Send us a textIt's the most wonderful time of the year! The holidays are a time for friends and family, gifts under the tree, and sugarplum dreams unless, of course, you're on the naughty list. If that's the case, you might be called on by one of these Christmas Cryptids from folklore. While good boys and girls get a visit from the Jolly Old Elf himself, naughty children get a visit from Gryla, the ogress with an appetite for naughty children. If cute and cuddly is your thing, you might want to turn back now. According to Icelandic tradition, children who did their chores would receive new clothes for Christmas. On Christmas night, the enormous Yule Cat would visit and peer in windows to see who was wearing their new Christmas clothes. If you had none, you became dinner. Hear about all of these and more on this special Christmas episode. Merry Christm . . . uh . . . This week on "Streaming Without A Paddle" Andrew and Ted discuss the Amazon Prime Video MEGA-BUDGET Action / Comedy "Red One". This two-hour Christmas movie stars Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Chris Evans (Captain America) with co-starring performances from J.K. Simmons, Kiernan Shipka, and Lucy Liu. Callum (played by The Rock) plays Santa's (a.k.a. "Red One" played by J.K. Simmons) head of security or as they call head of E.L.F. (Extremely Large and Formidable) and is tasked with saving Red One after he has been kidnapped. Two immediate suspects emerge, Gryla and Krampus, after learning that "The Wolf" (played by Chris Evans) was nothing more than an unwitting accomplice. However, no bad deed goes unpunished and "The Wolf" is now tasked to assist in saving Santa. Tune in to the show to see what Andrew and Ted thought about this action / comedy.

It's Friday the 13th and what timing to have this unlucky day around the holidays when people have their company parties and in some places, the October spook houses remodel their facilities to dedicate it to Krampus. Yes, we all know about Krampus – the Christmas bad cop who punishes children who do not obey their parents. It may or may not be an ill-fated omen but the synchronicity of Friday the 13th gives us a reason to look for a bunch of darker characters from Krampus to Gryla and those mischievous tricksters, the Yule lads coming down from the mountains, one-by-one as Christmas approaches. Tonight on Ground Zero (7-10 pm, pacific time), Clyde Lewis talks with storyteller, Jeff Belanger about KRAMPUS THE 13th.Originally Broadcast On 12/13/24
But when it comes to true fear, even Krampus would run in terror at the sight of Iceland's Gryla, the Christmas Witch! With roots dating back to the 13th century, Gryla is not to be messed with! (Iceland's Christmas Witch) *** It was Christmastime, 1938, and 19-year-old Margaret Martin had just graduated from Wilkes-Barre Business College with honors and was eager to secure a secretarial job. Her eagerness would lead to her disappearance. (The Murder of Margaret Martin) *** Ask anyone over the age of twelve what they think about the existence of Santa Claus and you'll most assuredly get the same answer. But that has not stopped people of all ages reporting sightings of the jolly old elf, and some of the stories are downright creepy. Alas, this week plague has struck the House of Raven (well, the flu has, at least) and Eleanor is laid-up feeling decidedly unwell. So, we have dipped our beaks into the vault, and pecked out a seasonally-appropriate Patreon Exclusive episode to plug the gap!Originally released last December, we start the episode off with a chat about the common characteristics of 'Snow Queens' or 'Snow Witches', including lots of examples, from Babushka and La Befana to Mother Holda and Gryla, as well as Snow Goddesses like Skadi and Chione. After drawing some common threads together, and discussing some problematic issues with many representations of Snow Queens, it's then onto the main event: Martin's telling of his take on "The Snow Queen" - after which we have a little chat about the story and distinctions made between our version and that of Hans Christian Anderson. We really hope you enjoy it, and fingers-crossed that a) Martin doesn't catch 'the lurg' as well, and b) Eleanor feels well enough to record this week's Magic and Medicines episode about the Zodiac - after which we should be back on track! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays (Magic and Medicines about folk remedies and arcane spells, Three Ravens Bestiary about cryptids and mythical creatures, Dying Arts about endangered heritage crafts, and Something Wicked about folkloric true crime from across history) plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Jeff Belanger returns to celebrate the scariest, most violent and dangerous holiday – Christmas! His new book, “The Fright Before Christmas: Surviving Krampus and Other Yuletide Monsters, Witches, and Ghosts,” details the real reasons we put up trees, hang stockings, string up lights, and exchange gifts this time of year, and it actually has nothing to do with Santa Claus or even religion. He discusses how monsters, goblins, ogres and witches from other cultures around the world morphed into the merry festivities of the season today. And he shares the stories and legends behind Krampus, the elf-like TomTen, Karakoncolas, the Gryla, and the Yule Cat! Naughty children beware! Seasons Greetings, or rather Season's Screamings because today we're talking about the ghouls, monsters, and creepy creatures of Christmas covered in the new book The Fright Before Christmas: Surviving Krampus an other Yuletide Monsters, by Jeff Belanger. According to the book synopsis: "Christmas time is truly the darkest and creepiest time of the year filled with devilish creatures lurking in the shadows waiting to get us. Best known is the Krampus who has been the subject of films and songs. There was a time in the late 1800s when people sent Krampus cards, not holiday greetings. There are other violent and dangerous monsters from all over northern climes who have been hunting naughty children for centuries. From shapeshifters to mountain trolls, to elves, to heavy-handed cohorts of Saint Nicholas, the Christmas holiday has been filled with ghosts and monsters ready to dole out punishment to those who need it. The Fright Before Christmas will delve into the folklore of Krampus and his friends with the elf-like tomten and the goblinesque Karakoncolas. The Belsnickel is ready to hit us with his switch of sticks and Gryla may drag you back to her mountain lair. And watch out for the Yule Cat ready to pounce!" Jeff Belanger is one of the most visible and prolific researchers of folklore and legends today. A natural storyteller, he's the award-winning, Emmy-nominated host, writer, and producer of the New England Legends series on PBS and Amazon Prime, and is the author of over a dozen books (published in six languages). The Winter Solstice is coming! Let's talk about the longest night, AKA the shortest day, and how the modern celebration of Yule relates to its more ancient origins. We're also discussing some pagan mythology, including the Oak and Holly Kings, and then diving into the scarier folktales associated with this season, like Krampus, the Yule Cat and Gryla and her Yule Lads! But first, I have some things to say about the New Moon in Sagittarius and how its energy, paired with that of the Winter Solstice and the end of the year, makes us all think a little more passionately about what we want our next year to look like - and how that's pushed me to plant my own new seed. This week we are getting into the Christmas spirit in true O&C fashion. This year we will talk Icelandic Folklore and the horrific crimes of Ronald Gene Simmons. We hope you have a Yule Cat, Yule Lads, Gryla free holiday season!
Hey Campers, we have a delightful mischievous yuletide topic for this week's episode. We will be discussing the holiday history and classic poem of the Yule Lads. Both Kimmy and Ryan start by making it very clear they can't pronounce a single yule lad name, why milk straight from the tap is the best, and how the yule lads are the result of Gryla's infidelity with the 7 dwarves. We hope you enjoy this episode of Aloreing, and remember campers get it straight from the tap, and that it's just a prank bros... Oh.. and Gryla is definitely cheating on her husband. . . . WANT MORE ALOREING?
