In this episode, I head to Banner Elk, NC to visit with Tracy Tilley & Sheri Moretz for a behind the scenes look at the iconic Mast General Store. We take a trip back in time and learn how the Mast's down-home way of doing business is still alive today. Drawing on it's own story of resurgence, its no surprise that part of what adds to the nostalgic charm of the Mast General Store experience is their intentional alignment with areas undergoing revitalization. Buildings at every Mast location have interesting stories to tell about their hometowns. The Original Mast General Store was built in 1883 and is located in Valle Crucis, NC. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as one of the best remaining examples of an old country general store. When you visit a Mast General Store you feel like you've truly stepped back into a by-gone era. The historical locations, squeaky wood floors, antique fixtures, relics, enormously helpful & knowledgeable staff, wide range of daily necessities, and variety of goods from fashion to fried chicken cookbooks and toffee to tents, all collectively add to the experience.Mast General Store WebsiteValle CrucisLOCATIONSOriginal Location in Valle Crucis, NCAsheville, NCBoone , NCColumbia, SCGreenville, SCHendersonville , NCKnoxville, TNRoanoke, VAWaynesville , NCWinston-Salem, NC

Rusty LaRue might be the most decorated multi-sport athlete to have ever come out of Wake Forest. He also had a front row seat to the end of arguably the greatest dynasties in professional sports. LaRue details his endearing journey thru life in a fascinating conversation with Kyle Schassburger. From meeting his wife at Northwest Guilford High School, to choosing to pursue pro basketball over football, and describing the breaks he caught that earned him a spot alongside Michael Jordan on the famed 1997-98 Chicago Bulls, the 'Rusty LaRue Story' is a can't miss. Make sure you head to Mast General Store in downtown Winston-Salem to get all your Wake Forest gear before the big game Saturday! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week Gina, Kelly, and Adjoa took a trip to Boone, North Carolina, a city in the southern Appalachian Mountains with its fair share of mythology and nostalgia from its namesake, Daniel Boone, to its contemporary tourist economy. Although Boone and Watauga County were largely spared from the ravages of mining and mountaintop removal, it is nevertheless a complicated space mired in controversies about gentrification that eerily echo Watauga County’s colonial history. As they travel through the county, they visit the famous Mast General Store and end up in Meat Camp. All the while they try to pin down what’s real about southern Appalachia and the tourist economy and speculate about the future of a place with an apocryphal past. About South is produced by Gina Caison, Kelly Vines, and Adjoa Danso. Lindsey Baker is our Marketing Director. Music is by Brian Horton. You can find his music at www.brianhorton.com.
