The Brothers Gillespie officially began in 2018 with their eponymous debut EP. Brothers Aaron, Davis, and Clay began by playing primarily in the bars in their hometown of Waynesville, NC, where they could showcase the songs they had written and scratch their itch to perform. In 2019, the band decided to move operations to Johnson City, TN with the promise that they would give their musical aspirations a year, and if there was more partying than progress, they would give it up and move on. That year, they released their first album, Love & Death. In the time since, the band moved back to NC and has steadily gained momentum playing venues, festivals, and radio stations all across the southeast, as well as continually releasing music, including their second album, American Pastoral, in 2022. The current lineup of The Brothers Gillespie consists of Davis Gillespie (vocals, guitar), Aaron Gillespie (guitar), Clay Gillespie (drums), Chance Kuehn (guitar), and J.R. Williams (bass). They are a homegrown act, birthed in the mountains of Western North Carolina, and consisting of five gritty, soulful individuals that offer a sound steeped in Rock ‘n' Roll and Americana. In 2025, they look to build on their talent and continue expanding their reach and catalogue. An experienced investment broker would advise you to buy Brothers Gillespie stock NOW. And if you don't get the chance to see them when they come to your town, as they love to say at the end of every show, they'll see you down the road.

When I looked at the cover of These Blue Mountains by Sarah Loudin Thomas, I couldn't help but think of the cover from the early editions of Anne of Green Gables. Listen in to see what Sarah has to say about that. note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. We talked about so much that I have a hard time remembering everything, but I loved hearing about how Sarah writes the stories that inspired previous books and her next one, too. Inspired by the book, The German Invasion of Western North Carolina by Jacqueline Burgin Painter These Blue Mountains by Sarah Loudin Thomas A moving story of love, betrayal, and the enduring power of hope in the face of darkness. German pianist Hedda Schlagel's world collapsed when her fiancé, Fritz, vanished after being sent to an enemy alien camp in the United States during the Great War. Fifteen years later, in 1932, Hedda is stunned to see Fritz's name in a photograph of an American memorial for German seamen who died near Asheville, North Carolina. Determined to reclaim his body and bring closure to his ailing mother, Hedda travels to the US. Her quest takes a shocking turn when, rather than Fritz's body, his casket contains the remains of a woman who died under mysterious circumstances. Local deputy Garland Jones thought he'd left that dark chapter behind when he helped bury Fritz Meyer's coffin. The unexpected arrival of Hedda, a long-suffering yet captivating woman, forces him to confront how much of the truth he really knows. As they work together to uncover the identity of the woman in the casket and to unravel Fritz's fate, Hedda and Garland grow closer. But with Hedda in the US on borrowed time while Hitler rises to power in Germany, she fears she'll be forced to return home before she can put the ghosts of her past to rest. Across the South, the word witch has been used to explain what people fear and cannot control. For generations, healers, midwives, conjurers and root workers carried knowledge their communities needed, yet often faced suspicion when tragedy struck. In this episode of Southern Mysteries, we explore the real lives and southern legends behind those branded as witches. From colonial courts to mountain cabins and coastal swamps, these stories reveal how the line between healing and haunting has always been thin and how fear can turn ordinary people into figures of folklore. Art in Healing From Crises: A Conversation with Shelley McKechnieInside this episode with your host, Mitch Hampton:It feels as if all of us who live in Western North Carolina were affected in so many various ways by the Hurricane Helene in 2024. Pulling back into the largest focus it is a truth that some of the best works of art in history were created from and forged in the most difficult of circumstances. I was most impressed by all of the artwork collected in our guest Shelley McKechnie's wonderful volume on the experience. To me it is a form of artwork of sorts to collaborate with the many people in the volume and to make decisions as to what will be included in such a book. Now a year later than that storm, and during which so many people have been so helpful and healing during this period, I found my conversation with her an indispensable one for our podcast. Link to this magnificent book: www.hawcreekpress.comMore about Shelley McKechnie and her wonderful work: Shelley McKechnie's career sits at the intersection of the arts, business, and community development. In partnership with a Gambian community organization, she started and ran an entrepreneurship program for teen girls in West Africa that's now led by program graduates. Shelley holds an MBA from the University of Chicago and a BA in English from Cornell University. In this episode of The Articulate Fly fly fishing podcast, host Marvin Cash reconnects with guide Mac Brown for another Casting Angles segment focused on North Carolina's delayed harvest season. With the first Saturday in October marking the start of DH fishing across Western North Carolina waters, Mac shares tactical insights for success throughout the fall and winter. He explains how stocked trout behavior evolves rapidly—while "junk food" patterns work during the initial week, fish quickly become educated and demand more sophisticated presentations. Mac reveals his preferred approach: small dry flies (size 18-20) paired with wet fly droppers, which outperform the indicator rigs that 95% of anglers rely on. He emphasizes egg patterns as consistently productive throughout winter as trout focus on spawning activity and recommends fishing them without suspension devices for direct contact. The conversation covers why stocked fish look up due to hatchery feeding habits, the importance of