Nick Danziger is an award-winning photographer. He is also a filmmaker and travel writer. His adventures abroad began at a very young age.Nick was 13 and living in Switzerland when he told his parents that he was going to travel to Paris. Nick's parents did not take their son particularly seriously but little did they know that he had a plan in mind. He had packed some basic food provisions and the little bit of money he had access to. He also took a sketch pad, which would turn out to be the item that would earn him money on his travels. After sneaking onto and off the train, Nick did in fact arrive in Paris. But while a world of potential adventure opened up to him, so did a world of potential danger. How would a young Nick navigate this danger? And what would he learn on his travels that would influence him throughout his life?Alex Melia, and the Stories of Men team are on a mission to uncover what it means to live an independent and meaningful life. We'll be sharing this knowledge with you every week. We'd like to extend our appreciation to today's guest, Nick. His reflective and profound observations on travel and the privileges he has experienced as a white, western male are illuminating and wise. They also provide a vital part of the puzzle as we try to piece together what it means to be a man in today's world.*********************Check out the Stories Of Men website for more on this storyWe're also on Facebook, Twitter and InstagramA Fascinate Production [Original air date: May 30th, 2023]Mentioned in this episode:Take The Man Test here: https://bit.ly/the_man_test

We catch up with top documentary photographer Nick Danziger (www.nickdanziger.com) to take a look into his world of visual storytelling. Nick is a previous ‘World Press Photo’ 1st prize winner for his image of Tony Blair and George Bush just as the second Iraq war began. His travel books sold around the world in the 1980’s and 90’s and his subsequent photography has featured in major global publications. He has travelled extensively in war-zones and covered harrowing and touching personal stories of those affected by fighting, hunger, repression and much more. Although our primary focus is normally on landscape and travel photography, there are plenty of crossover points that are relevant. The ability to use images to tell compelling stories is something that any genre of photography must strive for. We talk with Nick about what drives his passion for storytelling and some of the situations he’s been privileged to witness and document, and what challenges lie ahead for us all globally. Many thanks to Nick for coming on the show, and to WEX Photo Video & Fotospeed for supporting the show. We'll be back in two weeks with Landscape Photographer Alex Hare. The summer fighting season has begun in Afghanistan and, as Justin Rowlatt discovers, there is already a shortage of coffins following a Taliban attack. As the world worries about North Korea, Nick Danziger gets a glimpse of life in Pyongyang; designer coats, European football shirts and courting couples furiously tapping away on locally-manufactured mobile phones were not what he was expecting. In Uzbekistan, it’s the crunch of crinoline and sound of snapping cameras that surprise Caroline Eden – because now is wedding season in the former Soviet state. In the UAE, Julia Wheeler discovers a road named ‘Happiness Street’, a Minister of State for Happiness and fines for those who aren’t quite happy enough. And Mark Stratton goes to Sao Tome and Principe to see how a new approach to the cocoa trade is replacing the bitter legacy of the slave trade.

Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the photo journalist Nick Danziger. Nick was born in London but grew up in Monaco and Switzerland. He developed a taste for adventure and travel from a young age, and, inspired by the comic-strip Belgian reporter Tintin, took off on his first trip to Paris aged 13. Without passport or air ticket, he managed to enter the country and travel around, selling sketches to make money. Nick's initial ambition was to be an artist, and he attended art school, got an MA and representation in a gallery. But his desire for travel remained - he applied and was awarded a Winston Churchill Memorial Fellowship in 1982 and used it to follow ancient trade routes - he travelled on foot or traditional local transport from Turkey to China and documented his adventures in diaries. The diaries formed his first book, the best-selling Danziger's Travels, and he never looked back. He has since travelled around the world taking photographs and in 1991 made his first documentary in Afghanistan, War Lives and Videotape, based on children abandoned in the Marastoon mental asylum in Kabul. It was shown as part of the BBC's video diaries series and won the Prix Italia for best television documentary series. Nick has since travelled the world taking photographs and making documentaries about the people he has met. He has published four books, including his latest, The British, for which he returned to his roots.
