In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, hosts Dan and Jason discuss their holiday experiences, family traditions, and the challenges of hunting during the winter season. They share personal stories about chasing big bucks, the impact of poaching on deer populations, and the joys of shed hunting with family. The conversation reflects on the changing perspectives of hunting, emphasizing the importance of experiences over mere numbers. Takeaways: Family traditions play a significant role in hunting experiences. Hunting can be a bonding activity for families, especially with children. Chasing big bucks can lead to both success and regret. Poaching has a detrimental impact on local deer populations. Shed hunting is a fun family activity that fosters appreciation for nature. The experience of hunting is more valuable than the number of deer killed. Education gained from hunting can enhance future hunting experiences. The joy of hunting can come from watching others succeed, especially children. Changing perspectives on hunting can lead to more fulfilling experiences. It's important to balance the pursuit of big game with the enjoyment of the hunt itself. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Cutting Edge Japan Business Show By Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
Why is "recruit and retain" becoming the central talent strategy in Japan? Japan faces a demographic crunch: too few young people can meet employer demand, and this shortage has persisted for years. Since 2015, the shrinking youth population has pushed competition for early-career talent higher. With a smaller talent pool, every hiring decision carries more risk, and every resignation hits harder. Turnover among new recruits has started climbing again. A few years ago, more than 40% of new recruits left after training; the figure now sits around 34%, and it may rise further. Companies spend heavily to train early-career hires, so losing them soon after onboarding forces employers to pay twice: once to train and again to replace. Mini-summary: Japan's talent pool keeps tightening, and early departures turn training spend into replacement cost. How does the traditional April intake model still shape recruiting in Japan? Major firms still run large-scale April intakes at the start of the financial year, with uniformed new recruits seated in rows. That model remains visible and important, but it no longer tells the whole story. As demand for young workers intensifies, companies can't rely only on a predictable, annual graduate cycle. Mid-career hiring of younger workers is moving into the spotlight. In practical terms, HR teams shift from one big annual intake to continuous recruiting throughout the year. As the labour market grows more fluid, firms compete for talent in real time—not just once a year. Mini-summary: The April intake remains, but year-round mid-career hiring becomes strategically central. Why will mid-career poaching intensify, and what does that change for employers? Younger employees increasingly know their market value, and recruiters actively scout them. As a result, more young workers will likely move jobs more frequently. Recruiters lean into poaching because high volume can make the model profitable even when individual fees stay modest. Expect a "free-agent" rhythm where people recycle through roles every two to three years. That churn reinforces itself: recruiters place the same cohort repeatedly, younger workers normalize frequent moves, and employers feel instability as a default condition. If you want stability, you must treat retention as a core strategy—not an afterthought. Mini-summary: Poaching becomes systematic because volume pays, and frequent moves become a market norm. When should retention start, and who should it target? Retention starts earlier than many leaders assume—right when a candidate says "yes." Accepting an offer triggers second thoughts for some people, especially when competing messages, family opinions, or pressure from a current employer shows up. So retention doesn't only apply to current employees. It also applies to new hires who haven't started yet. Stay in contact, reinforce the decision, and remove the space where doubt grows. Mini-summary: Retention begins at "yes," not on day one, because buyer's remorse can derail hires before they start. How should employers respond to counteroffers and the rising cost of replacement? Incumbent employers will counteroffer more aggressively because replacing people costs more than paying to keep them. Don't wait for a resignation to act. Increase pay and improve conditions before people decide to leave, rather than matching numbers after they quit. Replacement costs stack fast: lost time, reduced productivity, internal friction, recruiting effort, and onboarding load. If you wait until resignation to respond, you often choose the most expensive option overall. Mini-summary: Proactive pay and retention reduce costly churn; reactive