natural presentation sink rates versus heavy tungsten beads and how to differentiate your tactics as fishing pressure increases. Mac also announces his upcoming class and show schedule.Related ContentS6, Ep 130 - Casting in Color: Mac Brown's Fall Fly Fishing StrategiesS6, Ep 136 - From Arkansas to Appalachia: Fly Fishing with Mac BrownS6, Ep 145 - Navigating Winter Waters: Unconventional Strategies with Mac BrownS6, Ep 141 - Mastering Cold Weather Fly Fishing with Mac BrownAll Things Social MediaFollow Mac on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube.Support the Show Shop on AmazonBecome a Patreon PatronSubscribe to the PodcastSubscribe to the podcast in the podcatcher of your choice.Advertise on the PodcastIs our community a good fit for your brand? Laura speaks to organizers in western North Carolina one year after Hurricane HeleneThis show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to LauraFlanders.org/donateDescription: When Hurricane Helene hit western North Carolina in September 2024, it came as a shock, hitting mountains, not coasts, and flooding rivers and communities with little experience of dealing with hurricanes. Helene quickly became one of the worst storms to ever hit the U.S., and in the absence of a quick response by state or federal government, other groups flooded in. Right-wing actors took advantage of the chaos, spreading rumors about looting and trying to boost their image. But it's the mutual aid networks — some long standing, others new that responded with creative, effective strategies to distribute water, medicine and help communities rebuild. In this episode, Laura Flanders heads to some of the hardest-hit areas in western North Carolina and speaks with community activists to hear the lessons to be learned for the future. Amid Trump cuts to FEMA and the National Weather Service, the future for storm recovery in North Carolina is uncertain. But one thing's for sure — mutual aid support like Pansy Collective, Cherokee One Feather, Racial Justice Coalition (RJC), Rural Organizing and Resilience (ROAR) and Collaborativa La Milpa have the strategies and solutions we may all need for survival.“It takes the state a long time to mobilize, and that might continue to be true as FEMA gets defunded . . . It's imperative that people fight to keep their disaster response funding, but until then, we need to know how to respond ourselves.” - RT“We were talking to the people that were staying in hotels because they had just lost everything and didn't know where they were going to get their next meal or their medicine. Talk to those people . . . We had those journalists, especially BIPOC journalists in Western North Carolina, making sure those stories were told.” - Brooklyn Brown (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians)Guests:• Brooklyn Brown (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians): Reporter, Cherokee One Feather•. One year after Hurricane Helene devastated Western North Carolina, Canton Mayor Zeb Smathers joins The Hometown Holler for a powerful conversation about crisis, community, and the fight to keep small towns alive. Zeb relives Helene — from the death and destruction, to the misinformation and political spin, to the everyday acts of heroism that show why small towns still matter. He also recounts the paper mill shutdown known as “Black Monday” and shares what these experiences taught him about resilience, humanity, and the meaning of home. Along the way, he reveals what Washington gets wrong about rural America — and even weighs in on pro wrestling. For more Tar Heel deep dives and quick hits, subscribe to The Hometown Holler and follow us on social media:Follow us:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thehometownhollerTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@hometownhollerBlue Sky: https://bsky.app/profile/thehometownholler.bsky.socialTwitter/X: https://x.com/hometown_hollerFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/thehometownhollerPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/c/TheHometownHoller

A year ago, Hurricane Helene slammed into Western North Carolina. What followed was one of the greatest storm disasters in our history, with uncounted deaths and destruction across the rural mountain communities. Federal assistance and response was wholly inadequate, leaving many even today still without basic needs. But from the wreckage rose community and an unstoppable Faith. Where our governments failed, the people came together, reminding us of the true foundation of strength in this nation. The story of Western North Carolina is about overcoming, putting their faith in Jesus, and coming together as Americans. Today we honor that. #BardsFM_TheAmericanBrand #HurricaneHelene #LoveYourNeighbor Bards Nation Health Store: www.bardsnationhealth.com BardsFM CAP, Celebrating 50 Million Downloads: https://ambitiousfaith.net Morning Intro Music Provided by Brian Kahanek: www.briankahanek.com MYPillow promo code: BARDS Go to https://www.mypillow.com/bards and use the promo code BARDS or... Today on Consuming the Craft, I welcomed Charlie Frisch from the American Red Cross to dive into the often-misunderstood world of blood donation. We got into what the Red Cross really does—going beyond blood drives to offer lifesaving training, disaster relief, and resources for veterans. Charlie shed light on the urgent and ongoing need for blood, especially in Western North Carolina, and shared the staggering fact that only 3% of people donate blood regularly. We unraveled misconceptions, discussed what it really feels like to give blood, and shared practical advice for anyone considering rolling up their sleeve for the first time. In true Consuming the Craft fashion, we also explored the intersection of fermentation and blood science while sampling a fine Armagnac, connecting the dots between crafting drinks and saving lives.Charlie Frisch has been with the American Red Cross for about a year, bringing with him 14 years of radio experience and several years in outdoor and alternative education. A New Yorker at heart who found his way to Asheville, Charlie is deeply passionate about community resilience and education. As a Red Cross representative, he works endlessly to inform and inspire others to donate blood and volunteer, helping to drive humanitarian aid and relief efforts far beyond local boundaries."When you think about the fact, and this is staggering, that only 3% of folks donate blood… that shortage starts to make sense." ~Charlie FirschToday on Consuming the Craft:· The American Red Cross does much more than just blood drives; they provide lifeguard, CPR, and first aid training, disaster relief, and support for veterans.