A peça "Reparations Baby!", escrita e encenada por Marco Mendonça, toca no tema das reparações históricas de Portugal aos países de língua portuguesa, passando pelo racismo e a discriminação dos afro-descendentes utilizando o humor, a frontalidade e a compaixão para fazer reflectir os espectadores.   Em 2023, aquando a visita de Lula da Silva a Portugal que marcava então presença na cerimónia de celebração dos 49 anos do 25 de Abril, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa falou pela primeira vez em reparações históricas e essas palavras despertaram no actor, dramaturgo e encenador moçambicano Marco Mendonça o interesse pelo tema em Portugal.  Já na esfera política, nomeadamente após o Presidente português ter dito um ano mais tarde que Portugal devia pagar o que deve aos países africanos de língua portuguesa após séculos de escravidão e exploração, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa foi apelidado de traidor da pátria. Estas considerações políticas aliadas a vários movimentos por antigas potências coloniais como a França ou a Alemanha de reparações culturais, nomeadamente através da devolução de obras de arte, levaram Marco Mendonça a escrever e encenar a peça “Reparations Baby!” para o Teatro Nacional D.Maria II, onde esta temática é transformada num jogo televisivo ao estilo de “Quem quer ser milionário” com um painel de concorrentes exclusivamente afro-descendentes "A ideia de ser um game show pareceu-me fazer bastante sentido, porque é um contexto em que tanto temos uma componente de entretenimento muito forte música, luzes, todo o aparato televisivo, mas ao mesmo tempo também temos uma componente muito forte que é informativa e das curiosidades dos factos, da pesquisa, da partilha de informação. Quis aliar essas duas coisas ao tema da reparação histórica, que era um tema que eu já queria trabalhar há muito tempo", afirmou o encenador. No palco três concorrentes afro-descendentes respondem a perguntas que vão desde a história da colonização, a figuras da escravidão a polémicas actuais como apropriação cultural nas redes sociais. Nos intervalos deste concurso, uma equipa de figuras brancas encoraja o desempenho dos concorrentes, monstrando como as boas intenções estão muitas vezes ligadas ao ganho pessoal. Ao longo do jogo, as personagens vão mostrando as suas convicções, mas também as suas experiências face ao racismo e ao preconceito. "Era muito importante para mim focar-me nas personagens e não torná-las bidimensionais no sentido de pôr as pessoas brancas a pensarem sobre este tema desta maneira e as pessoas negras pensam desta maneira sobre este tema? Não, isso seria pouco verosímil, porque efectivamente as pessoas têm relações muito diferentes com este tema e com tudo o que sejam discriminações nas vivências em Portugal", indicou Marco Mendonça. As reparações históricas das potências colonizadoras aos países africanos foi o mote este ano da reunião da União Africana em Fevereiro, na Etiópia, e tal como os chefes de Estado africanos, Marco Mendonça considera que o reconhecimento público dos séculos de exploração e ocupação é o primeiro passo para o restabelecimento da História dos dois lados do Equador. "Eu acho que a primeira reparação e mais importante reparação neste momento é interna. Eu acho que Portugal, enquanto país, enquanto povo, enquanto cultura, deve olhar para si próprio, ver-se ao espelho e perceber o quão absurdas são todas as desigualdades que se vivem no país e o quanto é preciso assumir uma responsabilidade de forma formal", concluiu Marco Mendonça. Esta peça esteve em cartaz no Teatro Variedades, em Lisboa, durante o mês de Julho tendo tipo apresentações noutras cidades portuguesas. Deverá agora continuar a ser apresentada em diferentes teatros, não havendo para já mais representações previstas.

