Our guest this week is songwriter, storyteller and singer with a one-of-a kind voice, Ron Sexsmith. I think the older I get, the clearer those memories become—and the more precious,”  Friday of this week he released his 18th album Hangover Terrace. It's a wonderfully complex album born during Ron's extended stay in the UK after his Sexsmith at Sixty tour. Recorded at London's Eastcote Studios with longtime producer Martin Terefe, the sessions marked a turning point—ushering in a more introspective sound.  “This record speaks to the hangover I feel from the last few years of pandemic and life knocking us around,”   Gone is the gentle optimism of his recent work, The Vivian Line & Hermitage—Hangover Terrace is marked by personal loss, shifting friendships, and emotional grit. Ron Sexsmith proves, once again, that no one captures life's quiet truths quite like he can. “The version of me that wrote those early records couldn't write these songs,” he says. “Don't give up. Stay focused on what's real.” There was a celebration of Gordon Lightfoot and his songs at Massey Hall not too long ago. Missing was the biggest fan of Gord, Ron Sexsmith. Ron organized his own celebration for Gord at Hugh's Room in Toronto from Jan 31 to Feb 2. It was all Gord and each show was sold out.   For the Mulligan Stew Podcast and the Terry David Mulligan YouTube Channel, Ron lays the whole story out.  He also takes us through songs like  Easy for you to say "I wear my heart on my sleeve, where's you heart at? Cigarette and Cocktail "what comes for us, we can't outrun" Damn well please - "I've got one life, that's all I know"   Burgoyne Woods "up to no good in Burgoyne Woods. A band of misfits from the land of hosers." Must be something wrong with her "she says I'm lovely but the mirror says otherwise"   Ron Sexsmith  tour dates include Oct 31  Festival Place Sherwood Park Nov 1 The Grand Calgary Nov 4 The Winspear.  Sidney BC Nov 5 Parksville, Vancouver Island Nov 7 The Hollywood,   Vancouver.

"Hangover Terrace" The Ontario-born Ron Sexsmith is one of the great musical treasures on this weird and troubled planet. And we need him now more than ever. Over the course of his decorated career, the three-time Juno award-winning singer/songwriter has put out close to twenty winning albums and here's a quick note about that--his discography is perfect with not even a trace of a dip of quality. In fact, every album seems to top the last one, which is saying a lot because every album is absolutely brilliant. If this sounds like hyperbole, it's not. From his self-titled album to Cobblestone Runway to Retriever to Blue Boy to Carousel One to his brand new record Hangover Terrace, which is one of the greatest album titles ever, by the way, Ron Sexsmith always delivers the goods. It's hard to think of a musician who sings with such elegant precision and poetic finesse. Like Sinatra or Costello, his phrasing is unique and distinct--all it takes is a syllable of a song and you know instantly know it's him. He's toured with John Hiatt, Squeeze, Coldplay and Nick Lowe and his songs have been covered by folks like Rod Stewart, Nick Lowe, Emmy Lou Harris, Feist, Michael Buble, and Stevie Nicks. His 2017 novel Deer Life, A Fairy Tale is just wonderful and this year he made his theatrical composer debut with the internationally renowned Stratford Festival production of ‘As You Like It' in Stratford, Ontario, Canada. But back to Hangover Terrace. A moving and deeply stirring 14-track song cycle, Hangover Terrace is filled with dark whimsy, wistful ballads and mid-tempo magic. Sexsmith's fluid and free flowing voice is untouched by time, his delivery as free flowing and and as a result this is an album of emotional exactitude and pure indie soul. And this conversation is a real joy. www.ronsexmith.com (http://www.ronsexmith.com) www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) https://podcast.feedspot.com/california_music_podcasts/ https://podcast.feedspot.com/california_art_podcasts/ IG + BLUESKY: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

