Spoek Mathambo/Nthato Mokgata is a musician and filmmaker. He's a master of collaboration, with roots tracing all the way back to the seminal The Fantastic Kill with Watkin Tudor Jones and Sibot, which lead to projects like Sweat.X, Playdoe, Moleke Mbembe, Fantasma, Batuk, and his most recent collaborations with Laliboi. I'm definitely leaving some stuff out, and that's not even to mention his personal catalogue of albums, but the point is that the man has kept himself busy. Not just with making music. In 2014, he worked on a documentary called Future Sound of Mzansi that is, to this day, one of the best explorations of South African electronic music. He's worked on a number of documentaries before and since, and has delved into a number of facets of filmmaking. Most recently, he was a writer and director for the "Surf Sangoma" episode of Disney's Kizazi Moto animated anthology series. We get into all of the above as well as learn about some of the pitfalls of working with international labels, explore the benefits and hurdles of modern music distribution, and discuss why he feels like there are still musical magic tricks from SA music history that haven't been explored fully. Enjoy. Ever have a beat that just wouldn't leave your head? That's the power of music, and today, we're taking a deep dive into the world of beat making and its therapeutic benefits with our guest, Philip Drummond. Also known as Dr. Egon, he wears many hats - a beat maker, DJ, psychologist, and the director of the non-profit organization, Today's Future Sound. Together, we explore how beats become the lifeblood of hip hop, the subtle art of creating the perfect beat, and the global influences that shape our music tastes.Through the lens of his personal journey, Philip Drummond shares how beat-making has resonated with him on a deep emotional level, especially during challenging times. We discuss the cathartic process of creating music and its potential to heal, as exemplified by programs like Tilly's Future Sound. This program uses beat-making as a tool for therapy and community building, offering an outlet for expression to at-risk youth who may not otherwise have such opportunities. We also touch upon the importance of therapy in society, exploring both traditional and online methods, and how these can lead to better self-understanding.But it's not just about the beats. We celebrate the culture of hip hop, the influence of the underground scene, and the role of events like beat battles in fostering a thriving community of artists. Get insights into Philip's 365-day beat making challenge and hear firsthand about the grit and grind behind each beat. Lastly, we discuss the ongoing fundraising efforts for Today's Future Sound and how you can contribute to their mission. So, plug in your headphones, let that beat drop, and join us for an exploration of the sounds that shape our world.Consider Donating during Today's Future Sound Annual Fundraiser 2023 Here: bit.ly/TFSAF24Buy Merch Here: https://todaysfuturesound.bandcamp.co...Subscribe to Todays Future Sound YouTube Channel:    / @uckf9nzjs5s5a8vcnpqjclda  Read "The Healing Power of Hip Hop - The Intersections between Race, Ethnicity & Culture" Here: https://www.amazon.com/Healing-Power-...Buy Music for Inclusion and Healing in Schools and Beyond: Hip Hop, Techno, Grime, and More Here (apply Discount Code AAFLYG6 for 30% off: Support the showEdited, Mixed and Mastered by GldnmndPodcast Website Link: The Rec Show PodcastNEW!!! "These records changed my emotional perspective on music." Recorded live at Dekmantel, the Italian techno artist dissects the records that shaped his approach to DJing and production. There are few artists as widely respected as Donato Dozzy, who is known for his unique approach to building hypnotic, acid-infused atmospheres as a solo artist and as one half of Voices From The Lake. He is also a singular curator at the head of Spazio Disponibile alongside Neel, and a DJ with a reputation for building sophisticated and slowly unwinding sets at festivals like Labyrinth, Terraforma and Horst, as well as in public spaces and museums. In this Exchange live from Dekmantel 2023, Resident Advisor's editor-in-chief, Whitney Wei, asks Dozzy about the songs that shaped his craft in our Playing Favourites flagship series. He takes us back to his childhood, playing the first track that introduced him to electronic music before moving chronologically through his life and the pieces that acted as lynchpins in his creative development. He discusses how he grew up in a musical household, listening to classical orchestrations with his parents before finding Italo disco and the stylings of Giorgio Moroder, Lory D and The Future Sound of London. These albums, he says, influenced how he builds his sets, leaning into slowly unfolding narratives as he moves from one track to another. "When I started releasing albums, I decided that I wanted to create stories," he says. Listen to the episode in full. Swedish Egil on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 6/23/22 About Swedish Egil - Egil just wanted to groove…   To get the full story of GROOVE RADIO, you have to know about the man behind the groove, Swedish Egil. For nearly four decades, Egil has been bringing fresh music to the world's ears, starting with 10 years as a DJ at KROQ-FM in the 80's where he helped break many artists into the mainstream including New Order, Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, UB40 and Front 242. Always on the pulse of new and exciting global sounds, Egil spearheaded much of the music and the bands that formed the Punk, New Wave, and eventually the underground Dance movements of the early 90's. Egil then accepted a rare opportunity to develop his Music Director skills at the now legendary MARS-FM in Los Angeles – the station that broke techno / rave music on U.S. radio with The Orb, Prodigy, and Moby.   