Fallout from the Karen Read Retrial continues, focusing on Boston Police Commissioner Cox's statements regarding Officer Kelly Dever and a strongly worded letter from Attorney Alan Jackson asking she be added to the Brady List. Officer Dever testified in the Karen Read Retrial, stating that her initial observations to the FBI about Burkowitz and Higgins in the Canton PD sallyport garage were a "false memory." She claimed she didn't recall the Commissioner telling her to "do the right thing," despite previously telling the defense he said that to her. Commissioner Cox denied knowing Officer Dever was associated with the Karen Read case and that he influenced her testimony, despite her acknowledging a meeting with him where he offered support. He stated he "encourages" many officers. Karen's Defense Attorney, Alan Jackson, sent a formal letter to Commissioner Cox, requesting that Officer Kelly Dever be included in the Brady database. This is due to her changed testimony and "false memory" claim, which he argues irreparably compromises her credibility and reliability as a law enforcement officer. Jackson asserts that if she lied, it's perjury, and if she truly suffers from false memories, she's unfit to serve. Jackson's letter warns that failure to disclose this information would be a constitutional violation, potentially leading to severe sanctions, including the dismissal of any cases Officer Dever is involved in, even post-prosecution, if this information is not disclosed to the defense. Last Night at School Committee – July 9, 2025 The only Boston School Committee meeting of the summer opened with a goodbye to a leaving member, included a summary of the Superintendent's progress, and ended with more questions than answers. Here's what happened last night: The meeting began with another goodbye to Committee Member Lima Barbosa who previously announced that she will be leaving the school committee for another professional opportunity. Chair Robinson commended her work on the committee and wished her well in the future. Of note, there is still no word on the process for filling her position. The meeting included votes on various grants in the district as well as an ask from the district to ensure that the leased land permits for the Boys and Girls Martin Richard Foundation Field House Project were legally approved. The votes were approved unanimously.  During the public comment portion of the meeting, there were 10 public speakers that advocated on behalf of different issues. There was a wide range of comments last night, including more testimony about the closing of the Dever, achievement gaps for English Language Learners, support for bus monitors, exam school policy concerns, and significant issues at the Mel King Academy.  There were also several speakers focused on the poor support offered to students and families in need. One parent spoke to the cumbersome process of school placement related to the student's IEP, and another parent testified about the district's failure to adequately assist her medically-disabled son. Much of this testimony was heartwrenching, illustrating some significant gaps in the BPS' support for students with unique needs.  Over the past six months, we have been closely following how the federal government's cuts could impact the district. Last night, Superintendent Skipper offered some insight into resource allocation for next year and beyond. Superintendent Skipper stated that, as of now, no positions will be cut in ‘25-'26 due to funding cuts from the Trump Administration. However, the Superintendent did note that certain title funding may be in jeopardy that could strip away professional development opportunities as well as English Language Learner programming. This will be an issue we continue to monitor.  At the last meeting, the School Committee outlined their evaluation of Superintendent Mary Skipper, and they deemed that Superintendent Skipper was "proficient." During this meeting, committee members unanimously voted to approve their evaluation of the Superintendent, yet certain committee members questioned some aspects of the district's progress in terms of quantifiable data. Member Cardet-Hernandez inquired about how data was used to inform committee members' decisions, specifically in terms of graduation rate, enrollment numbers, and achievement gaps. In response, the Superintendent stated that she would provide members with “memos” when this data becomes available.  Here at the Shah Foundation, we decided to conduct our own analysis of the committee members' evaluations, and we found a few notable pieces of data. First, across 48 written pages and more than 9,000 words of evaluation on the four standards, there were fewer than 50 data points cited. Second, two of the members did not cite a single specific number in their evaluation of the superintendent's performance. Third, just two members used more than 10 specific data points. Clearly, quantifiable data is not a crucial aspect of the members' evaluation process. With respect to media coverage of the evaluation, the Boston Globe ran a headline stating that “BPS Superintendent Skipper receives high marks in latest evaluation.” However, this attention grabbing title fails to adequately dissect and uncover the truth behind the committee's analysis. In the body of the article, the Globe notes that “progress remains uneven across schools” and much of the analysis from members echoes the same. Learn more about your ad choices. Karen Read Trial Day 25 Recap: Defense Witness Turns on Them, Alleges Defense Member Threatened Her! In a dramatic day inside the Norfolk Superior Court, the Karen Read murder trial took a turn that no one saw coming—when the defense's own witnesses began pushing back. From allegations of witness coercion to a controversial dog bite theory, Day 25 of the trial was packed with explosive revelations and intense courtroom exchanges. Former Canton Police Officer Kelly Dever delivered one of the most impactful testimonies of the trial so far. Dever told the jury that Karen Read's defense team pressured her to testify to a story she knew wasn't true—that she saw Higgins and Berkowitz alone in the garage with Read's SUV. When she refused, she claims they threatened her with perjury. In open court, she directed the accusation directly at defense attorney Alan Jackson. This wasn't a moment of confusion—it was a pointed, emotional standoff that put the defense's tactics under the microscope. Then came Jonathan Diamandis, a friend of former State Trooper Michael Proctor. He confirmed the authenticity of Proctor's now-infamous group chat texts, which were laced with crude, insulting, and misogynistic remarks about Karen Read. But the texts didn't say what the defense needed—they didn't mention any planted evidence, altered reports, or a cover-up. Just hostility. Just bias. And just as easily turned against the defense's credibility as the prosecution's. In the afternoon, the defense called Dr. Marie Russell, a forensic pathologist, to bolster their theory that John O'Keefe's injuries were more consistent with a dog attack than a car crash. But her testimony lacked any physical evidence—no dog DNA, no bite mark match, and no autopsy. The prosecution wasted no time in pointing out that her conclusions were drawn from photos, not science.
