Yvonne Matsell is a celebrated music booker and long-time friend of the Canadian indie music scene. As the live music talent buyer for clubs like Ultrasound, Ted's Wrecking Yard, The Horseshoe Tavern and The Reverb Room, Yvonne gave countless indie bands their first decent gigs, and watched as many of them went on to become success stories and musical household names. Just a few of the bands and artists that flourished as a result of Yvonne's magic touch include: Skydiggers, Lowest of the Low, Rheostatics, Barenaked Ladies, Headstones, Matt Mays, Ron Sexsmith, Sarah Slean, Hawksley Workman, Feist, and Broken Social Scene. In a business that can often be tough, gritty and uber-competitive, Yvonne remains "one of the good ones". A deep love of music, good humour, generosity, and a willingness to work tirelessly on behalf of artists, has made her one of the most admired and respected people in the Canadian music landscape. Thanks for giving my little podcast a listen. It's a continuing experiment to see if each week I can notice and remember and then record three things that left behind tracks of gratitude and happiness. Just stuff from my little life I share with Shelagh up here on latitude 53 in Edmonton, Canada. This week: 1. Print – reflections on a wonderful dinner at Filistix that left a kind of stamp on me 2. Dolphins – the night Hawksley Workman ascended from the deep 3. Crunch – putting the i back in kitchen The original podcast music is from Edmonton pianist, teacher and composer Brendan McGrath. The end bells of gratitude are the gift of Edmonton artist and humanitarian Slavo Cech. I'm at glenn.kubish@gmail.com
Singer, songwriter and guitarist Serena Ryder was born on December 8, 1983 in Millbrook, Ontario, Canada. A strikingly pretty brunette with a remarkably deep, soulful and powerful three-octave voice, Serena stems from strong musical roots: Her Canadian mother was a go-go dancer and touring back-up singer while her Trinidadian father was a guitarist and percussionist with the Carribean folk group the Tradewinds. Ryder began singing publicly when she was just a little girl and got her first guitar from her dad at age thirteen. She attended the Integrated Arts Program at Peterborough Collegiate and Vocational Institute and took music lessons from Terry Finn at Finn's House of Music. Serena started out performing solo as a teenager plus performed with the Christian rock band Thousand Foot Krutch and the hard rock alternative group Three Days Grace. Ryder released her first album "Falling Out" on the indie label Mime Radio in 1999. In 2002 she recorded a demo album which led to her playing on the air on CBC Radio. Fellow Canadian musician Hawksley Workman heard the broadcast and was sufficiently impressed enough to ask Serena to record an album on his Isadora record label. The album "Unlikely Emergency" was released in 2005 and received favorable reviews from music critics. Moreover, the poignant song "Just Another Day" got considerable airplay on various Canadian radio stations. Ryder's follow-up album "If Your Memory Serves You Well," a terrific collection of mostly inspired covers of notable songs by Canadian music artists that includes Leonard Cohen's "Sisters of Mercy," Galt MacDermot's "Good Morning Starshine," and Percy Faith's "My Heart Cries for You" as well as three excellent original compositions, was released in November, 2006 and once again garnered highly positive reviews from critics. Serena won the 2008 Juno Award for New Artist of the Year and released the EP CD "Told You in a Whispered Song" on June 19, 2007. This was followed by both the EP CD "Sweeping the Ashes" and the album "Is It O.K." in 2008.

