Alex Banks is a Brighton-based DJ, producer, and multi-instrumentalist known for his intricate yet dancefloor-driven sound, inspired by the dense electronica of artists like Jon Hopkins and Max Cooper. Blending jungle, broken beat, and dubstep rhythms with techno textures and IDM melodies, his music is defined by masterful sound design—an expertise that has made him an in-demand engineer, composing for film, TV, and global brands like Nike and Honda. His latest Impermanence EP, released on Last Night on Earth, showcases his signature style, where tense drums and euphoric melodies merge into thoughtful electronic compositions.  On this Balance Selections, the English producer flexes with an exquisite two hours of scalpel-sharp dance music. Featuring tracks from Max Cooper, Floating Points, Tinlicker and more, this is a journey worth taking. @alexbanksmusic

Podcast Overview: In this conversation, Will Clarke and Yanis aka Dr. Dubplate discuss the evolution of the UK dance music scene, the influence of iconic venues like Plastic People, and the challenges faced by smaller venues in the current climate. Yanis shares his journey in music, the founding of his record label EC2A, and the innovative strategies he employed to build a community and support emerging artists. The discussion highlights the importance of grassroots culture in music and the impact of commercialism on the industry. In this engaging conversation, Yanis and Will Clarke explore the evolving landscape of the music industry, focusing on the importance of community, the resurgence of vinyl, and the innovations in music distribution. They discuss the pressures artists face in the digital age, the significance of supporting local economies, and theneed for genuine connections between fans and artists. The conversation emphasizes the importance of passion, persistence, and the value of tangible music experiences in a streaming-dominated world.Who Is Dr Dubplate: Be it viral moments during DJ sets or breaking down barriers for the new generation with his label ec2a, Dr Dubplate and the UK's new underground run closely alongside one another. Dr Dubplate's entry into dance music came as a teenager. Heavily influenced by his father – then manager of London institution Plastic People – he grew up absorbing Afrobeat, Rare Groove, House and Funk. Working the cloakroom on Thursday nights at Plastic People he was exposed to residencies and performances from some of the most esteemed artists – Theo Parrish, Four Tet and Floating Points to name a few- which paved the way for an education in and appreciation of UK Sound system and club culture. Dr Dubplate's DJ stripes were earned in Bristol, as promoter and resident for party series Piff where he played alongside artists such as Mall Grab, DJ Seinfeld and Hodge. In 2020 he established ec2a – a more personal project referencing his inspiration and upbringing. Emerging during the height of the new UK Garage scene, Yanis's debut as Dr Dubplate soon followed. With label and DJ projects running side by side, a following quickly formed, leading to bookings up and down the country when clubs re-opened, and a breakthrough year in 2021. A memorable headline B2B set with Interplanetary Criminal for Keep Hush, at their sold out summer festival, catapulted him into the eyes and ears of post-pandemic clubbers as did an ec2a Fabric RM3 takeover later that year. With a rich musical upbringing, it's no coincidence that Dr Dubplate's sets reflect his character; a positive, multi-genre taste with gun fingers as part of the blueprint and treating his crowds to everything from Gil Scott Heron to Kwengface, Dubstep to UK Funky and Trap.Join for updates: https://laylo.com/willclarke⏲ Follow Will Clarke ⏱https://djwillclarke.com/https://open.spotify.com/artist/1OmOdgwIzub8DYPxQYbbbi?si=hEx8GCJAR3mhhhWd_iSuewhttps://www.instagram.com/djwillclarkehttps://www.facebook.com/willclarkedjhttps://twitter.com/djwillclarkehttps://www.tiktok.com/@djwillclarke Hosted on Acast. LISAS is a DJ emerging from the New York techno scene whose expertise spans a multitude of roles. In this case Wear Many Hats. I met LISAS when MixMag came back to life and I was photographing an event where we crossed paths and knew she looked awfully familiar. It was because I saw LISAS play the night before opening up at Paragon for a Boy Harsher DJ set and friend and guest of the show, Promiseland with Pictureplane in the basement. LISAS has worked behind the scenes live sound for raves and festivals, as a sound engineer in recording studios alongside David Byrne, Floating Points, and Oneohtrix Point Never. Performed in The Rapture. When LISAS transformed into a DJ she already hit the ground running and has opened up for Boys Noize and closed for Justice. On January 26 of 2024, San Francisco Ballet premiered a commissioned work by Canadian American choreographer Aszure Barton. It was titled “Mere Mortals” and explored the science