Three hours of incendiary techno, as two veterans go head-to-head. When Speedy J described his studio dynamic with Chris Liebing back in 2014, he put it bluntly: "I try to piss him off a little." The result? Dance music that's as functional and precise as Liebing demands, with just enough chaos to keep it interesting. That tension has defined the duo's partnership, Collabs 3000, since their first releases, and it's alive and well on their debut RA Mix. Both artists are techno heavyweights in their own right. Jochem Paap, AKA Speedy J, helped Europe slow down after the breakneck '90s, proving that techno could chug as well as pummel. Liebing, meanwhile, commanded his popular label CLR and went from transforming schranz into the hard techno sound that recently swept up a younger generation of ravers. As a pair, Collabs 3000 undeniably has its ear trained on the big room. Paap and Liebing are both former Berghain regulars, and the Berlin club's influence is clear across RA.1006: taut, muscular techno, or "effective and structured" in Liebing's words, with Paap injecting the right amount of unpredictability. Their 2005 full-length, Metalism

TECH CLUBBERS PODCAST W/ MESH CONVERGENCE Nahuel Rodriguez, better known as Mesh Convergence, has carved a singular path in techno with a hybrid language of precision rhythms, dystopian atmospheres, and sci-fi tinted sound design. Rooted in the Iberian current and shaped by the Spanish Birmingham axis, his music balances emotional weight, experimental drive, and hypnotic pressure that hit with intent. His rise has been marked by releases on Kazerne (MORD), Tar Hallow, Faut Section, Edit Select, Newrhythmic, among others. International support from DVS1, Laurent Garnier, Rodhad, Headless Horseman, Takaaki Itoh, Setaoc Mass, Lewis Fautzi, Adriana Lopez, and more has carried his tracks into booths at Berghain, Awakenings, Bassiani, Sisyphos, Fabrik, and Tresor, as well as PoleGroup radio and club nights. From his base in Granada, Mesh Convergence has brought this vision to the stage at Industrial Copera and Domo Festival. Recent chapters include the EP Still Dealing With It on Kazerne (MORD) and Tar 35 on Tar Hallow. These records distill his core idea: mechanical discipline, otherworldly texture, and a relentless pull toward the unknown. "Podcast Note: For this appearance, Mesh Convergence leans into a more tribal and hypnotic register, featuring organic percussion, tactile textures, and nature inspired timbres, tracing the edge between grounded ritual and gentle dissociation. Expect slow-burn tension, cyclical motifs, and the pulse of the natural world rendered through future mechanics." Gen Zs are out here skipping the alcohol, but not the party. Synopsis: Join Natasha Ann Zachariah at The Usual Place every Thursday as she unpacks the latest current affairs with guests. In daytime or earlier-evening parties, a growing number of young people in Singapore are heading to raves, cafes and clubs to vibe to sick beats – with matchas and coffees in hand. I’m not a clubber by any means, but I’m curious why Gen Zs are embracing this sober partying movement wholeheartedly.Back in my day, pre-gaming with alcohol before the club, checking out different venues, and ending the night at a supper joint at 3am were the highlights of those nights out. What changed for Gen Zs and what does this mean for the nightlife scene here?In this episode of The Usual Place, I spoke with: Kavan Spruyt, co-founder of Rasa Space, who has worked with renowned venues like Berghain in Berlin, and Kyo in Singapore; and Shahan Shah Shawn, one of the Gen Z co-founders of Exposure Therapy, a company that organises events that redefine what a party can look like. Highlights (click/tap above): 1:42 What does partying sober mean? 3:56 How high costs kill the party 12:20 What’s driving the rise of day time parties? 15:50 Is this trend mirrored in the nightlife scene overseas? 19:20 The Gen Z flex: going to the gym at 5am 25:25 Do Gen Zs find alcohol uncool? "This set was recorded at dawn on a Sunday morning, closing out a long day of incredibly inspiring music. I hadn't gone to bed yet and was so locked into the sound that by the time I started playing, I was already deep in a trance. I took over from Formant Value & Simone Bauer's live set, picking up the momentum where they left off, then gradually brought the BPM down, leaning into psychedelic textures and trance-laced rhythms. Those two hours flew by - we were all locked in. It's a rare kind of magic to do what you love in a place like Refractor, where most artists stay for the whole weekend to immerse themselves in the community and support each other. Music has this way of creating deep connections, and you could feel that throughout the festival. We were part of something unique. And the crowd... what can I say. Even after a full day of dancing, they stayed with me through the entire set, joining me on the sonic journey I was crafting to carry us into the morning." Swiss-born, London-based artist TSUNIMAN has gracefully imprinted the London scene with their spellbinding selections from the underground, spanning raw trance, spacey techno, tribal rhythms, and progressive delights. TSUNIMAN's sound alchemy merges dark, hypnotic elements with ethereal vibrations, creating otherworldly soundscapes that captivate the senses. A resident at Klub Verboten and a regular at FOLD's UNFOLD party, TSUNIMAN has graced the decks at renowned institutions from Berghain's Säule to Macadam. Helena Mayfair will absolutely shatter your understanding of authenticity in this dazzling, fever-dream journey through the performative landscapes of modern existence. With razor-sharp wit and devastating insight, she guides