For this show, we have a returning guest, night photographer Ken Lee. I've known Ken for awhile, and the way he ended up as a guest for the show Capturing the Slowing of Time is one of my fave Behind the Shot stories. Ken Lee, along with being an accomplished photographer, is also a regular watcher, or listener, of Behind the Shot. Years ago, when I was giving away Red River Paper Sample Packs, Ken was one of the winners. He also won the How to Build Real Influence e-course from Trey Ratcliff and Lauren Bath. As I did with every winner, I checked out Ken's work at that time and made a mental note I wanted to get him on the show, but I got sidetracked. One of the downsides of only doing a show on your own is that potential guests back up quickly. Then, when I was at The NAMM Show in Anaheim CA back in 2020, I met up with another Behind the Shot watcher (or listener - I really need to find an easier way to get through that variable), Mike Martin of Casio. Mike is great guy, and we had fun chatting in-between him actually working. Next thing I knew, Mike tagged me in a tweet to tell me about a friend of his that he thought would be a good guest on the show. This friend had just released a new book, and the cover image was awesome. When I saw the name on the cover I had to do a double take, it was Ken's book! Well, Ken has another new book out, Abandoned Roadside Attractions: Under a Southwest Moon (Abandoned Union), and once again we need to chat about the cover shot. I introduced Ken above as a "night photographer", which isn't a genre you hear often, so let me let him explain: "I drive long hours in a dusty car listening to weird music, stay out all night creating photos, get dirty, hang out with other creative sleep-deprived weirdos, see the stars drift across the sky, and always find the best taco stands." Let me interrupt Ken for a second. I need to know the names of some those taco stands Ken. You need to write that up somewhere. Sorry for the break... back to Ken... "I have been exploring the Southwestern United States as well as parts of the East Coast for over nine years, brandishing a camera, tripod, and colored flashlight. I especially love creating night photos of abandoned historical places, unique features, and beautiful landscapes. These are experiences that I absolutely cherish." I mentioned Ken is an accomplished photographer, and I meant it. His images have appeared in outlets like NatGeo.com, National Geographic Books, Omni Magazine, The Los Angeles Times, Westways Magazine, and numerous other publications. He's also won numerous awards. Join Light Painting, Long Exposure, Night Sky, and Abandoned Site photographer and author Ken Lee to discuss the cover image from his new book, on this episode of Behind the Shot. Today's guest, former White House photographer Pete Souza, is a bucket-list item for me. I started Behind the Shot because I am a fan of great photography, or more specifically great photographers. Through the over six years I have been doing the show, I have had a range of guests, in a range of genres, from legends, to people I wasn't aware of before asking them to be on the show. While I have discovered many amazing creatives through doing this podcast, when I started there were a few specific people I hoped would someday be on the show. Joe McNally checked off one of those boxes last year when he came on for the show Master of Light, and again when he helped with the show on the Best Photo Advice You've Been Given. Scott Kelby has now been on a few times, with Insights From Scott Kelby and Timeless Photography. Trey Ratcliff stopped by twice, for Raise Your Dynamic Range and Documenting Burning Man, Christie Goodwin did Fireworks, Ed Sheeran: Memories We Made, and also helped with the Best Photo Advice You've Been Given show, and Rick Sammon, David Bergman, and Don Komarechka each have been here too many times to list. Well, today checks off the name I never thought I would get, and excited doesn't begin to cover what I am feeling. Often described as the White House photographer for the eight years of the Obama administration, Mr. Souza's career, and influence on the industry, is so much more than that. Pete Souza is a best-selling author, speaker and freelance photographer. His actual title during the Obama years was Chief Official White House Photographer and the Director of the White House photo office. That job alone would instill fear in most photographers, but Souza has done it more than once! He was also the Official White House Photographer for Ronald Reagan. As an author, Pete has written some of the definitive books related