and ramifications of AI through the ancient myth of Pandora. With a brand-new score by world-renowned British electronica composer Sam Shepherd, aka Floating Points, and video and sound design by Barcelona-based Hamill Industries, “Mere Mortals” was a big gamble for new artistic director Tamara Rojo as she closed out her first season with the Ballet. It paid off. Not only was “Mere Mortals” a hit with critics, with the San Francisco Chronicle calling it “a passionate success,” but it also proved to be a box-office bonanza, so much so that San Francisco Ballet brought the production back to the stage just three months later for several encore performances. Perhaps more importantly, many in the audience were first-time ballet-goers, many of whom saw the piece more than once.In this arts climate when so many dance companies are struggling to get even their regular audiences back in the door, what was it about “Mere Mortals” that made it such a hit? In this interview, Aszure opens a window into her choreographic practice and how it may have contributed to an event equally invigorating to her dancers and her audience.Aszure is the artistic director of Aszure Barton & Artists, which she founded very early in her career as a creative outlet for the collaborative and anti-hierarchical instincts she'd had to repress in her dance education. Two decades later, Aszure Barton & Artists, which includes a core staff of creative collaborators, has created work all over the world with a wide array of artists and institutions, including Mikhai Baryshnikov, Nederlans Dans Theater and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Aszure is currently the choreographer in residence at Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and is also developing a new piece in partnership with trumpeter and composer Ambrose Akinmusire.

We've been having a look back through the Tape Notes archive to bring back some of our favourite early episodes that you may have missed. This selection is our conversation from November 2019, with Sam Shepard, Floating Points. EPISODE NOTES In this episode John heads to EMS4 studios in Shoreditch to chat with Floating Points a.k.a Sam Shepherd, about how he recorded and produced his latest release, Crush.  Talking from deep within Sam's musical laboratory, we peer behind the curtain and find out how Floating Points music is created and crafted, pulling apart some of the tracks from his second album along the way. We get to hear how live performance and classical music are a serious influence in his writing process in addition to experimenting with the impressive number of synths he's collected over the years. Geekery is in abundance in this episode.  Listen to find out why space was scant in Sam's student bedroom, who sick Anna actually is and why sometimes all you need is a Yamaha Reface CS in your backpack.  Tracks discussed: Last Bloom, Annasickmodualr, Bias. July 20, 2024, marks 10 years since Cork venue the Pavilion, run by Pat Conway, Stevie G and Joe Kelly, closed its doors. It left an indelible mark on me and so many music lovers. Friendships were formed there, ideas were hatched, bands were watched, and DJs filled the floors. On this episode of the TPOE podcast, a whole host of the people who loved the Pav recall the six years when the recession took hold of Ireland and the Pavilion opened its doors. The first gig was Evan Dando and the Lemonheads in April 2008. The following year, Kanye West and the xx both graced its stage and the Pav was up and running. Theo Parrish, King Britt, the Pharcyde, Roy Ayers, Floating Points, Franz Ferdinand Eddie Reader, Lee Fields, Candi Staton, NASA, Theesatisfaction, Shabazz Palaces, Sly and Robbie, Lonnie Liston Smith, and Rakim are just some of the big international acts who played the Pav in that time. It also hosted and supported so many Irish acts, from Altered Hours to Hozier, Saint Yorda to Gilla Band. There were club nights like Go Deep, Sunday Times and Floating Joints which called the Pav home over the years. We hear about all of these and more over the course of this episode charting one of the best venues the country has ever seen. Pure energy from one of electronic music's brightest lights: Sofia Kourtesis. Clamour had been building around the Peruvian-born, Berlin-based artist's poignant brand of house music following a string of EPs and 12"s, culminating in last year's Madres—a passionate, vulnerable and excellent album that resonated widely. Madres packed in rare specificity for a dancefloor record, combining paeans to the power of sound with direct tributes to the neurosurgeon who saved the life of Kourtesis' mother. (Kourtesis even took him clubbing in Berlin as an additional thank you.) The album's earworm melodies, sparkling production and approachable aura made it a snap favourite, helping launch Kourtesis from bubbling to breakthrough on the global stage. In both sound and impact, it mirrors another record: Swim, the 2010 classic made by Kourtesis' friend and mentor, Dan Snaith. Speaking of @caribouband: RA.943 kicks off with a brand new Sofia Kourtesis & Daphni collaboration, before powering through summer-ready cuts from LUXE, Floating Points, IceMorph, DJ ADHD and an old Oliver Lieb classic. Even as her reputation as a recording artist swells, this power-hour mix is a sharp reminder of Kourtesis' DJing chops, teeing up a victory-lap summer ahead. @sofia-kourtesis

