In episode 165 Sam is joined by filmmaker György Pálfi, writer and director of Hukkle and Taxidermia. His new film Hen [Kota] is in UK cinemas from 22 May 2026. En dat terwijl de onvrede over de Russische oorlog in Oekraïne groeit en die oorlog niet bepaald lekker verloopt voor de Russen.    Heeft zo'n uitgeklede optocht nog wel het beoogde resultaat? We vragen het aan Mart de Kruif, Ruslandkenner en voormalig commandant Landstrijdkrachten.  (11:38) Miloš Forman's Oscarwinnende biopic Amadeus, over de geniale componist Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, is opnieuw te zien in de Nederlandse bioscopen. Een wervelende, extravagante film met daarin een Mozart die even briljant als kinderlijk is, en daarbij de starre, Apollinische huiscomponist Antonio Salieri tegenover zich moet dulden. In het 18e eeuwse Wenen ontvouwt zich een tweestrijd die draait om geestesdrift, jaloezie en de vraag wat het met een mens doet om in de omloop van een uitzonderlijk talent terecht te komen.  Te gast is Claudia Rumondor, componist en musicoloog. Rumondor studeerde af op de film en heeft hem net weer in 4K bewonderd.  (24:34) Honderd jaar geleden bood de arts Magnus Hirschfeld in het Berlijnse Institut für Sexualwissenschaft revolutionaire hulp aan transgender personen. Dit eerste seksuologisch onderzoekscentrum ter wereld werd een toevluchtsoord voor wat toen bekendstond onder de naam ‘travestie', en hielp de eerste mensen aan geslacht veranderende operaties.  Alex Bakker is historicus en zelf transman, en schreef in zijn nieuwe boek Transgender pioniers over dit revolutionaire instituut en de eerste mensen die daar een transitie ondergingen. Hij is journalist en schreef het boek Vergeten plekken, vergeten mensen – Atlas van het Nederlandse slavernijverleden. The People vs. Larry Flynt is a 1996 American biographical drama film directed by Miloš Forman, chronicling the rise of pornographer Larry Flynt and his subsequent clash with religious institutions and the law.[4] It stars Woody Harrelson, Courtney Love as his wife Althea, and Edward Norton as his attorney Alan Isaacman. The screenplay, written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, spans about 35 years of Flynt's life, from his impoverished upbringing in Kentucky to his court battle with Reverend Jerry Falwell, and is based in part on the U.S. Supreme Court case Hustler Magazine v. Falwell.

‘No more animal testing': Scientists in Zlín developing lab model of the human small intestine, Prague unveils winning design for Miloš Forman Square redevelopment, Understanding Czechia's falling birth rate  

     This week- two films about men with great destines.     After attempting suicide, former court composer of Joseph II, Antonio Salieri confesses to having murdered Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. 49 years earlier, learning that Mozart was a childishly obscene reprobate with divine musical inspiration lead Salieri to renounce God and swear to take his revenge by destroying Mozart. Another masterwork by one of cinema's patron saints of nonconformity, Miloš Forman, with a screenplay by Peter Shaffer, based on his Tony Award winning play, and driven by one of the greatest villain performances ever put to film, Amadeus.     In 2005, a seemingly random mass stabbing left two people dead and one injured before the assailant jumped off a cliff; his body was never found. Three years later, found footage horror filmmaker Koji Shiraishi sets out to make a documentary about the aftermath and interviews the survivors. Shohei Eno, whose wounds are in the shape of a strange symbol, claims that he is grateful and ever since has witnessed miracles nearly everyday. Before long, Eno begins to hint at another act of extreme violence will be happening soon and insists  Shiraishi has a part to play in it. A found footage by the director who literally wrote the Textbook of Fake Documentaries and made two of the first J-Horrors to breakout internationally, Koji Shiraishi's woefully overlooked Occult.     All that and Dave describes his loungewear, Tyler suffers in Indiana, and Kevin makes friends with the little guy from Asobi. Zuzana Stivínová is a well-known Czech actress. She played one of the main roles in the stage version of Václav Havel's Leaving in 2007 and today is most commonly to be found on the boards of the National Theatre in Prague. She has also worked with such screen directors as Věra Chytilová and Miloš Forman, and starred in the acclaimed TV drama Wasteland. Stivínová, who comes from an artistic background, also spent several years living in New York in the 2010s.

