Organizational assessments can sound intimidating—like a test, a grade, or a “gotcha.” We sit down with Joan Brown, Chief Operations Officer at Third Sector Company, to reframe assessments as one of the smartest business moves a nonprofit can make—especially during leadership transition.Joan explains that a strong organizational assessment is not about blame. It's a systematic look at operations, performance, systems, and culture to answer one question: Are we operating in the best possible way to serve our mission? The real value is that it creates clarity and alignment across the organization—so decisions can be made with facts, not feelings or assumptions. This conversation is especially timely for boards and leaders navigating an interim period. Joan shares why assessment belongs at the top of the interim playbook: it builds a shared reality of where the organization truly stands. And that shared reality becomes the foundation for priorities, staffing decisions, resource deployment, and even a far more accurate CEO/ED job description—particularly after a long-term “legacy leader” has held an outsized set of responsibilities for years. You'll also hear the nuanced difference between transitions when a beloved CEO departs versus when a leader has been let go: in one case, people may defend the past; in the other, emotion can flood the process. Either way, a transparent and participatory assessment helps separate noise from truth and turns tension into forward motion.Joan says it best: “The main goal of the assessment process is shared reality.” When nonprofits build that shared reality early—using data, participation, and transparency—they gain the power to prioritize confidently, stabilize culture, and position the next leader for success. If your board is preparing for leadership change, facing recurring “fires,” or simply wants better decisions with limited resources—this episode is your push to start the assessment conversation now.Find us Live daily on YouTube!Find us Live daily on LinkedIn!Find us Live daily on X: @Nonprofit_ShowOur national co-hosts and amazing guests discuss management, money and missions of nonprofits! 12:30pm ET 11:30am CT 10:30am MT 9:30am PTSend us your ideas for Show Guests or Topics: HelpDesk@AmericanNonprofitAcademy.comVisit us on the web:The Nonprofit Show

Shoot us a Text.Episode #1223: Cars Commerce lines up its next CEO as a new chapter begins for dealer tech. Lucid's factory-backed used pricing puts EV depreciation in plain sight. And even as consumers keep spending this holiday season, a growing “joy deficit” reveals how tired—and cautious—shoppers really are.Show Notes with links:Our good friends at Cars Commerce are teeing up a major leadership transition. Longtime CEO Alex Vetter will hand the keys to Tobias “Tobi” Hartmann in early 2026, marking the end of an era and signaling a renewed push around growth, digital tools, and AI for dealers.Hartmann brings 25+ years of experience leading global marketplaces, most recently as CEO of Scout24 and previously at HelloFresh and eBay Enterprise.Alex Vetter, who has been with Cars.com since its 1998 launch, will step down after transforming the company into a vertical SaaS and marketplace platform for dealers.Under Vetter, Cars Commerce expanded through acquisitions like Dealer Inspire, AccuTrade, and DealerClub, strengthening its dealer-facing tech stack.Alex Vetter: “I'm confident that Tobi will continue our momentum for the next chapter of firsts. He will be a tremendous leader for this next phase of growth.”Lucid just launched its first factory-backed used-car program, and the pricing is doing more talking than the marketing.Lucid Recharged is the brand's certified pre-owned program for the Air sedan, with the Gravity SUV coming later.Eligible cars must be single-owner examples under 62,000 miles and pass a 160+ point factory inspection.Pricing is the headline: a 2023 Air Pure with ~20,000 miles can land in the mid-$40Ks versus a new MSRP just under $71K.Consumers are still spending this holiday season—but they're not exactly enjoying it as a new Retail Dive report says shoppers are leaning heavily on credit and BNPL.Katie Thomas of the Kearney Consumer Institute summed it up bluntly: there's a “real joy deficit for consumers,” driven by high prices and constant anxiety-focused messaging.Despite steady spending, consumers are fatigued, stressed, and increasingly reliant on credit, resale, and “dupe” gifting to get through the holidays.Shoppers feel stuck in an echo chamber of stress—online, in ads, and in daily life—where everything is expensive and brands keep reminding them of it.“Getting emotional doesn't have to be serious,” Thomas noted0:00 Intro with Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier6:05 Cars Commerce Announces Leadership Transition9:52 Lucid Launches CPO Program12:31 The Joy Deficit In RetailThank you to today's sponsor, Mia. In this special episode, Guy and Elesa are ready to talk about a huge, surprising announcement: Southern Jewelry News (SJN) has new ownership! Guy reveals that Chris Smith and Bill Newnam, the former owners, have sold Southern Jewelry News... to him! This transition marks the first major change since SJN began printing monthly in 1988. After over 35 years and 25 years of running the publication, Bill and Chris were ready to retire. Elesa, who has worked with the former owners for three decades, enthusiastically endorses Guy, calling him the "perfect person to take over the rain". Guy will be working alongside Elesa and Martha Oswald to continue the legacy of the longest-running and most