Réécoutez le Global Techno de Tough Waves by Fernanda Martins with Guest Martyn Hare du samedi 1er juin 2024
We premiere a track from techno legend today, Paul Birken. Birken has put together an analogue techno bomb for Gombocs first release on wax. Paul Birken has been putting out wonky techno classic's for the best part of 25 years. Release's such as ‘Speaker Freakin” & ‘Surfin' Superior' helped launch his 12 inches into the hands of some of techno's most coveted and technical DJ's. Paul still receives heavy support from the likes of Sunil Sharpe, Jerome Hill & Bas Mooy. More recent releases on ‘Mord', ‘Earwiggle' & ‘Don't' have helped solidify Birken's name to a newer generation. Birken still holds down his classic style of hectic, machine driven style of bleep techno. This release marks the first release on 12 inch, for Argentinian label, Gomboc. The label have been throwing out, high octane techno since 2017 and have been home to artists such as Lars Huismann, Nico Moreno, Umwelt, D. Carbone, Joe Farr, Takaaki Itoh, Lag & more. Birken shares the release with some of techno's most influential names for the Gombocs first vinyl release. The release will be home to Thomas P. Heckmann, Jerome Hill, Martyn Hare & Paul Birken himself. “Four legendary artists that influenced not only us but probably thousands of people. With their own signature sound, each track resembles a unique style. From Acid, to Rave and just pure machinery communication.” Birken's track, Poaching Pickled Parcels, is a distorted piece of machine paradise. Screaming synths lye at the forefront of the track while a pounding a kick drum does its damage. The track is complete with shuffling analogue percussion that simmers in and out of sections of the track. A true hectic piece of hectic dance music, from the king of mayhem. Interview : Virtual Underground: How has this all started for you? Ekin: My first experience with music started when I discovered my sister's old cassette player. She was listening to Limp Bizkit. I remember my first song was to Take a look around. Then I discovered other types of metal and started playing bass guitar. I was never into fancy solos. I always liked the idea of being the supporting pillar of the band and improved myself in every genre in bass. Even admitted to Berklee for a 5 week bass performance program. Before pandemic I was playing regularly with my band in a local metal bar called Dorock. Being the youngest member of the band and my tendency to use distortion earned me my nickname Basstard. Then in Berlin, Berghain to be precise, I was drawn to the vast world of techno and the limitless possibilities of sound design. That's when I started experimenting with my first controller. Virtual Underground: Where do you generally draw your inspiration from? Ekin: Music is how I express myself. I always felt myself full of emotions that I don't know how to let out. I had a turbulent childhood and preferred music over people. I was very good with maths and physics and could see the pattern in a song effortlessly unlike relationships. They were very complicated for me and emotions were like randomized functions that ruined every equation in my head. In my sets and compositions I try to reflect my way of seeing the world and how it's cynical, confusing and dark. Virtual Underground: Could you describe your music selection and mixing process? Ekin: I like the productions from the 2000s and 1990s. I work as an electronics engineer and while working I dive in the vast archives and select the tunes that intrigues me. I list them according to bpm and key. In this set I acted extra ruthless and selected some hard hitting tracks from C mantle, Headless horseman and Martyn Hare and tried to build a dystopian and intimidating atmosphere. Virtual Underground: Which software/hardware did you use for this set? Ekin: I used Traktor Pro 2 software and Traktor S5 controller. Virtual Underground: Could you tell us more about snatchers? Ekin: Snatchers is our İstanbul based imprint/label/collective for electronic music and more sound disciplines. It is a place for young musicians to grow and share their works founded by @omeerata. It is a non-profit organization as we say in snatchers we are in it for the music :) Virtual Underground: Any next plans? Ekin:I started learning Ableton and hopefully I will release my own tracks soon. Also I started digging records from 1990s and my ultimate goal is to expand my musical arsenal :) Follow and support Ekin @ingeniousbasstard

Unrestrained by allegiance to any one particular path of production, Martyn’s style simply refuses to be pigeonholed. His genre-splicing, eclectic blend is carried over into his DJ sets, in which he carefully combines the subtly soulful with the downright dirty to always get the dancefloor moving.Martyn started club djing in 1998, but it was while living in Leeds, UK, that he promoted his own events ‘Audio Science’, and it was through these nights that the world got its first taste of Martyn’s own dub plates, which grabbed the attention of a number of labels including Glen Wilson and Mike Humphries’ Punish imprint and Ben Long’s Potential Recordingz. It was Martyn’s first two releases on Potential (‘Bitchin’ and ‘Hare of the Dog EP’) that earned him worldwide respect, scoring a “Top 5 Tunes of the Moment” review in Ministry magazine and numerous plays on international radio.Martyn grew with this success and used it as a foundation to push further forward, going on to issue major releases on Tronic, Recycled Loops, Planet Rhythm and Naked Lunch Records, as well as managing and producing for his own labels ‘Tremors’ and the now legendary ‘Emetic’. Having played numerous sessions for BBC Radio 1 and charting number 13 in John Peels last ever Festive 50, Martyn Hare now DJ’s and performs his Classics_Live sets across the world, and with two critically acclaimed albums under his belt, Martyn Hare is at the top of his game.
