Send us a text4 Flexibility Options Schools Need NOW to Retain Great TeachersIn this week's episode, I share something deeply personal that has been on my mind since I left the classroom full-time two years ago. The truth? I never stopped loving teaching or my students - I simply needed more flexibility than traditional school structures could offer. The Flexibility Crisis in EducationLet's be honest - teaching has become an all-or-nothing profession. You're either in the classroom full-time or completely out of education. This inflexible system is driving away talented educators who love teaching but need options that accommodate:Young children at homeAging parents requiring carePersonal health needsWork-life balanceIn this episode, I explore four potential solutions that could enable teachers to remain in the profession while enjoying more flexibility in their schedules. They include:1. Reimagined SabbaticalsNot just unpaid leave, but structured breaks (6 months to a year) with:Partial pay possibilitiesGuaranteed retention of tenureMaintained healthcare benefitsReturn-to-position guarantees2. Expanded Job SharesAllow two excellent teachers to split one full-time position:Flexible scheduling optionsMaintained benefits (critical improvement needed)Reduced burnoutPreserved institutional knowledgeCollaborative teaching partnershipsLess disruption for students3. Reduced Load ContractsCommon in higher education but rarely available in K-12:Teach fewer classes/sectionsPerfect for experienced educatorsOpportunity to bring back retired teachers as mentorsReduce burnout while maintaining connections4. Administrative Support SystemsAddress the number one complaint: "I love teaching - it's all the OTHER stuff that wears me out"Dedicated admin support for paperworkHelp with data entry, reporting, emailsGrade management assistanceParent communication supportReduced mental load for teachersBonus Idea: Professional "Break" BankCreate systems where teachers can donate time to colleagues needing mental health breaks - not just for physical illness.Remember: Flexible options aren't a sign of weakness - they're infrastructure for longevity a Want to truly thrive in teaching without sacrificing your personal life? This old school educational trick could change your classroom… Our hosts Devin Siebold and James Yon are meeting in the dojo on this week's episode of Crying In My Car, a podcast for teachers. In a world so focused on grades and tangible achievements, we often forget to ask what's best for education? This week they are going to go over odd classroom tendencies that teachers claim are absolute game changers for education. Now we all know that education is hyper focused on subjects like math and science, but do you think that it would be more beneficial to focus on encouraging creativity to shape their young minds? Today our hosts are going to be discussing the pros and cons of sending your kids to a specialized art school and how it can impact their overall education. Speaking of alternative ways of teaching, we got news of one teacher who decided it was a good idea to teach karate in their classroom. Now we don't want to give away too much, but the results were interesting to say the least. Not only does it teach valuable skills, but it also helps release their built-up energy (and maybe some frustration, too). Finally, have we strayed too far from tradition? Far gone are the days of using pen and paper and looking at physical report cards. With the rise of technology, are students and parents losing valuable skills, or is technology innovating education? A Fine Balance: a podcast that explores how to find a work-life balance that works for you
In this episode, self-employed gardener Joe Roukin, otherwise known as Mr Plant Whisperer, joins me for a candid conversation about his experience as a married dad of two who is the primary carer in his family. Joe shares his unique perspective on how to strike the right balance between staying organised and ‘going with the flow', while tackling work-life pressures with a problem-solving mindset. He opens up about the role that patience plays in his pursuit of balance, and the effectiveness of sometimes "biting your tongue" to avoid conflict, especially when juggling career pursuits and family life. For someone who spends the majority of his working time outdoors, Joe and I discuss the impact that connecting with nature has on his sense of balance, and how the physical side of his job creates opportunities for him to reflect deeply on all aspects of his life – and how this enhances his sense of balance. For Joe, a former graphic designer turned teacher, being creative is the common denominator of his work and home-life ambitions. On this, Joe shares some practical advice for other creatives in pursuit of their balance. Joe's approach to working fatherhood is refreshingly authentic and pragmatic, and throughout our conversation we explore the notion of partners in a marriage supporting one another to achieve their desired goals, and a balance that works for each one individually. Tune in on Spotify, Apple or wherever you usually get your podcasts, for an inspiring and uplifting conversation, which covers:

Did learning management systems make teaching easier during the pandemic? Surprisingly, our study found that teachers using these systems, like Canvas and Schoology, reported higher levels of burnout, rather than relief. Instead of replacing old tasks, these platforms often added extra work, requiring teachers to submit lesson plans in both paper and digital formats. To truly support educators, schools must ensure that new technologies streamline workloads rather than increase them.

This week I chat with Gabe Dannenbring about the challenges of modern-day education. From managing work-life balance post-pandemic to evolving classroom dynamics, we explore how teachers and students alike are navigating an ever-changing landscape. Gabe shares his perspective as a middle school teacher, while I bring insights from the university level. Together, we reflect on the impact of the shifting attitudes toward education, homework debates, and what it takes to keep both students and teachers engaged. Tune in for an enlightening conversation on teacher burnout, student resilience, and the delicate balance between structure and innovation in the classroom. Takeaways: The Shift in Student Attitudes: Post-pandemic students exhibit a different approach to work-life balance, focusing more on mental health and less on pushing through discomfort. Homework Debate: Some parents, like the TikTok mom mentioned, are pushing back on excessive homework for young children, raising questions about the balance between school expectations and student well-being. Classroom Management Challenges: Teachers today are dealing with increasingly chatty, distracted students, but there's a need to push through discomfort and maintain structure. Teacher Burnout is Real: A recent Wall Street Journal study shows that teacher satisfaction has dropped dramatically, with only 42% of teachers feeling that their job is worth the stress. The Importance of Doing Hard Things: Andrea and Gabe both highlight the value of resilience and persistence in both teaching and learning, emphasizing the growth that comes from pushing through challenges. — Want to Learn more about Gabe Dannenbring? In this powerful episode, we sit down with Kelsey Sorenson, a teacher, homeschool mama, certified life coach and author, to dive deep into the issue of teacher burnout. With educators leaving the profession at an alarming rate, we explore what's driving this exodus and how teachers can protect their well-being.A recent Gallup panel shared that 44% of teachers said they are “always” or “almost always” burned out, outpacing all other professions. Perhaps a more shocking statistic than this is most teachers are surprised this statistic isn't higher!Kelsey shares everything she has learned about teacher burnout and how to stop ourselves getting to that place before it actually happens. And here's a hint… it starts with self-compassion and curiosity.Throughout this conversation we talk about:The burnout crisis in educationFactors contributing to the current burnout epidemic Common patterns in burned-out teachersHow to become an observerSelf-advocacy for teachersWe need more of Kelsey's message in the world for teachers. It is time to educate and rejuvenate ourselves to start to reverse the trend of teachers burning out. If you know a teacher that is going through any of the things we talked about in this episode, please share it with them - we need to keep our amazing teachers in classrooms.
