In this transformative episode, Ambassador Elisha welcomes a guest whose journey reads like a movie script—Chancellor K. Jackson, a former college football athlete turned best-selling author, publisher, and speaker.   Born and raised in Atlanta, Chancellor played football throughout his youth and earned a degree in Communication and Media Studies from Stetson University.   But his life took an unexpected detour when he took a teaching job in China—only to be arrested and detained in a Chinese prison for 14 days under harrowing and unclear circumstances.   In this riveting conversation, Chancellor shares:   ✅ How a shocking arrest in Beijing became the catalyst for his writing career.   ✅ The mental and emotional resilience it took to survive imprisonment abroad.   ✅ The birth of his first book, 14 Days in Beijing, and how it skyrocketed to bestseller status in three different genres.   ✅His pivot into entrepreneurship and how he's now helping others tell their stories through his publishing company.   ✅The role of perseverance, mindset, and faith in rewriting your narrative.   Ambassador Elisha opens the conversation with a powerful metaphor—a mango tree once overlooked until it bore fruit—an image that mirrors Chancellor's journey of transformation and the impact of self-investment.   Whether you're navigating adversity, considering writing your first book, or simply need a dose of raw inspiration, this episode is a must-listen.   Chancellor's story reminds us that sometimes our lowest moments are actually the soil in which greatness grows.   Connect with Chancellor Jackson:   Website: https://www.linktree.com/korleh   Want more transformative stories like this? President Trump has signed more executive orders in his first 10 days and in his first month in office than any recent president has in their first 100 days. Trump critics say the orders greatly exceed his constitutional authority. Those orders range from tariffs on Mexico, China and Canada, to pauses on foreign aid and crackdowns on illegal immigration to bans on transgender people serving in the military and the use of federal funds for gender-affirming medical care for minors.Court challenges to Trump's policies started on Inauguration Day and have continued at a furious pace since Jan. 20. The administration is facing some 70 lawsuits nationwide challenging his executive orders and moves to downsize the federal government. The Republican-controlled Congress is putting up little resistance, so the court system is ground zero for pushback. Judges have issued more than a dozen orders at least temporarily blocking aspects of Trump's agenda, ranging from an executive order to end U.S. citizenship extended automatically to people born in this country to giving Musk's team access to sensitive federal data.Executive Actions: 108, Executive Orders: 73, Proclamations: 23, Memorandums: 12Mark Brown, Constitutional Law expert and professor at Capital University Law School talks with us about the constitutionality of executive orders. Will America be able to keep its experiment in democratic republicanism going or will it slide into oligarchy, or worse? CIARA TORRES-SPELLISCY, Professor of Law at Stetson University, offers a chilling exposé of how corporations manipulate our political system for profit and offers concrete steps for consumers and investors committed to protecting our democracy in her new book, CORPORATOCRACY: How to Protect Democracy from Dark Money and Corrupt Politicians. In CORPORATOCRACY, Torres-Spelliscy explores how America's privately funded campaign finance system, combined with corporate greed and a tilt towards authoritarianism within the Republican Party, have placed American democracy on a knife's edge. Drawing on key Supreme Court cases, CORPORATOCRACY reveals how major US corporations have worked to undermine practices and laws upholding democratic principles like free and fair elections through shadowy tactics from bankrolling regressive politicians to funding ghost candidates with dark money. The motive? Profit.

Public hearings are scheduled for Aug. 19 at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. at the Holly Springs Public Safety Building. The council is expected to adopt the budget in November. STORY 2: Cherokee County Approves Coroner Pay Raise Cherokee County's coroner, Sally Sims, will receive a pay raise to $90,000 annually, starting Oct. 1. This increase from her current $60,000 base salary, plus fees, aligns her compensation with similar positions in surrounding counties. The salary will not be reduced during her term unless adjusted by state law. In addition to the base salary, Sims will continue receiving per-investigation fees set by state law. The raise brings her salary closer to those in comparable counties and ensures she receives annual cost-of-living adjustments and the same benefits as other constitutional officers. STORY 3:   Here's What's Next for the Ga. 140 and Univeter Road Intersection Project Cherokee County is advancing its Highway 140 at Univeter Road intersection improvement project by approving a non-reimbursable right-of-way contract with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). This contract requires the county to cover the $2,810,000 cost of acquiring the right-of-way without reimbursement. The project will add dual left-turn lanes and widen both roads through the intersection. The county is also seeking an update to the Atlanta Regional Commission's Transportation Improvement Program to potentially secure additional funding. Design work and preliminary plans are underway, with federal funds expected to cover 80% of the project's total cost.   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info.    Back in a moment  Break: DRAKE STORY 4:  Canton Breaks Ground on Tanner Place   Construction has begun on Tanner Place, a new public housing community on Shipp Street in Canton, which will feature 70 units to replace the 39 demolished from an older development. The project, expected to cost around $24 million and complete in 2025, will include 16 one-bedroom, 19 two-bedroom, 28 three-bedroom, and seven four-bedroom units. Funded by Low Income Housing Tax Credits and HUD vouchers, Tanner Place aims to offer affordable housing with amenities such as a laundry room, pavilion, and computer center. This development marks the city's first new public housing in nearly 50 years. STORY 5:  Cherokee Leaders Asking for Lower Density at Pearidge Development Cherokee County officials have requested that Pearidge Land Investments reduce the density of their proposed mixed-use development in the Pearidge community. The plan includes 196 single-family homes, 32 townhomes, and commercial space on 70.72 acres. The county wants the density reduced from 3-4 units per acre to 2-3 units per acre. The Canton City Council has postponed a public hearing to October 3 to allow