This is The Digital Story Podcast #996, April 22, 2025. Today's theme is, "Night and Twilight Photography." I'm Derrick Story. Opening Monologue Daylight is great. The bulk of my photography happens when the sun is shining. That's also true for everyone else, however. So when I want to create something that's unique, and eye-catching, I wait for the sun to dip below the horizon. That's when the drama begins. I share some of my favorite tips for night and twilight photography on this week's TDS Photography Podcast. I hope you enjoy the show. Glow, then choose Orton Effect in the submenu. Be sure to turn on Advance Settings to control softness, brightness, and warmth of the effect. Aside from being a terrific standalone app, Luminar is a powerful editing extension for Photos as well. The Orton Effect does a great job of counteracting digital over sharpening giving your night shots that magical look. Twilight Photography My favorite post-sunset shots are often while there's still color in the sky. I like the oranges and blues. And a great technique this time of evening is to work with silhouettes. For example, if you're in a popular place where folks are photographing the sunsets, such as Hawaii, step back from the crowd and get the people, trees, and other objects silhouetted against the colorful sky. It's often a far more interesting picture. Combining Live Photo and Night Mode This is a great technique if you have water in the scene. I combine Night Mode with Live View Long Exposure. Make sure Live View is turned on in the Camera App for the iPhone, then in Photos, choose Long Exposure from the Live menu. The effect can be quite impressive, especially considering that this is a handheld long exposure at night. Then apply the color correcting techniques I discussed earlier, plus a little Orton Effect, and you'll have a real winner. Live Composite on Olympus Cameras Live Composite is a high-tech version of Bulb mode, where the shutter stays open for an extended period of time, but you can watch the picture unfold before your eyes on the camera's LCD screen. This is particularly nice when you have moving lights in the scene. Begin by setting the camera to Bulb Mode. Then you can navigate to Live Composite. On the OM-3 you use the rear dial. Make sure the camera is steady, set your parameters, and watch the magic appear. Final Thoughts As much as I like the people and daytime landscape shots from Maui, I'm also loving the magic the twilight and night shots bring to the library. For this show, we have a returning guest, night photographer Ken Lee. I've known Ken for awhile, and the way he ended up as a guest for the show Capturing the Slowing of Time is one of my fave Behind the Shot stories. Ken Lee, along with being an accomplished photographer, is also a regular watcher, or listener, of Behind the Shot. Years ago, when I was giving away Red River Paper Sample Packs, Ken was one of the winners. He also won the How to Build Real Influence e-course from Trey Ratcliff and Lauren Bath. As I did with every winner, I checked out Ken's work at that time and made a mental note I wanted to get him on the show, but I got sidetracked. One of the downsides of only doing a show on your own is that potential guests back up quickly. Then, when I was at The NAMM Show in Anaheim CA back in 2020, I met up with another Behind the Shot watcher (or listener - I really need to find an easier way to get through that variable), Mike Martin of Casio. Mike is great guy, and we had fun chatting in-between him actually working. Next thing I knew, Mike tagged me in a tweet to tell me about a friend of his that he thought would be a good guest on the show. This friend had just released a new book, and the cover image was awesome. When I saw the name on the cover I had to do a double take, it was Ken's book! Well, Ken has another new book out, Abandoned Roadside Attractions: Under a Southwest Moon (Abandoned Union), and once again we need to chat about the cover shot. I introduced Ken above as a "night photographer", which isn't a genre you hear often, so let me let him explain: "I drive long hours in a dusty car listening to weird music, stay out all night creating photos, get dirty, hang out with other creative sleep-deprived weirdos, see the stars drift across the sky, and always find the best taco stands." Let me interrupt Ken for a second. I need to know the names of some those taco stands Ken. You need to write that up somewhere. Sorry for the break... back to Ken... "I have been exploring the Southwestern United States as well as parts of the East Coast for over nine years, brandishing a camera, tripod, and colored flashlight. I especially love creating night photos of abandoned historical places, unique features, and beautiful landscapes. These are experiences