We are celebrating this Mother's Day by channeling Divine Mama energy with Empress Karen M. Rose! Trained in Eastern and Western Herbal Medicine, Karen M. Rose created an outlet for her teachings and healing modalities with the opening of Brooklyn-based Sacred Vibes Healing and Sacred Vibes Apothecary in 2002.  Her inspiration for this work began as a child in her native home of Guyana, where she was exposed to how African, Caribbean and Latin American traditions profoundly influenced plant medicine and community healing. The legacy of these lands is the foundation of Karen's spiritual and healing practice. In this conversation, we cover her book The Art & Practice of Spiritual Herbalism, Karen's history growing up in relationship with plants where there was no separation of Spirit, and how she weaves that into her work today.  We talk about Mal de Ojo, or the evil eye, and the importance of energetic and spiritual protection for babies, as well as related physical symptoms, such as colic.  Karen shares some of the biggest challenges that she sees in her community and mothers, and why it's critical to weave in medicine as part of your daily life. She talks about how incorporating the rituals of food and medicine into daily practice with children can be a form of self-care and self mothering. We also touch on the topic of Orishas - what they are, their importance in nature and medicine, and the Orishas connected to Mother such as Yemaya.  Karen weaves in ways to tend to our mother wounds and learn to nurture and Self-mother our selves, including her favorite plant allies to support Mothers. We touch on racial disparity in maternal health outcomes, the resilience and strength of black women and populations, and how to tap into these generational gifts for healing. Karen shares how she works with her own ancestors and plants to connect with her generational resilience and gifts, and so much more.  In the intro, I reference my upcoming group mentorship for healers and helpers who are ready to step out of the spiritual closet, expand their intuitive gifts, and go from conventional practitioner to New Earth Intuitive Healer. Have you ever listened to someone speak and it was like listening to poetry in motion? That is Julie Tenner, the pleasure nutritionist. She is an enchanting goddess who fervently believes that feminine energy is the source of life… that it’s rejuvenation + replenishment. The holy grail. Courageously willing to look beyond her story of managing life as a modern woman with success + family meant a pivotal point of transformation emerged. She absorbed all her wounds of resentment + exhaustion to bubble up her sacred feminine nature into the greatest gift. This is a woman who understands more than most that self-care is probably on your to-do list along with the milk + groceries and as such her guidebook for life is to live by what blooms you open; that the divine speaks to us through feeling. She believes that by co-creating with the universe in this way we can complete our embodiment of feminine life force. She shares with us that by embracing the beam of light that is creative, static energy + using sensuality as a pathway of discovery you can expand your capacity for love. To love. 'A supernova of feeling' she calls it. From Disney princesses to the art of adornment, we cover all the ways to amplify the light that is uniquely you and access more freedom + intimacy. Sleep is one of the most loaded and controversial topics you can discuss within motherhood. There is judgement regardless of whether you sleep train or not, and I firmly believe all mothers are doing the best with the information and support they have available to them at the time. I know that not getting quality sleep can have severe impacts on our health and quality of life, but I want to shift the conversation away from the ‘either/or' paradigm about putting baby or Mum ‘first'. We need another way. This episode is part 1 in a two part series, and this part shares the sleep journey I've been on with my daughter. I speak the unspoken parts of sleep training and critique sleep training industry and culture for an exploitation of tired and vulnerable parents, approaching this from a place of compassion and empathy for mothers. We navigated through 18 months of frequent and distressed waking before finding answers that helped my daughter's sleep. But this journey taught me surprising (and sometimes challenging) lessons about myself as a mother and woman, and has instilled in me a passion for education about biologically normal patterns of baby and toddler sleep. I think we need an overhaul of our current social and cultural model when it comes to the topic of motherhood and sleep! Stay tuned for part 2 where I dig into the research and the core of my argument, taking you through 7 myths of infant sleep that I believe need calling out and changing.
