For this show, we have a returning guest, night photographer Ken Lee. I've known Ken for awhile, and the way he ended up as a guest for the show Capturing the Slowing of Time is one of my fave Behind the Shot stories. Ken Lee, along with being an accomplished photographer, is also a regular watcher, or listener, of Behind the Shot. Years ago, when I was giving away Red River Paper Sample Packs, Ken was one of the winners. He also won the How to Build Real Influence e-course from Trey Ratcliff and Lauren Bath. As I did with every winner, I checked out Ken's work at that time and made a mental note I wanted to get him on the show, but I got sidetracked. One of the downsides of only doing a show on your own is that potential guests back up quickly. Then, when I was at The NAMM Show in Anaheim CA back in 2020, I met up with another Behind the Shot watcher (or listener - I really need to find an easier way to get through that variable), Mike Martin of Casio. Mike is great guy, and we had fun chatting in-between him actually working. Next thing I knew, Mike tagged me in a tweet to tell me about a friend of his that he thought would be a good guest on the show. This friend had just released a new book, and the cover image was awesome. When I saw the name on the cover I had to do a double take, it was Ken's book! Well, Ken has another new book out, Abandoned Roadside Attractions: Under a Southwest Moon (Abandoned Union), and once again we need to chat about the cover shot. I introduced Ken above as a "night photographer", which isn't a genre you hear often, so let me let him explain: "I drive long hours in a dusty car listening to weird music, stay out all night creating photos, get dirty, hang out with other creative sleep-deprived weirdos, see the stars drift across the sky, and always find the best taco stands." Let me interrupt Ken for a second. I need to know the names of some those taco stands Ken. You need to write that up somewhere. Sorry for the break... back to Ken... "I have been exploring the Southwestern United States as well as parts of the East Coast for over nine years, brandishing a camera, tripod, and colored flashlight. I especially love creating night photos of abandoned historical places, unique features, and beautiful landscapes. These are experiences that I absolutely cherish." I mentioned Ken is an accomplished photographer, and I meant it. His images have appeared in outlets like NatGeo.com, National Geographic Books, Omni Magazine, The Los Angeles Times, Westways Magazine, and numerous other publications. He's also won numerous awards. Join Light Painting, Long Exposure, Night Sky, and Abandoned Site photographer and author Ken Lee to discuss the cover image from his new book, on this episode of Behind the Shot. Ep. 25 Lauren BathDeemed “Australia’s first professional Instagrammer” by national media, Lauren Bath pioneered the Australian influencer industry. With an online audience of close to half a million followers, she is not only one of Australia’s most powerful travel Instagrammers but also a savvy social media consultant, educator, and public speaker. It's a very open discussion and Lauren gives us a great insight as to how she gave up a 'certain' career as a chef and then built an incredible business as a paid instagrammer (and LOTS more besides). She goes into detail about how she's managed negativity and anonymous online critics, how she's dealt with pain and anxiety and how ongoing personal development has been a vital element to her fulfilment and success. Figuring herself out, is how she put it. And she shares with us the 'secrets' to doing just that. But the bottom line is, at one stage Lauren had nearly 500,000 followers and has built an incredible business based on several simple rules - and of course she also shares those with us. She teaches how to build your instagram presence. After this chat, I'm certainly signing up. #RIW #reallyinterestingwomen #laurenpebath #laurenbath #tourismaustralia #thetravelbootcamp #tourismwa #travelphotographersofinstagram #entrepreneur #personaldevelopment #selfbelief #influencer #worksmarternotharder #kerwinrae #richardinstagraham

I think Lauren Bath's story is exemplar of how dedication, commitment, and maybe a bit of luck can turn a passion like travel photography into a six-figure business in the matter of a few year. As her bio says:"Lauren Bath is a chef turned photographer thanks to her early success on top photo sharing site Instagram. Quitting her job in early 2013, Lauren launched full force into a career in the tourism industry, effectively becoming Australia’s first professional “instagrammer”!Since then Lauren has diversified into other social media platforms, as well as travel writing, and has also become involved with project management and education. With a passion for tourism and a hands on approach to social media Lauren has grown her online community to upwards of three quarters of a million followers."What I loved most about my conversation with Lauren is that, despite her huge success, she is still very much a down-to-earth person and I believe this comes through very clearly in the interview. The influence of Instagram for tourism marketing an interview with Lauren Bath. There is debate about influencer marketing and if Instagram actually impact visitation to tourism destinations. In this episode we talk with high profile Instagramer Lauren Bath about the influence of Instagram for tourism marketing. Chef turned photographer Lauren Bath is a self identified social media influencer due to her success on the popular photo-sharing site Instagram. With over 400,000 Instagram followers Lauren monetises her social media reach working with destinations and brands all across the world. On Tourism Tweetup the Podcast we talk with Lauren about influencer marketing and get her experience and insights on if it really works and what tourism brands and destinations need to consider to be successful when working with digital influencers.   Useful Links: http://laurenbath.com http://socialblade.com Show Notes: We kick off discussing what makes someone an online influencer and this relates to having a large audience online and that audience being highly engaged. Lauren discusses  how she is very open with her online communication and this in turn leads to trust. At the 5.30 minute mark we talk about how do you know that what you do is actually influencing travel. Please listen in here. Lauren discusses that Instagram or influencer marketing impacts the dreaming phase of travel and it is a touchpoint that gets people closer to deciding on a destination. From the 7 minute mark Lauren discusses all the other elements of working with an influencer like her that you may not be aware of. for example for every new client Lauren does an Instagram workshop. This way she makes sure that both her and the client receive maximum value from the activities. Around the 9 minute mark we talk about the importance of  the marketing mix. "I'm not saying don't do regular marketing - and I never have....but Instagram is a very important part of the strategy because there is a whole generation of people that are using social media that aren't reading the paper anymore and Instagram is a great place to reach them as it's such a hot platform right now."   At the 11 minute mark we go into detail about what is offered and expected by the influencer during a typical campaign including what is reported on. "Each destination will capture an audience from my visit. And the strength of that audience is solely dependent on how good their own Instagram account is." At about the 15.30 minute mark we discuss what destinations need to consider when hosting influencers. The number one thing destinations need to be aware of is that influencers will require a fee. Listen in for more. At the 19 minute mark we talk about the dark side of Instagram including those that are buying followers and signs you can look for. At the 23 minute mark we discuss fees and budgets. At about the 27 minute mark I ask if Instagram is getting stale or what if any innovation is happening in this space. Lauren discusses how Instagram still has a lot of life in it yet but always important to look at other platforms too. She discusses an example of a recent campaign she was part of with Tourism Dubai. Well worth a listen for more detail. The post The influence of Instagram for tourism marketing: Ep #44 appeared first on Holly G.
