Realizado y presentado por: Antonio Bernal (Observatorio Fabra, Barcelona) y Jorge I. Growing up in Nazi-occupied Poland, Theodor Meron had unsurprisingly very limited access to education. But with the help of family in then Palestine, Meron got a place at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and, well, the rest is history. From roles as a legal adviser of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs - and sharing some "controversial" opinions on the rights of Palestinians - to being a judge for the United Nations Criminal Tribunal, there is almost nothing the 96-year-old hasn't done; he's even writing poetry! As our guest on this week's episode, Theodor Meron regales us with the story of his life and how he came to be the 'godfather' of international humanitarian law. Andrei lies moaning from a head wound on the Pratzen Heights, symbolic of the numerous souls dead or wounded.  The depiction of Andrei chasing military glory but falling short, was influenced by how Kutuzov historically lost his son-in-law, Theodor von Tiesenhausen, at Austerlitz.   Kutuzov sent the young noble, who served as an aide-de-camp, to rally retreating troops. After Tiesenhausen seized a fallen standard and ran forward, he was quickly shot in the chest. Frenchmen swarmed him and there was a barbaric scuffle over his military decorations. When Napoleon took a victory lap, he noticed the “glorious” sight of the barely alive Tiesenhausen still holding the flagstaff. Andrei is a physical causality but was imbued with a realization of the baseness of war. Going in and out of consciousness, Andrei held onto the value of his vision. Unable to open his eyes, he thought, “Where is it, that lofty sky that I did not know?” He did not remember the intricate battle plans nor leading the charge. What brought him back to earth was the burning pain in his head. When he heard the sound of approaching horses and French voices, he finally opened his eyes and captured the clouds floating majestically and the blue infinity beyond. Tolstoy has Napolean have a fictional interaction with Andrei while making his triumphant walk.  Napolean comments on the gallantry of the fallen, notably a grenadier whose body was swelling and blackening. It is sinking in for Andrei that there is very little admirable about such a man's life being wasted. Napolean approached Andrei, whose hand was still on the flagstaff and asserted: “That's a fine death!” Andrei now regarded Bonaparte's words as the buzzing of a fly. Napoleon seemed insignificant compared with the sky, which is representative of the Almighty.Andrei desperately wished to be assisted back to life. He collected all his strength to utter a sickly groan. Napoleon immediately ordered Andrei to be treated and rode on met Marshal Lannes, who congratulated his Master. Andrei remained in agony, but regained his bearings after he was placed with other wounded officers. Napoleon encounters Andrei once again when he inspects the overflow of valuable prisoners. The senior officer captured was Nikolai Repnin-Volkonsky, an Imperial Guard Colonel, who Andrei recognized from Petersburg.  Napoleon commended Repnin, saying: “Your regiment was honorable in fulfilling their duty.” Repnin responded “The praise of a great commander is a soldier's highest reward.” More kind yet superficial words were bestowed on a young lieutenant. Napoleon then sees and remembers Andrei and calls him, “mon brave” an old fashioned term meaning “my good fellow” or “my good man.” Andrei remains silent on the only occasion he would meet his one-time idol. All the vain interests that absorbed men like Napoleon now seemed so insignificant. This is Tolstoy's comment on the value of military glory. Andrei thought of the pettiness of such men compared to the lofty, equitable and gentle sky.  His mind was on a plane of solemnity. Various factors led to his mental state including: the loss of blood, nearness of death and appreciation of the divine. Napoleon instructed that Andrei and others be cared for by his own doctor and bid Prince Repnin, Au revoir!” He galloped away -- shining with satisfaction. Frenchmen who had carried Andrei had stolen the gold icon his sister gave him. However, seeing the favor the Emperor bestowed, quickly returned the charm. Beholding the icon made Andrei consider: “it would be good if everything were as clear and simple as it seems to Mar'ya.” He yearns to know where he should seek for help and what to expect beyond the grave. Andrei considered the nature of the Almighty and how to address his prayers. Andrei realizes that he understands the greatness of something incomprehensible but paramount.  He conceptualized the Almighty's ineffable power and contrasted this with image on his amulet, which is a critique of graven images. When Andrei's stretcher moved on, he again felt pain that was difficult to endure. He experienced visions of his father, wife, sister, and future son.  He considered his quiet home life and peaceful happiness that he never appreciated. He realized only the heavens promised a similar peace.Upon examination, Napoleon's doctor pronounced a grave prognosis: “He is a nervous and sickly subject…and will not recover.” Inevitably, the doctor and War Machine moved on leaving Andrei and others to the care of the inhabitants of the district. And that finally ends analysis Book 1 and about 25% of the novel.

The Bhagavad Gita is a world classic often considered to be not just the 'Hindu Bible' but sometimes the 'Indian Bible' as well. Over the last two centuries, it has attracted much scholarly attention from Indologists. Ithamar Theodor's bold and revisionist monograph The Philosophy of the Bhagavad-Gita (Cambridge UP, 2025) aspires to further develop their scholarship by treating the Gita as a discrete philosophy and by offering a systematic survey of its main topics and doctrines, in so doing emphasising their philosophical potential. A major innovation here is the articulation of the Gita's structure extracted from Vedantic and Yogic pattens of thought, presented in a modern fashion. This centres on the Gita's Vedantic concept of hierarchical reality and its Yogic concept of a ladder. Beyond its overarching philosophical and holistic approach to the Bhagavad Gita, the book addresses major themes such as dharma, rebirth, Yoga and Sankhya, bhakti, the Upanishadic nature of the text, and concepts of divinity.

