"Always having an open door to the success of other people - that's what Andy and Josh do in Canada...it's so beautiful". — Noel WebbThe longest serving drummer of Skydiggers, Noel Webb is celebrating 20 years with the band, and now considers them "family". He says playing with the band is like "having dinner together". Born in Birmingham, England, Noel's attraction to the drums started at a very early age, when he would run in the back yard wielding a stick, banging on random (inanimate) objects, and keeping time with the radio hits of the day. When real drum sticks arrived as a gift from a brother, an obsession was hatched. Noel's passion for percussion led him to a degree in Orchestral Composition from Laurier University.Despite his considerable achievements in education, and remarkable accomplishments in the business world, Noel remains grateful for the life lessons that says he continues to learn from his “boss” Andy. He believes strongly in "serving the art” as the songs develop and change with the evolution of the band. When asked what he's learned in his 20 years with the band, the answer is "lead with love". Cheers to that.Available now: Listen to "Dreams and Second Chances" (single)Watch the lyric video for "Snow Blind"Music in this episode:"Dreams and Second Chances" - Skydiggers (Single, 2025)"Broken Year" - Skydiggers (Dreams and Second Chances, May 9, 2025)"One Maybe Two Maybe" - Skydiggers (Dreams and Second Chances, May 9, 2025)"Je T'aime Toujours, Mon Amour" - Skydiggers (Bide Your Time, 2023)Stream, download, and follow SkydiggersEmployee of the Myth is brought to you by Skydiggers ProductionsFeaturing: Andy Maize and Josh FinlaysonProducer & co-host: Joel StewartHost and Editor: Jane Gowan (Music Buddy)Audio Engineer: Tim Vesely

"With Andy and Josh, it was - 'you're part of the band'. I still remember one of the early shows, Andy said at the end of the show on the microphone - 'we are all Skydiggers'. That resonated with me. So, [they were not only] very welcoming, but they gave us a lot of latitude—everyone—to do what they needed to do". — Derrick BradyA mainstay of the Skydiggers sound for 12 or so years now, Derrick Brady was offered the bass seat after the departure of the much-loved Ron Macey (Skydiggers' original bass player). Those were not easy shoes to fill, but Derrick's familiarity with the songs, and his existing friendship with Andy and Josh made him a natural fit. His musical maturity and seasoned chops add depth, groove, and —when necessary—space. When not on the stage, you can find him holding court in the kitchen, cooking up a mean spaghetti sauce. What, exactly, is mastering? Is it a potion? A spell? A hoax? The truth is, it's a subtle and precise art, and a key element of quality music production. It is music's "x-factor", its "special sauce". Despite often being perceived as some kind of magic, mastering is, in fact, very real, as are the people who do it for a living. Case in point, Grammy-nominated and Juno Award-winning mastering engineer João Carvalho. João is the founder of João Carvalho Mastering, and co-owner of Revolution Recording in Toronto, Canada. Designed by Martin Pilchner, João's mastering studio has been labelled "...the most acoustically perfect mastering room in Canada". Since the early 2000s, João has built a massive client list, working with much-loved artists such as Sloan, Rose Cousins, Skydiggers, City and Colour, Tanya Tagaq, Donovan Woods, Hayden, Monique Barry, Blue Rodeo, Metric, Serena Ryder, The Tragically Hip, Damhnait Doyle, and Rush...the list goes on and on... In this episode, João explains his craft, the building of his world class studio, working with the likes of Rose Cousins and Sloan, the utility of a great Weezer track, and why "Claire" by Rheostatics is one of the greatest songs of all time. Joining the conversation is Music Buddy co-producer Tim Vesely (Rheostatics, The Violet Archers), who has known João since the 90s, and worked with him on many projects over the years. Music in this episode:"Music is The Message" - Rheostatics (Here Come the Wolves, 2019)"Claire" - Rheostatics (Introducing Happiness, 1995)"Chains" - Rose Cousins (Natural Conclusion, 2017)"Beverly Hills" - Weezer (Make Believe, 2005)"The Lines You Amend" - Sloan (One Chord to Another, Deluxe Reissue, 2016)Support the showPlease help us keep the pod rocking and rolling with a donation. "It's lovely to think of being able to walk into a situation with 20 years of hindsight now...I really felt a part of it...I was able to bring my own ideas, right from the start" — Michael Johnston20 years ago, keyboardist/songwriter Michael Johnston was—like so many of us—a Skydiggers fan. However, being a sideman in one of his favourite bands hadn't occured to him, since—at that point—he was performing his own material and working mostly as a solo artist under his own name. Then one day Andy and Josh asked him to sit in for a few songs, and he gradually found himself living in what he refers to as an "imaginary dream state".  Working from scratch, he developed keyboard parts that complemented the songs he'd come to know and love. Today, he's an integral part of the Skydiggers sound, and also a co-writer on several tracks. This interview was recorded at The Tragically Hip's Bathouse Studio in Bath, Ontario, during the recording of Skydiggers new album Dreams and Second Chances (available everywhere May 9, 2025). Available now: Listen to "Dreams and Second Chances" (single)Watch the lyric video for "Snow Blind"Music in this episode:"Dreams and Second Chances" - Skydiggers (Single, 2025)"Hello Beautiful Life" - Skydiggers (City of Sirens, 208)"I Love You, Too, Maybe" - Skydiggers (Dreams and Second Chances, May 9, 2025)"Quiet Mind" - Skydiggers (Dreams and Second Chances, May 9, 2025)"Je T'aime Toujours, Mon Amour" - Skydiggers (Bide Your Time, 2023)FYI: Skydiggers Dakota Sessions (as mentioned in the conversation) can be found on the band's YouTube ChannelStream, download, and follow SkydiggersEmployee of the Myth is brought to you by Skydiggers ProductionsFeaturing: Andy Maize and Josh FinlaysonProducer & co-host: Joel StewartHost and Editor: Jane Gowan (Music Buddy)Audio Engineer: Tim Vesely