Jeen O'Brien is utterly brilliant, she's also extremely prolific, releasing five records since 2015. She has also helped create tunes for a slew of great Canadian artists including Serena Ryder, Hawksley Workman, and Great Big Sea, and has had her music featured in everything from Google commercials to Degrassi. As a young boy, Simon Whitfield loved playing team sport. In particular, soccer and ice hockey, and through these pursuits, he was able to develop important skills that would go on to serve him well in the future. However, it was the sport of running that really captured his interest, inspiring him to think about what was possible in his life.He has nothing but fond memories when he reflects on his first time being introduced to triathlon, getting his start in the Sharbot Lake kid's triathlon which was an informal, family friendly community-based event. He fell in love with triathlon and in order to become the very best he could be, he said his good byes to his family and friends and left his home in Kingston, Ontario, to travel alone, as a 16-year old, more than halfway across the world, to Sydney, Australia to complete high school and to train amongst its top-ranked triathletes. This decision would ultimately pay off for Simon and help spur him on to Olympic greatness. You'll hear how in our discussion today. In this episode, Simon shares the role that visualization played in the process of winning his gold medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, as well how it always helped him to create and play out different scenarios in his head in order to always be ready for anything that happened in competition. Simon is a deep thinker, and in our discussion, he shares what he feels he has learned about himself, not only through success, but also through hardship and adversity. It's these life lessons that continue to propel him on in his own journey, inspiring him to find meaning and purpose in his life that extend far beyond his identify as a world class athlete and Olympian to something that means so much more to him; the ability to always remain open and curious about the world and to always connect with nature, be out on the ocean as a certified paddle board instructor and to give back to his sport and to the younger generation of athletes striving to follow in his footsteps. Simon's BioSimon Whitfield, triathlete (born 16 May 1975 in Kingston, ON). Simon Whitfield is a four-time Olympian and Canada's first-ever Olympic gold medalist in triathlon. Whitfield won gold at the 2000 Olympic Summer Games in Sydney, the first year that the triathlon was an Olympic event. Although he did not medal at the 2004 Games in Athens, he sprinted to a silver medal at the 2008 Games in Beijing. Whitfield was the Canadian flag-bearer at the 2012 Olympic Summer Games in London but crashed during the bicycle portion of the triathlon and was forced to pull out of the event. Whitfield has also amassed a total of 12 World Cup wins in addition to his gold and silver Olympic medals. He retired from competition in 2013 and was inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 2017.Connect with SimonTwitter: https://twitter.com/simonwhitfieldSpecial Recognition to: Special credit to CBC Sports for their video of Simon's Olympic Victory: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gg2SKW69AY0As well special credit to Hawksley Workman for their 'Beauty as Anger' song used in this episode: https://hawksleyworkman.com/Special credit as well to the Tragically Hip and Jordi Savall for their music

This week on HARK, we're celebrating two holidays with just one set of requests. Notable interesting person Richard submitted a decidedly non-standard version of "Baby It's Cold Outside," performed by Jimmy Pardo and Scott Aukerman, which we're covering for ... Valentine's Day(?). He also submitted "3 Generations" by Hawksley Workman, which definitely fits a Family Day theme. Thanks again, Richard, for the requests! This week's ranking music is "A House or Maybe a Boat" by Hawksley Workman.

Mike chats with Hawksley Workman about his career as a musician, from "Striptease" to "Around Here".
Hawksley Workman has been making albums since the late 90s (his first full-length, For Him and the Girls, came out in 1999) and he's been releasing new music every year or 2 since then. He's rarely been one to stick to the same vibe record-to-record, jumping between styles and influences in a way that he says was likely frustrating for record execs, his touring band, and perhaps even some of his fans over the years. However, he's always been a unique and singular artist, and his longtime fans have never doubted the authenticity of his music, whether it's stripped-down folk, high-energy synth-pop, or anything in between. Besides his many solo releases and tour dates around the world, he's also served as a producer for some of Canada's best folk and pop acts, wrote a stage musical with accompanying soundtrack, and has put out a pair of records as drummer and singer with the band Mounties. More recently, he released a brand new solo record ("Median Age Wasteland") earlier this year, just yesterday put out a single ("Around Here") from an already-completed new album, and will be on a 24-date tour with a full band across Canada from November 1 through December 4 (dates below). Paul Little got a chance to speak to Hawksley last week ahead of his month-long excursion across the country, and during their in-depth chat they talked about his return to Europe the past couple years, the music and influence of the 1980s on his last release and his upcoming record, the idea of "less rage, more tears", the destructiveness of fame, his sense of gratitude heading into this tour, and what his trusted piano player Mr. Lonely has meant to him musically and personally over the years.
A great honour to crack the mind of audio connoisseur and studio lab scientist, James Paul. From both sides of the mixing board, James Paul's work over the last 30+ years has made a big impact on Canadian music. His work producing records for Hawksley Workman, Chris Warren, Jack Breakfast, and many more...to his new electronic project, Homo Trans Futura, we get into the inner-workings with James Paul in this epic Episode 73!