to White House photography. His book, Obama: An Intimate Portrait, was published in 2017, and debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list, and to date it is one of the best-selling photography books of all time. His 2018 book, Shade: A Tale of Two Presidents, also debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. Shade is a portrait in Presidential contrasts, telling the tale of the Obama and Trump administrations through a series of visual juxtapositions. His most recent book, The West Wing and Beyond: What I Saw Inside the Presidency, was published in September 2022. This book lets us behind the scenes of the West Wing — and into the Oval Office, the Situation Room, aboard Air Force One, and beyond — in intimate detail. Based on his best-selling books, Souza became the subject of a documentary film, The Way I See It, in November 2020. If you haven't seen it, I can't recommend it enough. It is absolute fantastic. The film takes an unprecedented look behind the scenes of two of the most iconic Presidents in history, Barack Obama and Ronald Reagan, as seen through Souza's eyes and camera. As Official White House Photographer for both these Presidents, Souza was an eyewitness to the unique and tremendous responsibilities of being the most powerful man in the world. The film also reveals how Souza transformed from a respected White House photographer and photojournalist to a searing commentator on the importance of having someone with empathy and dignity in the office of the Presidency. In addition to the national political scene, Souza has covered stories around the world. After 9/11, he was among the first journalists to cover the fall of Kabul, Afghanistan, after crossing the Hindu Kush mountains by horseback in three feet of snow. While at the Chicago Tribune, Souza was also part of the staff awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 2001 for explanatory reporting on the airline industry. As an educator, Pete Souza is Professor Emeritus of Visual Communication at Ohio University, and as a lecturer he is in high demand. He has lectured on his photography at the Smithson...

As we continue in St. Paul’s Epistle to the Romans, Paul considers the glory that is to be revealed for us and how creation itself is yearning for this glory to be revealed. All things will be made new on account of Jesus’ work of redemption, but it is not fully experienced yet. We ourselves yearn in the hope of this transformation of all things including ourselves.Image: The Most Beautiful Road in the World, by Trey Ratcliff. No changes made. I first became aware of Burning Man through the gorgeous imagery of travel photographer Trey Ratcliff. He is known for his use of HDR (High Dynamic Range) in his photographs. On today's episode, we talk about photography, Burning Man, and psychedelics.

Trey Ratcliff is an artist on a somewhat quixotic mission to help spread consciousness and mindfulness to the world through photography and creativity. Running the #1 travel photography blog in the world, StuckInCustoms.com, has taken him to all seven continents over the past decade, and Google has tracked more than 140 billion views of his photos, all while building a social media presence with over 5 million followers. Chris Anderson from TED called him a “pioneer” of the now ubiquitous genre of High Dynamic Range photography. Ratcliff had the first HDR photograph to hang in the Smithsonian Museum and, sales of his large-format limited edition prints to fine art collectors worldwide have grown into a multimillion-dollar business. In 2012, he moved his family and photography business to Queenstown, New Zealand, before it became a trendy doomsday contingency plan. He is based there with his wife, three children, and their dog, Blueberry. Show highlights 2:18 Trey introduces himself and what he does. 3:45 Trey discusses the background of his new book came about and why he decided to write it. 7:53 Influencer hollowness, identity crises and personal growth. 