counteroffers arrive too late and drain productivity. What is different about onboarding mid-career hires in Japan, especially in large firms? Mid-career hires arrive one at a time, not in large cohorts. In big firms, HR teams typically manage onboarding, paperwork, and training, but routine can hide weak execution. When teams run a process on autopilot for years, quality slips without anyone noticing. Treat onboarding like something you continuously inspect. Review how you bring people in, and ask recent hires what worked and what didn't. In a retention fight, onboarding becomes a front-line capability—not a box to tick. Mini-summary: Large firms need to audit onboarding quality, because autopilot processes can quietly undermine retention. What do smaller firms need to change to retain mid-career hires? Smaller firms often provide only the basics: payroll setup, insurance, a desk, and a phone. That approach doesn't protect retention. Busy leaders sometimes avoid investing time in a new hire, but that "time-saving" move often backfires. Under-support raises the risk of early departure—right when the hire matters most. Owners and senior leaders need to show up more than they used to. Treat talent like gold because the market won't supply easy replacements. Mini-summary: Small firms must increase leader involvement, because minimal onboarding drives expensive churn. What does a "well organised and welcoming" onboarding programme look like? Build a full daily programme in advance: briefings, self-study, mentoring, and training. New hires watch for signals of professionalism, and a clear plan sends a powerful one. That first impression shapes whether they see the company as a stable, well-run home. Design onboarding templates and reuse them. A template lowers friction, reduces randomness, and makes each new hire's experience more consistent over time. Do the design work upfront and you'll improve execution—and retention—later. Mini-summary: Planned daily onboarding and reusable templates strengthen first impressions and improve retention by making quality visible. Nepal is home to some of the world's most iconic wildlife — from tigers, rhinos, and elephants to lesser-known species like pangolins and medicinal orchids. Yet behind its breathtaking biodiversity lies a complex struggle against wildlife poaching, illegal wildlife trade, and habitat loss. In this episode of the Think Wildlife Podcast, we speak with Kumar Paudel, founder and director of Greenhood Nepal, one of the nation's leading conservation organizations working to combat wildlife crime and promote community conservation across the Himalayas.Kumar shares his inspiring journey from a childhood in the mountains of Nepal to leading national efforts in biodiversity conservation. Through his work with Greenhood Nepal, he has helped transform the country's conservation landscape — from early advocacy against poaching and corruption to the establishment of community-based monitoring networks and policy reform. Under his leadership, Nepal became the first nation to achieve zero poaching of rhinos, elephants, and tigers, an achievement rooted in strong enforcement, military protection, and deep community engagement. The conversation delves into the evolution of Nepal's conservation success. Kumar discusses how community intelligence and local anti-poaching networks have become vital in protecting wildlife across national parks and buffer zones. Yet, he warns that while attention often centers on charismatic megafauna like tigers and rhinos, smaller and lesser-known species such as pangolins, tortoises, and orchids face rising threats from illegal wildlife trade and unsustainable harvesting.Greenhood Nepal's work along the China–Nepal border provides critical insights into cross-border wildlife trade networks, revealing the motivations behind trafficking and empowering enforcement agencies through training, data sharing, and behavioral change campaigns. Kumar also highlights their pioneering research on orchid conservation, mapping over 500 native species — including more than 100 medicinally important orchids — and developing sustainable management plans that align with CITES compliance. The discussion also explores pangolin conservation, where Greenhood has led community outreach, identified priority habitats, and hosted Nepal's first Pangolin Conservation Roundtable, catalyzing national policy action. Kumar explains how the team's on-ground efforts — from habitat restoration to education and enforcement — have shaped the future of biodiversity management in Nepal.Beyond enforcement, Kumar reflects on the importance of compassion and understanding. His most memorable conservation experience came from visiting prisons and speaking with wildlife offenders, gaining firsthand insights into the socio-economic pressures that drive poaching and wildlife trade. His reflections underscore that sustainable conservation depends on addressing poverty, awareness, and opportunity — not