Shabaka Hutchings is a celebrated saxophone player and a major figure in London's contemporary jazz scene. He was the bandleader for Sons of Kemet and Shabaka and the Ancestors, and part of the electronic jazz group The Comet Is Coming. But on New Year's Day of 2023, he announced he'd be putting down the saxophone for good and focusing on a new instrument: the flute. Starting with the Japanese shakuhachi and expanding to a variety of traditional flutes, he's now out with his first full-length album under his solo moniker of Shabaka. The album is called 'Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace,' and features collaborations with Carlos Niño, Laraaji, Andre 3000, Floating Points, Esperanza Spalding, Moses Sumney, and more. Shabaka talks with KEXP's Isabel Khalili about his transition from saxophone to flute and how it's helped him learn to release tension and relax into playing. He also discusses his thoughts on the term "Afrofuturism," how he's embraced Octavia Butler's ideas on the inevitability of change, what it means to heal through music, and his search for meaning outside of a Western colonial paradigm.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Though he's known for his fiery, raging performances with groups like Sons of Kemet, The Comet Is Coming, and Shabaka and The Ancestors, Shabaka Hutchings eases into a contemplative zone with his debut solo album, Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace.  Released on Impulse! Records and recorded at the legendary Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey—where John Coltrane cut A Love Supreme and many other jazz classics were committed to tape—the album finds Hutchings setting down his sax in favor of a variety of flutes and pondering questions about what it means to be, what it means to do, and how one gives themselves over to energizing forces. Joined by guests including Saul Williams, Euclid, Esperanza Spalding, Floating Points, Laraaji, poet Anum Iyapo, Carlos Nino, and fellow flute devotee André 3000, Hutchings drifts into a gentle, new age-inspired zone, blending spiritual jazz expression with ambient sensibilities.  “What does it mean to have music of spiritual substance?“What does it mean to be spiritual? What is spirit?” This week on Transmissions, Shabaka Hutchings joins us to discuss that force, his shift toward the flute, the influence of Outkast, and connecting with his father on a creative level.  Transmissions is a part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network. Christian and Justin chat with founding Gang Gang Dance member Brian DeGraw (13:04) about the early 00s experimental scene in New York City that included groups like Animal Collective and Black Dice—an alternate history of Meet Me in the Bathroom. They discuss moving from DC to NYC in '98, being a Manhattan band in a Brooklyn scene, feeling unattached to solo work, piano playing as meditation, and writing music for film. This episode includes snippets of unreleased solo music from  DeGraw. Other topics include record-breaking drum circles, cruise ship concerts during a solar eclipse, and how a freak tragedy years ago birthed a well of creativity for Brian and his friends. Prior to the interview, the boys discuss Shabaka's new single featuring Floating Points and Laraaji, which Animal Collective record would work as a Broadway stage adaptation, what the AC boys are up to at the moment, and  more. Unlock Part 2 of our conversation with Brian over at our Patreon! This week, Imperfect Paradise is featuring Part 1 & Part 2 of a four-part series from How To LA.  Unsheltered life in L.A. can be dangerous and even deadly — and there has been a massive increase in the death rate for unhoused people in the county over the last few years. There is work being done by the mayor's office to get people off the street and into temporary housing. But the promise of services — whether in the form of housing, treatment for substance addiction, or mental health counseling — cannot help if people aren't alive in 6 months, a year — or 5 — to receive them. While they wait, many unhoused people have come to rely on mutual aid volunteers to cover their immediate needs, from overdose prevention to fresh drinking water. In this mini-series from How To LA, host Brian De Los Santos and producer Evan Jacoby explore what these mutual aid groups actually do for our unhoused neighbors, and where these service gaps come from in the first place.
