The NY-Times ALMOST Admits the Truth About Teen Mental Health Episode 1,237

A doctor wrote an article for The New York Times stating that "this is not the way to help depressed teenagers." Her name is Dr. Darby Saxbe. She almost gets to the truth but can't. The article talks about social-emotional learning. Dr. Saxbe isn't aware of why it's a failure, but she does admit it is a dismal failure. She also admits that the classroom programs are failures, and, in fact, kids who go through specific mental health classes in school get worse, and kids who skip them get better. Through the article, Dr. Saxbe can't seem to get to the exact reason that all this is going on. In her argument, she states that these programs put too much focus on self… but then she calls for more programs. She says that these programs can get kids to think that everything needs a label…but then she provides more labels. We go through this piece and compare it to the Word of God. I began to research God's Word on this topic, and as I did, the Lord absolutely convicted me.What does God's Word say? John 16:3333 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”Ephesians 5:6-216 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore do not be partakers with them; 8 for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light 9 (for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth), 10 trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them; 12 for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. 13 But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light. 14 For this reason it says,“Awake, sleeper,And arise from the dead,And Christ will shine on you.”15 Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, 16 making the most of your time, because the days are evil. 17 So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; 20 always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father; 21 and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.Proverbs 29:17“Discipline your children, and they will give you peace; they will bring you the delights you desire.”Psalm 78:1-7“My people, hear my teaching; listen to the words of my mouth. I will open my mouth with a parable; I will utter hidden things, things from of old—things we have heard and known, things our ancestors have told us. We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done. He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our ancestors to teach their children, so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands.”Episode 1,237 Links:New lawsuit alleges Pfizer 'knowingly distributed' unsafe drugs to children; Texas AG says he is "horrified by the dishonesty we uncovered.""Tranhausen By Proxy?" There's hard work and there's things that are just meant to be: Bent Paddle Brewing Company is a good mix of both. One of Duluth's most popular breweries (and that's an understatement!), the spot came to be thanks to the hard work of four co-founders who came together in a way that can only be described as destiny. One of those four founders is Laura Mullen, the Vice President of Outreach and Marketing for Bent Paddle. A beer lover prior to opening the brewery, she recounts the amazing road to opening Bent Paddle, how the cofounders settled on a Duluth location and her cool connection to the industry from the very beginning. Crack a cold one and listen to the history of Bent Paddle, a true Duluth beacon.

Interview! Laura Mullen, SPORE Program Director at San Francisco SPCA “Ringworm is nothing worth dying for.” Laura Mullen has worked in the shelter medicine department at the San Francisco SPCA for 15 years. Her current project is the SPORE Program, or Shelters Preventing Outbreaks of Ringworm through Eductation.   Ringworm is a pesky fungal infection that lives on the keratin in animal hair and nails—one could call it “cathlete’s foot!” Though it’s not a life threatening condition, it can wreak havoc on animal shelters, especially those without proper resources for treating and preventing it. Backed by the Maddie’s Fund, SPORE seeks to provide those resources through treatment and prevention education and research initiatives. SFSPCA takes in known ringworm animals from other municipal shelters and screens them using in-house cultures to determine the level of infection and, subsequently, the level of treatment required for eradicating the problem. SFSPCA then teaches those shelters best practices for quarantining and monitoring animals exposed to ringworm, as well as proper preventative measures against recurrent outbreaks.   To learn more about SPORE or the 3-day SPORE apprenticeship offered later this summer, please email Laura Mullen at lmullen@sfspca.org.