Derrick and Matt Where lucky enough to get to sit down with Hawksley Workman while in town for a string of shows. Hawksley and the boys talked about everything from music today, to paintings of The Queen. The format for this episode was a little different. So instead of off the floor acoustic songs, we took a couple songs from Hawksley's Shepody House show that followed the episode and are releasing them exclusively on this podcast.....you don't want to miss this one!

Hawksley Workman talks about his new album 'Median Age Wasteland' on episode #34 hosted by Drew Khan & Sarah Burke. He details falling back in-love with songwriting, working with producer Murray A. Lightburn of The Dears, and that time he peed his pants growing up... https://twitter.com/masstolight https://www.facebook.com/WorkmanHawksley/ http://hawksleyworkman.com/ https://youtu.be/F28_V_Wd8c0
Erin Costelo, the Halifax NS based keyboard playing singer-songwriter, composer and producer, is about to release another soulful R&B masterpiece, “Sweet Marie”, the follow up to 2016’s critically acclaimed “Down Below The Status Quo” — one of our favourite albums of that year. The new album (album number 5), featuring 10 songs recorded in 10 days last winter in a house by the sea in Little Harbour NS, was produced by Erin Costelo and also features Glenn Milchem (Blue Rodeo) on Drums, Anna Ruddick on bass (Randy Bachman, Ben Caplan), Leith Fleming-Smith (Matt Mays, Hawksley Workman) on organ and Erin’s long-time partner, Clive MacNutt on guitars. Leanne Hoffman and Kwento supply backing vocals, and there are also guest appearances by the Blue Engine String Quartet, Andrew MacKelvie on saxophone and flute, and Andrew Jackson on trombone. A ‘making of the album’ documentary directed by Juno-winning songwriter Amelia Curran is due to air on CBC TV this fall. We caught up with Erin Costelo on the road to chat about the new project. For more information and upcoming tour dates across Canada and the US and into Europe, visit http://erincostelo.com. Photo: Mat Dunlap. Music: Erin Costelo “Lights Down Low”, “All In Your Head” and “My Love” from “Sweet Marie” (2018, Venue Records).
This week's requests have us hitting some highs and lows on our list! "A House Or Maybe a Boat" by Hawksley Workman feels like a pleasant dream, while "Rudolph Chewed Off" by Dragon Boy Suede feels exactly like listening to a comedy rap about a guy getting his privates mutilated by Santa's reindeer. Also RJ gets like, just super heated bout ranch dressing. Thank you to Richard for these requests!

On Sept. 28th, we're bringing you interviews with a pair of special Canadian songwriters. Hawksley Workman checks in to chat about honouring Bruce Cockburn at the recent 2017 Canadian Songwriters' Hall of Fame induction ceremony at Massey Hall. We also speak with the versatile musician and producer about how his jazz fusion musical foundation steered his songwriting, how failing to meet commercial expectations on his major label debut changed his career outlook, and more. And in something of a reprise from one of our favourite artist interviews of 2017, John Cody joins us for a quick chat over a cigarette about triumphing over challenges this year, and how he's currently putting music ahead of pretty much everything else in his life.