"In Skydiggers, I can really be myself...there's a lot of trust" — Aaron ComeauGuitarist Aaron Comeau can't really pinpoint a time when he was officially in the band, but one day he got up to guest at the annual Christmas show, and—as he puts it—he "never left the stage". A multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter and producer in his own right, Comeau comes by his musical talents honestly: his mother is a piano teacher and taught him how to play from an early age, and his grandfather played clarinet and violin.  Aaron's natural curiosity and musical inclination has guided him towards a life of creativity, collaboration, and the satisfaction of making music with amazing people. His keen sense of what's needed in a song, and how best to "fit in" to the music, has made him an indispensable part of the Skydiggers' sound for the better part of 10 years. This interview was recorded at The Tragically Hip's Bathouse Studio in Bath, Ontario, during the recording of Skydiggers new album Dreams and Second Chances (available everywhere May 9, 2025). Available now:Listen to "Dreams and Second Chances" (single)Watch the lyric video for "Snow Blind"Music in this episode:"Dreams and Second Chances" - Skydiggers (Single, 2025)"Feel a Whole Lot Better" - Skydiggers (Here Without You - The Songs of Gene Clark, 2020)"Brother Can You Spare a Dime" - (Single, 2020)"Tomorrow, Today" - Aaron Comeau (Infinity Trials, 2024)"Start Again" - Skydiggers (Dreams and Second Chances, May 9, 2025)"Je T'aime Toujours, Mon Amour" - Skydiggers (Bide Your Time, 2023)Stream, download, and follow SkydiggersEmployee of the Myth is brought to you by Skydiggers ProductionsFeaturing: Andy Maize and Josh FinlaysonProducer & co-host: Joel StewartHost and Editor: Jane Gowan (Music Buddy)Audio Engineer: Tim Vesely

Whether it's creating Skydiggers classics with his long-time musical compadre Andy Maize, co-writing songs with heavy-hitters in Nashville, or composing music for television, Josh Finlayson places a high value on being a  collaborator. In Josh's words, "...no one has the best ideas always. Anyone can have the best idea at any given moment, and to recognize [that] is what being a good collaborator is all about..."Aside from his 30+ years creating with Andy and Skydiggers, one of Josh's most significant collaborations to date was with his good friend, the late Gord Downie of The Tragically Hip. Josh co-produced and performed on Gord's first solo album, Coke Machine Glow, and remained a bandmate, creative sounding board, and trusted ally—witnessing Gord's fearless strength and boundless creative energy—until the singer's death in 2017 from brain cancer. In this episode, Josh opens up about that relationship, and what he calls "an incredible journey". Before becoming a co-founder of Skydiggers, guitarist/singer/songwriter Josh Finlayson developed a deep love of folk, country and roots music. While listening with admiration to Doc Watson, Chet Atkins, Gordon Lightfoot, Ian and Sylvia Tyson and others on his Dad's record player (or in the family station wagon),  his connection with the music bloomed. With the positive musical influences of his two older brothers, plus the help of a supportive guitar teacher, Josh gradually developed a sense of the musician and songwriter that he would become. When he and his brother's school friend—a certain singer named Andy Maize—began playing together, everything started to fall into place. The rest is Canadian music history.  Songs used in this episode:"Je t'aime Toujours, Mon Amour" - Skydiggers (Bide Your Time, 2023)"This Old Town" - Skydiggers (Restless, 1992)"Slow Burning Fire" - Restless (1992)"Why You Been Gone So Long" - Travis Good and Josh Finlayson  (live, at the launch of the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Legacy Room at So Hip It Hurts, Toronto, 2018).Stream, download, and follow SkydiggersEmployee of the Myth is brought to you by Skydiggers ProductionsFeaturing: Andy Maize and Josh FinlaysonProducer & co-host (Season 3): Joel StewartHost and Editor: Jane Gowan (Music Buddy)Audio Engineer: Tim Vesely