· Only 3% of Americans regularly donate blood, leading to a perpetual shortage both locally in Western North Carolina and nationwide.· Blood donations are critical because blood can only be stored for 42 days before it must be used.· The process of donating blood is now quick (about 40 minutes), virtually painless, and highly efficient thanks to skilled professionals.· Power Red donations allow eligible donors to give a concentrated amount of red blood cells using a smaller needle, making the experience even easier.· Donors receive information on their blood type, blood pressure, hemoglobin, and even where their blood ends up being used—all via the Red Cross app.· Anyone in good health, aged 17+ (or 16 with parental consent), can donate, and Power Red requires certain height and weight minimums.· Interested individuals and organizations can volunteer with or host blood drives through the Red Cross, increasing their community impact. In the ancient mountains of Western North Carolina, where emeralds hide in weathered stone and mist cloaks valleys older than memory, something watches from the shadows. This episode explores the legend of the Boojum, a massive, hair-covered recluse that has haunted these hills since before the Cherokee walked the ridges.Part Bigfoot, part treasure guardian, and wholly mysterious, the Boojum collects gems with the eye of a connoisseur and the strength to tear trees from the ground. Our story begins with a shaken geologist stumbling into a Burnsville diner with an impossible tale, then reaches back through centuries of encounters. From Cherokee oral traditions that speak of Nun'Yunu'Wi's cousin who left garnets at the doors of newborns, to Civil War soldiers fleeing in terror from a creature that seemed to forbid violence in its domain, to modern-day scientists discovering inexplicable forest gardens tended by an unknown hand, we trace the evolution of a legend that refuses to fade.Drawing from historical accounts, family journals, and the testimony of a secret network of protectors known as the Keepers, we explore what happens when ancient mystery collides with the modern world of GPS tracking and thermal drones. In an age where every square foot of earth can be photographed from space, the Boojum reminds us that some things are more valuable when they remain hidden, and that wonder itself might be worth protecting.Get Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteSupport Our Sponsors

[6] And he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. [7] But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.” [8] And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had seized them, and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. Today on Consuming the Craft, I welcomed back Jeff Frisbee from Addison Farms, a returning guest and the driving force behind one of our region's finest family-run wineries. We caught up over a glass of wine—okay, maybe more than one glass—while sharing laughs about the unique problems that accompany running a vineyard, especially as harvest season approaches. From creative deer deterrent tactics to the intense workdays of grape picking and pressing, we dove into the realities, challenges, and joys of small-scale winemaking. Jeff also gave me a fascinating wine-mead blend to distill for student projects, sparking a discussion about fermentation, distillation, and the pursuit of crafting something truly unique. Jeff is the owner and winemaker at Addison Farms, a limited production winery nestled in the rolling hills of Western North Carolina. Hailing from a background rooted deeply in local agriculture, he and his family have worked tirelessly to not only keep the farm in the family but also to evolve it into a celebrated destination for wine lovers. Jeff's ethos centers on stewardship of the land, a commitment to quality, and a willingness to experiment—all grounded in a love for community and a touch of self-deprecating humor. “This time of year, we have to stop worrying about esthetics and start worrying about practicality—because the deer can decimate very quickly.” ~Jeff Frisbee Today on Consuming the Craft:· Addison Farms' 2023 and 2024 red wines are still in barrel, while their whites have already been released and are almost sold out.· The fruit from the past couple of years has been fantastic, and prospects for the coming harvest look strong—if the deer can be kept at bay.· Creative methods (wind socks, RVs, noise makers) are essential for deterring wildlife and protecting the vineyard's livelihood.· Harvest days are long and intense, starting early in the morning, featuring manual grape picking and immediate processing.· As a “limited production winery,” Addison Farms operates smaller than most and relies heavily on family and community help.· Consistent fermentation is a key to quality, especially when annual crop conditions can vary drastically.· Jeff donates wine and mead blends to support student distilling projects, believing in the value of experimentation and education.· Protecting farmland is at the core of Jeff's mission—keeping agricultural spaces safe from development is a personal and community priority. Guest Contact: Jeff at Addison Farms Website: addisonfarms.net In-person: 4005 New Leicester Hwy, Leicester, NC 28748 (Open Thursday–Sunday, 2–7 PM; Saturday tours at 2 PM) Resources Mentioned: · Addison Farms Vineyards· Student distillation projects at AB Tech· Bas Armagnac (as a tasting and discussion point) • Madeira and its historical estufagem processStop by Addison Farms, lend a hand, or join Jeff for a tour—you'll get a real taste of North Carolina's agricultural legacy, and maybe even a story or two you won't hear anywhere else.