13:23 How big is influencer fraud? “I felt so alive. I finally felt like I was finding my true life’s purpose... (When I became consciousness) It’s been a wild journey. By the way I still don’t know what I’m doing.” -- Trey RatcliffWhen a friend David Maxwell from Eight Wonder Travel called me to say he wanted to bring Trey and his business partner and friend Curtis up to our Luxury Lodge - Te Arai Lodge - I didn’t quite know what to expect, other than Trey knew how to take amazing photos. However as soon as Trey arrived I felt an instant connection. Trey embodies pure love, creativity and curiosity. He was so generous with his time and insights in to all things photography, psychedelic, Burning Man and life. He’s also managed to dissolve much of his ego whilst growing as a leading figure in fine art photography as well as an entrepreneur, educator and pioneer in HDR photography. One of the real highlights of Treys' stay was filming a 360 video podcast on my favourite hike - Bream Tail - which will feature on his youtube channel soon. Another highlight was watching his Alan Watts video - Life from above - which features many years of his best drone video. His Burning Man photography album is also unreal and a portal into another world, you can view it here. And he has a new book out here on the perils of Instagram and social media.I hope you find the podcast as conscious raising as I did. Make sure you check out Trey’s amazing work in the show notes below. And hope it inspired you to step more in to love and your heart in everything you do.Think less, experience and love more,:DougP.S If you loved the episode I would be so grateful if you would share it and leave a review. Running the #1 travel photography blog in the world, StuckInCustoms.com, has taken him to all seven continents over the past decade, and Google has tracked more than 140 billion views of his photos, all while building a social media presence with over 5 million followers.Chris Anderson from TED called him a “pioneer” of the now ubiquitous genre of High Dynamic Range photography. He is based there with his wife, three children, and their dog, Blueberry.Show Notes:Treys blog - Stuck in Customs. Trey Ratcliff is best known for his vibrant landscapes. But he's also a student of human nature. His photography business is fueled by combining compelling landscapes, with daring post production, and adding a dash of insightful marketing. On today's show, Trey shares some of thinking behind this approach. The lessons that he's learned may help your photography as well.Welcome to the Nimble Photographer podcast, hosted by me, Derrick Story. My quest is to find artists who have created their own definition of success. Yes, finances play a role in all of our lives, but are they the only measure? And how can you put a price on the experiences along the way?Today, we travel to New Zealand to learn from Trey Ratcliff. Thanks for coming along.

Trey Ratcliff is a photographer, artist, writer, and adventurer. Trey’s images and stories capture the beauty of exotic travel destinations and the humor of the bizarre situations he often finds himself in. There is always something new, unexpected and beautiful to see. Each day, Trey posts a new photo to his website, StuckInCustoms.com, which receives over one million monthly page views. Trey’s photos have been viewed over 37 Billion times and his YouTube videos over 5 million times. He currently has over 13 million combined social media followers via Google+, Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Trey was recently named one of the top 10 influential photographers on the Internet. He is best known as a pioneer in HDR photography. The resulting images are richly detailed and more closely resemble what you recall of the scene in your mind. His photo, “Fourth on Lake Austin”, was the first HDR photograph to hang in the Smithsonian. He has taught many thousands of people the secrets to his techniques via his widely popular tutorials. Trey grew up blind in one eye, which changed the way he has come to experience and visually map the world. This, combined with his degree in computer science and math, has shaped his unique, algorithm-like, approach to capturing a scene that evokes more palpable memories. Trey is regularly interviewed on major networks around the world including the BBC, ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX. He’s also been in many of the major print publications including the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and the Financial Times. Trey is also a successful entrepreneur. His endeavors include popular iOS and Android apps such as 100CamerasIn1, Stuck On Earth, The Light Camera, and the Photo Voyages of Trey Ratcliff. In addition, he launched Flatbooks.com, a growing eBook publisher and The Arcanum, a magical academy for artistic mastery. Since a new full frame mirrorless Canon camera was announced, and there are rumours of Panasonic releasing a full frame camera we asked an important question, does Fujifilm need a full frame camera in it's line up to compete with the rest. Also with the sensors having a much better dynamic range, is there a need for HDR photography anymore. Featured photographer today is Trey Ratcliff.

