We've discussed the many issues with travel on this show before, and while travel is never really that "good" for the environment, that doesn't mean that we shouldn't ever do it. Instead, I believe that we as travelers can and should find better, more environmentally friendly ways to travel, and the travel industry should lead the way. That's why in episode 186 of the Outdoor Minimalist podcast, we're looking at one of the biggest challenges that face the adventure travel industry: climate change. If you've spent time on the trail, paddling rivers, or exploring wild places lately, you've probably noticed things are changing quickly. From record-breaking heat waves to trail closures due to wildfires and floods, the landscapes we love are under much pressure. But while it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the challenges, there's also a growing movement within the travel industry to do better — to adapt, give back, and rethink what it means to adventure responsibly in a changing climate. To help unpack this, I'm joined by Leigh Barnes.Leigh serves as President of the Americas for Intrepid Travel, a world leader in responsible travel for 35 years. The company's mission is to create positive change through the joy of travel, which comes to life on more than 900 trips, all designed to truly experience local culture. Based in the Pacific Northwest, Leigh oversees Intrepid's fastest-growing region globally. Over the past decade, he's held several leadership roles at Intrepid, including Chief Purpose Officer and Chief Customer Officer. Leigh has been instrumental in embedding purpose into the company's product, storytelling, and brand—from launching First Nations experiences in Australia and the U.S. to pioneering industry-first Ethical Marketing Guidelines.INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/outdoor.minimalist.book/WEBSITE: https://www.theoutdoorminimalist.com/YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/@theoutdoorminimalistLISTENER SURVEY: https://forms.gle/jd8UCN2LL3AQst976-----------------Intrepid TravelWebsite: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/usLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/intrepid-travel/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/intrepidtravelFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/intrepidtravelTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@intrepid_travel

Most people think being CEO means having all the answers. James Thornton would say it means knowing when to shut up and listen.James is the CEO of Intrepid Travel – the world's largest adventure travel company and a certified B Corp that's been walking the talk for decades – but he didn't start at the top. Nearly 20 years ago, he applied for a job at Intrepid, got rejected, and eventually got his foot in the door as a sales rep. Since then, he's worked his way up to the CEO role, crediting his rise to listening, learning, and communicating even when it's uncomfortable. Now, under his leadership, Intrepid is on track to hit $800 million in revenue, but James believes the real key to leading a business across seven continents isn't just strategy – it's communication. In this episode, we dive into what it's like leading a company you didn't found, why purpose and profit aren't mutually exclusive, and the leadership style James calls “casual intensity.”Connect with us: Follow The Lazy CEO podcast on Instagram: @thelazyceo_podcast Stay updated with our host, Jane Lu: @thelazyceo Follow James on LinkedIn: James Thornton Follow Intrepid Travel on Instagram: @intrepidtravel Hosted on Acast. On this episode, we are joined by Susan Heinrich from Midlife Globetrotter. Susan is a Canadian writer living in Denver, Colorado. She is passionate about travel and supporting women in tourism. In 2020, she created Midlife Globetrotter, a website and platform that helps women over 40 follow their travel dreams to new places, with destination guides, practical tips and stories of her own adventures. Susan is passionate about reframing midlife as an opportunity, and explores themes of reinvention and self-discovery in her work. You can follow Susan on Instagramand Pinterest. In this episode, we talk about group tours and group tour operators, especially those that offer group trips just for women. To learn