that I absolutely cherish." I mentioned Ken is an accomplished photographer, and I meant it. His images have appeared in outlets like NatGeo.com, National Geographic Books, Omni Magazine, The Los Angeles Times, Westways Magazine, and numerous other publications. He's also won numerous awards. Join Light Painting, Long Exposure, Night Sky, and Abandoned Site photographer and author Ken Lee to discuss the cover image from his new book, on this episode of Behind the Shot. We had the pleasure of interviewing Dot Allison over Zoom video! After the haunting lead single Long Exposure heralded the release of Heart-Shaped Scars - Allison's first album in 12 years and her most personal to date - Dot Allison unveils another new single and lyric video, ‘Can You Hear Nature Sing?', out today on SA Recordings. With Allison's vocals at its most ethereal, the single is tranquil in sound and passionate in spirit. ‘Can You Hear Nature Sing?' originated from a poem written by Dot after her friend and poet Stuart McKenzie recommended some of his favourite poets. “On reading some of the work I wanted to use my immediate natural environment to write a poem” Dot explains. The result was ‘Emblems' set in an autumn landscape. Later, when Dot and Zoë Bestel decided to write a duet for the new album Dot suggested ‘Emblems' as “a starting point for the lyrics” As it transpired it proved fundamental in shaping ‘Can You Hear Nature Sing?', providing much of the lyrical content. Dot's interests in music, literature, science and nature are integral to Heart-Shaped Scars overall aesthetic. It's backdrop of exquisitely sparse and intoxicating dream-folk evokes Dot's vision for “a pure kind of album that musically imbues a return to nature. I wanted it to be comforting like a familiar in-utero heartbeat.” The album is produced by Allison alongside Fiona Cruickshank, with Hannah Peel adding string arrangements to four songs, courtesy of a quintet of Scottish folk musicians. Recorded at Castlesound Studios in Edinburgh - Dot's home town - the sessions include new collaborations with singer songwriters Amy Bowman “The Haunted” and Zoë Bestel on new single “Can You Hear Nature Sing?”. Since 1999's Afterglow, Allison has striven to “keep the listener on a journey – and myself too.” That journey has taken her from Afterglow's broad church (trip-hop, Tim Buckley-esque ballads, chilled psychedelia) to the sultry synth-pop of We Are Science (2002), the baroque Exaltation of Larks (2007) and the roots drama of Room 7½ (2009). She's worked with an extraordinary roll call of talent - Kein Shields, Hal David, Paul Weller, Pete Doherty and Darren Emerson, Massive Attack Scott Walker, Slam, Philip Shepard, The Babyshambles & Pete Doherty, underlining the huge respect her peers hold her in. On Heart-Shaped Scars Allison mines a deeply emotive seam. “Love, loss and a universal longing for union that seems to go with the human condition. Nicki Fitz-Gerald from the UK is an artist and genuine pioneer iPhone videographer/photographer. She literally wrote the book (or at least co-wrote the book) on iPhone photography: The Art of iPhone Photography. Currently she shares her knowledge through extremely popular online courses (the Long Exposure Course mention in the chat is due later this year) as well as writing for her website and Mobiography Magazine including 3 articles (Parts 1-3) on Long Exposure covering everything from the basics, shooting car light trails, waterfalls, light painting to creative long exposure portraits and blending long exposure images together to create digital art. You can get a free copy of the magazine here: https://www.mobiography.net And yet Nicki somehow still found time to speak to me… I met Nicki in 2019 at MoJofest (where she has been a guest speaker many times) on one of her evening photo walks. Here are some of my best tips for long Exposure photography: 1. Have a good Tripod, use the self-timer or better a remote 2. Find a good foreground middle ground background, use 3. Shoot HDR as needed to get a variety of exposures 4. You don’t need an ND Filter to start 5. Shoot toward the good light 6. Shoot toward the waves 7. Try to be around 1 to 3 sec when the sunset starts 8. Use my free presets to retouch in few clicks www.photo-serge.com/FreePresets www.photo-serge.com/FullPackPresets
Here is a cool idea while you are at home. Take a photo where you have some cool clouds and a nice building and make it into a fine art black and white. Dr. Sams unpacks this idea for us, kicking off a new sermon series, "Long Exposure". When you look at the whole of God through a "long exposure" filter of love, you begin to understand everything about who God is, why God is the way He is, and why scripture teaches us as it does. It is all rooted in His perfect love for us.