just punishment. We also revisit Nepal's remarkable success in tiger conservation, where populations have nearly tripled between 2010 and 2022, and discuss emerging challenges such as human–wildlife conflict. As Nepal continues to balance conservation and development, Kumar calls for stronger investment in coexistence strategies, habitat restoration, and community-led solutions. This episode offers an in-depth look at the intertwined issues of wildlife crime, community conservation, and biodiversity preservation in one of the world's richest ecological regions. Tune in to learn how Nepal's story of resilience, innovation, and collaboration continues to inspire the global conservation movement.About the HostAnish Banerjee is an early career ecologist, with a MSc in Ecology, Evolution and Conservation from Imperial College London. Why Client Poaching Isn't the Real Problem in Your Studio (and What To Fix Instead)Hosted by: Christa Gurka, PT, OCS | Fit Biz StrategiesIf you've ever panicked because a client followed an instructor out the door… or you've worried that an instructor is “stealing” clients… this episode is going to flip that narrative on its head.Inside our boutique fitness and wellness studios, client poaching feels personal — but it's actually a symptom of deeper operational issues. And the good news? You can fix them.In today's episode, Christa breaks down why poaching happens, what's really driving client loyalty (hint: it's not what you think), and how to build a brand-first, team-centered system that keeps clients AND instructors loyal to your studio — not just one star player.Whether you run a Pilates studio, private practice PT clinic, yoga studio, or any wellness brick-and-mortar, this is a MUST-listen as you head into 2026.✨ What You'll Learn in This EpisodeWhy “client poaching” is not an instructor problem — it's a systems problemThe #1 hiring mistake most studio owners make (and how it leads to client loss later)How unclear onboarding creates blurred boundaries, confusion, and client attachment to individualsWhy clients start identifying instructors — not your studio — as the “product”How to flip your culture from star instructors to one cohesive teamWhat healthy studio ecosystems look like (and what broken ones look like)The systems Christa used at Pilates in the Grove to maintain brand loyaltyExactly what expectations, policies, and boundaries need to be in placeHow to create a culture where clients feel connected to the brand, not one personThe essential contracts every studio should have (even with ICs!)Leadership questions to ask yourself before blaming an instructorWhy 2026 must be the year you build or rebuild your foundations
Every year, hundreds of rhinos are killed for their horns, which are trafficked mainly to Asia for use in traditional medicine. As part of the "G20 Heritage Projects", a large-scale campaign was launched in mid-July in South Africa to help save the rhino from extinction. The "Rhino Renaissance Campaign" brings together advanced surveillance technology, the involvement of local communities and radical conservation measures – including dehorning – to combat poaching. When one thinks of poaching, the mind often turns to Africa—snares, and people involved in the illegal bushmeat trade. Few would think of poaching occurring in the United States of America. Boone and Crockett Club President Tony Schoonen and researcher Jon Gassett join Robbie to talk about the Club's new Poach and Pay program. This enormous undertaking to understand poaching in the U.S. revealed a massive “dark number” of poachers—and what that means for the landscapes and lifestyles we love. It's an incredibly fascinating episode where you'll learn the data and science behind the true impact of poaching in the U.S. today, what motivates it, and what steps can be taken to combat its staggering scale. This week's Hot Topics: A diesel emissions case delay in Wyoming may signal shifting federal enforcement. Plus: a rare fatal bear attack in Arkansas, a $1.4B poaching crisis, and California ranchers struggle against surging wolf depredation. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka ‘BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Federal Diesel 'Delete' Prosecutions, Arkansas Bear Tragedy, and the Hidden Cost of Poaching and California's Wolf Crisis Wyoming Diesel 'Delete' Case Delay Signals Possible Shift in Federal Prosecution According to the Cowboy State Daily, The federal case against Levi Krech, a Gillette man accused of tampering with diesel truck emissions systems, has been delayed, sparking hopes that the federal government might be backing off from aggressively pursuing "delete" cases. Krech faces felony charges under the Clean Air Act, but his defense attorney believes the delay could signal a shift in the enforcement approach under the new administration. Krech was initially scheduled to plead guilty on September 11, but a request for more time to review changes in laws and regulations