In this episode of the Tasty Brew Music Podcast, I welcome Terra Spencer, a gifted songwriter from Windsor, Nova Scotia. Howard Dolginoff, presenter of the Labyrinth House Concert Series, was kind enough to make the introduction and bring Terra into the KKFI studios prior to her run of shows in the Heartland. Ron Sexsmith shares: Raised on the mud banks of the Avon River, award-winning Nova Scotian funeral director-turned-songwriter Terra Spencer charms audiences with her deft guitar, gospel piano, butterscotch voice, crackling wit, and wood-paneled warmth. Her startlingly intimate songs have caught the eye of collaborators including David Francey, Ben Caplan, and Matt Andersen. Every show is a knee-to-knee conversation with a natural storyteller. “The real deal.”  Terra blends folk, country and soul in a way that feels both timeless and personal that has garnered her a devoted following. Terra shares a performance with us here and we have a conversation about her journey from funeral director to troubadour, the stories behind her lyrics and what inspires her songwriting. So sit back...relax...and enjoy this offering of the Tasty Brew with Terra Spencer!

The Kinks was one of the most influential bands to come out of England in the 60s, with a career that lasted up through the late 90s. Their style and sound changed numerous times over the decades and they amassed a legion of dedicated fans. We talk with author / editor Chris Kocher about his new book, Thank You For The Days: Fans Of The Kinks Share 60 Years Of Stories, which celebrates the band's legacy and fans' special connection to it. Among the contributors are Ron Sexsmith, Glen Burtnick, John Wesley Harding, Crouch End Festival Chorus musical director David Temple, plus touring musicians, fan club leaders, and "average Joe" fans with extraordinary stories.  Thank You For The Days is currently available in the UK and will be released in the US in March 2025. As Groundhog Day approaches, we recognize the cultural association of the holiday with the concept of repetition and take some repeat requester's requests! The two songs suggested by longtime listener Liam present us with two distinct flavours -- though both are very much of the year 2020, and both come to us from Scottish artists. "Humans Are Not Worth Saving" by Michael M is a catchy little pop-punk ditty about immortal zombie Santa having an existential crisis (like you do). On a completely different emotional wavelength, "(I Wish You) Peace In Your Heart" by Blue Rose Code featuring Karine Polwart is a heartfelt gift offering solace in hard times. The ranking music in this episode is "Maybe This Christmas" by Ron Sexsmith. Thank you to Liam for these requests!

The comedian and actor John Bishop is about to head off on a tour celebrating 25 years in stand up - a quarter century since he took to the stage on a whim and ended up one of the UK's favourite stars. The explorer Lucy Shepherd is more likely to be found fighting off venomous spiders than hecklers. For her latest TV series she's embarked on a never before completed journey across Guyana. How did she cope with the threat of trench foot, zero daylight and the ominous warnings from the locals - "don't go, you might not get back"? The Comic and podcaster Grace Campbell is also one for exploration but hers involve the world of dating and parties in her tour - On Heat. She'll be competing on tall tales and ominous warnings, no doubt. And broadcaster and columnist Adrian Chiles will cast a cool eye on proceedings as he does in his much-shared newspaper articles on chewy topics such as home urinals, favourite spoons and the biggie - we can go to the moon, so why can't we stop my glasses sliding down my nose? Ron Sexsmith says “I'm not really shy, I'm just Canadian”. He's a singer-songwriter who has never had a top 40 hit, is not rich, but is deeply admired by the people he admires most. Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello, and Gordon Lightfoot, are all, were all, huge fans. Sexmsith's songs, like “Secret Heart”, have been performed by everyone from Rod Stewart to Feist to Nick Lowe.We spoke to him as he was about to headline at Toronto's storybook Massey Hall. When Ron was a kid and couldn't afford a ticket, he'd hang outside to see his heroes, now he's on the same stage. There's no Taylor Swift action, but if you look carefully, he does move his hips! And Ron is happy. He left the bright lights of Toronto and moved to Stratford where he just recorded his 18th album, “The Vivian Line”. As a producer and mixer Joes credits include: Ben Folds Five's, The Hush Kids, Zac Clark, Drew Holcolmb, Chuck Mead, Josh Rouse, Courtney Jaye, Matt Wertz, William Tyler, The Silver Seas and The Pierces and when the Grammy Award-winning band Fun needed orchestral recording for its Grammy performance, they called on Joe. After he “couldn't get arrested” in the 80s, post-grunge opened a window through which a then 30-year old Ron Sexsmith could climb. With his sincere, low-key ballads and simple songs straight from the heart, as was his 1995 self-titled debut. Produced by legend Mitchell Froom, it was a stripped back affair but also with the signature sounds of Froom and his engineer collaborator Tchad Blake (favourites of the crew here at The Art of Longevity). Those songs came as an antidote to the loudness of grunge and the hubris of Britpop. Sexsmith was a pioneer of a style that paved the way for a wave of troubadours including Teddy Thompson, Josh Ritter, Rufus Wainwright and many more. Of all places he was signed to Interscope - then one of the world's biggest major labels. “They didn't really know what to do with me. They called me a ‘cred artist'. Someone who had good good reviews and they could point to and say - 'we're not just pop' - so they could attract other real artists.”“I coasted on that for a while, but then around my third album (Whereabouts, 1999) I saw that it didn't mean anything to them any more. To have an artist that was just good to have around”. And so that early run came to an inevitable end as Ron was slammed into the wall of the ‘dropped artist'. By then though, he was into stride as a songwriter. No longer an apprentice to those amazing producers he has worked with, he was on his way to mastering the craft. Indeed, these days he describes himself as more of a problem solver than a songwriter. This songcraft is what connects Sexsmith to the greats. When I mention to him that Spotify pays him a compliment when its continuously play/radio function will follow one of his songs with Nick Lowe, Nick Drake or some other legend, his response is modest yet enlightening. “Well I didn't know that but one of the nicest things anyone ever said about me was what Randy Newman told Mitchell (Froom) that “I like Ron because he does the work”. And I thought, yeah that's true, I do do the work. That's what I try to do and for the most part. There's not a song I could play you where I'd think the song is terrible”.That's because none of them are. May I strongly suggest you sit back and enjoy the fruits of Ron Sexsmith's labour.Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

Producer and engineer Bob Rock is on the show this week. Bob is originally from Winnipeg, but he cut his teeth in the late 70's and early 80's Vancouver punk rock scene while working at Little Mountain Studios. While Bob was working on original music and starting to achieve success with his band The Payolas, he continued his day job at the studio, which started to snowball into a string of successful engineering and mixing gigs, mostly with Bruce Fairbairn. These included albums for Prism, Loverboy and Honeymoon Suite. The success of those Canadian albums led to the same team getting asked to make records for Aerosmith and Bon Jovi, after which Bob struck out on his own to produce albums for Motley Crue, The Cult and of course, Metallica. In more recent years, Bob has worked on records for The Tragically Hip, Michael Buble, Jann Arden, Ron Sexsmith and many more. But at the end of the day, Bob is just a huge music nerd, loves guitars and amps, and is obsessive about tones and the path to find them. We got into all of it and had a great conversation.