respected jewelry publication. Guy reflects on the incredible achievement built by Bill, Chris, Elesa, and Martha. He has always seen SJN as a "gold mine", and he is honored to take on this big undertaking with his JSM team, despite having no prior publishing experience. The team addresses a major change: due to the challenging high costs of paper and postage, Southern Jewelry News and Mid-America Jewelry News (MAJN) will no longer be printed monthly. They plan to publish only a few print issues each year, possibly one every quarter, mainly for trade shows. However, Guy is committed to maintaining the "heart and soul" and respected content of SJN while implementing exciting new features and improvements online by the beginning of January. Join Elesa and Guy as they celebrate the 100th episode of the podcast and look forward to improving the website, the podcast format, and bringing more value to the industry. The future is bright, and change is good! Don't miss this must-listen episode to hear all about the transition and the exciting future of SJN! Interview with Riaan Davel, CFO, and Henriette Hooijer, CFO Designate and GM: Finance of DRDGOLD Ltd.Our previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/drdgold-nysedrd-moving-towards-200000-oz-gold-production-from-tailings-8411Recording date: 17th November 2025DRDGOLD Limited, a 130-year-old South African gold mining company, is executing a carefully orchestrated leadership transition as CFO Riaan Davel prepares to hand over responsibilities to Henriette Hooijer on February 1, 2026. The succession, built on a 20-year working relationship including nine years together at DRDGOLD, reflects the company's commitment to maintaining strategic continuity as it pursues ambitious growth plans. The company operates a distinctive business model focused on surface tailings retreatment—processing historical mining waste to extract gold while simultaneously remediating over a century of environmental damage. This "mega volumes, nano recovery" approach processes material containing just 200 parts per billion of gold, demonstrating that environmental restoration and economic viability need not be mutually exclusive. As Davel explains, "We own waste essentially. So how do we make the most of that?"DRDGOLD's disciplined execution has generated impressive results. Market capitalization has grown to approximately $2 billion, enabling capital deployment of roughly 10 billion rand in recent years, with another 8 billion rand planned over the next three years. This investment is building infrastructure designed for 20-40 year operational lifespans at operations like Far West, while repositioning the older Ergo facility for improved cost efficiency.Despite favorable gold prices—currently around 2.2 million rand per kilogram versus 600,000 rand when Far West was initially planned- management maintains the cost discipline developed during tougher market conditions. The company has paid dividends for 18 consecutive years while internally financing major capital projects, balancing stakeholder interests through what Davel describes as keeping "all your stakeholders equally unhappy" to optimize long-term resource extraction over short-term profit maximization.Looking ahead, DRDGOLD is exploring expansion opportunities across Africa and potentially South America, considering partnerships with established operators in unfamiliar jurisdictions while maintaining gold as its primary focus. Hooijer's operational project experience, combined with Davel's continued 12-month consulting support, positions the company to execute its Vision 2028 strategy while exploring how its proven retreatment model might address tailings challenges for major mining companies globally.View DRDGOLD's company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/drdgold-limitedSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

Organizations strive to stay true to their mission. The Watauga Land Trust was formed in 1995, established by Appalachian State University students concerned with protecting Howard Knob, a mountain adjacent to the Town of Boone. The new organization raised local awareness about the unprecedented pace of development not just around Boone, but across North Carolina's northwestern mountains. These concerns galvanized the local community and in 1997 the Watauga Land Trust changed its name to High Country Conservancy and expanded its jurisdiction to include Ashe, Avery and Watauga counties. The organization's mission was “to protect the natural resources of Appalachia by conserving land with significant ecological, cultural, recreational, or scenic value in the North Carolina High Country.”In May of 2010, Blue Ridge Rural Land Trust based in West Jefferson, North Carolina and High Country Conservancy, based in Boone merged to create Blue Ridge Conservancy, a private, non-profit organization that has protected over 22,000 acres in Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Mitchell, Watauga, Wilkes and Yancey Counties. In early October 2025, Blue Ridge Conservancy announced after 30 years of effort, it has secured the opportunity to purchase 73 acres on the north and east side of Howard Knob. This property adjoins the existing 5-acre park owned by Watauga County, and will protect the land forever and provide public access for nature-based recreation, including hiking and rock climbing. On this week's Mind Your Business, we speak with Eric Hiegl, BRC's Senior Director of Land Protection and Conservation Planning. We'll hear about how the organization's persistence saw them achieve their founding