more, see Susan's blog posts about: Women's tours around the world: https://midlifeglobetrotter.com/womens-tours/ How to select a small group tour: https://midlifeglobetrotter.com/how-to-select-a-small-group-tour/ Croatia group tour with Adventure Women: https://midlifeglobetrotter.com/a-womens-sailing-trip-in-croatia/ Episode Highlights Some things to think about when choosing a group tour include: What is the pacing of the trip -- is there any free time, how often do you switch hotels? What is the group size? Small group tends to be under 14 people. Small groups have advantages in terms of the type of accommodation and the size of the tour group when exploring cities What is the activity level? Some companies like Adventure Women and Adventures in Good Company specialize in active trips and offer detailed explanations of the activity level involved in the trip If you are traveling solo, you can also look for tours that are only solo travelers When you are evaluating a group tour, be sure to read the itinerary in detail. You can also call the tour operator and see if they can give you any information on how many solo travelers there might be versus those traveling with a friend or relative. Also look at what the single supplement is. Some companies like Girls Guide to the World have private rooms by default but typically group tours are priced based on double occupancy and if you want your own room they charge a single supplement. Some companies will pair you with another solo travel as a roommate if they don't charge a single supplement. Be sure to read through the documents to understand what is included in terms of transfers and meals Understand who is guiding the trip -- is it a local or a U.S.-based guide Make sure you understand the cancellation policy and buy travel insurance If you aren't sure if a group trip is for you, opt for a private room, start with a shorter trip, feel free to opt out of activities, and maybe start with a trip in the U.S. that doesn't require a more expensive airfare. If you just want to relax or if you don't like having scheduled activities, then a group tour may not be a good fit Good tour operators for budget travelers include G Adventures (now have tours for women and certain age groups) and Intrepid Travel (who have women expeditions to places where you can meet and interact with locals in a way that you couldn't if there were men on the trip) For a luxury trip, Girls Guide to the World is a good fit and Insight Vacations is upscale and have women-only trips For nature and wildlife, Natural Habitat Adventures partner with the World Wildlife Federation and are known for wildlife trips and have women's only expeditions Adventure Women is one of the first companies to get into women only tours and typically offer four-star accommodations with active adventures Backroads is known for cycling and hiking tours and offers some just for women and they have trips that accommodate a variety of activity levels each day There are also group tour operators focused on certain destinations like Viking Women in Iceland Another themed tour is the British Book Club Tour: https://thebookclubtour.com Susan is also co-hosting an art-history based trip to Paris this spring Some women-only focused travel companies and others that have women-only trips Next Chapter Travel - small group, curated trips in Europe Next Tribe - over 45 women Gals Abroad Getaways - luxury Untethered Expeditions - adventure Adventure Women - small group adventure Adventures in Good Company - active Girls' Guide to the World - authentic, responsible (luxury) Sisterhood Travels - over 50 Country Walkers - walking/hiking Scout Escapes - mother daughter travel and group trips for women over 40 Viking Women - Iceland Explorer Chick - hiking and adventure in National Parks and abroad Insight Vacations - upscale group trips some women only Backroads - women only hiking and cycling Road Scholar - educational, some women only, over 50 Uniworld - women's cruises