I have to admit I’ve always been a big fan of my guest for this week’s episode of the podcast, Doug Kaye. I have been following Doug’s work since when he was an IT expert and author, a renowned podcaster, and as of late, an excellent photographer. So it was a great pleasure and honor for me to finally be able to talk to him personally.Beginning his visual explorations in his father’s wet darkroom, Doug earned a degree in theatrical lighting design at U.C. Berkeley in the ’60s and studied cinematography at NYU’s Graduate Institute of Film and Television in the ’70s. In the ’80s he began a two-decade hiatus from photography, when he started a system-software company that he ran for 18 years. He sold that business in 1996 and decided to work his way down the corporate ladder, service as CTO of four dot-com startups in four years. He retired in 2000, wrote two technology books and started a non-profit podcasting network.Doug got back into photography in 2008. A trip to Kenya convinced him nature photography wasn’t for him, and Iceland cured him of his interest in landscape. For the past two years, Doug has focused almost exclusively on street photography, even reverting to film on occasion. Doug teaches photography locally in San Francisco and online, and was chosen as an Inception Master in Trey Ratcliff’s “Arcanum.” He leads street-photography workshops locally and in Cuba, which he has visited five times. Doug is the co-host of the All About the Gear podcast on the TWiP network.I have also been planning to visit Cuba for a long time, but for reasons that are too long to explain here, never made that particular trip. Now, after hearing about it from someone who is an expert about the island country and seeing his photographs of it, I am getting inspired again. I would certainly love to be on one of Doug’s workshops, when I go there.Duration 26m 24s.Music for this episode: “Zanzibar” Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/Links* Website* Workshops* All About the Gear* Twitter* Instagram* FacebookPhotos by Doug See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In recent years, I've taken the habit of going to Venice at least once a year for the Carnevale, a great festival where people dress up with fancy and elaborate costumes for two weeks. It's just one big feast for photographers, especially considering those people will pose for you for free. Naturally, it tends to attract lots of photographers, many of them from abroad. This year, I went to Venice with the aim of meeting up with and interviewing a few of those photographers and this is exactly what I did. One of them is my good friend, popular photographer and traveler extraordinaire Trey Ratcliff.Besides being a great artist, Trey is just a nice warm-hearted person, who has some very interesting insights on travel, life, the universe, and everything. Let me just say that this interview was not just about cameras and places, even though we did talk quite a bit about the countries he visited on his way to Italy. You will just have to listen to it to know what I mean. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

It’s been a long time in the making and the stars finally aligned to allow me to interview Trey Ratcliff right here in the loft. Trey is one of the most well known photographers online and is most commonly associated with HDR photography (high dynamic range). As man¥ of you know I have been very outspoken about not liking HDR in the past. Most of this stems from seeing really bad HDR. Trey on the other hand does HDR right and tries to share his methods with as many people as possible. No that does not mean I will be doing HDR anytime soon. But you can not deny the success and you have to give major credit where credit is due. Check out the FULL Interview at 33:54 This weeks episode is brought to you by RODE microphones. As you know we use the RODE broadcaster microphones each and every week. RODE not only makes these high end mics but they have other extremely affordable shot gun, condensers, broadcast and even lavalier offerings. If you entered the MyRodeReel.com competition RODE wanted me to let you know to keep an eye on your mailbox for a FREE microphone that will be showing up. How cool is that, not only do they run a free contest but they end up sending every participant a FREE microphone. Trey Ratcliff is probably the most viewed photographer online. He championed post processing and HDR photography. Using Google, Facebook and Pinterest to get the world out of his photography Stuck In Customs empire, we will hear from Trey about the creative environment of Burning Man and his Master Apprentice teaching system the Arcanum but I’m going to do it a little different. I know that a lot of people have seen Treys work. In fact he has 44 Billion views on Google Plus alone, I know of no other human being with so many views. It boggles my mind. Even Lady Gaga with 9 million circles has 200 million views.
