South Korea recently declared and then lifted martial law for the first time in more than 40 years. What led to it -- and what it tells us about the state of democracy in a key U.S. ally.
In an address broadcast live on Tuesday night, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law in a move that shocked the nation – and the world. But within hours, after lawmakers unanimously rejected the move and protesters converged on parliament, Yoon went on live television again and backed down, promising to lift the emergency measure. On today's Big Take Asia Podcast, host K. Oanh Ha sits down with Bloomberg's Sam Kim in Seoul to break down the stunning turn of events. They talk about what happened on the ground during the brief period of martial law, and what the political chaos means for an emerging democracy that remains a key military ally and trading partner of the US. Some of my earliest memories are from taking road trips with my father along two-lane roads in Wyoming, Colorado, South Dakota, and Nebraska. I joined him as he drove from town to town, covering high school football and basketball games. I love taking road trips. And once I turned 16, I loved getting behind the wheel for hours. Through the years, eight- and ten-hour drives have been no big deal. But over the last couple of years, that's changed. Now, my body only lets me ride in a car for about six hours before it starts causing problems. Gone are the days of my long road trips... After nearly an entire season of the World Endurance Championship, the series finally had a repeat winner at the Six Hours of Fuji as as the #6 Porsche team of Kevin Estre, Andre Lotterer and Laurens Vanthoor took a sixteen second victory over the WRT BMW team, with the #36 Alpine team scoring their first podium of the season in third. Gary Watkins joins Kevin Turner to review all the action from Fuji, including the missed opportunities left on the table by Toyota and Ferrari, as well as Cadillac's Earl Bamber, who span off into the outside wall late on. There's also praise for Charles Milesi with chat about Alpine and BMW's improvement over the course of the season. And as usual, there's a full review of the LMGT3 class too, as AF Corse got Ferrari's first win of the season, and the Manthey PureRacing Porsche squad of Bachler, Malykhin and Sturm wrapped up the Championship with a round to spare. It was a surprise win for the Porsche customers Jota Sport as they took victory in the World Endurance Championship's Six Hours of Spa... depending on your definition of the term "Six Hours"! With Earl Bamber having a huge wreck on the Kemmel Straight with just under two hours to go, a lengthy red flag was needed to fix the armcoe barrier, and with it, the stewards took the discretion to reset the clock back to the time of the Red Flag. But was this ultimately the "right" move? Joining Kevin Turner on the Autosport Podcast is Gary Watkins and James Newbold as they break down why the clock was reset, why Ferrari lodged a formal protest against the result, as well as where all their cars sit performance wise with Le Mans just around the corner. There's also discussion on Alpine as they bridge the gap to the sport's "Big Three" of Porsche, Toyota and Ferrari, and the LMGT3 class, where Manthey took the class victory after the Iron Lynx Lamborghini's had to stop for fuel in the closing stages. Over the last 37 years God has directed Henry Gruver to walk and pray for over 250 cities, pulling down strongholds, reclaiming the land for God. God protected him when knives were put to his throat and guns to his head. He was in a car accident in which he was dead for 27 minutes. He was transported through the universe, past the planets and galaxies to Heaven. Henry walks you across flowers that sing the praises of the Father and a flowing robe that sings the righteousness of the saints. His 27 minutes death experience gives comfort and reassurance to the redeemed of the Lord, especially those with loved ones who have passed away.
