Yvonne Matsell is a celebrated music booker and long-time friend of the Canadian indie music scene. As the live music talent buyer for clubs like Ultrasound, Ted's Wrecking Yard, The Horseshoe Tavern and The Reverb Room, Yvonne gave countless indie bands their first decent gigs, and watched as many of them went on to become success stories and musical household names. Just a few of the bands and artists that flourished as a result of Yvonne's magic touch include: Skydiggers, Lowest of the Low, Rheostatics, Barenaked Ladies, Headstones, Matt Mays, Ron Sexsmith, Sarah Slean, Hawksley Workman, Feist, and Broken Social Scene. In a business that can often be tough, gritty and uber-competitive, Yvonne remains "one of the good ones". A deep love of music, good humour, generosity, and a willingness to work tirelessly on behalf of artists, has made her one of the most admired and respected people in the Canadian music landscape. Andy Maize and Josh Finlayson are masters of embracing change and evolution in the creative process. Track 6—“Come to My Senses”—is an example of their ability to keep moving forward, and making music that is fresh, relevant, but still authentic to who they are.In this episode, they reveal how a song written years ago, blossomed in the recording studio with the help of a solid bass line, great musicians (such as trumpet player Daniel Lapp), and a fruitful collaboration with producer and multi-instrumentalist Joby Baker. In addition to the interview, you'll also hear Andy and Josh perform two songs: "Come to My Senses" (Hide Your Light, 2023) and "Warmth of the Sun" (Warmth of the Sun, 2017). Idaho native and author Alyssa Harad talks with Marcia Franklin about her first book, Coming to My Senses, which chronicles her surprise at discovering how the power of perfume helped her grow personally as both a writer and feminist. She also recommends books for good winter reading. Harad, who grew up in Boise, had been working in a series of unfulfilling jobs in Austin, TX after receiving her Ph.D. One day she started reading about perfume. Her academic interest in the language and history of scent turned personal when she began ordering perfume for herself and others. She found that all of her senses became more acute, making her a better writer, and that enjoying perfume also broadened her ideas about what it meant to be a strong woman. Coming to My Senses is the story of how Alyssa Harad transformed her life when she developed a love for perfume in her mid-30s. She didn't set out to write a memoir at first--the original plan was that she'd be editing an anthology of some of her favorite writing from the various perfume fan blogs that fueled her own passion for scents. For various reasons, that project didn't pan out, but the responses to her own writing in the proposal was encouraging enough that she began to tell her own story...
