New MTA data show major incidents delaying 50 or more trains reached their highest levels in June and July since 2018, when former Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a transit emergency. Meanwhile, groups that donate school supplies say they are rethinking their strategies as President Trump's 30 percent tariffs on China drives up prices on nearly every classroom item. Plus, Monsignor Kevin Sullivan is stepping down as the executive director of Catholic Charities of New York after more than two decades in the role.
The start of any school year is always an emotionally charged time, whether you're a child or an adult. But as a parent that excitement can quickly turn into stress and anxiety when money is tight. In July 2024, retail marketing consultancy Gekko reported that UK parents were set to shell out an average of £452.40 per child on back-to-school supplies, which combined adds up to a whopping £2.3 billion at a national level. What are the most expensive back-to-school items then? It must be even harder in the middle of the cost-of-living crisis, mustn't it? Where are the best places to look for discounts? Today on Valentine in the Morning:Everyone had an eventful weekend! Val celebrated his mom's birthday, Jon somehow ended up at a secret Maroon 5 pop-up show, and Jill braved the crowds and deep-fried Oreos at the OC Fair. Then we took a trip down memory lane and asked: what was the “in” item when you were heading back to school? Was it a pencil box, a pair of fresh white sneaks, or that one backpack everyone had to have? And finally, it's a full-on pop culture royal rumble as we try to figure out if Taylor Swift is going to perform at the Super Bowl this year. Are the rumors true? Should she do it? Or is she better off cheering from the suite next to Mama Kelce?

School supply shopping is a marker of summer winding down and a new year of learning about to begin. A survey by the National Retail Federation found more families started their shopping early this year because of that worry. For the latest in the Minnesota Now series Professional Help, Minnesota Now producer Alanna Elder talked with Julie Granning, PTO president for Valley View Elementary School in Columbia Heights, as well as Sarah Lancaster, who teaches first grade in Onamia and was named Minnesota Teacher of the Year in 2022.Lancaster noted there are school supply giveaways across the state, including one happening Tuesday at Onamia Public Schools. The blog “Thrifty Minnesota” rounded up a list of other events in the state. And the Little Canada-based organization Kids in Need Foundation also provides supplies to eligible students and teachers. Our ask: Help me shop for school supplies on a budgetOur guests: Julie Granning, PTO president for Valley View Elementary School, and Sarah Lancaster, a first grade teacher in Onamia and 2022 Minnesota Teacher of the Year.