Take a sneak-peak into Friendly Rich's 11th studio recording, The Great Blue Heron. Glimpses into the recording, featuring interviews with Hawksley Workman, Kevin Breit, and Greg "Gerg" Dawson. The Great Blue Heron release date is September 14th, with all live dates posted at friendlyrich.com
Cary Pratt is Prairie Cat. He's also a mainstay of the Vancouver music scene. He's worked with many musicians over the years, most notably as the percussionist in the indie rock "supergroup" called Mounties (the band formed by indie rock legends Steve Bays, Ryan Dahle and Hawksley Workman). He's just released his latest Prairie Cat record, called ...Is Cary Pratt. Cary and I chilled with some beers on the busy patio of the east Vancouver's R&B Ale & Pizza House for a nice summertime hang session. How did an encounter with death change this new record? How did Cary and buddy Ryan Dahle split co-producing the new record? Does Cary worry getting a call about about any surprise children from his misspent youth? How did he escape the "drum guy stuff" on his earlier records? What does Cary do when he gets unwarranted advice? How did working as the general manger of Vancouver's legendary Vogue Theatre change his perception of the music industry? What is Cary's favorite type of beer? You'll have to listen to find out! Tracks played on the podcast edition of the show... 1) Prairie Cat, ...Is Cary Pratt (2017) "Leave a Note" 2) Ryan Dahle, Irrational Anthems (2009) "Chop Chop" (partial/background) 3) Prairie Cat, ...Is Cary Pratt (2017) "Crib Talk" 4) Prairie Cat, It Began/Ended With Sparks (2009) "Meanest Genius" 5) Prairie Cat, ...Is Cary Pratt (2017) "Leaving Today" 6) Prairie Cat, Who Knows Where to Begin? This week we talk about the Frigg Off Peckers Tour, play some classic 95 jams and play a game called Workin Hard or Hawksley Workman?
This week, we chat with the musical genius Hawksley Workman, from his studio in Burk's Falls. We talk about his incredible career in music, touring, gardening, and much more.
This Ep: Super Special Pursuit Guest Allan Reid - President & CEO - CARAS, The JUNO Awards & MusiCounts GA tries hard to act nonchalant and professional as he hosts this week's conversation with Allan Reid. Not only is he the President & CEO of The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, the Music Counts charity & a "little" thing called The JUNO Awards [that's the Canadian equivalent of the Grammy Awards for our non-Canadian friends!] but "AR" used to be THE A&R man ["Artists & repertoire"] at A&M Records [now Universal Music Canada] & was "instrumental" in the careers of artists such as Ashley MacIsaac, Hawksley Workman, Hedley, Sam Roberts, The Tragically Hip, Sarah Harmer & more. He was also responsible for signing...you guessed it, Jann Arden, to a life changing record deal! Big deal...the real question is can this renaissance record man actually help us in the #RelentlessPursuit of Jann Arden? Listen for the answer to that question along with anecdotes about Jann, Johnny Reid, Gord Bamford & The JUNOS in this all new episode! Caution: Exceedingly uplifting & excellent episode. Listeners subject to bouts of euphoria & excitement. Musically speaking.
Mounties (the band) is often called a Canadian indie supergroup because it's made up of an all-star lineup from the Canuck rock 'n' roll landscape: Steve Bays (from Hot Hot Heat), Ryan Dahle (from Age of Electric and Limblifter) and solo rocker Hawksley Workman. The night I hung out with Steve and Hawksley in Steve's SUV, the guys told me that all Mounties tracks begin with a box of wine and a jam session. (How awesome does that sound?) Steve and Hawksley were very talkative and it was hard to get them to stay on point once they started on a topic. What's the best (and worst) part of working with other successful and established musicians? Which other supergroup didn't work for Hawksley and Steve (as fans)? Who would they like to add to thier supergroup? How sexy is Mounties bassist Parker Bossley? What's the best brand of box wine to drink while jamming? We chat about all this and more! Tracks played on the show... 1) Mounties, Thrash Rock Legacy (2014) "Headphones" 2) Mounties, Thrash Rock Legacy (2014) "Pretty Respectable" 3) Mounties, Thrash Rock Legacy (2014) "Tokyo Summer" 4) Mounties, Thrash Rock Legacy (2014) "Waking Up On Time" ALL songs CANCON
Vancouver's Cary Pratt makes music under the name Prairie Cat. (I wonder how he came up with that stage name?) His music is best described as quirky indie pop and it sounds like the soundtrack to a Jason Segel movie where Segel plays Kermit the Frog singing about his adorable romantic misadventures. Cary is also the percussionist in Mounties, the Canadian indie supergroup formed by Hawksley Workman, Steve Bays and Ryan Dahle. His superstar bosses actually encouraged him to finish and release his latest record Who Knows Where to Begin? I hung out for a bit with Cary in an alley outside of Vancouver's The Emerald Supper Club. What gets Cary drooling? What's it like being a musician and dating in his 30s? How did Cary end up with chocolate cake on his lap? Who crashes our interview? What does a Prairie Cat sound like anyway? Listen to our chat to find out all the answers! Tracks played on the show... 1) Prairie Cat, Who Knows Where to Begin? (2014) "Got Nothin'" 2) Mounties, Thrash Rock Legacy (2014) "Headphones" (background) 3) Prairie Cat, Who Knows Where to Begin? (2014) "No Bedroom" 4) Prairie Cat, Who Knows Where to Begin? (2014) "Beautiful Baby" (background/partial) 5) Prairie Cat, Attacks (2007) "Better Friends Than Lovers" 6) Prairie Cat, Who Knows Where to Begin? (2014) "On a Lamb" ALL songs CANCON
Canadian rock singer-songwriter Hawksley Workman chats with Scene & Heard host Stuart Derdeyn about his music and the critical acclaim he's received for his blend of cabaret pop and glam rock.