Darrell shares insights on the early years of Intrepid, the company's growth, values, and sustainability efforts. 5 roasts, over 5 regions, and the story of the coffee supply chain from farm to cup. Our task here is to explore and reconsider this question: what makes great coffee? To do so I've enlisted the help of my many friends at Dean's Beans Organic Coffee. Dean's Beans is a 100% employee-owned, Certified B Corporation based out of Orange, Massachusetts. The company was founded by Dean Cycon, an environmental and indigenous rights lawyer, back in 1993. Dean set out to prove coffee around the world could be bought, sold, and delivered to our cups without compromising the health and well-being of people and the planet. Dean offered his answer to the industry and consumers alike, to the question, what makes great coffee? This episode mixes tasting with the very tactical of how we get from bean (or cherry, rather) to finished brew. We'll talk organic coffee farming, the role of coffee cooperatives, the significance of fair trade, and also, when you should or shouldn't put cream and sugar in your morning cup. -- -- ⭐️ *SPONSORED BY* Transform - https://www.transform.global/ A Good Company - https://www.agood.com/ Intrepid Travel - https://www.intrepidtravel.com/us Bodhi Surf Yoga - https://www.bodhisurfyoga.com/ -- --

It's common knowledge that train travel beats air travel in the sustainability stakes, but in recent months I've put this to the test a bit more than usual, in a country where it can be hard to do: my homeland, Australia. It all began when Dr Susanne Etti, the Global Environmental Impact Manager for Intrepid Travel, challenged me to fly the shorter route to Melbourne and then take the train with her from Melbourne to Sydney, on our way to speak at SXSW Sydney. The Melbourne to Sydney route is one of the busiest domestic air routes in the world, and seeing how the train alternative worked was such a good idea! Susanne and I recorded our thoughts along the way, so you'll hear those in this episode, along with our answers to a bunch of questions asked by listeners about our experience. Once you start looking, there are other times you might take the train instead of alternatives like flying or driving. Justin Watson, another SXSW panelist, took the train from Canberra to Sydney instead of driving or flying, and I chat with him about this experience too. Finally, I added another train ride just in time to make this episode - travelling on the Australind train from Perth to Bunbury on my way to run workshops in south-west Western Australia. Another fantastic experience, and I tell you all about it in this episode. Episode Notes The Middle East was the fastest-growing tourism region this year until the Israel-Hamas war began in October. No other region in the world saw its tourism fully recover this year — let alone surpass their pre-pandemic level, reports Dawit Habtemariam, Skift's Global Tourism Reporter. Through September, the Middle East saw its international tourist arrivals rise 20% above pre-pandemic levels, according to the UN World Tourism Organization. Two factors boosting Middle Eastern tourism were expanded air connectivity by airlines like Emirates and investments by tour operators like Intrepid Travel. Those ongoing strengths may help the broader region rebound if a truce in Gaza is brokered. Next, more travel companies are investing in the potential for artificial intelligence to help overhaul both customer sales and internal operations. Amazon Web Services had a conference last week, sharing AI-based updates to services used by travel companies such as Accor, Cathay Pacific, and Booking.com, reports Justin Dawes, Skift's tech reporter. Exhibit A was a new AI-based trip planning tool from Accor, the Paris-based hotel group. The chatbot helps recommend rooms at a hotel as well as local tours and activities based on answers to questions it asks travelers and past customer reviews of activities. Accor's new chatbot may help travelers find it easier to plan trips. It may also reduce call volumes at Accor's contact center. Finally, travel startup Klook has raised $210 million in financing. Klook has now raised more than $900 million in financing since its founding in 2014, reports Sean O'Neill, Skift's Senior Hospitality Editor. The Asia-based startup, with offices in Hong Kong and Singapore, competes with Berlin-based GetYourGuide as the most heavily funded startup in selling travel experiences, such as walking tours. Bessemer Venture Partners and other notable investors took part in the funding round. Klook said it was profitable and was aiming to go public someday.