us through her encounters with tortured artists, American finance bros, and political figures whose public posturing barely conceals their private contradictions. At the heart of this episode lies a profound question: Where does performance end and genuine experience begin? When Helena finds herself in "subspace," sinking through layers of carefully constructed personas until she discovers "something that wasn't even wearing Chanel," we're confronted with the possibility that authenticity might exist beneath our social masks—if only we're brave enough to look. The metamodern breakdown in Berghain perfectly captures our contemporary cultural condition: "To know something is ridiculous and to feel it anyway." Dancing to Aqua's "Barbie Girl" while weeping on ketamine becomes a metaphor for the oscillation between irony and sincerity that characterizes our lives. Helena's adventures—from art heists to ayahuasca retreats, from political liaisons to Los Angeles fever dreams—serve as a funhouse mirror reflecting our own attempts to navigate a world where everything feels simultaneously meaningful and absurd. What makes this episode truly transformative is how it validates our contradictions. Helena embodies the tension between cynicism and yearning, between knowing performance and desperate authenticity. Armina is our good old friend, with whom we began our exploration of ambient and experimental music back in the day at the legendary @arma17. The team from the @do-nothing promo group decided to transform the main Gallery dancefloor into a non-dance space with experimental music, marking the beginning of a whole new world. We are honoured to feature someone from that very world, especially for this anniversary edition. After more than a decade immersed on the dancefloor, R_Mina has stepped behind the decks and into the studio, translating years of raving into a distinct sonic identity. Shaped by formative nights at institutions like Arma17, Berghain and Tresor, her sound draws from the raw power of warehouse techno, channelled through a deeply personal lens. Her debut ambient set unfolds like a memory—brooding, cinematic, and quietly intense. With a palette of melancholic textures and submerged melodies, R_Mina weaves together a narrative of longing and introspection, a meditation on the beauty found in shadow and silence. Blending deep, dark, anxious and pensive tracks, her ambient set brims with nostalgia and reflections of shadows from the past.

"Designing clubs is about understanding psychology." The famed architects talk about bringing emotions, durability and hidden logic into era-defining nightlife spaces. How do you design the world's best clubs? Studio Karhard, the architecture firm started by Thomas Karsten and his wife, Alexandra Erhard, in 2003, know exactly which ingredients go into a successful nightlife space. The Berlin-based duo are the visionaries behind Berghain and ∄ in Kyiv, as well as a number of private residences, businesses and smaller venues around the world. Their specialty, they say, is salvaging forgotten spaces and resurrecting them to serve a new purpose. In this RA Exchange, Karsten talks about first coming across the building that's now Berghain and working tirelessly with engineers and city planners to preserve its neoclassical facade. As he explains, creating a memorable atmosphere goes beyond just designing for aesthetics. There are countless hidden design features that serve to make venues like Berghain comfortable. But according to Karsten, Studio Karhard's masterpiece is ∄, which they began designing in 2018. He describes the special experience of first visiting the abandoned brewery—which was then in extreme disrepair—and bringing the lessons they took away from building Berghain to make this Ukrainian space their most successful project yet. This episode takes a look under the hood of the psychology, anthropology and emotional study that inform the venues that have shaped underground electronic music culture. “The hardware world is like a sport.” The DJ and producer talks about mastering synthesis and finding community in a male-dominated music ecosystem.  Is talent innate? Today's guest, producer and modular synth extraordinaire Sibel Koçer (AKA JakoJako) doesn't think so. She's seen an extraordinary rise in her career in the last few years, earning a residency at Berghain, releasing on Mute Records, playing live shows at festivals around the world and becoming an in-demand remixer and collaborator for artists from the worlds of classical music, techno and pop. But she doesn't think she got where she is because of some God-given gift; instead, she says, her success is the result of tireless hard work.  Many years ago, when Koçer moved to Berlin to finish nursing school, she spent slow periods in her job poring over modular synth manuals. She eventually abandoned nursing and instead chose to pursue an internship at the popular Berlin synth shop SchneidersLaden, where she started learning the ins and outs of building her own system and making her first connections in the modular synth world. In this Exchange, she talks about the specific dynamics of the producer community that loves and uses hardware—which she describes as competitive and "sports-like"—as well as being a woman in this environment, finding creative inspiration from synth manuals and channeling her energy into mastering synthesis when she felt she had no other choice. Koçer is curating a compilation called Hardwired for the label Air Texture, which will be out on July 11th. It showcases music from the community of hardware enthusiasts and people who have an appreciation for machine-based music, including Rodhad, The Field, Acid Pauli and more.