led to a rescheduled hearing. Krech, who owns Unique Performance, a diesel shop in Gillette, had been involved in the "delete" tuning business—removing emissions systems from diesel trucks, a practice that was once considered legal in Wyoming. His case follows a broader national trend where small business owners in the diesel tuning industry are facing increasing scrutiny. Krech's defense attorney argues that federal prosecutions targeting individuals like him, who cannot afford the lengthy legal battles, are unfair and disproportionate, especially as emissions systems can often be costly to repair. Krech's case also stands out due to his personal history. Once a troubled teenager involved in theft, Krech turned his life around after completing a rigorous probation program, eventually starting his own business. His story reflects the potential for individuals to rehabilitate, raising questions about whether the federal government should continue treating diesel emissions tampering as a criminal act rather than a civil issue. In the broader context, some lawmakers and environmental advocates argue that "deletes" contribute to significant air pollution, which harms p ublic health. However, others contend that federal actions against small business owners in industries like diesel tuning are overreaching and fail to consider the practical realities of running a small business. With the case delay and discussions in Congress over the fairness of federal enforcement, Krech and others in the industry are holding out hope that a more balanced approach will prevail. On September 3, the elderly man was working on his tractor by the side of a road in the Mulberry Mountain area when he was mauled by the bear. His son witnessed the attack and was able to intervene, helping to free his father from the animal. Despite being airlifted to a hospital and receiving intensive care, the man's injuries were too severe, and he passed away on September 14. Arkansas Game and Fish Commission officials confirmed the tragic news, noting that the bear involved was likely a yearling weighing 70 to 80 pounds. The bear was swiftly located and euthanized by authorities. Following the incident, wildlife officials conducted tests on the bear, confirming it tested negative for rabies and distemper. This attack is considered “unheard of” by local authorities, with officials stating they hadn't encountered a black bear attacking a human in Arkansas in over 25 years. This rare and unprovoked attack has shaken the local community, with the family remembering the man as a beloved father and grandfather who was doing what he loved—working on his land—when the tragic event occurred. Despite the high financial and ecological toll, more than 95% of wildlife poaching incidents go undetected. The study, which aimed to quantify poaching's scope, found that poachers face minimal penalties, making it an unappealing deterrent. This lack of enforcement contributes to a massive loss of wildlife, hunting license revenue, and conservation funds. The research highlights that poaching is a significant contributor to the financial loss of big-game animals, such as whitetail deer and elk. For example, the restitution cost for a trophy elk can reach up to $30,000. With poaching detection rates as low as 4%, millions of dollars in fines and replacement costs go uncollected. Additionally, this unreported poaching undermines public trust in wildlife management and depletes resources intended for conservation efforts. Researchers used criminological methods to analyze poaching motivations, ranging from trophy hunting to financial gain, and concluded that increasing detection rates and harsher penalties are key strategies to reduce poaching. The study also recommends raising awareness among ethical hunters to help combat the stigma and promote the message that poaching harms everyone, not just wildlife enthusiasts. This year alone, Paul Roen, a Sierra County Supervisor and ranch manager, has seen wolves kill at least 37 head of cattle on his ranch. Roen describes it as an “absolute massacre,” and county sheriff Mike Fisher agrees, calling the losses “unprecedented” for Sierra Valley. But the damage doesn't end with numbers — it's the emotional toll of losing livestock in such a traumatic way that no compensation check can replace. In total, wolves have been confirmed to have killed 73 cattle in the region as of September 2025, but Roen suspects the real number is higher, with some carcasses left unrecognizable. While the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) works to deter the wolves using non-lethal methods, ranchers like Roen argue these efforts are falling short. The wolves are relentless, killing animals of all sizes, maiming livestock, and often leaving behind nothing but remnants of carcasses. To make matters worse, the protocols for proving wolf kills are strict, leaving many depredations uncounted. Ranchers have also expressed frustration