“I think people can uncover this secret virtual world underneath everything simply by engaging more creatively with the photos they take.” Today we sit down with Trey Ratcliff, a futurist, photographer, filmmaker, and the man behind the world’s number one travel photography site, StuckInCustoms.com, where Trey focuses on not only the imaginatively realistic travel photos he takes and shares daily, but the stories behind them. He’s overcome blindness in one eye to become an astoundingly talented photographer, and a pioneer in High Dynamic Range, or HDR, photography, and whose works now hang at the Smithsonian Institute. Among a number of other projects, sites, and apps, Trey also founded The Arcanum, a private institution to teach artists in the digital age using technology to exist in a sort of augmented reality / mega-multiplayer online game / measured creative community hybrid-thing. And even though it’s not completely travel related, we get into his plans for the platform. Subscribe on iTunes, Stitcher Radio, Soundcloud or TuneIn What We Cover: How travel inspired Trey into a creative life of travel, photography, and creativity. How taking a creative approach towards your travel photography can help you get more from your travel experience, enhance your memories of the places you've been, better share the "feeling" of the places you've been, and expose and connect others to the world. HDR photography, what it is and why Trey went looking for it before it went mainstream. How the human race is becoming more and more connected, like a super organism and how travel relates to this. Words from an Explorer: “If you can communicate the sense of a place to a people who aren’t there, this is a wonderful thing.” "I would just get lost and time would slip away like mist in the morning and I think when you’re losing track of time, you’re really living." "Some people have the idea that if you travel nonstop you must be a trust fund baby with endless funds or a travel blogger making money from that and in reality, there are so many ways that people can make money online now," says today's guest, Billy Taylor, the Senior Editor of Travel Longer magazine, "The benefit of starting the magazine was hearing all of these different, diverse ways that people are able to perpetuate their travel." Equal parts journalist and photographer, Billy has been traveling the world writing, taking pics and eating anything he can find since 2010. He's a diver, designer, a former stunt performer, and a perpetual world traveler. Before that he got his start in his teens and then after a round-the-world trip, he realized how badly he wanted to travel more while also longer, to slow down and experience his destinations longer. Part of Billy's drive to explore and document is his pure love of people and their cultures, along with a belief that there are far more similarities that unite us as a human race, than there are differences that set us apart. He started his magazine, Travel Longer, to share this belief, vision, and purpose-driven mission with the world. Words from an Explorer "If you actually slow down and take the time to open your eyes and your heart a little bit there are so many of those little life changing moments that happen daily.” More Quotes from Billy "When you’re traveling, everything’s new and vibrant… if you’re traveling too quickly, those life-changing moments just rush past you." "When some people say they travel perpetually, it doesn’t mean 365 days a year. To just travel longer, to embrace the fact that you can extend things just a little…” "So much of work that we do is done online. It’s getting easier and easier for people to take their work on the road." What We Discuss What it is about New Zealand that Billy loves, from WOOFing to Couchsurfing, to a welcoming culture for an amazing community of travelers How a bowl of soup in Malaysia changed Billy's life How traveling longer allows you to let the experiences find you All about Billy's magazine, Travel Longer, and why he started it How he's able to get all his contributors and interview guests for his magazine The way travel can change your perspective of and restore your appreciation for home Billy's Best Travel Advice The First Step: He quotes Alex Jimenez, "I'm an equal opportunity traveler. I don't care how you travel, just that do." Money Saving Tip: Haggling for accommodation! Go in to a hotel, tell the people at the desk or the owners how much the room is listed for. Tell them on the spot that you're going to give them a lower price. What's the worst that can happen? This has worked for Billy in every continent he's been to. Listen to the show to hear about "Spludgeting!" Cheapest Airfare: Get as many quotes as you can, then ring the airline. Tell them what you've found, tell them you're a little flexible, and ask them if they can do a little better. Packing Advice: People pack things they 'might' need. That adds up. If you need it then, buy it there. And wear your heavy clothes on the plane! Internet Travel Tool or Resource: Couchsurfing, amazing for free stays and access to local knowledge (not just from your hosts, but from the Couchsurfing community!). Stuck on Earth, Trey Ratcliff's app. Favorite Travel Book: The Lord of the Rings, by JRR Tolkien Favorite Travel Gear: A scarf or sarong, which can be a towel, a cover up, a room divider, a camera prop, pillow... and it takes up no space or weight. Oh how I want to tell you what’s in the box right now. But if I did that it would spoil all the fun of listening to RAWtalk. This week there are two surpasses in store that both so happened to be waiting for the Stephens in the Elevator. The one for Eckert is just because but the one for Sutter is a belated birthday present since hipsters don’t celebrate birthdays. There was some major gear introductions last week because of the NAB show in Vegas. Atoms struck with two very cool NEW devices, one of which will capture 4K from the NEW SONY A7s which sounds like a beast. We also can’t forget DJI releasing the Phantom 2 Vision+ with a three way gimbal head. These three times get a few extra minutes this week. I can’t forget to tell you that this week I received three Nikon D610’s thanks to NIKON to record our three main camera angles for RAWtalk. We honestly didn’t test them out, we simply set them up and hoped for the best. I may have to warn you know that there is just a small singing section, not to much but just a little. Stephen hits us with the weeks Photo News Stories and I go into some discussion about Trey Ratcliff putting up 500 full res images for people to do anything but sell them. All of this and more on this weeks RAWtalk Episode #081. I want to thank Atomos, RODE, Allen’s Camera and you for making this show what it has become.