"… that is my story - incomplete, but mostly the truth. About 5 guys in a Honda, making music, making memories, with nothing to lose" — Andy Maize ("The Situation")With his new EP Goldslinger, Skydiggers co-founder Andy Maize is once again marking a milestone birthday with a triumphant solo release, and we find him hitting his groove, shaking his booty, and baring his soul.  With these 4 modern classics, Maize looks tenderly to the past while living fully and emphatically in the present. In this conversation with Jane Gowan and Joel Stewart, Andy guides us on a colourful journey that includes lakeside all-nighters, fake (h)its, mid-winter romance, a fight with a mascot, and a ragged young band in a (slightly soiled) minivan. As a member of the legendary rock band The Tragically Hip, Paul witnessed Skydiggers' ascent within the Canadian music scene. Much mutual admiration and inspiration ensued. Yes, yes, come in, please, get warm, sir! What's this now? You have some winter music for us? A dirge? Yes, the floor is yours: The wintry west extends his blast, And hail and rain does blaw; Or, the stormy north sends driving forth The blinding sleet and snaw: While tumbling brown, the burn comes down, And roars frae bank to brae; And bird and beast in covert rest, And pass the heartless day. The sweeping blast, the sky o'ercast The joyless winter-day, Let others fear, to me more dear Than all the pride of May: The tempest's howl, it soothes my soul, My griefs it seems to join; The leafless trees my fancy please, Their fate resembles mine! Thou Pow'r Supreme, whose mighty scheme These woes of mine fulfill, Here, firm, I rest, they must be best Because they are Thy will! Then all I want (O, do Thou grant This one request of mine!) Cowboy Junkies: Music Is The Drug - The Podcast

In this special episode we concentrate on "Townies: An Audioplay", the album put together by Michael Timmins and Andy Maize of Skydiggers in 2020 and we are joined by both of them to chart the writing and recording of a project that was initially interrupted, and then informed, by the first Covid lockdown that year. It also owes plenty to Mike's "Improvisations From The Between Time" album, which we also cover in the podcast. Set in motion by a conversation between the two, "Townies" was originally destined to be based around childhood memories. Lockdown halted the project and then,  on their return to the studio, the music developed a second act, focusing on a tumultuous year and all that that means. It's a fascinating journey and both Mike and Andy help guide you through it in this podcast.Termed an "audioplay", "Townies" is currently only available for download or streaming, as is "Improvisations From The Between Time" - if you haven't heard them yet, tune in, turn on and drop out...To make sure you don't miss out on each weekly episode, remember to subscribe to "Music Is The Drug" at your favourite podcast provider - Apple, Amazon, Audible, Google, Spotify, Deezer, Stitcher, TuneIn, Podchaser and all the rest..."Cowboy Junkies - Music Is The Drug" is hosted by Dave Bowler, author of the authorised biography of the band. In celebration of the little festival that could, and was: Summerfolk 46. Since it was impossible to catch all the acts, at all the venues, here's a handy sampler of a few of the great sounds the Georgian Bay Folk Society brought to Owen Sound this year. Travel by ear around the world with Jaffa Road, Moskitto Bar, Okan and Quique Escamilla. Revel in the shimmering guitars of Tony McManus & Julia Toaspern, the heavy riffs of Terra Lightfoot and the deep groove of Ray Bonneville. Rock out with The Skydiggers, get down with the bluegrass of the Slocan Ramblers, surround yourself in the voices of Crystal Shawanda and Evangeline Gentle. And from Kurt Swinghammer, a real special cut called 'Owen Sound'. These artists performed all over the scenic city for one weekend, and for one hour only they're all together on this episode of Georgian Bay Roots!