Are you a fully fledged eco-nomad or merely eco-curious? Do you belong to the B-Corp Bleisure tribe or the 'Greener-Than-Thou Family'? This week our Sustainable Travel podcast series gets personal about what it means to be a more responsible traveller. Juliet Kinsman and Jon Weeks reveal there is significantly more than one way to engage with sustainability, and the way you do it says much about which tribe you belong to. Zina Bencheikh of Intrepid Travel explains B-Corp accreditation, and why B-Corp businesses are likely to appeal most to ethical explorers.Plus, Tracey Poggio, chair of ANTOR (Association of National Tourist Offices and Representatives) explains how destinations can learn from each other's experiences to become more eco, and the task she gives her children every time they travel abroad.Find out what type of traveller you are via Anna Hart's accompanying article here.Find out what else we're exploring as part of our Sustainable Travel campaign here. What does success mean to you? Defining success in a field can define the field. Defining success for ourselves will define our lives. And so here, friend and coach of mine, Paul Zelizer and I go through the essential exercise of defining what to each of us makes for a successful social entrepreneur. Paul is a business coach for social entrepreneurs and host of the Awarepreneurs Podcast where he's published over 300 episodes with deep-dive interviews with world-class social entrepreneurs. Here we have a unique style of show for you, where back and forth, Paul and me reveal each of our own Top 5 characteristics of success in social entrepreneurship. Before we recorded the conversation you're about to hear, we each created our own lists (with no knowledge of the other's list) to see collectively what sort of definition we might come up with for what it means, what it looks like to be a “successful social entrepreneur.” This same conversation, in a slightly different final edit, is likewise being released on Paul's show, Awarepreneurs—which, if you're curious to check out you can go to Awarepreneurs.com, or, search for the show wherever you get your podcasts. So, in this episode here, on The Social Entrepreneurship & Innovation Podcast with me, Cory Ames as your host, you'll hear Paul's origin story to social entrepreneurship and then, together, our 10 Characteristics of Successful Social Entrepreneurs. #socialentrepreneurship #socialentrepreneurs #socialentrepreneur ⭐️ *SPONSORED BY* Dean's Beans - https://deansbeans.com/ Transform - https://www.transform.global/ A Good Company - https://www.agood.com/ Intrepid Travel - https://www.intrepidtravel.com/us -- --

We start today's episode driving along the crazy well known Amalfi Coast road to our last location, the city of Amalfi. In this week's episode we are finishing up our 8 day tour from Rome to Amalfi with Intrepid Travel. We were blown away with this city and you will be too when you hear all about it. The town, the beaches, the history and one of our favourite things – the spectacular waterfall hike into the mountains above the city walking through lemon groves, exploring ancient ruins on the side of a crystal clear river and past many waterfalls and then stopped for a cold drink at the most authentic Italian restaurant up in the hills. Our accommodation was a locally owned hotel in the best position in Amalfi – which is one of the things Intrepid Travel pride themselves on and we tell you about the piazza where we were staying, the incredible duomo which dominates the city, the pretty streets full of funky shops and the little hidden places and restaurants we enjoyed – thanks to our local guide Luca. We couldn't miss a ferry ride to glamorous city of Positano – and it is as spectacular as you could imagine. Then, omg, we tell you about the craziest day – Saint Andreas day – that started with a rude awakening from cannon fire and very loud bell ringing from the church outside our room that went on for over 10 minutes before 6am and then finishing at midnight with a very unique religious parade and procession that culminated with a fascinating tradition which involved a massive silver statue, men running up 62 stairs all because of pirates. Oh and also listen to how much trouble we got into trying to make our way through the jam-packed plaza while this was going on, only three of us made it through. Stay listening to the end to hear our final thoughts and fond memories of this Intrepid Travel tour – but not just ours, I spoke to the others on the tour and we tell you about what they thought, their recommendations and of course everyone's favourite place for a glass of wine throughout our trip together. Please enjoy our last instalment of our tour from Rome to Amalfi. The deadly earthquake that struck Morocco Sept. 8 had some serious repercussions for tourism, particularly as Morocco has become a popular place to visit. Last year more than 10 million tourists visited Morocco overall; at the time of the quake, for example, Intrepid Travel had more than 600 guests in the country. In this episode, we go behind the scenes of Intrepid's decision-making strategy, with Intrepid CEO James Thornton, tours editor Nicole Edenedo and host Rebecca Tobin. What's the communication strategy for an operator with guests on the ground? What's the right way to render assistance? And