You probably all know the Black Square, a famous avant-garde painting that has radically changed the way we think about art. You've probably heard that this painting was created by Kazymyr Malevych, a “Russian painter”. But he was not Russian. He comes from Polish and Ukrainian descent, and the Ukrainian sources of his creativity and thinking are huge. In this episode, we will try to explain why it is important to look at Malevych as a Ukrainian artist. Our guest is Tetyana Filevska, a Ukrainian art historian, the creative director of the Ukrainian Institute, the country's major cultural diplomacy institution. She is interviewed by Tetyana Ogarkova, a Ukrainian literary scholar and journalist, an expert at the Ukraine Crisis Media Centre, and a lecturer at Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. "Explaining Ukraine" is a podcast by UkraineWorld, a multilingual media outlet focused on Ukraine. UkraineWorld is run by Internews Ukraine, one of Ukraine's largest media NGOs. You can support our work at patreon.com/ukraineworld. Your support is crucial as our media increasingly relies on crowdfunding. You can also support our volunteer trips to the front-line areas, where we provide assistance to both soldiers and civilians - mainly by bringing cars for soldiers and books for civilians. You can support our trips via PayPal at ukraine.resisting@gmail.com. This episode is made in partnership with Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and the Heritage Ukraine project supported by the European Union's Erasmus programme.

When Kasimir's Malevich's Black Square was produced in 1915, no one had ever seen anything like it before. And yet it does have precedents. In fact, over the previous five hundred years, several painters, writers, philosophers, scientists, and censors alighted on the form of the black square or rectangle, as if for the first time. Foreshadowed: Malevich's "Black Square" and Its Precursors (Reaktion Books, 2022) explores the resonances between Malevich's Black Square and its precursors, revealing layers of meaning that are often overlooked but which are as relevant today as ever. Their conversation ranges from how Andrew chose the overall structure for the book and his process of researching it, to why Malevich's canvas should be seen as one of the most interesting and beautiful paintings ever made. Back in February 2015, we discussed the history of 19th century French political satire in response to the tragedy of the mass shooting at the offices of the satirical publication Charlie Hebdo. In the wake of the insurrection at the Capitol in January 2020, our minds turned once again to the relationship between politics and the visual arts. This time around, we thought we would extend our conversation into the early 20th century, focusing on the Russian painter Kasimir Malevich and "Suprematism," which he developed in the heady years leading up to the Russian Revolution. While Malevich's iconic "Black Square" paintings can seem like a radical break with the past, in this episode, we look at the trajectory of his career to understand how they emerged out of the context of early 20th century Russian and European avant-gardes. We conclude by discussing how a non-representational painting can still "represent" political ideals, and also touch on recent scholarship that revealed the painting's origins in anti-Black racism.

This week the BWWPodcast Team sat down to discuss what it means to be one year on since 'the black square'. We explore the big question of what the black square meant and means for organisations where the performative nature of the black square stopped at the 'black face' of it, i.e. what we see in the marketing. Is having more black faces in one space, that is a single space, without actually creating a space, that does not facilitate diversity across the organisation and the needs of black people in the workplace enough? We discuss we way in which we as black people, especially black female influencers, have been on the frontline, of adding diversity to the 'black squares'. In what ways have we helped to make progress or did we put ourselves on the frontline of exploitation? As with so many of our recent Let's Talk About It segments, we conclude on the message of being comfortable with being uncomfortable. Let's not be disillusioned and stay active in the way you know how. As always, thank you for staying with us. Join us on our social media @bwwpodcastuk

Welcome to Episode 04 of Community is a Verb a show that talks about tools for social action - social media, systems, processes, and strategies - and what we're doing to create the world we want to see. Today's show with Mr. Well-Travelled and Conner Cayson focuses on moving beyond the Black Square. The Black Square was a social media trend in June 2020 that had confusing intentions and mixed messages during the start of the George Floyd Protests. Now that we are 4 months away from that viral day, we are talking about the event and if and how people have moved forward and taken action in their own lives. This topic was inspired by this Instagram post: https://www.instagram.com/p/CGAT-S3jBhv/ We also reflect on the murder of Jonathan Price and the recent murder charge and firing of the officer responsible for his death. The world is in crisis. We're dealing with a pandemic within the pandemic: police brutality and the repeated murders of black men and boys. The most recent case is that of George Floyd, whose brutal murder at the hands - and knees - of the Minneapolis police has sparked global protests. In this inaugural TIS Off-Topic episode, the sisters unpack #justiceforgeorgefloyd, #blackouttuesday, #blacklivesmatter, #theshowmustbepaused, and where we can all go from here. Tune in for the discussion, and to get resources for how you can do your part to be actively anti-racist. Full show notes with links to resources and educational content are now available. The goal is for this to be a living document, a resource that continues to inform, support, and challenge us all. #thestrugglecontinues See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