On the Saturday August 23 edition of The Richard Crouse Show we meet New York Times bestselling author Joy Fielding. With a career spanning over four decades, she has eraned readers with her ability to weave intricate plots, complex characters, and emotional depth. Known for bestsellers like “See Jane Run,” “Don't Cry Now,” and “Someone Is Watching,” Fielding explores themes of relationships, betrayal, and human resilience. Today we’ll talk about her latest novel, the psychological thriller “Jenny Cooper Has a Secret.” The book follows a 76-year-old widow named Linda who visits Legacy Place, a memory care facility where she meets 92-year-old Jenny Cooper, a dementia patient who shocks Linda with a confession: “I kill people.” Initially dismissing it as delusion, Linda grows intrigued as Jenny lucidly recounts tales of her victims—mostly men who wronged her. When a resident dies under seemingly natural circumstances, Linda begins to question whether Jenny’s claims might hold truth. Then, we’ll hang out with singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith. Often called a “songwriter’s songwriter,” his fans include Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello, Leonard Cohen and many, many others. He’s release 17 albums to date, and collaborated with producers like Daniel Lanois, Mitchell Froom and Bob Rock. His songwriting appears on albums from Rod Stewart, Michael Bublé, k.d. lang, Emmylou Harris and Feist. Today we talk about his latest album, “Hangover Terrace,” The album was sparked during Ron’s extended stay in the UK in late 2024, following his Sexsmith at Sixty tour. Inspired by time spent recording at London’s Eastcote Studios, Ron says the album was inspired by “the hangover I feel from the last few years of pandemic and life knocking us around.”

As Groundhog Day approaches, we recognize the cultural association of the holiday with the concept of repetition and take some repeat requester's requests! The two songs suggested by longtime listener Liam present us with two distinct flavours -- though both are very much of the year 2020, and both come to us from Scottish artists. "Humans Are Not Worth Saving" by Michael M is a catchy little pop-punk ditty about immortal zombie Santa having an existential crisis (like you do). On a completely different emotional wavelength, "(I Wish You) Peace In Your Heart" by Blue Rose Code featuring Karine Polwart is a heartfelt gift offering solace in hard times. The ranking music in this episode is "Maybe This Christmas" by Ron Sexsmith. Thank you to Liam for these requests!

Ron Sexsmith says “I'm not really shy, I'm just Canadian”. He's a singer-songwriter who has never had a top 40 hit, is not rich, but is deeply admired by the people he admires most. Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello, and Gordon Lightfoot, are all, were all, huge fans. Sexmsith's songs, like “Secret Heart”, have been performed by everyone from Rod Stewart to Feist to Nick Lowe.We spoke to him as he was about to headline at Toronto's storybook Massey Hall. When Ron was a kid and couldn't afford a ticket, he'd hang outside to see his heroes, now he's on the same stage. There's no Taylor Swift action, but if you look carefully, he does move his hips! And Ron is happy. He left the bright lights of Toronto and moved to Stratford where he just recorded his 18th album, “The Vivian Line”. Ron's wife Colleen had to plug in his computer, but you should see him on Twitter/X. The puns are excruciatingly funny, or maybe just excruciating! The van they were traveling in encountered an obstacle in the form of a large, brightly lit, saucer-shaped object resting on the road ahead of them. As they stared in wonder, they had no idea that it wouldn't be long before they would meet the occupants... Recently, after 33 years of silence, Steve Boucher finally decided to go public in 2016. Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

Producer and engineer Bob Rock is on the show this week. Bob is originally from Winnipeg, but he cut his teeth in the late 70's and early 80's Vancouver punk rock scene while working at Little Mountain Studios. While Bob was working on original music and starting to achieve success with his band The Payolas, he continued his day job at the studio, which started to snowball into a string of successful engineering and mixing gigs, mostly with Bruce Fairbairn. These included albums for Prism, Loverboy and Honeymoon Suite. The success of those Canadian albums led to the same team getting asked to make records for Aerosmith and Bon Jovi, after which Bob struck out on his own to produce albums for Motley Crue, The Cult and of course, Metallica. In more recent years, Bob has worked on records for The Tragically Hip, Michael Buble, Jann Arden, Ron Sexsmith and many more. But at the end of the day, Bob is just a huge music nerd, loves guitars and amps, and is obsessive about tones and the path to find them. We got into all of it and had a great conversation. Enjoy!Listen to the accompanying playlist for this episode here, which features the artist's own music, plus many of the songs that were discussed during the show. This episode is brought to you by Izotope - check out their amazing recording software at: www.izotope.comThanks for your support, and your fearless host, Steve Dawson can be found at: www.stevedawson.ca