then – when's the right time to return, and how? And how does a company reassure travelers that it's ok to visit (in this episode, Thornton says that Intrepid put a link for future travelers on its website's home page, but since then, the link has been moved; the info can be found here: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/au/travel-alerts This episode was recorded Monday, Sept. 18 and has been edited for length and clarity. As promised today we are taking you to one of – if not the most spectacular places in Italy. Sorrento and the Isle of Capri. We are on days 4 and 5 of our small group tour from Rome to Amalfi with Intrepid Travel. We are loving the tour, especially the relaxing nature of this trip – no early starts, no rushing, and time to explore on your own, if you want to. In this episode we will take you walking through the gorgeous streets of Sorrento, through the piazzas and bustling shopping areas full of cafes, bars and restaurants. Next we go to the most atmospheric, beautiful restaurant, dining under the twinkling lights in the lemon trees of a citrus orchard. One of our favourite days in Italy was taking a private boat to the Isle of Capri. Luca our guide arranged this for us – as it was an optional excursion – and it was magical. The sparkling blue water, jumping off the boat to swim in the Mediterranean, the views at the top of the Isle of Capri, and then singing and enjoying our trip all the way home. To finish our perfect day we did a gelato making class – which turned out to be so much fun. We tell you all about the most popular and best gelato in all of Sorrento and the family who have been making it for generations. Stay listening to the end to hear one of my funniest jokes – Lyle made me tell it – oh and I even sing a few bars of the song that will always remind of the fond memories of this tour, especially Sorrento and the Capri boat trip, plus the wonderful friends we made. If you would like to see all the pictures of this stunning part of Italy, or find out more about the Intrepid Travel tour we are doing – then you definitely should take a look at the show notes by clicking here www.beachtravelwine.com/podcast/71/sorrento You can see all our Italian podcast episodes here www.beachtravelwine.com/italy or visit our website at www.beachtravelwine.com So please enjoy episode 71 --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/leanne-mccabe/message
Episode Notes Airnbnb's New York City listings for short-term stays dropped 77% over a three-month period during which the city enacted stringent host registration rules. A major New York City hotel operator believes that decrease will contribute to a significant tailwind for hotels next year, reports Executive Editor Dennis Schaal. An New York City-based hotel executive, who declined to be identified, said Airbnb's struggles could give his company a boost. The hotelier noted that revenue per available room for city hotels was already projected to jump roughly 10% in 2024 from pre-Covid levels. He added the figure could rise at least three percentage points given the clampdown on Airbnb listings. However, Schaal writes not everyone in the hotel industry agrees. Some hotel owners have argued that Airbnb's inventory numbers are too low to significantly impact hotels in New York City. Next, Morocco was hit by a massive earthquake last week that caused nearly 3,000 deaths. Yet several tour operators are organizing trips in the country, writes Travel Experiences Selene Brophy. Although some tour operators decided to cancel or suspend operations following the deadly earthquake, Intrepid Travel and G Adventures have chosen to reroute trips away from areas most heavily affected. In addition, Journey Morocco, which provides multi-day tours around the country, confirmed it would be operating all of its trips. However, the company's founder Redouane Ouadi said some tours to impacted areas would be modified. Finally, JetBlue Airways CEO Robin Hayes said it's selling flights it can't fly due to the ongoing air traffic control shortage, reports Edward Russell, editor of Skift publication Airline Weekly. Hayes said at an aviation conference that Washington hasn't done enough to ease the operational limits from lower staffing levels. He urged the government to grant airlines waivers to flight rules at busy New York City-area airports well in advance. Russell writes airlines would be better able to plan schedules maximizing the number of seats to New York with fewer flights. Russell adds the waiver is needed because airlines are required to use their slots and runway timings 80% of the time or risk losing them. United CEO Scott Kirby said the air traffic control shortage could cause hundreds of flight delays that wouldn't have occurred in the past.
In this episode, Brennen has an enlightening conversation with Mikey Sadowski, the VP of Global Communications from Intrepid Travel which isn't just any travel company. They've been at the forefront of responsible tourism, setting a benchmark by becoming the first adventure travel company to attain carbon neutrality back in 2010. But they're not stopping there.Recently, Intrepid has magnified its focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), making strategic investments that echo its commitment to a more inclusive and diverse travel world.