In 1992, Egil began to focus on the future beats of club culture when the first radio broadcast of his own GROOVE RADIO INTERNATIONAL program was heard from the Arizona desert. The feedback was immediate. Listeners began to demand this new electronic sound, this breath of fresh air and positive vibes. GROOVE RADIO soon became the catalyst for electronic music's exposure across the entire states. It was the first media outlet in the US to cater wholly to the underground community – bringing DJs, artists, and personalities from all over the world to play, spin, or just share moments of their lives across the airwaves.   With early presence on the internet back in 1995, GROOVE RADIO was the first to feature global webcasts with artists such as Future Sound of London and Orbital. This true commitment to championing the art of the DJ has helped bring into the GROOVE RADIO studio such talents as The Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, Fatboy Slim, Paul Oakenfold, Pete Tong, Paul van Dyk, Sasha, John Digweed, Basement Jaxx, Groove Armada, Faithless, LTJ Bukem, Dimitri From Paris, BT, Roni Size & Reprazent, Carl Cox, Roger Sanchez, and many more.   Since its inception, GROOVE RADIO has celebrated over 2500 syndicated shows, launched the first 24/7 radio station in Los Angeles dedicated to DJ culture, became a top 5 internet stations in the world, and has released an acclaimed series of GROOVE RADIO PRESENTS recordings. With a worldwide audience at GROOVERADIO.COM, Egil maintains his vision and the promise from years ago to make digital dance music available to the masses.   About The DJ Sessions - “The DJ Sessions” is a Twitch/Mixcloud "Featured Partner” live streaming/podcast series featuring electronic music DJ's/Producers via live mixes/interviews and streamed/distributed to a global audience. Protoculture on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 4/20/22   About Protoculture -    'Everything he touches turns to musical gold' - Armin van Buuren, A State of Trance Only a few South African producers enjoy the success that DJ and Producer Nate Raubenheimer, better known to most as Protoculture, has had over the last 12 years of his career. Hailed by many of his piers as South Africa's biggest dance music export, he has also left his mark on the international dance scene with his trademark blend of melodic and emotionally charged compositions and DJ sets. Sucked into the art of music production at a young age, Nate made the leap to pursue a music career professionally after completing his studies in Audio Engineering at age 20, immediately taking the international psy-trance scene by storm. His international debut came at the United Kingdom's famed Glastonbury Festival. With the release of his first artist album, “Refractions”, and the follow up “Circadians”, a slew of international performances ensued worldwide, seeing Nate travel to all four corners of the globe. From London to Tokyo, Sao Paulo to Moscow, Protoculture was a staple at psy-trance festivals around the globe, most notably at Glade in the UK, Universo Parallello in Bahia, Brazil, Earthcore Global Carnival in Melbourne, Australia and Ozora Festival near Budapest. Protoculture's 2010 album, “Love Technology” ushered in a great deal of changes for the South African producer, bridging the gap between his previous exclusively underground sound with influences from other genres. The album garnered attention from industry heavyweights Armin van Buuren, Markus Schulz, Max Graham and Paul Oakenfold with the single, ‘Naked' receiving support on all the aforementioned artists radio shows as well as being named ‘Track of the week' on Global DJ Broadcast. This heralded the beginning of a new era for Nate, quickly being snapped by Max Graham's Rebrand Records and Dutch powerhouse label, Armada Music which became the home for hit singles such as “Sun Gone Down”, “Cobalt”, “Topaz”, “Laguna” and many others, all smashing the Beatport Top 10 Trance charts. Nate has also built impressive remix credentials over the years at Armada, being credited with remixes for Armin van Buuren, Markus Schulz, Paul Oakenfold, Bryan Adams, Dash Berlin, Robert Miles, Jeanne Michelle Jarre and Nadia Ali. The Protoculture and Max Graham remix of Paul Oakenfold's ‘Grace – Not Over Yet' landed a number one on the Beatport Trance charts and the held the position for over a month, as well as scoring a number one position on the UK Buzz Charts and DMC UK Club Charts. He also received a SAMA nomination (South African Music Award) for his remix work on Goldfish's smash hit, ‘Cruising through' on Pacha Recordings. Protoculture, as a DJ and live performer, ranked South Africa's number one DJ according to the DJ Mag Top 100 polls from 2011 to present, has also played alongside a diverse range of international heavyweights such as Paul van Dyk, Sasha, Paul Oakenfold, Armin van Buuren, Orbital, Future Sound of London, Gareth Emery, Sander van Doorn to name but a few. A staple at Armin van Buuren's legendary A State of Trance World Tours, Nate performed alongside the 5 times world number one DJ in Mexico, South Africa and The Netherlands to sell out crowds with live performances being broadcast around the world live to over 20 million people. He has also graced the DJ booths at legendary club venues such as Ministry of Sound, UK, Ushaia and Privelege, Ibiza, Ageha, Tokyo, Colosseum, Jakarta, as well as Foundation, Seattle, Exchange, Los Angeles and more in the United States. No stranger to the festival circuit either he has performed at Fuji Rock festival in Japan and the Zurich Street Parade as well as other festival brands such as Godskitchen, Creamfields, Urban Wave (Camel Experience), Amsterdam Dance Event, Electronic Family, H20 Events, the legendary Tomorrowland and most recently Ultra Music Festival.   About The DJ Sessions -     “The DJ Sessions” is a Twitch/Mixcloud "Featured Partner” live streaming/podcast series featuring electronic music DJ's/Producers via live mixes/interviews and streamed/distributed to a global audience.
