"Opponents are using critical race theory as really more of a catchall to include anything teaching students about systemic racism, any mention of white privilege, and really the definition that they're using has expanded to include anything related to equity, diversity and inclusion," he says. Also, critic Kevin Whitehead reviews the last albums from bassist Mario Pavone, which he recorded near the end of his life.

This week we pay tribute to the late Mario Pavone, with an epic live set in which his majestic bass sound propelled the Thomas Chapin Trio into the stratosphere at the 1995 Newport Jazz Festival. The rest of the playlist revolves around modern jazz guitar, with two different way to pay tribute to Bill Frisell by the Unscientific Italians and Skuli Sverrison, the revelatory new albums by Hungarian guitarist Csaba Palotai (with Steve Arguelles) and French guitarist Paul Jarret, the guitar talk of Joel Harrison and Pete McCann in tribute to Vic Juris (for Harrison's new imprint ASG), and the solo soundpainting of Lake Michigan by Scott DuBois. Completing the dense playlist, are the new albums by Joe Lovano and Dave Douglas' Soundprints Quintet, the first of new material after a string of Wayne Shorter tribute albums, Tell No Lies and Ocelot. Composer/bassist/jazz musician Mario Pavone discusses his collaborations with Anthony Braxton, Paul Bley, Bill Dixon, Wadada Leo Smith and an emerging generation of new improvisers. Mario’s various ensembles have included Matt Wilson, Gerald Cleaver, Joshua Redman, Tony Malaby, Dave Douglas, Steven Bernstein and Craig Taborn among others. “His work has never been less than compelling.” (NY Times). “Mario Pavone works his strings with the force and persistence of a sculptor chipping away at granite. The sheer dynamism of his playing is matched by the lustre of his writing and arranging for small bands” (The New Yorker).

This week we look back at an earlier phase of the history of jazz in South Africa, focusing on some foundational bands and musicians, and the musicians they inspired both in South African and elsewhere. Carl Testa is an imaginative and resourceful bassist/composer who has been making a name for himself for the past decade in the fields of composed and improvised music. Based in New Haven, he has worked closely with Anthony Braxton, Mario Pavone, and Christopher Riggs among many others. In addition to being the production manager at Firehouse 12, he is also the  Director of Publishing and Creative Technology for Braxton's Tri-Centric Foundation and has spent the past several years incorporating live electronic processing into his solo performances. For the past ten years he has booked the Uncertainty Music Series, which will come to a close this September with a two day festival at Firehouse 12.

Black-Eyed News: Janis Joplin is coming to Broadway! A musical based on the life of the late singer will begin previews this fall at the Lyceum Theater in New York City. Titled An Evening With Janis Joplin, the musical has been touring the country since it debuted in Portland in 2011. Mary Bridget Davies, who played Janis in the touring musical, will reprise the role for the Great White Way. The life story of the late, great George Jones is coming to the big screen. An as-of-yet-untitled biopic of the country music legend is currently in the beginning stages of production with a target release date in the next two years. The film had been licensed by Jones himself in 2011; according to his wife Nancy, Jones had hoped to see the film before his death in April of this year.