On the fiftieth (!!) episode of All the Film Things, my friends, filmmakers Emma Catherine and Franklin Ritch, join me in analyzing Miloš Forman's 1975 psychological comedy- drama classic, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest! This episode is spoiler- filled and contains some explicit language.One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest follows R.P. McMurphy (Jack Nicholson) as he becomes a patient at a mental hospital. He quickly becomes a leader with his rebellious, lively nature that awakens his fellow patients but antagonizes the woman who runs the ward, Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher), which creates a power balance slowly shifts in McMurphy's favor. The film starts as a comedy- drama but elevates in the third act when it becomes a tragedy. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest has a stellar ensemble cast that includes Danny DeVito, Will Sampson, and Brad Dourif. This film is the second of three films to have won the “Big Five” at the Oscars and has been widely viewed as one of the greatest films ever made for now 50 years. The film is based on Ken Kesey's 1961 book and, after Kirk Douglas bought the rights soon after the book was published, he wasn't able to get this film made in the 60s, so his son Michael Douglas took over the project and history was made. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is one of my very favorite films and I'm thrilled to have finally had such a stimulating conversation on the film for this podcast.This is Franklin's second and Emma's first time on the podcast! I interviewed Franklin at the end of last year (check out Episode 34). I became friends with Franklin approaching two years ago and Emma about a year ago at Film Bar but they have been both friends and collaborators for well over a decade. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a longtime favorite of Franklin's as well while this was Emma's first time watching the film. CINEMATIC VIOLENCE WILL BE CELEBRATED IN A WAY WHICH WILL DISTURB SOME LISTENERS.  TGTPTU returns to its regularly scheduled Squib Games (S15) with the earlier of its latest temporal pincer movement pairing, TO LIVE AND DIE IN LA (1985).  Directed by William Friedkin, this is another Big Willie movie but not a Wyler: the second William has the credited surname of Peterson and this is his first film. William Peterson was so new to film acting that he called his fellow Chicagoan thespian buddy John Malkovich to see what he should quote as his asking price to play the lead character of Richard Chance, a thrill-seeking Secret Service agent who'll lose his partner only days from retirement (red-shirted partner's, not Chance's) and will get a new partner in John Pankow's Agent John Vukovich to pervert in his (Chance's) vengeful pursuit of a counterfeiter played by Willem Dafoe. (Next year Peterson would play another officer of the law in Manhunter as covered during TGTPTU's Mann Aged Season {S5,E5}; as an EPISODE CORRECTION Pankow did not portray Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in Miloš Forman's film Amadeus but had done so at the Broadhurst Theatre, replacing Tim Curry.)  Because it's a Friedkin flick, there's an epic car chase meant to top The French Connection; because it's shot from a Friedkin script (adapted from a novel by former Secret Service agent Gerald Petievich, who receives a cowriting credit), there was a lot of improvisation on set driven by the actors, with both the ending and opening scenes re/written during shooting. Mentioning actors, the film is stacked with supporting roles by Dean Stockwell, John Turturro (who'll get more mention later in Season 15), and the Michael Mann-created film noir for television Crime Story's very own Darlanne Fluegel (listen back to S5,E6 for insights on this TV series).   TGTPTU hosts become split on the merits of the film. Thomas describes the movie as The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973) on neon cocaine, but—no spoilers—you'll have to listen to the ep for whether he believes this is a good thing. Also, Jack lets out the three-legged dog and Ryan, while finding it impossible to resist singing the title, has issue with William Pederson. Parce que je suis « une personne à risque » comme disent les psychiatres, mon prochain accouchement pourrait bien venir tout bouleverser. Sur le filDepuis toujours, je suis persuadée qu'une malédiction plane sur sa famille. Elle a tué mon grand-père, ma grand-mère et a presque failli avoir ma mère. Et si cette malédiction était une maladie mentale transmissible ? Sur les traces de mon héritage familial, je mène une enquête pour savoir comment y échapper et protéger mon fils. Sur le fil est une série documentaire sur le trouble psychiatrique qui rongent ma famille depuis toujours : la bipolarité. C'est une enquête personnelle et intime sur un mal à la fois inconnu et célèbre dont Kanye West est le fier représentant. On this episode, acclaimed actor and Beatles fan Jeff Daniels joins “Everything Fab Four” to discuss his experience filming a movie scene with George Harrison and getting his guitar signed by the Quiet Beatle. Across his five decade-long career, Jeff Daniels has worked with some of the world's most revered filmmakers. He made his screen debut in Miloš Forman's Ragtime, and followed with James L. Brooks's Terms of Endearment, Woody Allen's The Purple Rose of Cairo, and Mike Nichols's Heartburn. Daniels has been nominated for numerous Golden Globe and Screen Actors Awards for his dramatic turns, including such films as Jonathan Demme's Something Wild and Noah Baumbach's The Squid and the Whale. In 2012, Daniels joined the cast of HBO's political drama The Newsroom, which earned him a Prime Time Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Playing Will McAvoy, Daniels' monologue about American exceptionalism in the series pilot has been viewed more than 22 million times on YouTube. His acclaimed television work also includes his portrayal of John O'Neill in the Hulu miniseries The Looming Tower and FBI director James Comey in Showtime's The Comey Rule. Arizona-based writer and playwright Ashley Naftule returns to the podcast for a look at the Czechoslovak New Wave of the 1960s, focusing on the recently rediscovered 1963 film The Cassandra Cat, and its director Vojtěch Jasný,. In the strange fairy tale The Cassandra Cat, a village is disrupted when a travelling circus comes to town featuring a magical cat wearing sunglasses who can reveal the true natures of the townsfolk by changing their colours when he looks at them, turning thieves grey, hypocrites purple and lovers a bright red, scandalizing the adults into a panic and delighting all the children. One of the few directors to win two prizes at Cannes, Jasný is not as well remembered as his Czech contemporaries like Miloš Forman but the artistic movement he was a part of was extremely influential on world cinema, using avant-garde techniques and comedy to express modern Czechoslovakian concerns in the brief period where the Soviet Union permitted more freedom of expression and less censorship. We also discuss another, darker film by Jasný, 1969's All My Good Countrymen, made right when Moscow sent tanks to Czechoslovakia to crush the revolution and reestablish “normalization” of the state. Despite winning the Best Director prize at Cannes for it, Jasný was pressured by the new regime to apologize for making the film, and instead went into exile along with his contemporaries, with their films banned domestically until the final days of the Soviet Union.
