The band took their bow. The house lights came up, and nobody in the Saddledome moved. This is the night the ovation would not stop.Episode summaryAugust 3rd, 2016. A Wednesday. Two nights after the first Calgary show, The Tragically Hip walked back into the Scotiabank Saddledome and played the city goodbye. Ten years on, three fans who were in the building pass the night around the table with jD.Spencer from Calgary is back from the night one episode. This was his third show of the Man Machine Poem Tour and the last time he saw the band live, and he spent it with Alan and Chantel, old friends from ten years of Hitmen games and Saddledome nights. His friend Al's text said it best: heavy but celebratory, like we all knew what was happening but we chose to live in the moment.Julie from Calgary hadn't seen The Hip since 1997. The tickets were a first date anniversary present. She and Keith from Calgary went with her parents, still dating, married the next year, and 'Ahead by a Century' was the wedding song.They talk about the word glioblastoma and where it landed in Julie's family. About Spencer's Periscope vigil in a Calgary bar the night the tour opened in Victoria. He's joined by two Edmontonians who were in the building — Kirsten and Chris — for a conversation about scalped tickets and Ticketmaster nightmares, the last concert ever held in Rexall Place, a set list that dug deeper than anyone expected, and the two encores that sent a city home in pieces.It's a night of firsts and lasts: 'Scared' heard live for the first time and the last time in the same breath, a room full of strangers crying through 'Courage,' and a final 'Bobcaygeon' with the whole barn lit up. Chris went down anyway, watched people offer $200 for a $20 ticket, walked back toward the LRT station, and got face value from the fifteenth person he asked.The beer jug legend — paying a bouncer $20 to work the beer gardens, selling jugs at a markup, and Gord reaching down, taking a swig from Chris's jug, and hurling it into the crowd.The Fully Completely tour show he almost missed: hungover off a flight home from Mexico, picked up at the airport by his dad, who happened to have tickets. They caught it from about song four.For the final tour, a coworker — Kathy Thompson, ticket savant — tipped him off about the presale three days early. He landed what he calls the worst seats of his life and has never been happier about bad seats.Who They Went WithKirsten took her friend Natasha to night two, up in section 201; she had been on the floor for night one with her now-wife, who had never seen the Hip before.Seeing the tour from two different vantage points meant two different shows — and from the upper level she could suddenly see the teleprompters on stage.Chris invited both of the buddies from that very first show — one in Victoria, one living in France — and both had to bow out. His brother got the ticket, and the two of them have a lot of Hip history together.The Set ListOpens with "Blow at High Dough."Chris on the run of Courage / At the Hundredth Meridian / Wheat Kings / Fifty Mission Cap — four of his all-time favourites back to back. He told his brother he could have walked out happy right there.The deep-album slot that night: We Are the Same. Kirsten singles out "Now the Struggle Has a Name" — she still remembers the notes Gord hit — and talks about the mood of "Coffee Girl" and "Morning Moon."Chris is candid that the later records don't sit with him the way the early ones do, and names "An Inch an Hour" as the one that got away.Both were set-list watching night to night, trying to guess which album would get pulled next — and Kirsten notes what it meant for Gord to rotate the set at all, given how well known his struggles with lyrics were (see: "Cordelia" quietly disappearing from set lists for years).The EncoresEncore 1: Greasy Jungle → Scared → Grace, TooEncore 2: Fireworks → BobcaygeonKirsten on closing with "Bobcaygeon" instead of the usual barn-burner — phones and lighters up across the building, and Gord taking long moments to look out and take it in.Chris connects the "checkerboard floors" line to the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto, and reads the closer as the band pointing back at where they started. He still goes to the Horseshoe every time he's in Toronto.Gord on StageThe eye contact — a recurring observation across this series. Kirsten notes Gord historically avoided looking at people because singing faces threw him off, and that on this tour the fourth wall came down.Her impression of him off stage from a brief meeting: quiet, soft-spoken, very funny, extremely thoughtful.Chris was struck by how minimalist the production was — no big screens, just five guys, a silver suit, the feather hat and the Jaws shirt.The honest part: Gord was visibly struggling in places, missing notes, with the band filling the gaps — and getting noticeably stronger night over night. Kirsten describes a collective will from the crowd pushing him through.The Last Night in the BarnThis was the final concert at Rexall Place / Northlands Coliseum before the move to Rogers Place — so the night carried a second goodbye.Chris and his brother started at the Vinyl Needle downtown (dinner, beers, and a Hip tribute band playing to a very envious crowd), then rode the LRT through pouring rain.Walking into a building he had been going to since 1980 and finding it stripped and sterile — memorabilia pulled down, replaced with deep-cut oddities like an old Edmonton Drillers photo.Kirsten on saying goodbye to a venue where she had seen Oilers playoffs, countless bands, and the Hip many times over.When It Hit"Courage." Chris looked left, looked right, looked down, looked at his brother — everyone was crying. First time he had ever cried at a concert.Kirsten describes it coming in waves, every night, over and over: this is it, this is the final tour.Chris screaming himself hoarse for one more encore — and getting it.Walking out: heavy, but joyful. The same line over and over on the way to the train — "I can't believe I was here."August 20: The CBC National BroadcastKirsten missed it live — Edmonton Fringe obligations with her wife — caught what she could on CBC Radio in the car, then watched her recording that night and lost it.Her take on Gord's address to Trudeau and the reconciliation focus of his final chapter, and on the optimism she thinks the country still needs.Chris hosted a house party for 15 or so, most of them less invested than he was, and had to explain to a room of nieces and nephews why Uncle Chris was crying on the couch.Both reflect on the outdoor watch parties across the country — and Chris floats the idea of doing one for the 10th anniversary.What They'd Tell Someone Who Wasn't ThereChris on the Hip as Canadiana nobody else has matched — the loon call in "Wheat Kings," getting away with naming an album Road Apples, the reflexive "Jacques Cartier, right this way" he and his buddy blurted out at a statue in France — and on being unabashedly proud to be Canadian.Kirsten remembers a spotlit banner behind the stage reading "Canada Loves the Hip," and lands on the privilege of witnessing it: great musicianship, great ambassadors, good people making good art.Notable Quotes“He didn't just sing it. Established 42 years ago at Vancouver's famed Smilin' Buddha Cabaret, 54-40 have penned countless iconic, enduring, chart-topping gems, rightfully catapulting them to worship-worthy status among millions at home and around the globe. “When I started playing, I was an angry young man with a big mission,” chuckles Neil Osborne of their New Year's Eve start in 1980. “I used to say, ‘If I'm still doing this when I'm 30, I'm going to shoot myself.' And then I said, ‘If I'm still doing this when I am 40, someone please shoot me.' “Now it's like, ‘If I am still doing this at age 50 and over... Wow, eh?!'” The group's longevity is a testament to the potent mix of talent and tenacity. Keep On Walking is 54-40's most eclectic, propulsive, and flat-out excellent album in a career already teeming with them. “This record already feels like a success to me,” says Osborne. “The fact that we created it while really enjoying playing together is an accomplishment, and why Brad Merritt and I started the band in the first place.”

Synopsis On today's date in 1843, Richard Wagner's opera “The Flying Dutchman” had its premiere performance in Dresden. The opera's sea-swept overture was supposedly inspired by a stormy voyage Wagner and his wife Minna took from Riga to Paris, their journey interrupted by an emergency stop in a Norwegian fjord due to rough weather, as well as a longer layover in London. As usual, Wagner was fleeing creditors, and made the cramped voyage – as usual – in extravagant style, namely in the company of a huge Newfoundland dog he named Robber. Imagine, if you will, being cheek-by-jowl with a wet, sea-sick Newfie. That North Sea crossing must have seemed as interminable as the Flying Dutchman's eternal wanderings! Negotiating London also proved a challenge, as Wagner recounted in his memoirs: “The dog whisked round every corner and dragged us every which way. So the three of us sought refuge in a cab, which took us to the Horseshoe Tavern, a sailor's pub recommended to us by our captain... Shay From the Band Est. 2018 Artist Bio In July of 2018, Lionel Doe set out to record what was to be a simple, acoustic, singersongwriter EP. The project was to be gritty and beautiful, and thus called “So Dirty the Flamingos”. At the same time, Lionel's bandmate, bassist Adam Drury embarked on transforming the basement of his family home into a fully functioning recording studio and rehearsal space. They then enlisted Devin Jannetta, a workhorse drummer, and Scott Dunn, a Hammond organist with a long history of musical collaborations all over Toronto. And finally, Ciara Logar was asked to join as the backing vocalist to add to what was to be a signature sound. So Dirty the Flamingos was born, and at the same time, Sodipop Studio was record and rehearsal space ready. As the songs went to tape, Doe was inspired by the largesse of the sound that was being captured. The arrangements changed and grew, other musicians were brought in, and in the end, the self-titled So Dirty the Flamingos debut EP was a full-fledged Americana sonic boon, complete with pedal steel guitar (Steve Crosgrey), cello, (Mark Wang), a children's choir, and cowboy gang vocals. It was at this time it was decided to release on vinyl format, as the material lent itself to it. ‘So Dirty the Flamingos' was released officially on June 14th, 2019 at The Big Guy's Little Coffee Shop, where the band's formative business meetings were held. From there, they continue to play live shows throughout Toronto, in iconic places such as Junction City Music Hall, and the Horseshoe Tavern to