Dein Verlorener

Will Purnell is back on the podcast today, and a lot has happened since we last talked. If you don't know Will, he's a Seattle Prep alum who just wrapped up four years of collegiate running at Boston College. This fall, he's heading into his fifth and final year at Duke to close out his NCAA career. When we last caught up in spring 2024, Will was just starting to bounce back from a season-ending injury the previous fall. He managed to run 14:25 for 5K outdoors. Solid, but he knew there was more in the tank.Fast forward to now, and Will's been on an absolute tear.He and teammate Theodor Schucht became the first athletes in BC Track & Field history (men's or women's) to break 14 minutes in the 5,000m. Theodor ran 13:46.71 for the school record, and Will followed with 13:53.08, now #2 all-time. He also ran 28:48 for 10K at Raleigh Relays. Quietly, one of the best distance seasons in program history. But the numbers only tell part of the story. In this episode, Will and I dig into what it actually took to get there—mentally, physically, and emotionally. We talk about the setbacks that forced him to grow, how he rethought his approach to training, and what he learned about patience, consistency, and trusting the process. We also get into the nuts and bolts of modern training, like the double threshold system and altitude training, and how it's helped him get to the next level. If you're chasing your own breakthrough, coming back from injury, or just looking to train with more purpose, there's a lot to take away from this conversation.I promise that you will find value from this episode. If you're enjoying the show, consider hitting follow and leaving a five-star review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify! Theodor introduces us to the Consult Cards — a thoughtful, low-tech innovation designed to support families navigating the overwhelming world of neonatal intensive care.Rooted in his love for consults and desire to improve communication during high-stress conversations, Theodor created a deck of color-coded, parent-friendly flashcards that cover essential NICU topics: diseases, respiratory support, nutrition, imaging, and vocabulary. Drawing from his own study strategies and guided by feedback from NICU family focus groups, these cards aim to reduce anxiety, improve understanding, and foster meaningful engagement between families and the medical team.We discuss the process of developing, evaluating, and iterating on the cards, and how Theodor hopes to expand their reach. A special 100th episode special for your favorite anti-capitalist podcast! In this episode we discuss "riot" dogs in Chile and Greece on the frontlines of various protests from 2008-2019. A riot dog is a stray dog that accompanies street protesters. The term originated during the 2008 Greek riots when a number of stray dogs remained among the protesters even when violent rioting broke out.[1][2][3] A few of Greece's riot dogs acquired a large following of fans around the world (such as Loukanikos),[4][5][6] and in Chile a riot dog named Negro Matapacos became well known. He was commonly known for joining protests, barking at police, helping in street battles with the Greek police as well as participating in anarchist rallies and picket lines, at least since December 2008.[1] The dog had a reputation of being fearless, usually being in front of the protests and having tear gas thrown at him multiple times. Loukanikos was active throughout all Greek protests and often leading the protesters towards the police. Initially a stray, he moved from building to building, but was said to have preferred to be on the streets. He was groomed and cared for by multiple left-wing organizations. He was nominated for person of the year in 2011 by Time magazine.[3] In September 2011, on the occasion of a striking policemen's union marching in the centre of Athens,[4] he was "initially confused" between two opposite sides, both of uniformed policemen, but when the riot police contingent attacked their striking colleagues, the dog sided with those who were being attacked. The Art Newspaper's correspondent for the Middle East, Sarvy Geranpayeh, has been reporting on the effect of Israel's military bombardment of Gaza on artists and art workers there since the beginning of the Israel-Hamas conflict in 2023. In the wake of the three-stage ceasefire that began last Sunday, she has returned to those she has spoken to over the past 16 months to hear their views on the agreement and what happens next. The Musée du Louvre in Paris this week opened a show of the great 13th-century Italian painter Cimabue. Our associate digital editor, Alexander Morrison, spoke to Thomas Bohl, the exhibition's curator. And this episode's Work of the Week is actually three works produced in a family business of printmakers in 17th-century Netherlands. The works, by Hendrick Goltzius, and his grandsons Theodor and Adriaen Matham, are part of a new show, A Family Affair: Artistic Dynasties in Europe (Part I, 1500–1700), at the Blanton Museum of Art, part of The University of Texas, Austin. The curator of the exhibition, Holly Borham, tells me more about this printmaking dynasty.A New Look at Cimabue: At the Origins of Italian Painting, Musée du Louvre, Paris, 22 January – 12 May 2025A Family Affair: Artistic Dynasties in Europe (Part I, 1500–1700), Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas, Austin, US, 25 January-15 June; the second part of this exhibition, covering the period 1700 to 1900, opens in June. The Art Newspaper's book The Year Ahead 2025, an authoritative guide to the year's unmissable art exhibitions, museum openings and significant art events, is still available to buy at theartnewspaper.com for £14.99 or the equivalent in your currency.
