While Nat, Drew & Erin are on Christmas holidays, enjoy another episode of Drew's holiday series Behind the Christmas Hits. Each episode tells the story of a different Christmas song, and does this one ever have a story. For a song that's sparked so much discussion & controversy in recent years, it began as something a husband & wife sang at dinner parties with no intention of ever recording it. Enjoy!

30 days of night? More like 30 days of BITE, AMIRITE??? This high concept 2007 vampire film was based on the equally high concept 2003 comic series, which was in turn was based on an earlier unproduced high concept movie script. That's Hollywood baby! Also, to clear things up, JR was thinking of WHITNEY Huston and Derek was thinking of ANGELA Basset. Thank you for coming to our TED Talk.
Tune in as this program plunges deeper into the holiday season! For this third episode of December, Clayton Jones II and Shawn Murphy (Men Who Like Men Who Like Movies!) are circling back around to review Love Hard, the 2021 Netflix Christmas rom-com about the fake-dating and matchmaking antics that ensue after a dating column writer travels across the country for a seemingly charming guy and then realizes she's been catfished. Subverting the Submissive Asian Male stereotype, Shawn's hate for You've Got Mail and Forrest Gump (with Arthur also loathing the latter), the rapey air that “Baby, It's Cold Outside” could give off in these modern times, and the terrors of dating app culture land as some of the subject matter for this episode.Directed by Hernán Jiménez, Love Hard stars Nina Dobrev, Jimmy O. Yang, Darren Barnet, Harry Shum Jr., Matty Finochio, Althea Kaye, James Saito, Rebecca Staab, Mikaela Hoover, Heather McMahan, and Fletcher Donovan.Spoilers start at 23:00Create your podcast today! #madeonzencastrHere's how you can learn more about Palestine and IsraelHere's how you can keep up-to-date on this genocideHere's how you can send eSIM cards to Palestinians in order to help them stay connected onlineGood Word:• Clayton: Hazbin Hotel• Shawn: Pluribus• Arthur: Sin City Reach out at email2centscritic@yahoo.com if you want to recommend things to watch and read, share anecdotes, or just say hello!Be sure to subscribe, rate, and review on iTunes or any of your preferred podcasting platforms!Follow Arthur on Twitter, Goodpods, StoryGraph, Letterboxd, and TikTok: @arthur_ant18Follow Arthur on Bluesky: @arthur-ant18Follow the podcast on Twitter: @two_centscriticFollow the podcast on Instagram: @twocentscriticpodFollow Arthur on GoodreadsCheck out 2 Cents Critic Linktree
« Il fait trop froid dehors, reste chez moi. » « Cher Père Noël, amène-moi un homme pour Noël. » « All I want for Christmas is you.

Merry Christmas, Honestly listeners! We hope you've been enjoying the parties, the spirit of charity, the lights, the tree at Rockefeller Center, the schmaltzy movies, and of course, the infectious Christmas music everywhere you turn. But did you know that the Americans who wrote nearly all of the Christmas classics were . . . Jewish? Indeed, many of the writers of your favorite Christmas jingles were the children of parents who had fled Russia and other parts of Eastern Europe during the great wave of immigration between 1880 and 1920. Sammy Cahn, the son of Galician Jewish immigrants, wrote the words to “Let it Snow!” and was known as Frank Sinatra's personal lyricist. There is also Mel Torme, the singer-songwriter responsible for composing the timeless “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire.” His father fled Belarus for America in the early 20th century. Frank Loesser, a titan of Broadway and Hollywood musicals, wrote the slightly naughty “Baby, It's Cold Outside.” He was born into a middle-class Jewish family, his father having left Germany in the 1890s to avoid serving in the Kaiser's military. Johnny Marks, the man who gave us “Rudolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer,” “A Holly Jolly Christmas,” and “Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree”—yes, he was also one of the chosens. Then there's the greatest American composer of them all, Irving Berlin. His “White Christmas” is one of the biggest-selling singles in the history of American music. Berlin's earliest memory was of watching his family's home burn to the ground in a pogrom as his family fled Siberia for Belarus before emigrating to NYC in 1893. Today, Free Press columnist Eli Lake explores why and how it was that American Jews helped create the sound of American Christmas. We hope you enjoy this delightful and surprising jaunt through musical history. Happy holidays! *** This show is proudly sponsored by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE).
