FAITH THAT WORKS Gordon Dabbs, PhD James 2.14-26 James 2.14 (ESV) What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? James is confronting the difference between a PROFESSED faith and a PRACTICED faith. James 2.15-16 (ESV) If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace, be warmed and filled,' without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? Having the right theology—the right beliefs—without a life that follows is like having a perfect set of blueprints for a house you never build. Verse 14: A non-saving faith Verse 16: A no-good faith Verse 19: demonic faith Verse 20: Useless faith Verse 22: Incomplete faith Verse 24: Inauthentic faith Verse 26: Lifeless faith Genuine belief always affects behavior. James 2.19 (ESV) You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder! Biblical faith is more than agreement. Biblical faith is allegiance. Romans 3.28 (ESV) For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. James 2.24 (ESV) You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. Paul says: Works are not the root of salvation. James says: Works are the fruit of your salvation. 1 Corinthians 15.10 (NIV) . . . By the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. James 2.22 (ESV) [Abraham's] faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works. . . Romans 5.8 (ESV) God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. James 2.26 (ESV) For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead. NO FAVORITES Gordon Dabbs, PhD James 2.1-13 James 2.1 (ESV) My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. Favoritism sees people according to what they can potentially give us. Grace sees people according to the value God has already given them. Galatians 3.27 (NLT) And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes. James 2.5 (ESV) Has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom? The person you barely notice is someone God deeply treasures. We must never confuse visibility with value. James 2.8 (ESV) If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well. James 2.12-13 (ESV) So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty . . . Mercy triumphs over judgment. People who forget how much mercy they have received become stingy with mercy. The gospel does not merely save us. It retrains our eyes. A COMMUNITY SET APART Gordon Dabbs, PhD Psalm 133.1; Romans 14.19 Psalm 133.1 (ESV) Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! In a divided world, the people of God are meant to be a glimpse of something better. Galatians 3.28 (ESV) There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave[a] nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. One reason unity is rare is that unity requires something from us. Church is the place where you do not always get your way. Romans 14.1 (NLT) Accept other believers who are weak in faith, and don't argue with them about what they think is right or wrong. Romans 14.10 (NLT) So why do you condemn another believer[a]? Why do you look down on another believer? Romans 14.19 (NLT) So then, let us aim for harmony in the church and try to build each other up. Harmony exists, and only exists, when different notes learn how to belong together. WHEN IT GETS PERSONAL Gordon Dabbs, PhD Psalm 73 Psalm 73.2-3 (NLT) But as for me, I almost lost my footing. My feet were slipping, and I was almost gone. For I envied the proud when I saw them prosper despite their wickedness. The division out there is fueled by disorder in here. Psalm 73.1 (NLT) Truly God is good to Israel, to those whose hearts are pure. Psalm 73.4-5 (NLT) They seem to live such painless lives; their bodies are so healthy and strong. They don't have troubles like other people; they're not plagued with problems like everyone else. That short phrase in the NLT carries weight – “seem to.” Psalm 73.13 (NLT) Did I keep my heart pure for nothing? Did I keep myself innocent for no reason? When my heart becomes disordered, my perspective becomes distorted. Psalm 73.17 (NKJV) Until I went into the sanctuary of God; Then I understood their end. The sanctuary is a circuit-breaker. It interrupts the formation process of the world. Psalm 73.21-22 (NLT) Then I realized that my heart was bitter, and I was all torn up inside. I was so foolish and ignorant—I must have seemed like a senseless animal to you. Psalm 73.25 (NLT) Whom have I in heaven but you? I desire you more than anything on earth. On any given day we are left inflamed by whatever grievances the Internet has exposed us to, yet we are impotent to do much, if anything, about it. The endless conveyor belt of content puts more things on our radar in a day than people a century ago would encounter in a year – often about places we've never heard of and issues we didn't know were issues. Psalm 2.4 (NIV) The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them. What holds when the world shakes? Where do we stand when the storm hits? The storm reveals the shelter. Our attention is being discipled by outrage. What gets my attention gets access to my soul. What is shaping me? You can be a Christian in belief and still be discipled by outrage in practice. The answer is learning to care from a place of praise rather than panic. Psalm 2.11 (NLT) Serve the Lord with reverent fear, and rejoice with trembling. Wisdom is not merely information you collect. Wisdom is a life you learn in relationship with others. Nobody becomes wise alone. Proverbs 27.17 (NLT) As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend. Not every relationship you have deserves the same access to you. 1 Corinthians 15.33 (ESV) Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.” Love everyone always. Choose your closest companions carefully. Faithful friends tell the truth. Proverbs 27.6 (ESV) Faithful are the wounds of a friend; profuse are the kisses of an enemy. Proverbs 27.9 (NLT) The heartfelt counsel of a friend is as sweet as perfume and incense. Isolated people have a hard time seeing their own blind spots. I don't want to just find the right people. . .I want to become the right person that those right people can trust. Revelation 3:14-22 - Speaker: Briley Hughes - Our study through Jesus' seven letters to His church comes to a close with a surprising mix of severity and grace. By their own measure, the church in Laodicea thought they were thriving, and so they assumed Jesus would be pleased with them. Instead, He brings one of the most jarring assessments in all the letters. He says He is so disgusted that He wants to spit them out. But, Jesus doesn't expose them to shame them. He does it to offer them something incredible. As we study this text together, we'll find Jesus dismantling a comfortable church's confidence so He can give them what they truly need and can only find in Him. May the Lord use this passage to show us where we've grown self-sufficient, and may we receive from Him what only He can give.