As promised this week, we are doing something Intrepid. Actually, this week's episode is the first part of a 7 day tour we did from Rome to Amalfi with Intrepid Travel. We start today in Rome – visiting the Roman Baths before we meet the other members of our tour and our Italian guide – Luca to get all the info on our tour and have our first dinner together. Next morning, we take the fast train from Rome to Naples. Naples was a real eye opener – and we tell you all about the edgy Spanish Quarter with all its decorations and street art which is everywhere. Then we talk about the most famous Napoli football player of all time who is everywhere you turn in Naples and why the whole city was covered in blue and white decorations – literally! We walk through the streets, visit the stunning veiled Christ statue, and it was incredible. Next we visit the massive 23,000 square metre plaza, walk along the Bay of Naples to the famous castle that is supposedly held up by an egg. Next, we have lunch and eat the famous Neapolitan pizza. We tell you about the unique toilet paper for sale around the old city area and we finish in a gorgeous little outdoor bar right in the heart of the Spanish quarter. Lastly, we take you to the metro station, so far underground I thought we would never reach the bottom before we board another train on our way to our next destination – that is for next week's episode. If you would like to see all the photos from this episode, and the interactive map with all the places we mention on it then go to the episode description on the player you are now listening on and click on the link to Episode 69. Episode Notes September 5 was the beginning of New York City's host registration rules. However, the city's electronic verification system isn't ready yet, reports Executive Editor Dennis Schaal. Three sources familiar with the new process said the city hadn't completed implementing the system for verifying listings with short-term rental platforms like Airbnb. Hosts with shared rooms need to obtain registration from the city to legally accommodate a maximum of two guests. Hosts also need to be present during the stay. Schaal notes that platforms such as Airbnb could face fines of $1,500 per transaction processed from an unverified listing. Airbnb said in a court filing this June that it has to remove a listing to avoid penalties when a verification fails. Next, as the pandemic is over, what does the future of tourism look like? Global Tourism Reporter Dawit Habtemariam explores five critical issues industry executives will address at this month's Skift Global Forum. Habtemariam writes that leaders from brands such as the U.S. Travel Association and NYC Tourism+Conventions will discuss topics like the absence of Chinese tourists and the relationship between empty downtown offices and tourism. Brand USA CEO Chris Thompson said there's no U.S. tourism recovery without Chinese travelers. The CEOs of Visit Britain and Intrepid Travel will also touch on the challenges of trying to encourage travelers to visit hidden gems – sites beyond the well-known tourist attractions. Finally, several major U.S. cities are facing hurdles in their recovery from the pandemic, so are they struggling to attract tourists? Associate Editor Rashaad Jorden turns to Ask Skift, our artificial intelligence chatbot, for answers. Jorden writes challenges such as U.S. visitor visa delays that have complicated attracting tourists from key overseas markets. However, several large U.S. cities are still putting up big tourism numbers. New York City is projected to welcome at least 6 million more visitors this year than it did last year. In addition, international passenger traffic at Boston's Logan Airport has already recovered to pre-Covid levels. Conquer towering peaks and rugged trails in The High Atlas Mountains with Morocco's first female mountain guide – Hafida Hdoubane. We take a deep dive into hiking trails, female mountain guiding and community tourism with Intrepid Travel – a group adventure travel company and the world's largest travel B Corporation. Recorded on location, join us on an immersive audio adventure as we hike through the High Atlas mountain routes, meet Amazigh villagers and guides and learn more about how Hafida first became a mountain guide. Hafida is a trailblazer in the trekking community and became one of the first certified female mountain guides in 1994. She now leads trekking tours throughout the country, including Intrepid's Women's Expeditions. At the time, most of the guides working in the Atlas Mountains were European and male, so Hafida's entry into the hiking world was met with surprise and in some cases scepticism as Moroccan women were expected to stay at home and focus on raising a family. But Hafida decided to tread a different path and defy expectations. From the wild Atlas mountains to Marrakech's historic medina, we meet the women who are shaking up Morocco's tourism industry and working hard to get more women into mountain and city guiding.