Carl Olson (Digital Film TV), Mitch Aunger (aka planetMitch of planet5D.com) and Chris Fenwick (Slice Editorial) talk about the new Nikon D4 and dissect it's video capabilities. The subject of mirror-less cameras come up - do they mean the death of DSLR's? This is a debate that Trey Ratcliff started on his StuckInCustoms blog. We talk about the new Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4 beta and it's new video editing features. We haven't talked much about the maligned FCP X so we jump back on that soap wagon. Could it be we're slowly warming up to it? The show wraps up with a new feature: tips and recommended tools.

On this episode we have with us Trey Ratcliff on a long but inspirational conversation about the art and business of HDR photography.
Episode 33 - Trey Ratcliff We have a great episode lined up for you today. My co-host Chris Fenwick shares a great tip for handling B-roll in Final Cut Pro that will save you a boatload of time. He has a great screencast showing step-by-step this technique: How To Edit B-Roll Faster. Chris and I also talk about a great little stopmotion video that the children of Chris' friend Jeff Dykhouse put together using iStopMotion, a huge Lego collection, and a firewire controlled camcorder over the course of two months. An amazing accomplishment in an attention-deficit world (video embedded at the end of this post). Today's episode features an interesting interview with Trey Ratcliff. Trey Ratcliff does not need any introduction to visual artists - he is the Jedi Master of HDR photography and the prolific blogger and curator of his website Stuck In Customs. In today's episode, Trey and I talk about a wide range of topics. For filmmakers, Trey discusses his interest in how the human brain responds to high speed video. He has conducted a number of interesting experiments using low cost point-and-shoot cameras that can record video at high frame rates. We delve briefly into the topic of HDR photography and then discuss a number of topics on the "edge" of visual arts. Trey manages to fool me into thinking he has taken up oil painting. Find out how he accomplished that! We move on to the topic of "the decade of the artist" - how business models have changed for visual artists in the 21st century. Trey candidly talks about his business model and why he chose to go the route he did. We share our common interest of the amazing music of Patrick O'Hearn. Trey Ratcliff's insight into visual arts is captivating. We only scratched the surface in this episode. No doubt we can expect more exciting developments from Trey as he continues to push the edge of visual arts.
Episode 10 of the Digital Convergence Podcast by 16x9 Cinema with host Carl Olson - a visual artist, photographer, and filmmaker based in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Rick Sammon - dubbed by HDR photographer Trey Ratcliff as "one of the godfathers of the photographic industry" - joins the Digital Convergence podcast to talk about his latest projects. He talks about taking the plunge into video using his Canon 5D Mark II and 7D on an upcoming trip to China. Rick discusses some of the challenges that still photographers must adapt to as they transition to video - including camera stabilization and getting good sound. Rick talks about his new iPhone 24/7 Photo Buffet and future plans to support the iPad. We talk HDR basics - including shooting tips and post-production tips using Photomatix and Topaz Adjust. Rick talks about his passion for photographing people. He shares many of his memorable one-liners and tips. Talking with Rick was inspiring and fun.