smaller coffee and record shops. This indie roots rock quintet is cranking out songs straight from the heart and they are continuing to flourish. Their debut single, “Daughters” made it to the top 100 in the 2019 CBC Spotlight competition and was quickly followed by their second EP release single, “Before the Misfits” which heated up local radio with its selection as a featured artist pick. Their second EP, Unamerican Girl was released at the height on the pandemic in May 2020. As is their nature, So Dirty the Flamingos pushed through the uncertainty with grit and determination and are currently working on a third EP. If you live in Toronto and frequented music venues like The Horseshoe Tavern, or even just have the local radio station playing in the background at home or your place of work, then you've undoubtedly heard the catchy melodies of the pop-rock quartet: Jane's Party. If you haven't had a chance to see them live, I highly recommend it: they put on a great show and will soon be performing on the stage again. The band is made up of Jeff Giles (keys/guitar/vocals), Tom Ionescu (guitar/vocals), Devon Richardson (bass/vocals), and Zach Sutton (drums). These guys have been hard at work making wonderfully catchy tunes that get stuck in your head since forming the band in 2006. In their 15 year career, they have put out 5 full-length albums, the latest of which is a collection of unplugged versions of songs they performed on The Marshmallow Revue. "What is the Marshmallow Revue?", you might ask. Without giving too much away, because we talk bout it quite a bit in the interview, it is a very well produced film of the guys performing out on docks or in canoes out in cottage country – north of Toronto. The film really gives fans a deeper insight and personal connection to the band, and is all around just a great watch – you can catch it on YouTube. I know about the great Chan Marshall because of the great, the greatest, Patti Schmidt. I don't know how to spell her name and I am not going to check. But Patti Schmitt(?) was once the host of the show that made Canadian indie music the best indie music in the world: the show was broadcast on CBC radio 2 during the 90s. It was called Brave New Waves. Hey ... It's Brave New Waves An unsung genius of Canadian broadcasting. How many great Canadian bands will read this and not realize the slight they have done Patti Smitt (lol) by not demanding that she receive, at the very least I'm not checking how to spell her name. I love her. I met her once at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto and this was after listening to her show all five days a week after lockdown. The best fuckin' show. Anyhoo, when I met her at the Horseshoe Tavern, I didn't quite believe it was her. It just seemed too good to be true. She insisted she was she. To make her prove it - GET THIS! - I made her say the show's intro into my ear. "Hey ... It's Brave New Waves" If you have never heard the show Brave New Waves I won't bother explaining the matchless brilliance of this. I didn't mention the above story in the podcast, by the way. Sammy Kohn is the drummer for Canada's the Watchmen. He will contend that he is a realtor in the Greater Toronto Area, but so long as the Watchmen keep getting played on the radio and the band continues playing a few shows a year, he will be known first as the drummer of the Watchmen. Formed in Winnipeg in the late 80's, the band wrote, recorded, and released their first CD in 1992 called "McLaren Furnace Room", which was followed with a subsequent major label release two years later "In the Trees" and a decades worth of touring, writing, recording and working hard. That includes those early morning radio station appearances, often after finishing a show earlier that morning.In this episode, Sammy and I spoke about residing at opposite ends of the radio and records promotion wheel that was responsible for one of the most lucrative eras for Canadian Rock music. We covered some of the most 90's of things, (HMV, CD's) and Canadian pillars of the music industry like MuchMusic and the of Cancon regs which helped the band grow. I also come clean about not adding one of their most popular songs at the station I was at.This episode was recorded two weeks before the death of Deane Cameron, who had a large role in the band making a transition from Universal to EMI. Author of the new book The Legendary Horseshoe Tavern: A Complete History David McPherson joins me for a chat in Episode 49 of No Sleep 'til Sudbury. The book is an excellent testament to one of Canada's greatest all-time live music institutions, The Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto. We discuss the 70th anniversary of the 'Shoe and some of the really great shows that have taken place there, and why live music is still so important today. One Bad Son were in Toronto playing the legendary Horseshoe Tavern during Canadian Music Week. I set up shop in the front area by the window and chatted with Kurt & Adam from the band about their new single 'Raging Bull' which just hit #2 on the Canadian Rock chart today (April 24). We also had a visit from 'Crazy Marie' or 'Crazy Murray' we're not sure but she definitely smokes meth and wanted to get in on the podcast. Hicks is apparently packing a python and Kurt talks about his side-gig as an entertainment lawyer. They play The Merchant Tap House, Kingston on Thursday (April 27th).