with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife's strategy, which has involved placing food at wolf dens, a tactic Roen believes is ineffective. Ranchers aren't just asking for compensation; they want solutions. The California Cattlemen's Association (CCA) is calling for the delisting of the gray wolf, citing the rapid increase in wolf numbers and the devastating effects on local cattle producers. They point to bipartisan support for this action, both during the Obama and Trump administrations. With wolves now present in areas like Sierra Valley in large packs, ranchers and county officials are demanding more action. Roen's plea is simple: “We are not going to co-habitate with these animals. They have to be removed.” For ranchers, the question is no longer just about numbers or compensation. It's about whether California will step in to protect the livelihoods of those who provide food for the state—and the nation. First half: my take on the Ryan Lampers situation—innocent until proven guilty—and the bigger pattern I've seen for decades in guiding: economic incentives, ego, and the short-game mindset that pushes people into bad decisions. Play the long game. Be transparent. If you wouldn't do it with a drone over your shoulder, don't do it.Second half: Colorado updates from the last 10–12 days. Elk are generally lower and around water; bugling where densities are decent. Archery conditions look good until pressure kicks them around. Bears were tough: chokecherry/serviceberry largely dropped or dried on sun-exposed slopes. Best action was near private borders with water and acorns, or go high-alpine if you can't access those edges. If this helps, subscribe on YouTube/Spotify/Apple. More bear-defense content coming soon. Send Crystal a text letting her know what you thought about the show! This season of Forces for Nature is extra special- all of the guests are participants in the Emerging Wildlife Conservation Leaders (EWCL) program, a global network of conservationists who are pushing the boundaries of how people and wildlife can thrive together. As EWCL celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, I'm spotlighting some of the inspiring individuals whose work is shaping the future of conservation. To kick things off, I sat down with Dr. Hugo Pereira, a field veterinarian with the Mozambique Wildlife Alliance. Hugo's job might sound like it's all about the animals- from darting elephants, to rescuing orphaned rhinos, and rehabilitating pangolins- but as he makes clear, conservation is just as much about people. In Mozambique, communities and wildlife share the same land, which means Hugo's work often starts with listening to frustrations, building trust, and co-creating solutions that reduce conflict and create opportunity. And while you may never lift a rhino calf into a helicopter or pull an elephant out of the mud, you probably do encounter your own version of human–wildlife conflict whether it's deer eating your garden, coyotes prowling your neighborhood, or simply the daily choices of how your community shares space with nature. Hugo's “people-first” approach shows us that coexistence starts with compassion, creativity, and persistence and the principles he lives by in the savannas of Mozambique are the same ones that can guide us in our own backyards.HighlightsThe adrenaline and precision behind rescuing a rhino calf orphaned by poachers. How Hugo and the Mozambique Wildlife Alliance adapt with creativity in the field to save animals in crisis. Why a “people-first” approach is essential for reducing human-wildlife conflict and creating space for coexistence. What YOU Can DoVolunteer your skills to support local zoos or conservation institutions.Share conservation stories on social media. Spreading the right information helps raise awareness and attract wider support. Donate to conservation organizations.Educate yourself about organizations in your own area: Who they are, why they do what they do, and what would happen if they didn't exist. This awareness builds empathy and informed support.Get informed about local wildlife and why they're present. Understanding why deer, coyotes, or other species show up in neighborhoods helps people move from frustration to tolerance.Modify your environment to prevent conflict:Build or adjust fences to keep animals out of gardens or crops.Use deterrents like flashlights, noises, or scarecrows, depending on the species.Recognize “tolerance” as an important step: we don't have to love the wildlife around us, but learning to tolerate them is the bridge toward coexistence.Want a free guide to help you become a force for nature? Mexican cartels have expanded far beyond traditional drug trafficking, turning illegal poaching into a lucrative revenue stream. With their vast smuggling networks already in place, cartels realized they could profit from the trafficking of endangered species and animal parts—everything from jaguar pelts and sea turtle eggs to exotic birds and shark fins. These