#562 In Today's Episode of the podcast I chat with YOU as I dive into your most pressing photo questions. I take listener-submitted questions and share advice, stories, and practical strategies based on my own experiences as a photographer. Whether you're wrestling with when to put a signature or logo on your images, trying to wrangle energetic kids during a family session, or feeling overwhelmed by all the technical settings on your camera, I'm here to help you navigate those common hurdles.KEY TOPICS COVEREDSignature & Logo Usage on Photos - Raymond explains when photographers should (and shouldn't) add their signature or logo to images, distinguishing between branding needs and concerns over theft. He notes that landscape photographers may benefit more from signatures due to wider image use, while portrait photographers often don't need them unless for advertising.Managing Kids in Family Photography - The episode offers strategies for keeping young children engaged during sessions, such as making games out of posing or incorporating playful pranks to elicit natural smiles and genuine interaction. These methods lower stress, capture better moments, and leave clients happier.Tackling Technical Overwhelm and Regaining Enjoyment - Listeners struggling with camera settings (like manual white balance, exposure, or composition) are advised to simplify their process—using presets, prioritizing aspects like “moment” over technical perfection, and even shooting for fun with fewer controls, as with film or point-and-shoot cameras, to restore joy.IMPORTANT DEFINITIONS & CONCEPTSWhite Balance: A camera setting that adjusts color temperature to render whites correctly under different lighting conditions, measured in Kelvin.Client Closet: A collection of clothing offered by a photographer for clients to use during shoots.DISCUSSION & REFLECTION QUESTIONSWhy might you choose to add (or not add) your signature to your images? How can playful interaction with children change the outcomes of a photo session? In what ways do issues of confidence versus competence appear in your creative process, and how can you address them? What steps could you take today to get more photography clients, inspired by Raymond's strategies?Sign up for your free CloudSpot Account today at www.DeliverPhotos.comConnect with Raymond! What is the role of landscape photography in a post-industrial world? In today's podcast, we consider some possibilities in a chat with Jade Doskow, current photographer in residence for Staten Island's Freshkills Park, and Cal Flyn author of the book Islands of Abandonment. Above image: © Jade Doskow While our two guests work in different disciplines, which leads to divergent approaches to the pictures they make, their shared purpose tells similar stories. Among the topics we discuss are a distinction between romantic landscapes of the past and a more ambivalent attitude to the subject today, and a photographer's responsibility to make pictures that go beyond merely decorative intent. You'll also discover how dedication to a fine art passion project can lead to career advancement through paid assignments. Join us for this fascinating discussion about recording the gradual process between post-industrial decay and engineered regeneration, or other states of rewilding Guests: Jade Doskow & Cal Flyn For more information on our guests and the gear they use, see: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/podcasts/photography/reclaiming-a-natural-landscape-with-jade-doskow-cal-flyn Stay Connected: Jade Doskow Website: https://jadedoskowphotography.com/ Jade Doskow Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/j_doskow/ Jade Doskow Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jade.doskow/ Jade Doskow at Freshkills Park: https://freshkillspark.org/os-art/jadedoskow Jade Doskow Lost Utopias Documentary: https://www.philipshane.com/lost-utopias Jade Doskow Urban Omnibus Project: https://urbanomnibus.net/2022/11/extra-terrestrial Cal Flyn Website: https://www.calflyn.com/Cal Flyn Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/calflyn/ Cal Flyn Linktree: https://linktr.ee/calflynCal Flyn Islands of Abandonment: https://linktr.ee/IslandsofAbandonment

She discusses the challenges and joys of running workshops and one-to-one tuition, as well as the importance of printing her own photographs. Lizzie also talks about the impact of social media on the photography industry and the need for photographers to find their own direction. Lizzie discusses her experience of exhibiting her photography and judging photography competitions. She mentions the challenges of finding local galleries that are a good fit for her work and the importance of selling prints through her website. Lizzie also shares her approach to judging photography competitions, emphasising the need for a balance between initial impact and deeper emotional connection. She talks about her favourite places to photograph, her bucket list destinations and her preference for responding to the conditions rather than planning her images. She also provides tips on processing colours to achieve a balanced and calming tone in landscape photographs.TakeawaysTransitioning from a hobbyist to a professional photographer takes time and confidence.Running workshops and one-to-one tuition can be rewarding but it's important to understand the needs and motivations of the participants.Printing photographs allows for greater control and a more tactile experience compared to viewing images on a screen.Social media has changed the landscape of photography, but it's important for photographers to stay true to their own vision.Exhibitions and selling prints can be a fulfilling way to share and showcase one's work. However, it can be challenging to find local galleries that are a good fit for your work. Selling prints through a website can be a successful alternative. When judging photography competitions, look for images that have an initial impact and evoke an emotional response.Lizzie's favourite places to photograph include the highlands and islands of Scotland, Harris and Lewis, and local woodland areas. Her bucket list destinations include New Zealand, Tasmania and Greenland.Lizzie's approach to processing colours involves lifting shadows, reducing clarity and shooting in gentle light to create soft and calming tones. She prefers to respond to the conditions rather than planning her images, allowing for spontaneity and exploration in her photography.Connect with LizzieWebsiteInstagramFacebookSupport the Show.
