The environs of the Hajj are an ideal setting for discussions and deliberations on matters of benefit between Ulama, leaders and experts. This episode recounts Mufti Taqi Usmani's numerous encounters with erudite Ulama of the world during his visits to the Haramain, including one altogether amazing appointment with a renowned Muhadith in Makkah on the day of Ashura.

Mufti Taqi (hafidhahullah) recounts his Fardh Hajj performed in 1383H/1964, in which his respected father, Mufti Muhammad Shafi (rahimahullah) respectfully engaged with, and wrote to prominent Saudi figures including the grand Mufti and King, highlighting encroaching Westernisation and rising immorality in the land of the Haramain and warning of the devastating consequences on the blessed sites if left unchecked.

After some years of earnest yearning, Mufti Taqi Usmani (hafidhahullah) returns to Makkah at the age of 20. A cherished journey by sea, he reminisces about moments in Aden, disembarking in Jeddah, and his very first tasting of olives. He also paints vivid pictures of the ease of access to the Ka'bah at the time, the types of structures that existed then, and the vista he beheld when he climbed atop Jabal Abu Qubais.

Prior to immersing ourselves in his Hajj travels, this episode opens a window into his rich life, impeccable qualities, and fruitful contributions to a wide range of Islamic disciplines. Thus, through his memoirs, and this series, we encounter not only the journey of Hajj, but the reflections of a scholar whose words have shaped students, institutions, communities, and hearts across the world.

İmâm-ı A‘zam Ebû Hanîfe (r.a.)'in hayatının ilk yıllarında hadîs öğrenmiş ve özellikle fakih muhaddislerden hadîs almıştır. Ebû Davud et-Tayâlisî (r.âleyh)'in rivayetine göre, Ebû Hanîfe (r.a.) şöyle demiştir: "H. 80 senesinde doğdum, 94 senesinde sahâbî Abdullah b. Enes (r.a.) geldi. Onu 14 yaşımda gördüm ve ondan Hz. Peygamber (s.a.v.)'in; "Bir şeyi aşırı sevmen gözünü kör, kulağını sağır eder" hadîsini işittim." İmâm Ebû Yusuf (r.a.)'in rivayeti ise şöyledir: "H. 80 senesinde doğdum; 16 yaşımda, 96 senesinde babamla birlikte haccettim. Mescid-i Haram'a girdiğimde büyük bir kalabalık gördüm ve babama sordum. Babam; "Bu, sahâbeden Abdullah b. Haris ez-Zebîdî (r.a.)'in ilim halkasıdır" dedi. İlim halkasına katıldım ve Abdullah b. Haris (r.a.)'i; "Resûlullâh (s.a.v.)'i "Dîninde fakih olan kimseyi Allâh (c.c.) ummadığı yerden rızıklandırır ve kederlerini giderir" buyururken işittim" dediğini duydum. İmam-ı Azam ilim öğrenmeye başladığında kendisine; "Hadîs ilmini tercih edersen sonunda hata ettiğinde, seni yalancılıkla itham ederler ve alaya alınırsın" şeklinde nakledilen haber sahih değildir. Çünkü Kur'ân ve Sünnet'i bilmeyen fakih olamaz. Onun Kur'ân ve Sünnet'i bilmediği halde İmâm-ı Şafiî (r.a.)'in; "İnsanlar Ebû Hanîfe (r.a.)'in fıkhına muhtaçtır" diye ifade ettiği seviyeye ulaştığını kâbul edip, sonra da "Ebû Hanîfe (r.a.) hadîs bilmiyordu" dememiz büyük bir çelişkidir. Aksine o, yüzlerce önde gelen muhaddisten hadîs almış, onlarla uzun süre birlikte olmuştur. Kendisinden rivayet edilen müsnedler, İmâm-ı Mâlik (r.a.) ve diğer muhaddislerden önce, hadîsleri fıkıh konularına göre, onun tasnif ettiğini göstermektedir. And He opens with a single, precise word: innama.In Arabic, innama is a word of restriction. It limits what follows to a specific, bounded list. Nothing more. When the Prophet ﷺ said innama bu'ithtu li utammima makarimal akhlaq — I have been sent only to perfect noble character — that innama tells us everything. The entire prophetic mission, all of the Sharia, all of the ibadah, all of the fasting and prayer and dhikr — it all points toward one destination: makarimul akhlaq, noble character.This is a mirror we should hold up regularly. If our engagement with the religion is making us more arrogant, ruder in how we speak, more dismissive of others — something has gone wrong. The religion of the Prophet ﷺ does not produce that. It produces humility, gentleness, and excellence in character. If we are getting closer to the rituals but further from good akhlaq, we are missing the point of the rituals entirely.So when Allah uses innama to introduce what He has made haram, He is doing the same thing — drawing a clean, limited boundary. Not an overwhelming list. Not everything that makes life enjoyable. These specific things. That is all.
