and hopefully we have a positive outcome from this case. That outcome being jail for these criminals. Global warming is a real thing and it is showing us this summer with this crazy weather. Cathy says that we have no control of the weather once it's out there. No one has control when you look at it. We all need to be conscientious of what we're doing when it come to polluting the air. The earth is on fire and we need to get it under control. Out West they were having temps in the 100's for a month straight and in Ohio we are barely having a summer. Finally we talk about the "Legend" John Denver or is it Bob Denver and all of hit musical hits. Does he belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of fame? We had this discussion off air last week and Cathy was cracking up! We hope you enjoy the show and Please join us again next week for another fun filled show . Email us at victor50talk@gmail.com if you want to continue the conversation. Also welcome any of our Family to the show. We hope you enjoy and aren't offended by the adult conversation.

The co-hosts of this podcast are split on the work of Pauly Shore. With that said, we can both agree that the 1993 film Son in Law which had Pauley Shore as the lead is indeed funny. Shore's character 'Crawl' has a redeeming quality and a knack for growing on you. The same sentiment can be felt as wins over his college friend Rebecca's family. A definite "fish out of water" tale that does bring the funny. Even in Pauly Shore's unique way, it does work here. Dreama is best known as the wife of Bob Denver, you know, Gilligan, the loveable character from the series, “Gilligan's Island.” She is an actress in her own right on stage and screen, an author, and the owner of a radio station with a delightful name, “Little Buddy Radio.” Dreama lived 30 wonderful years with the love of her life, Bob, before he passed away in 2005. Yet, her story is far from a fairytale life. Their son, Colin, was born with severe autism. Bob and Dreama made the decision to walk away from Hollywood to raise their son. Then, after 20 years of caring for Colin, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, Bob was diagnosed with cancer. In those difficult months, Dreama suffered a stress induced heart attack. Years later, she fought a battle with breast cancer. But the best part of her story is the ongoing epilogue of her life, the last seven years have been especially amazing since the Holy Spirit reached out and touched her life in a miraculous way. Listen as Dreama tells her story.
Robert Osbourne Denver graduated from college with a degree in political science, then caoched physical education and even taught math and history at a California elementary school. But today, this well-educated, smart, soft-spoken man is best remembered for this... Gilligan's Island. Gilligan's Island only lasted three seasons in the mid-1960s, but thaks to reruns and syndication the show has effectively never been off the air since. And, like so many other popular TV actors, Bob Denver found himself typecast.

This week we have a loaded edition of It Was a Thing on TV for you. We have it all from Herman Munster to Michael J. Fox to Bob Denver to Nolan Ryan to a dancing robot. First, Around Halloween 2012, a pilot to a rebooted version of The Munsters aired. If you were expecting campy humor that worked in the 1960s, you're solely mistaken. Mockingbird Lane was a very dark comedy which was not your Munsters from 50 years ago. Then, NBC's young stars came out to shine in this NBC TV movie, which also acted as a reunion of sorts for two other much older TV shows. It was had star power, it was funny, it had too many plots, and most importantly, it has a connection to our pilot month. Stay tuned...(Note this is best enjoyed while watching the movie on YouTube, starting at about the 74:55 mark in the drop. We give about an hour of commentary while watching the movie.) Finally, May 1st marked the anniversary of Nolan Ryan's final no-hitter for the Texas Rangers. On that night for some odd reason the game wasn't carried locally in the Dallas-Fort Worth market, however the local NBC station in Dallas thought it would be a good idea to carry the 9th inning live on-air to start the 10 O'Clock News. Enjoy as we listen in on this strange simulcast and explain the strange story as to why this occurred which wasn't revealed until recently. From July 2017: Dawn Wells talks to Ed, Tony, and Donna about how much of the appeal of Gilligan's Island stems from the casting of the actors who played the seven castaways, and particularly the Laurel and Hardy-like comic timing of Bob Denver and Alan Hale.