"We're connected with the beginnings." The Berghain residents talk about underground values, leaving behind expectations and their debut collaborative album. In recent years, techno seems to have divided itself into two camps: those in favor of new sounds, including the hard, the fast and the maximal, and those who've reacted by taking the sound back to its original, no-frills roots. In the latter camp are Berghain residents Ben Klock and Fadi Mohem, two German artists who have become figureheads for a classic, stripped-back style. Though they're a generation apart, they've firmly aligned themselves with the faction trying to keep techno underground and understated. In this Exchange, Klock and Mohem speak about why old-school values and sensibilities remain so important to their work. And what specifically has captured Mohem—and his younger cohorts—who were born after the first iteration of this sound took shape? The duo have been DJing and making music together with increasing frequency over the last few years, celebrating and expanding upon the seeds of this style together. Mohem and Klock also discuss LAYER ONE, their beautiful album from 2024 that combines techno with IDM, ambient and experimental, featuring vocal appearances by UK artists Coby Sey and Flowdan. They talk about this departure from their typical style, which imagines a post-human world where AI reigns supreme. Klock also reflects on his connection to Berghain, his unexpected career as a DJ and the key to long-lasting relevance in a scene that never slows down. Listen to the episode in full. -Chloe Lula

Modern hypnotics from a new techno star. It's a tale as old as time: techno DJ moves to Berlin to chase a dream. Philippa Pacho is part of the latest wave of talent to tread that familiar path. But don't let that fool you. She's one of the classiest artists around—no TikTok gimmicks here. Pacho's formative years were spent in her native Stockholm, navigating a vibrant DIY party scene that included warehouse raves and illegal parties. She eventually took up a long-standing residency at beloved local club Under Bron and the experience, as she details in this week's Q&A, sharpened her technical skills, teaching her to handle every type of set—whether opening with patience, supporting a headliner or closing with finesse. She also played with countless touring DJs, from Answer Code Request to Antony Parasole, which ultimately inspired her move to Berlin. That relocation has firmly paid off. It's a testament to Pacho's talent that you'll find her playing pretty much every big club and festival across Europe, from Berghain and Dekmantel to FOLD and Monument (we were exhausted just looking at her upcoming listings on RA). Other recent highlights include closing out Bassiani's tenth birthday, and back-to-backs with Fadi Mohem and Sandrien. Pacho's RA Podcast showcases her preference for classy, hypnotic techno, striking a balance between muscle and subtle groove. Her aptitude for what makes dance floors tick is also evident on her two labels—Phorum Records and positivesource (co-run with Blue Hour)—both of which mirror her DJ style, blending intensity with delicate textures. positivesource has released several standout records, including this year's "Psycho" by BLANKA and Phil Berg's "Psyckik" (which you'll hear on this mix). Spanning 70 minutes, RA.980 is a window into Pacho's thoroughly modern sound (the oldest track is from 2018). And yet it retains a refined, sweeping quality. Give it a spin and you'll soon twig why she's in demand on dance floors worldwide. @philippapacho Read the interview and find the tracklist at ra.co/podcast/980
