Welcome to Bad Dad Rad Dad, where Kylie and Elliott talk about the movies they watch each week while searching for better cinematic dads. Along the way, they feel complicated about a big budget A24 film, celebrate National Canadian Film Day, see the Canadian premiere of their most anticipated movie of the year, experience the uncanniness of seeing their own city on screen, and watch a film that just isn't for them (even if it is for other people). This week's movies are: Civil War (2024), I Used To Be Funny (2024), I Saw The TV Glow (2024), Before I Change My Mind (2022), and Marketa Lazarová (1967).Follow along onInstagram: @baddad.raddadLetterboxd: kylieburton Letterboxd: ElliottKuss Hosted on Acast. Our final episode has finally arrived. The big one. The best ever Czech film, according to the Czech people: František Vláčil's Marketa Lazarová. Ryley joins Cole and Zach to unpack this masterpiece and a specific type of period film that eschews modern themes and character dynamics in favor of the cold, harsh realities of the past.

This week is the beginning of a new series, where Cole, Zach, and guest host Ryley sink their teeth into the Czechoslovak New Wave. Kicking off these conversations is Věra Chytilová's wild, crazy, madcap provocation, Daisies. Simultaneously one of the movements most popular and difficult films, it's the perfect unconventional focal point for a discussion on our first topic—anarchism. Stay tuned for our next episodes, which will be on The Cremator, The Firemen's Ball, and Marketa Lazarová!

For all the glühwein and good cheer, mid-December also marks the darkest part of the year, when families around the world gather to watch their favorite holiday ghost story: A Christmas Carol. Easily the most famous spooky Yuletide movie, it is by no means the only one: Black Christmas was arguably the first American slasher movie; the mischievous creatures from Gremlins squealed their way into many hearts in 1984; and the Alpine Krampus has more credits to his name than Santa has reindeer. For generations, the heart of winter—not Halloween—was when we told unsettling stories around the fire, whether they featured the ghosts of our own pasts or Gryla the Icelandic ogre and her evil Yule cat. This week on Smarty Pants, writer and director Kier-La Janisse offers a primer on how these stories have found their way onto the screen, from annual BBC television specials to big-budget Hollywood bloodbaths.Go beyond the episode:Kier-La Janisse's Yuletide Terror, co-edited with Paul Corupe, is out of print, but her House of Psychotic Women, an “autobiographical topography of female neurosis in horror and exploitation films” was just released in an expanded editionJanisse's documentary Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched is a thorough history of folk horror, which makes its way to the holidays with movies like Krampus (2015) and Rare Exports (2010), and wintry tales like Marketa Lazarová (1967), The White Reindeer (1952), Hagazussa (2017), and November (2017)You can watch the newest episode of the BBC's anthology series A Ghost Story for Christmas on Britbox. Czech it out! Get ready for a deep dive into the feminist Czech New Wave classic DAISIES (aka Fucking With Dudes and Putting Them on Trains). Documentary filmmaker Jessica Schilling joins us to debate its merits against the bus that couldn’t slow down. You can watch a whole host of Czech New Wave classics we discuss on this episode, including Věra Chytilová’s DAISIES, Jaromil Jireš’ VALERIE AND HER WEEK OF WONDERS, Ester Krumbachová’s A REPORT ON THE PARTY AND ITS GUESTS, František Vláčil’s MARKETA LAZAROVÁ, as well as the omnibus PEARLS OF THE DEEP, by signing up for a 14-day free trial of FilmStruck. If you’re interested in watching Miloš Forman’s masterpiece of comic absurdity FIREMEN’S BALL, Criterion Collection has an out-of-print DVD, but you may be able to unearth a copy with a quick trip to your local library. Luckily, Jiří Menzel’s CLOSELY WATCHED TRAINS can still be purchased on Criterion’s web site if you’re in the mood for a hefty dose of anti-fascist fatalism. FilmStruck also has a copy of the film we’ll be watching for our next episode, Georges Franju’s French surrealist gem EYES WITHOUT A FACE.

In zwart-wit nota bene! Maar Gudo en John geven niet snel op. Volgens deze cinefielen is het zien van de opmerkelijke klassieker Marketa Lazarová namelijk een buitenkansje. Nu de argumenten nog.

Harsh times in this medieval epic from Czechoslovakia.  Set against the backdrop of Christianity succeeding Paganism in the Middle Ages, 'Marketa Lazarová' is a tapestry of different characters fighting to survive in an unforgiving winter landscape.  There are the brothers who abduct a German traveler, thereby setting off a war between the king and his heathen peasants.  At the center of it all is Marketa, a beautiful girl about to enter the convent, whose fate is changed forever.  If this all sounds epic, it pretty much is, but Andrew lamented that it was hard to tell who was who.  Fair criticism, and since this was Phil's second viewing, it was easier to follow and a much more enjoyable experience. The photography alone is incredible.  A serious recommendation for cinephiles everywhere, from 'In the Queue'.