products fetch high prices on the black market, particularly in Asian markets where demand for traditional medicine, luxury goods, and rare cuisine fuels a steady supply chain. By exploiting the same routes used for narcotics, cartels can move wildlife contraband with relative ease, diversifying their criminal portfolios while taking advantage of weak enforcement and widespread corruption. The brutality cartels bring to the drug trade now mirrors their approach to poaching: systematic, violent, and deeply embedded in local economies. Communities in rural Mexico are often coerced into participating, either by supplying animals or turning a blind eye under threat. In some areas, poaching profits now rival or even surpass local drug revenues, with cartels using the money to fund weapons, bribe officials, and maintain territorial control. This shift has not only escalated the ecological crisis in Mexico but also cemented cartels as dominant players in global wildlife trafficking, demonstrating their ability to adapt and monetize virtually any illicit market. To contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/mexican-cartels-are-expanding-into-wildlife-crime

Ever wondered why traditional recruiters seem more interested in their commission than in finding you the right person? Ryan Hogan did too—and it bugged him enough to build an entirely different model. In this conversation with Cam and Otis, the Navy Reservist and serial entrepreneur shares how scaling Hunt A Killer to a $205M phenomenon exposed him to the broken incentives plaguing the recruiting industry. "I'm an anti-recruiter recruiter all day long," Ryan admits with a laugh, explaining why the commission-based headhunter approach just doesn't work for growing businesses. From the controversial reality that "your next best hire is probably already employed" to the magic of turning recruiting into a true sales and marketing process, Ryan breaks down why finding great talent is actually a lot like hunting. He shares the exact process his team uses to create marketing materials for jobs that actually attract the right people—not just the available ones.Whether you're struggling to find talent for your growing business or just curious about a better approach to building teams, Ryan's flat-fee, embedded recruiting model offers a refreshing alternative to the status quo. Plus, he explains why understanding a candidate's drivers is the key to convincing them to even consider your opportunity.More About Ryan:Ryan Hogan is a Navy Reservist, serial entrepreneur, and the co-founder and CEO of Talent Harbor, a recruiting-as-a-service company helping growth businesses find world-class talent—without the broken incentives of traditional headhunters. After scaling Hunt A Killer from an idea to a $205M global phenomenon, Ryan experienced firsthand how ridiculous the recruiting industry was. That challenge became his next mission. With a deep belief that recruiting needs to be a core competency for all businesses—not an afterthought – Ryan built Talent Harbor to serve growing B2B businesses, especially those running on EOS. His team replaces antiquated commission-driven models with a flat-fee, embedded recruiting service focused on fit, process, and long-term results. Watch the YouTube version of this episode HEREAre you looking for some advice for strengthening your skills as a lawyer? In this episode of the Maximum Lawyer Guild Live Show, host Tyson Mutrux leads a dynamic discussion on lost leads in customer service, the top interview question job candidates should ask, and the ethics of employee poaching in tech.Using a training video of an initial client call, Tyson talks about lost leads in customer service and how firms can improve communication and establish processes with clients. It is important to know when to simply sign up a client as opposed to trying to get every piece of information. For this caller, they just needed help and the employee was focused on typing everything down, pressing for photos and using escalating behaviour. In contentious situations where callers are distressed, it is best to let them speak and provide a comforting environment where the person feels heard and the employee shows empathy. Tyson delves into questions that candidates should ask to uncover real company values. One of the questions is focused on having the manager describe the kind of person that should not work for the firm. For a manager, this will catch you off guard. But for a prospective candidate, this will allow you to understand how the company sees themselves and the kind of traits and attributes they hold close and value. It will also give you clarity on if it is the type of firm you are wanting to work for.Listen in to learn more!04:38 Lessons from the Lost Lead 09:04 The #1 Job Candidate Question12:36 Poaching in Tech: Meta vs. OpenAI 16:47 Jaguar's Rebranding Flop21:08 LLaMA AI Update & Live DemoTune in to today's episode and checkout the full show notes here.