time for revisions and public input. The development will require annexing 62.66 acres into the city and rezoning from residential and institutional to mixed-use. Improvements to access roads and emergency entrances are also under discussion. Commercial: INGLES 8 STORY 6:    Bracco Leaves Sequoyah to Join College Staff Sequoyah boys basketball coach Scott Bracco is leaving after one season to become an assistant coach at Stetson University. Bracco led Sequoyah to an 18-11 record and a state playoff berth. With 25 years of coaching experience, including two state championships and multiple awards, Bracco is excited to work with Stetson's respected coach Donnie Jones. Stetson, which won the ASUN Conference championship last season, is looking to continue its success. Sequoyah has promoted Mike Saxton, Bracco's assistant, to head coach, who will lead the team with key players like Brendan Tousignaut returning. STORY 7:    Cherokee Fire Department Celebrates Recent Explorer Graduate Madison Hall, a recent graduate of the Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services Fire Explorer program, is set to advance in fire protection. She will start at Eastern Kentucky University this fall, majoring in Fire Protection Administration with a minor in Arson and Explosion Investigation. Over the summer, Hall gained hands-on experience with fire investigations alongside Division Chief Cheri Collett and earned a scholarship to the Georgia Fire Investigators Southeastern Training Conference, where she was recognized by the Georgia Fire Investigators Association. The Cherokee County Fire Department commended Hall's achievements and looks forward to her future contributions in firefighting.     We'll have closing comments after this.    COMMERCIAL: Heller 3   SIGN OFF –   Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast. I met Gracie Caggiano when she participated in one of the very first monthly Songwriters' Sanctuary events presented by the Heartland Song Network at PH Coffee in Kansas City.  I was impressed not only with her songwriting and vocal ability, but her steadfastness in dealing with the physical barriers presented to an artist living with muscular dystrophy confined to a wheelchair.  When I learned she had not yet been on the radio, I knew I had to make that happen and welcomed her to the airwaves in early June 2024. As you will learn in our conversation, In the spring of 2023, Gracie earned a Master of Music in Composition at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory, have previously earned a Bachelor of Music in Composition in 2021 from Florida's Stetson University.    In her current work, she explores the significance of disability in her own lived experience embracing both her popular music background and classical training. In 2019, Gracie placed third runner-up in a Competition for Student Composers for her choral work The sun kept setting. In spring 2022 at UMKC, she was selected for a composition residency with the university's Graduate Fellowship String Quartet. The Lyric Opera of Kansas City performed her new micro-opera “Becoming” in June 2023. Later that year, Gracie invited listeners into her poetic space with "To Love Is to Be Honest" and "Don't Look at Me That Way" in anticipation of her debut album “I can't be anything but human” (released May 10, 2024).  You will hear selections from that ep, made possible by a grant and recorded at UMKC.  Enjoy this conversation and the debut radio performance by Gracie Caggiano.

In a high-stakes presidential election year, in partnership with the Newt and Jo Minow Debate Series at the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, Open to Debate is taking a look at more than a decade of the Citizens United Supreme Court case. The 2010 landmark decision that ruled the free speech clause of the First Amendment prohibits the government from restricting independent expenditures for political communications by corporations, including nonprofits, labor unions, and other associations, changed the landscape of political spending in the U.S. This gave rise to Super PACS and an increase in election campaign spending. Since then, there have been questions about whether the decision has harmed our democratic process. Those who support the decision argue it upholds free speech, allowing diverse voices in the political arena, and broadens the range of discourse by enabling groups to freely express their views and support candidates or policies. Those against it argue that it allows a disproportionate influence from corporations and special interest groups, and leaves the voices of ordinary citizens overshadowed by the financial resources of a few, eroding the principles of equality and fair representation.  With this context, we debate the question: Has Citizens United Undermined Democracy?     This debate is presented in partnership with the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law as part of the Newt and Jo Minow Debate Series. It will be recorded live in person on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at the Thorne Auditorium at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law in Chicago, Illinois. Advocate, author and attorney Charles H. Rose, III, joins Tim to talk about the art of cross-examination in the court of law. Charles is a successful lawyer, a trial advocate, an author, and currently, he's the Dean of the Pettit College of Law at Ohio Northern University. In this episode, he talks about one of the most dramatic features of any courtroom, the cross-examination of a witness at trial. Cross-examination is often where cases are won or lost in the court of law. This episode was originally released on February 28, 2022. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/228_-_Charles_Rose_-_The_Art_of_Cross_Examination.mp3 Watch just about any movie or TV show where the drama revolves around a court case and sooner or later the climax of the plot will revolve around a particular witness or testimony. The trial lawyers question their own witnesses in litigation, and their opposing attorneys have the chance to cross-examine those same witnesses. They get to challenge claims and statements that were made. They go back over previous testimony and look for gaps or contradictions in statements, all to win the case. In many court cases, cross-examinations are usually tense. A case can be won or lost with every witness who takes the stand. Our guest today, Charles Rose is regarded as one of the better attorneys at cross-examination. While he's now law school dean at Ohio Northern University, and he's served on the faculty at other law schools, he's had a decorated career in the U.S. Army. He served as a judge advocate where he's focused on persuasion techniques. He teaches and researches in the areas of advocacy, criminal procedure, evidence and professional ethics. Links Charles H.