Tell the Band to Go Home/Steel Belted Radio Podcasts

Episode #894 Friday, June 18, 2021 marked five years since we lost our friend and namesake artist, Paul MacLeod. This show started as an avenue for talented artists like Paul to get some of the exposure that they so deserve. Paul was a friend and an inspiration and like a lot of people, I miss him and wish he could still be here. I put together a tribute to Paul for my other show, Fly with your Shadow, which I hope you'll check out at flywithyourshadow.com or on the streaming service of your choice. Although that one was the longest episode of the show ever, I had much more left over, and it only seemed fitting that the tribute would spill over onto the show that he gave a name to. Today we'll hear from Andy Maize of Paul's former band Skydiggers, Jason Schneider, Mark Logan of Busted Flat Records, and Lynn Jackson. They'll tell you which of Paul's songs they loved the most and which of the hundreds of cover versions that he could perform were their favourites. I've been super busy with that, so not much time to look up new music or even get through my Record Store Day purchases, so not much on the new side here, but I did find a few. The big news of the week is the imminent return of live music in Winnipeg, as The Times Change(d) High & Lonesome Club announced their outdoor summer concert series at Blue Note Park! That lineup of locals is stellar and well worth looking forward to, so I fit in as many highlights as I could today. I hope to see you there! playlist: https://wp.me/p1lizT-eq6

Paul MacLeod was a super talented singer/songwriter from Kitchener, Ontario. He built his reputation locally and regionally as a captivating solo performer who mixed great original songs alongside a vast and diverse repertoire of covers. He was first introduced to many of us nationally and internationally when he joined legendary, long-standing roots-rock band Skydiggers in the mid-90s. He had the difficult task of replacing founding and high-profile and much-loved member Peter Cash in the band, but he did so admirably, more than holding his own alongside the accomplished band. He brought a new edge, his acclaimed skill on the guitar, and powerful vocals. He would often open for the band, then join them for the headlining set. In addition to two Skydiggers studio albums and one live release, Paul released a great rock album with a band called Hibakusha, and four albums of his own. I took the name of his first CD for my campus and community radio show, Tell the Band to Go Home, which debuted in September, 2002. Paul was a guest on the show, and I got to know him a bit at shows and occasional correspondence. His music, wit, and energy inspired and amazed me. His albums are among my very favourites. Five years ago today, June 18, 2016, Paul took his own life. I was devastated. His music has been a mainstay on my radio show for almost 19 years. Along with John Bottomley, who I talked a lot about in episode 2 and episode 3 of this show, Paul's struggles and death contributed to my desire to further conversations about mental illness, and motivated me to create this show. I wanted to talk to some of his closest friends and get them to tell stories and remember Paul for the brilliant, creative, hilarious individual that he was. I wanted it to be honest and paint the full picture of what it was like to know Paul. It was a treat to speak to others who loved him and who miss him like I do. You'll hear more memories from my guests, and their favourite Paul MacLeod songs, and some of the songs that he covered, on the June 20 episode of Tell the Band to Go Home. Guests: Lynn Jackson - Kitchener singer/songwriter and close friend of Paul's. Find out more about her and find her music at https://lynnjackson.net/ Mark Logan - owner of Encore Records in Kitchener and of Busted Flat Records, the label that released Paul's last two albums, Bright Eyes Fade and Gauge. Mark was instrumental in Paul's career, as well as the careers of Shannon Lyon, Brock Zeman, Matt Andersen, and many more. He's an unsung hero of the Canadian music industry. Jason Schneider - these days, an in-demand publicist through his busy public relations agency, Jason Schneider Media, but a longtime music journalist and an accomplished author and musician. He was one of three musicians responsible for one of my favourite books of all time, and one that I refer to often, Have Not Been The Same: The CanRock Renaissance 1985-1995.  Andy Maize - founding member and lead singer of Skydiggers, one of the most popular, accomplished, and longest-lasting bands in Canada. Their friends, colleagues, and contemporaries include Blue Rodeo, The Tragically Hip, and episode 16 guest Suzie Ungerleider.    music credits and more info: https://flywithyourshadow.com/tribute-to-paul-macleod-w-andy-maize-skydiggers-jason-schneider-mark-logan-and-lynn-jackson-episode-17