We're doing something a little differently this week and bringing you a conversation Luke Jacob Thiessen had with iconic Canadian singer-songwriter Hawksley Workman about his new album and the upcoming Interstellar Rodeo festival at the Forks. Luke originally used this interview for a piece he wrote in the Uniter, but we've combined the audio with some of Hawksley Workman's songs to make it more ‘in the style of' our usual episodes. Luke is actually a past guest on our show himself, and you can check out his music at lukejacob.bandcamp.com and follow him on Twitter @ljthiessen.

We're all about Generation Next Live (http://generationnextlive.com) on this week's show, which features interviews with The Mohrs, The Rathburns, and Dead Projectionists. All three bands are set to take place in the March 5th edition of GNL, happening at The Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto. The Mohrs' latest is called "Kings Of Nowhere," produced in rural Ontario at Hawksley Workman's studio with the man himself. As for The Rathburns, they'll be releasing their upcoming EP at this very show. There are plenty of video teasers online to get you caught up.. Finally, the Dead Projectionists just signed on with The Agency Group and relaunched their website in anticipation of what's sure to be a good year.
Mounties paid us a visit in this episode. Not the RCMP, but the Canadian supergroup featuring Hawksley Workman, Ryan Dahle, and Steve Bays. We talked about funny dads, memorizing comedy routines, the ugly side of the music business, Hall and Oates, boogie-woogie, the name 'Squamish', and growing up in the '40s. Rock on.
Musician Hawksley Workman joins us to talk savage housecats, flat tires, and haunted schools.
This week's episode is a special one - especially if you're a fan of the multi-talented Hawksley Workman. To kick things off, Andrew and Mike will round up the latest news and interesting stories to have hit the wire in the last week. Then, we have PEI singer/songwtier/stand-up gal Ashley Condon in the hot seat for CM's 20 Questions. Ashley just received her second Canadian Folk Music Award nomination, this one surrounding the release of her second full-length, This Great Compromise, proudced by CM contributor David Francey, an acclaimed writer in his own right. Then, CM Catches Up With... Mr. Hawksley Workman for one of our most in-depth and explorative interviews yet. We'll talk about his latest work, the one-man show "The God That Comes," along with a bit about his on-the-rise side outlet Mounties, plus things like music journalism, extracting joy from everyday life, and plenty more. It's a long one, but should be a lot of fun...
Hot Hot Heat front man Steve Bays and The Gay Nineties bassist Parker Bossley comprise Fur Trade an electro-tinged pop act whose membership also boasts Hawksley Workman and Ryan Dahle. The band dropped its debut release Don’t Get Heavy on July 23 on Last Gang Records and found time in between duties with all of […]
Talk about starting with a bang. Adaline achieves near Judy Garland levels of melodrama on “That’s What You Do Best”, the stately electro-torch song that opens her new album, Modern Romantics. But she doesn’t get there without boxing your ears with wiggy sax (from Shuffle Demon Richard Underhill) and unhinged guitar solos (by Hawksley Workman) on the way. It’s what Adaline does best; elegant structures that happen to be wildly hooky. “It’s a pop record,” she says of her sophomore effort, “but certainly not straight down the middle. I have pop sensibilities, but I hope I come across as a little deeper than a pop tart.” Deeper by orders of magnitude, based on the sheer stylistic scope of Modern Romantics