objective. Conversations around the cost of healthcare and related insurance coverage brings a variety of emotions these days. While the Federal Government continues to use the renewal of tax credits related to the Affordable Care Act as a chief negotiating tool in budget conversations, High Country residents are among the millions of Americans gearing up for open enrollment and could see premiums skyrocket depending on how things land in Washington. No matter how this ends, it has become more apparent than ever that maximizing one's healthcare benefits is of the utmost importance, and employers have a role to play in that conversation. On this week's Mind Your Business, we visit with Wayne Randall, Director of Blue Cross Blue Shield's Beyond Blue Neighborhood Center. We'll hear how his team works with community partners to make simple healthcare options like screenings, vaccine clinics and other services available to all, regardless of insurance coverage. When a nonprofit founder steps away, the organization often faces one of the most emotional and uncertain chapters in its history. In this episode, Joan Brown, Chief Operating Officer at Interim Executives Academy, and Catherine Bradshaw, Senior Search Specialist at EOS Transition Partners, discuss the delicate art of following a founder and building stability during leadership succession.Catherine begins, “When a founder leaves, the organization loses not only a leader but often its very identity. The board and staff must learn that the mission can thrive beyond the individual.” Her experience reveals that many boards have never navigated a leadership change — especially one that involves the founder who is the face of the organization.Joan adds, “Interim leaders give organizations breathing space. When there's no heir apparent, an interim provides structure, clarity, and a safe period to determine what the future needs to look like.” She reminds us that interim executives aren't caretakers—they're catalysts for readiness, shaping communication and confidence at every level of the organization.Together, they address the emotional realities that come when a founder steps aside: staff anxiety, donor unease, and the founder's own sense of identity loss. Catherine recommends coaching and structured off-boarding as essential supports: “Departing leaders need grace and guidance too. It's about leaving the organization strong and knowing when to step fully away.”Joan highlights the power of communication: “No one functions well with prolonged uncertainty. Clear communication with staff, donors, and community partners makes all the difference in a smooth transition.” Both guests advocate early succession planning and the importance of professional interim leadership to prevent crisis-driven change. From retaining donor trust to defining new leadership roles, this sparkling conversation reveals why founder transitions, when managed thoughtfully, can be a time of renewal rather than instability. It's a masterclass for nonprofit boards, executives, and founders who want to lead with foresight rather than fear.Find us Live daily on YouTube!Find us Live daily on LinkedIn!Find us Live daily on X: @Nonprofit_ShowOur national co-hosts and amazing guests discuss management, money and missions of nonprofits! 12:30pm ET 11:30am CT 10:30am MT 9:30am PTSend us your ideas for Show Guests or Topics: HelpDesk@AmericanNonprofitAcademy.comVisit us on the web:The Nonprofit Show

In this fourth installment of the Seven Transitions Every Successful Woman Must Navigate series, Kris explores the fog that can settle in after years of striving, building, leading, and achieving. When the urgency fades, when the goals have been met, when your days are no longer dictated by survival or ambition... who are you now? This is the striver's dilemma. In this episode, Kris shares reflections from two recent retreats—one with Arthur Brooks, one with Rebecca Campbell—that offered wildly different but equally profound insights. She weaves together data, mysticism, and lived experience to guide you through the discomfort (and deep potential) of Transition Four: Reclaiming Future Clarity. You'll hear: Why dreaming after success feels murky, not magical How the absence of urgency can feel disorienting instead of freeing The one question to ask before launching into your next project or business Why the next version of you won't be found in a revenue dashboard or your to-do list If you're standing in the in-between—done with what was, unsure of what's next—this episode will meet you there. Not with answers, but with the kind of questions that can change everything. Contact Information and Recommended Resources The best way to stay in the know? Get on the list. You're not trapped by your business, your team, or even your schedule. You're trapped by the stories you've been telling yourself about what has to happen next. In this third installment of the special mini-series on the seven transitions every successful woman must navigate when she knows it's time for something new, Kris unpacks the beliefs that quietly hold you back—the false truths that keep high-achieving women stuck in businesses they've already outgrown. She gets right to the heart of the stories we cling to when we're afraid to move on, and dismantles them one by one. Like the belief that if you step back and the business doesn't thrive, you've failed. That if you're no longer running things, you've somehow lost your relevance. That wanting something new makes you ungrateful—or worse, that letting go means it was never enough to begin with. Here's what we explore: Why it's not your job to make the business live forever How to let go without guilt, shame, or fear of becoming invisible The difference between relevance and resonance—and why resonance is what actually matters What it means to be a woman in transition and still be powerful How to redefine your value outside of what you produce This episode is not about dismantling your success—it's about unhooking from the beliefs that keep you small, tired, and holding on too tightly. Are you the biggest bottleneck in your business—and don't even realize it? You didn't build your company to babysit it. But if you're still the one making every call, solving every fire, and holding the reins so tightly no one else can lead...this episode is your wake-up call. In this second installment of the special mini-series on the seven essential transitions every successful woman must navigate when she knows it's time for something new, Kris explores what it really means to step into the advisory consultant role for the very business you created and the team you built. If you've ever felt the urge to evolve beyond the business you built, this is your roadmap—and your invitation. It's not just about delegation. It's about identity. Because learning to release control doesn't start with your team—it starts with you. Letting go of being the person who approves every decision, solves every problem, or catches every dropped ball requires more than systems—it requires a shift in who you believe yourself to be. Kris walks through why founders get stuck in a cycle of over-functioning, how perfectionism masks fear, and why holding the metaphorical bat too tightly means no one else will dare take a swing. Here's what we explore: The difference between being essential and being in the way Why your team may be relying on you more than they need to What mentorship and true leadership actually look like How to grow your business by getting out of the weeds What really happens—emotionally and practically—when you loosen your grip This episode calls you forward—not to abandon your company, but to evolve into a different kind of leader: one who guides instead of manages, who advises instead of reacts, and who trusts her team to rise. Joelle Tegwen: Why Your Scrum Master Job Needs a Reset with Every Leadership Change Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Agile and Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes. Joelle shares her experience as a coach and Scrum Master at a small startup where multiple companies had merged over several years. When a new VP with a conservative approach replaced her original sponsor who favored significant change, Joelle failed to adapt her tactics and align with the new leadership's direction. She emphasizes the critical importance of listening to feedback from leaders and avoiding the anti-pattern of only listening to peers and direct managers instead of higher-level leadership. Joelle explains that whenever you get a new leader, your job essentially starts over again, requiring you to discover their goals and style through interviews about their priorities. She stresses that change happens through people, not just actions, and that pushing too hard creates more resistance. In this segment, we refer to the book The First 90 Days by Michael D. Watkins and the Deep Canvassing Technique. Self-reflection Question: How do you currently assess and adapt to new leadership styles in your organization, and what steps could you take to better align your change management approach with leadership expectations? You say you want freedom. But are you really ready for it? This week, Kris kicks off the first of seven essential transitions every successful woman must navigate when she knows it's time for something new. It starts with a brutally honest question: Is your business ready to run without you? And are you ready to let it? In this episode, Kris unpacks what readiness really means—not just logistically, but emotionally. Because saying you're done and being done are two very different things. Here's what we explore: The trap of being needed—and why it's so hard to let go How your team might be holding you back (even if they mean well) Why control feels safer than it really is And how to know if you're truly ready for what's next This isn't about stepping down. It's about stepping into a new version of you. And readiness is just the beginning. Contact Information and Recommended Resources Wanna know if your business is ready to run without you? Succession only looks seamless from the outside. Yakub Hazzard shares what it really took to step into the chair role at Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp LLP, and why leadership transitions require more than just good timing. How do you plan for change without disrupting what already works? Yakub walks through the nearly two-year succession planning process that prepared him to take over as chair, from building internal alignment to choosing the right leadership partner. He shares how the firm prioritized culture over convenience, and why that made all the difference. Yakub also reflects on his journey from paralegal to partner, with a few unexpected stops along the way. Raised in a household of professional athletes, he learned early what discipline looks like up close. Time at NBCUniversal gave him a new perspective on what clients actually need from their lawyers, something he carries into every interaction today. The episode also covers how the firm is growing with intention, where entertainment law is headed, and how AI is already reshaping the conversation.
